Tire sawmill: learning how to set up a sawmill with an electric and gasoline engine for longitudinal sawing of logs

To produce lumber, man created sawmills. One common type is the tire sawmill. In this sawmill, the working element is a chain bar with a chain attached to it. Considering that the manufacture of such a frame does not require milled or other difficult-to-manufacture parts, you can make it yourself.

What is a tire sawmill used for?

The main purpose of a chain sawmill tire is to quickly and correctly saw a log to obtain lumber. Why is the design called that? The fact is that to create such a mechanism, a saw bar is used.

The cutting part is designed in the form of a chain bar with a sharp chain. The main advantage of this design is its simple design and the ability to use it in various fields.

Most craftsmen prefer to use a regular chainsaw as the cutting part.

The principle of operation is to pre-harvest logs of the required size, and then, when installing the saw in the frame, it is possible to cut the elements into blanks of different lengths and widths. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve high cutting accuracy.

Stationary sawmill

There is an option to locate the sawmill on a concrete site. Thus, constant horizontality will be ensured, but moving one of the elements becomes more difficult, since deviations to the side are possible under load. This will not ruin the sawing, but it will slow it down considerably. Metal U-shaped profiles, “recessed” into the concrete when pouring the site, will help to avoid this drawback.

For ease of operation, you can install another intermediate element - a clutch. Then you will have to install a belt drive between the drive gear and the electric motor. The gear and motor shaft are provided with pulleys on which V-belts are put on. The belts themselves must be pressed with a special roller. The design can be borrowed from a walk-behind tractor.

Types of tire sawmills

A simple saw bar design can consist of any drive. That is why homemade models are divided into several types depending on the type of engine.

These include the following designs:

  • Gasoline. In this case, a four-stroke engine operating on the principle of internal combustion is used;
  • Electric. In this case, three-phase asynchronous operation of an electric motor with high power is observed.

The use of an electric motor is cost-effective if the equipment will be used as a stationary device. The sawmill will be used outside a closed space. In this case, it is better to choose a package consisting of an asynchronous motor.

  • A sawmill with an electric motor requires high power consumption.
  • Experts recommend choosing models with a power of at least 4 kW. A cable consisting of a large cross-section of wires will provide power.
  • In the process of longitudinal sawing a log, it is important to take into account that such a mechanism is movable.
  • It can deviate from its original position up to 5 m in length.
  • In this case, it is necessary to consider isolating the cutting base from surrounding objects. The working part must be plastic and movable.

If you install a gasoline engine in a tire sawmill, you will not need an electrical cable. The design of a gasoline engine has significant disadvantages.

For example, if an engine running on medium-power gasoline is chosen for the mechanism, then a battery may be required to start it. If a chainsaw drive is used, a powerful cord-based starter will allow the mechanism to be prepared for operation.

PETROL TIRE SAW MACHINE

The BPS is designed for longitudinal sawing of wood of any species of a given thickness. The mini-sawmill can be used to produce veneer, carriage, edged, unedged boards, thin gauges, regular, complex, triangular and multi-faceted profile sections.

Sawmill BPS : Today, when the environmental situation in the world is rapidly changing, when the areas of forest land protected by law are growing every day, which leads to rising prices and instability in the supply of raw materials, the issue of independent production of lumber becomes relevant.

It is known that among the existing methods of wood processing, the method of sawing with a tire is not the most economical and not the most highly productive. But compared to other existing types of sawmilling, this type of sawmill is the most inexpensive and convenient.

This sawmill can easily be placed right at your summer cottage and with a small amount of power you can get the required amount of any lumber. The BPS sawmill is designed for high-quality longitudinal sawing of wood of any species of a given thickness. Can be used to produce veneer, carriages, edged and unedged boards, timber (regular, complex, three-sided and multi-sided sections), sawing thin gauge. The sawmill is powered by an American gasoline engine with a power of 6.0 hp. (on request, this sawmill can be equipped with a more powerful gasoline engine: 7.0 hp, 12.0 hp). This gasoline engine is a 4-stroke engine, so there are no problems such as the use of a gasoline + oil fuel mixture; it runs on regular AI-92 gasoline. It is also very easy to use and has high reliability.

Operation of a chainsaw machine

The sawmill is installed both indoors and in open areas, provided that the electrical equipment is protected from precipitation. In winter, the sawmill cuts with the same quality and ease as in summer - without “waves” and “stubble”. The logs are not centered and do not rise anywhere.

