Polygonal figures, models, diagrams, developments, a program for creating masks and sculptures from paper, metal and plastic

Polygon painting (aka Low Poly) has become very popular due to its minimal yet three-dimensional appearance. Luckily for us, the technique for achieving this effect in Photoshop is simple (although it does take some time since all the triangles in the final image must be done by hand).

This is a very simple but repetitive process that takes a very long time. But the result is worth it. You can use any image you want.

Necessary kit for assembling, diagramming and developing a polygonal figure

Take care of a good, comfortable table and chair; you need the lighting to fall from behind your left shoulder; use a table lamp. To avoid staining the table with glue, cover it with film or place a sheet of glass with sanded edges to avoid cutting yourself. To learn how to fold basic products, you will need simple tools such as scissors, a stationery knife, PVA glue and a brush for applying it.

Give preference to PVA construction glue - of all varieties, it has the thickest consistency; it does not spoil the paper, making it wet and sticky, like regular glue. Different types are used - from tissue paper to regular cardboard. Beginners are advised to start with watercolor, 200 grams per m2 for large elements and a drawing variety of 140-160 grams - when developing small parts.

Papercraft paper and glue for paper models

The main material for creation is, naturally, ordinary paper, but since it is not very reliable and fragile, we advise you to pay attention to half-cardboard, or ordinary cardboard. Parts made from it are stronger and give the finished creation wear resistance.

Each master has his own secrets, so we want to share the discovery with you.

It is much more convenient to glue the blanks with narrow double-sided tape. It holds things together instantly and your creativity will not tolerate the threat of falling apart.

But also a good binding object for the elements is an adhesive solution. Choose the option that is more convenient.

Paper model

The creation workflow follows several simple steps. Before starting the process, the master decides what kind of figurine he wants to design. In fact, you can make almost any product, but paper modeling often involves the following options:

  • polyhedra with convex and concave angles, geometric shapes
  • replicas of buildings to scale
  • premium car mockups
  • tanks, heavy guns, armored vehicles
  • trains, ships and submarines, airplanes

Modeling paper is the main working material. Particular attention should be paid to its quality! For initial creativity, it is best to use ordinary A4 sheets; they are of good quality and are the whitest compared to other brands. Density – 80 g/m. I advise you to purchase a special one for drawing.

A set of programs for creating and 3D development

Naturally, to get the desired figure, special programs will be useful. I will tell you about the most relevant and simple ones. They can help turn some ideas into beautiful creations and prototypes that can be used in a wide variety of design know-how. These editors are easy to learn; even beginners can master them in a short period of time. The use of software has made it possible to greatly improve the level of computer game cinema, interior design, architectural and sculptural solutions. Choosing the optimal software is often difficult, since it is not easy to find everything in one, so that all the necessary functionality is in one place.

  • 3ds Max
  • Maya
  • Alias
  • Rhino

The set of faces that will make up the shell of the product is a mesh. Manufacturing is simple, since they have clearly defined external and internal areas, and therefore no additional parameters or calculations are required. But this method requires patience and perseverance, because it requires concentration, active brain activity and thousands of mouse clicks. Be careful, even small errors can ruin the process.

Pepakura Designer

Can work with many 3D model formats, such as 3DS, DXF, MQO, LWO. The list can be viewed on the official page of the program, I think it’s not difficult to do.

Please note: the program does not have the ability to create 3D layouts themselves, like those listed above. There is also no editor, but the developers offer us to convert them into 2D formats, after which you can print the diagram on a printer and then create a real miracle.

As a rule, you will not download such a set or scan of a bearded warrior for free. There are many professional prints available, but they can only be purchased for a nominal fee on, for example, Etsy.

Papekura Designer creates and edits 3D blanks. The pattern drawing is expanded, which can then be printed at the desired scale, cut and glued. Of course, this approach involves a fair amount of work, but there is no choice - a cheaper and more accessible method of “materializing virtual objects” has not yet been invented. Pepakura Designer supports various formats of 3D models created in 3Dstudio, Lightwave, AutoCad, etc. The program creates a scan of a 3-dimensional image for subsequent printing on a printer. It will produce a drawing with ready-made places for gluing and cutting.

Pepakura Viewer

A less powerful tool can only view works without being able to change them. In addition to this direct function, you can increase, decrease, twist, rotate, set angles and do other harmless shenanigans. That's all you need for successful gluing.

Polygonal model and basic recommendations

We give preference to geometric figures made from quadrangles. Easier to deform, which will save time without unnecessary manipulations. Use triangles as little as possible. Also, you should not use complex geometric shapes with a large number of edges and corners, this can lead to texture deformation.

We advise you to visualize only the necessary elements; building additional structures is complicated; if these are small parts, they can be done using textures. This technique is designed to create objects with precise shapes and clear contours. Small facets build the whole; they have color and shape. This method is quoted in industrial design.

Using the example of a cat, we see what diagrams and developments of polygonal shapes look like. It could also be a dog, mouse, or other animal. In order for everything to work out, you need a good quality set in pdf. As a rule, free ones have defects, since they were created by beginners; pros already demand a price for their work.

Polygonal figure, their methods and methods of construction

They are created by three main methods, which are used in a combined version and separately. Using primitives—ready-made geometric shapes like a cube or cylinder are taken as the basis. We construct the desired model by extruding subobjects and dividing existing faces. Also by drawing out new faces from the source polygon, when each next one appears from the previous one.

There are three main ways to build visualization.

  • To give the desired shape, the position of the ribs and their sizes change.
  • The vertices are manipulated, moved, deleted, etc.
  • Polygon faces are used for more complex actions. This is making the shapes convex or, conversely, pointed. It is possible to smooth or indent the surface—we work with planes.

Polygonal shapes in the interior and creative design ideas

Almost all possible shapes can be used to decorate a child’s bedroom, office, bedroom, kitchen. The scale of the design depends on your imagination; you should start with small figures to practice and understand what shortcomings will emerge and then proceed to models of human height and above.
