Rotary laser level: application and operating principle

How to use when installing furniture

This device is also used for leveling furniture in a room.
Moreover, this applies not only to hanging furniture - cabinets, shelves, etc., but also to those located on the floor. If you need to hang a cabinet or shelf on the wall, then using a regular water level is extremely inconvenient. By turning on the level and setting the cross projection mode, you can safely hang a shelf or cabinet on the wall in your home. High accuracy and evenness of furniture arrangement plays an important role in interior design. How to use a level to level a sofa, bed, refrigerator or electric stove. Kitchen cabinets also require a straight line arrangement, and an indispensable level will also help in this matter. Of course, you can take a water level, since its error is acceptable, but with an optical device it will be much easier to cope with the task.

The meter is switched to the mode of constructing a horizontal plane, and then the furniture is configured. To do this, there are adjusting screws on the furniture legs, with which you can achieve a straight position.

What is the operating principle of a rotational laser builder?

The price of laser rotary levels is always high, however, this device has a simple operating principle. The operation of the measuring level is based on the construction of a plane due to the glow of a bright LED. The rotary level received this name due to the construction of a 360-degree horizontal plane.

With a rotary device, you can build a horizontal plane over the entire area of the room, which is an immediate advantage. The ability to construct a plane along the entire perimeter of the room is achieved by moving the beam by rotating it. This is achieved through the use of an electric motor, which drives the laser beam. Depending on the place of application, the devices can be street or geodetic and construction. They differ not only in cost, but also in the degree of protection from dust and moisture. While a geodetic level can be used for measurements indoors, measurements cannot be taken outside with a construction tool for interior work. This is due to the following reasons:

  • A low degree of protection will lead to the ingress of dust and moisture leading to rapid failure of the tool.
  • Inability to detect projection due to low beam illumination
  • Low projection range, which does not exceed 20 meters

The rotary device has not only a horizontal plane construction, but also a vertical one in the form of a point. However, this option is not available on all models of laser levels. To construct a vertical plane, the same laser beam is used, only for this purpose the device is installed on the side wall.

This is interesting! The further the level is able to project the plane, the higher the error rates.

Best Inexpensive Laser Levels

The main advantage of inexpensive lasers is the price. But, as a rule, cheap products suffer from quality or have too few functions. However, for little money you can find meters from well-known manufacturers that accurately determine the vertical and will last a long time.

Of course, these devices are quite simple: they measure in only two planes, but they are equipped with an automatic leveler and have low measurement error. These levels are perfect for home use.

ADA instruments CUBE MINI Basic Edition

The CUBE MINI Basic laser from the American brand ADA instruments is an inexpensive small level “for home”.

On the surface, the device projects a so-called laser cross - two intersecting lines (horizontal and vertical). The measurement range depends on the room illumination and reaches up to 20 meters. The automatic compensator-leveler is designed like a mechanical pendulum. If the tilt angle of the level exceeds 3 degrees, the laser warns about this by flashing. For ease of operation, the device can be mounted on a tripod. The measurement error is practically absent: it is only 2 millimeters per 10 meters.

The disadvantage of the CUBE MINI Basic Edition is its poor aperture: the lines are too short, and in order to obtain a convenient length of the luminous strip for marking, the device must be installed at a great distance from the wall.

The laser is distinguished by its small size: its weight is only 200 grams, and it easily fits in the palm of your hand. Such parameters of the model make it easy to use the level in everyday life: for example, to hang a picture or cornice evenly, or to make repairs yourself. This device is not very suitable for professional use.

BOSCH GLL 2 Professional

The BOSCH GLL 2 Professional laser level belongs to the professional line of Bosch tools, as evidenced by both its name and the blue color of the case.

This is one of the simplest Bosch levels with two crossed laser beams. Its range is small - only 10 meters, so you can only work with it in relatively small rooms. The error in determining the horizon is minimal and is approximately 3 millimeters per 10 meters. The self-leveling range is standard for levels of this type: if the deviation is more than 4 degrees, the projected lines begin to flash slowly, signaling an error. The laser is reliably protected from water and dust, and the rubberized body allows you not to be afraid of the device falling.