Sawing is done in a horizontal plane by manually moving the carriage. The tire is raised and lowered manually by turning the height adjustment knob. By individually cutting logs, you can obtain a yield of up to 65% of unedged boards. The chain on the bus changes in 1 minute. Breaking a chain link is a rare occurrence; riveting a chain is an extremely simple operation. The chain can withstand about 10 sharpenings; no toothing is required. One chain sharpening is enough for 2 - 3 m3 (if the forest is clean softwood), one tire for 80 - 90 m3, drive sprocket for 80 - 90 m3. Sharpening a chain requires skill or a sharpening machine. Sawmill lubrication - any engine or transmission oil; drip feed into the tire.

All equipment can be delivered throughout Russia and the Republic of Belarus by transport companies “Energia”

How to make a sawmill at home

Before starting the work process, it is important to correctly determine the type of launch and the supply of material. You can follow a technique in which the moving part is the material, or you can do the opposite.

When you have decided on the type of lumber supply, it is important to take into account one more fact that the location of this mechanism should take up enough space so that no additional inconvenience arises during operation.

The correct position of the runners requires special attention. The fact is that a wooden log will move along them.

The surface of the conveyors must be promptly cleaned of sawdust and small branches.

To create a tire sawmill at home, you will need the following components:

  • Mechanism drawing;
  • Metal corner size 50/50. We will use it to create a staging path;
  • Rectangular pipe made of dense metal. The length of the elements must be at least 60/60. We will use it to construct the carriage;
  • Round metal pipe. It is necessary to fix the power part of the unit;
  • Metal sheet 1 sq.m. The thickness of the workpiece must be at least 4 mm;
  • Metal wheels with axles – 4 pieces;
  • Tire, drive sprocket and chain;
  • Electric welding;
  • Electric motor;
  • Drill with a set of drills of different diameters;
  • Bulgarian;
  • Ruler;
  • Building level;
  • Chalk for making notches.

You can determine the length of the corner to create a staging path by following several recommendations.

They include:

  1. Length of the wooden piece + distance from the wheel to the edge of the tire. We multiply the result by 2. Allowances of 10 cm will help to avoid mistakes.
  2. You can determine the size of the pipes for the carriage by taking into account the type of tire. The design should be 30 cm larger than the cutting part.

Types and features of homemade sawmills

Bent channels will be needed to assemble the sawmill.

A do-it-yourself tire sawmill can be made in two versions:

  • with movement of the working unit relative to the tree trunk;
  • with longitudinal wood feed.

There is no point in saying that one of the options is better, since both of them have both advantages and disadvantages. For example, if the working unit is fed along the barrel, then it is easier for the operator to regulate his efforts to ensure uniform progress and sawing at high speed.

Feeding a log is more difficult in this regard: it is enough to feed the log a little more, and the load on the tire and chains will be too high. This may cause the chain to jam or burn out the motor. But such a sawmill does not require a large amount of electrical wiring, as is the case when using a work unit feed. It's up to you to think about what to prefer. But do not forget that the homemade sawmill and the log must be in a strictly horizontal position when sawing.

Make sure that these elements are on a solid basis that eliminates vibrations, “swings” and shocks.

Typically, a do-it-yourself tire sawmill is located either on channels or on rails.

Wheels are installed at the bottom of the sawmill frame to ensure easy movement (of sawmills or logs).

How to assemble a sawing mechanism

It is necessary to weld a square from metal pipes. Externally, such a blank will look like an ordinary box. It should not have external walls, bottom and lid.

The bottom side should be short, and the top side should be about 20 cm longer. As a result, we have the appearance of a carriage. Wheels will be attached to the protruding elements.

After this, we move on to making a platform for the engine location. We make several holes on the metal sheet to fix the electric motor.

After that, we will weld another flat strip to the platform, which will hold the tire from the chainsaw.

  • We will mount the axle on this site. From it we will fix the drive sprocket for the chain.
  • It is necessary to attach the tire in such a way that it is possible to maintain the possibility of adjustments for the tension of the cutting part.
  • If the chain is poorly tensioned, it may become deformed or break during the cutting process.
  • If the cutting part is too tight, it will put additional stress on the sprocket axle.
  • As a result, you can observe severe load on the electric motor and overheating of the circuit.

The final step will be to fix the power cable at one of the edges of the site. To start, simply connect the electrical cord to a power outlet. When the equipment is turned on, the carriage with the tire will begin to move slowly along the metal frame.

Making a sawmill with your own hands

Before starting work on creating a sawmill, you need to decide on the type of feed. You can make it so that the material itself (the log) is movable, or you can make the working part. When choosing a type with material feeding, it is necessary to take into account that the area for placing the mechanism must be twice as large as when feeding a carriage. In addition, it is necessary to provide for high precision in the location of the runners along which the log will move, and their constant cleaning of sawdust.

To make a homemade tire sawmill with carriage feed, the following materials and tools are required.

