Jet BD-7 Benchtop Lathe Manufacturer Details
the Jet BD-7 benchtop lathe is JPW Tools AG Switzerland. Website address: www.jettools.com
Behind the JET is a company with extensive experience in the production of wood and metalworking machines. Since 1950, JET has been developing, producing and selling machines in the USA, where it is the market leader.
An important event in the life of the company was the merger with the large industrial concern Walter Meier AG (Switzerland), which took place in 1988. For Jet, this was a step towards Europe; for Walter Meyer, it was the first experience in the machine tool industry outside of its native Switzerland, where the company had been involved in this area since 1937. Over time, the following brands were also acquired: Powermatic (USA), a manufacturer of high-quality woodworking machines, and Wilton (USA), under which vices and hand tools are presented.
Several years ago, JET was purchased by the Swiss company WMH Tool Group AG, which in turn is a subsidiary of the joint-stock company Walter Meier Holding AG , located in Zurich. This industrial group, which has more than 1,800 employees, has a turnover of US$560 million (2003). In addition to JET, WMH Group produces and sells such tool brands as WILTON, POWERMATIC, Columbian, Performax, known mainly in the US market. The turnover of these brands alone in the United States amounted to $230 million in 2003.

Safety precautions
This machine must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides the path of least resistance for electrical current and reduces the risk of electric shock. The machine is equipped with an electrical cord with a grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be inserted into a suitable outlet that is installed and grounded in accordance with local codes and regulations. Improper connection of the grounding conductor may result in a risk of electric shock. If in doubt, have a qualified electrician or technician check that the outlet is properly grounded. Do not change the plug supplied with the machine. The green/yellow conductor is the grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the conductor to live terminals. BD-7VS Lathe Operating Instructions 10 Use only 3-wire extension cords with grounded plugs. Repair a damaged or broken cable immediately. The use of extension cords is not recommended; Try to locate the machine near a power source. If an extension cord is needed, make sure it is in good condition. Using an extension cord that is too long will cause low circuit voltage, loss of power, and overheating. Use only extension cords marked H07RN-F, with wires ? 1.5mm2 or more. The total cable length must not exceed 18 meters. Network cables and plugs must not be damaged.

Description of the design of the Jet BD-7 lathe
Machine headstock
The motor transmits rotation to the spindle using a toothed belt. The spindle speed can be smoothly varied and is adjusted using the handle (23) located on the main control panel.
The spindle has a #3 Morse taper hole to allow the center to be used with a faceplate or rotary clamp.
A self-centering chuck (4) with three jaws is installed on the spindle (2). To remove the chuck, simply remove the three mounting nuts from the back of the spindle boss so that it can be pulled out freely along with the three locating pins.
For more efficient use of the chuck, three external jaws are supplied. For instructions on the use and installation of external cams, see the "Accessories" section.
There are 6 holes on the spindle flange for more convenient fixing of the faceplate. 4-jaw chuck (see Accessories).
Transmission
The gearbox is protected by a casing (22), which can be removed by unscrewing two hexagonal mounting screws.
The gear mechanism shown in Fig. 2, transmits rotation to the feed screw. The feed screw works like a worm, and during operation, the auto-feed handle (15), which is attached with a nut to the feed screw, transmits rotation to the caliper and then to the cutting tool. Thus, the feed is transmitted for thread cutting and turning. The feed screw speed and cutting tool speed are determined by the gearbox configuration. You can read about this in detail in the “Thread cutting” section.
You can stop the rotation of the feed screw using the handle (27). This handle is used to rotate the feed screw forward or backward (also described in the Threading section).
Tailstock of the machine
The cast part of the tailstock (9) can move along the frame and be installed in any desired position; its position is fixed with a nut (10). The tailstock quill has an internal Morse 2 taper for mounting the supplied center. You can also purchase a spinning center and drill chuck. (See Accessories).
Guides
On the guides there is a transverse support (6), on which an upper support (7) with a tool holder is installed, allowing complex and delicate operations to be performed. It can be moved by the lead screw through the drive nut to achieve automatic feeding when the automatic feeding lever (15) mounted on the housing (17) is operated.
The position of the tool can be adjusted by rotating the cross slide feed handle (16), which moves it across the machine and slide, or by rotating the manual feed handle (18), which moves the tool along the machine. To move the tool short distances at right angles to the cross slide, use the longitudinal slide feed handle (13). This operation is described in the Miter Cutting section.
The transverse and longitudinal calipers are equipped with a scale. The scale is used to move the tool to precise distances, one division is equal to 0.025 mm. The scale rotates with the feed handle. The scale on the feed of the transverse support can be rotated relative to the handle for ease of reading and fixed. The scale can be reset. This is described in more detail in the “Operation” section.
To fix the position of the tool in the tool holder, 8 hex bolts are used. For quick and easy replacement, 4 cutters can be installed. Two are already installed.
The tool holder rotates when the handle (A), which is located at the top, is loosened; The tool holder can be easily lifted and adjusted to the required position.
Before starting work, ALWAYS check that the tool holder and tool are securely secured by the handle.

I bought this machine 3 years ago. The best machine for your money. There are no complaints about the plastic gears! But there are minor problems, such as a very inconvenient tailstock clamping system; when the machine is turned on, the motor does not always turn on; you have to turn the chuck, only after that it will start. But the main drawback is that the support can be moved by hand simply by pushing it back and forth; when facing, the cutter moves out of the plane.. Perhaps I don’t understand something and I just need to tighten the screw somewhere.