  1. Construction drawing.
  2. Metal corner measuring 50x50 for the subway (see length in the text below).
  3. Rectangular metal pipe 60x60 for creating a carriage.
  4. A round metal pipe for securing the power unit.
  5. Sheet of metal 1 m2, 3-4 mm thick.
  6. 4 metal wheels with axles.
  7. Spare parts for the saw (bar, chain, drive sprocket).
  8. Electric motor.
  9. Welding machine with electrodes.
  10. Electric drill and drill set.
  11. "Bulgarian".
  12. Marking tool (ruler, chalk or marker).

The length of the angle for the subway is determined according to the following scheme: the length of the future workpiece (log) + the distance from the outer support (wheel) to the edge of the tire, multiplied by 2, + 10 cm of reserve. The dimensions of the tubes are determined by the size of the carriage, which depends on the type of tire used.

Stages of assembling the sawing mechanism

First of all, it is necessary to weld a structure from square pipes that looks like a box that has no walls, bottom or lid. One (bottom) short side of the future carriage should be 10-15 cm longer than the top side in all directions. Wheels are attached to the protruding parts of the pipes.

At the next stage, round pipes are installed on one side, along which the engine platform will move “up and down.” This is necessary to adjust the size of the future lumber.

Then the platform for the engine itself is made: holes for mounting the electric motor are marked on a sheet of iron. Then another plane is welded to the platform, on which the chainsaw tire is directly attached. The axle on which the drive sprocket of the chain is fixed is attached to the same platform. The bar must be fastened in such a way as to maintain the ability to adjust the chain tension. A poorly tensioned chain can break when sawing, and a strongly tensioned one will lead to excessive load on the drive sprocket axle, overheating of the tire, which will lead to its deformation and failure.

The next step involves installing a pulley on the drive sprocket axis and connecting this pulley and the electric motor pulley with a drive belt.

The final step will be to place the power cable on the site and electrically connect the motor to the network.

Since the tire sawmill is equipped with a high-power electric motor, special attention must be paid to protecting the worker from possible electric shock. All connection points must be covered with covers with a seal, the cable must have at least 2 layers of insulation, and be located so as to prevent it from entering the saw operating area.

Installation of the structure on the base

The base of the sawmill, or the subway, is assembled according to the principle of a ladder: two main guides from the corner are laid on any base and connected to each other by transverse connectors. When installing the base, it is necessary to provide for the placement of screws on its crossbars, which will clamp the source material (log). It is clear that without the use of such screws, it will be impossible to secure the log to the base.

The assembled carriage is installed on the base by dry rolling the carriage along its entire length, checking the ease, smoothness and evenness of its movement. The operation of the cable is checked without turning on the engine.

After all checks have been carried out, the sawmill can be put into operation.

Features of working on a self-made tire sawmill

After all the stages of assembling the tire machine, you can start working.

First you need to secure the log to the sawmill, open the tap on the oil barrel and turn on the engine. Lower the frame using the screw and begin moving the device along the rails.

Do-it-yourself drawing of a tire sawmill

The operation of the sawmill is affected by the thickness of the log, its knotiness, species, and the condition of the wood: dry or fresh. A tire sawmill can handle any type of tree, but the work will be better if fresh wood is used.

Coniferous and deciduous trees can be easily sawed:

  • aspen;
  • maple;
  • alder;
  • poplar.

They have soft wood. It is more difficult to work with hard wood species - oak or ash. But the most difficult job is to cut the steamed acacia, because it has very dense and hard wood.

Before starting work, it is recommended to check whether the saw chain is sharpened; the sawing speed depends on this.

The recommended length of the log should be no more than 7 m, and the width should not be more than 40 cm in diameter. The average speed when sawing pine logs 3 m long and 25 cm in diameter is 7 minutes.

If a large construction project is expected, then purchasing or independently manufacturing a tire sawmill will be necessary. This design is an indispensable assistant when processing wood, sawing timber and other work.

The exact angle of 900 does not change because horizontal shelves are mounted on durable racks. The rigidity of the frame saves your time, since you do not need to periodically check the horizontalness of the cut. The frame is capable of supporting logs weighing up to 500 kg.

Mobile and stationary modifications.

Many of our Customers have their own sawmills at a permanent location. You can also assemble your sawmill and install it in a place where there is wood nearby: in the yard, in the forest, or elsewhere. The easiest way to cut logs is with a special professional chainsaw, model Stihl-MS660 (7 hp) and with a thinner bar; in this case, sawing occurs quickly, and the surface of the board is clean and smooth. The average sawing speed is approximately 45 cm per minute, with a cutting width of 15 cm. With the Logosol E8000 electric saw and automatic feed, the speed doubles. But technical data is one thing, and practical work is another. Based on practical experience, we can say that you can cut from 2 to 4 m3 of lumber per shift, especially if you have an assistant working with you.