You can work without a break with such a tool for quite a long time – up to 15 hours. There is an auto-shut-off function: it works if the level is not touched for half an hour.

Ideal for home use or professional apartment renovation, but it is useless to try to use it in large rooms or outdoors.

INSTRUMAX ELEMENT 2D SET

The INSTRUMAX ELEMENT 2D SET laser level has many advantages. This is the only one of the meters under consideration that can be used outdoors or in very large rooms. The device can be turned on in a special mode for working with the receiver: this will increase its operating range to 50 meters. In normal mode, the range depends on the lighting and does not exceed 10 meters. The measurement accuracy is 2 millimeters at 10 meters.

A special feature of this model is the ability to disable self-leveling - blocking the mechanical pendulum, which is responsible for checking the deviation from the horizon. This function is necessary when alignment relative to some objects is required.

ELEMENT 2D SET is designed in such a way that you can work with it in limited space: even when you are closest to the wall, the vertical beam will pass from floor to ceiling. This feature is very convenient when displaying beacons in the bathroom.

The laser comes with a tripod. The device body is sealed on all sides with rubber seals: this will protect the device if it falls.

Perhaps, of all the inexpensive laser levels, this device is the most functional.

What is a laser level

When arranging the floor, leveling the walls and installing partitions, you need to carefully ensure that the surfaces are completely flat and located at a certain angle in relation to each other. Standard mechanical marking methods take a lot of time. You have to repeatedly pull the cords, constantly monitor their position and adjust if necessary.

You can use the level without assistants, which greatly simplifies repair work.

A laser level is a construction device designed for quickly marking horizontal and vertical planes. It is enough to turn on the level so that it instantly builds a system of points and lines on surfaces in the room. Depending on the model, a laser level can emit one beam or several at once, marking space in a given direction or over the entire area.

Operating principle

The design feature of the self-leveling level is the presence of a special pendulum in its body. When the device is turned on, it changes its position under its own weight so that all the LEDs are in the desired position. This design also allows the device to simultaneously fire multiple beams in different directions. This allows you to significantly reduce its error.

To achieve the best result, you need to know how to use a self-leveling level. To start taking measurements, you need to place a level on a special tripod or a simple horizontal surface. After this, you need to turn it on and wait about half a minute until the pendulum rises to the required position. When the device is automatically leveled, you can begin taking measurements. To make accurate measurements, it is better to choose levels that have a visible laser beam to provide additional control over their operation.

Varieties

Existing support equipment for construction equipment comes in three types: universal geodetic, elevation and photographic tripod.

  • Photo tripods are quite lightweight and are mainly used for mounting laser devices and rangefinders.
  • An elevation tripod will allow a specialist to install and secure heavier optics. They are used to regulate the working height of the laser device and to construct planes. The design of the elevation tripod involves the use of a crank stand with a handle. The crank stand will help you smoothly and accurately adjust the height of the device. It is the presence of a crank stand that distinguishes an elevation tripod from a geodesic one.
  • Geodetic support holders generally have threads for screwing on laser equipment.

Laser level rods are used indoors only. The principle of operation of the equipment is the installation of a telescopic tube on which the laser device is attached. It can move up or down to the required height. The rod is secured with spacers between the ceiling and the floor or other surfaces.

The rod is made of aluminum alloy. It is painted with alternating black and orange stripes. This color allows you to work at dusk. It is easy to assemble and transport. Height adjustment depends on the modification of the equipment, the average height is 3 meters. Rods for levels are also available with higher heights.

Advantages and disadvantages

Devices with a similar design have a number of advantages compared to those that use cylindrical prisms with a short beam length.

  • This is a naturally closed surface that extends along the entire contour of the room, which makes it possible to mark the level in a circular manner at high speed and accuracy, without rotating the device itself.
  • Higher exponentiality. You just need to turn on the device, and the scope of the upcoming work immediately becomes clear.
  • One of the most interesting advantages of these laser levels is that the projected surface can be installed quite close to the wall or ceiling.

Such functions make it possible to carry out many construction and repair tasks much faster and more comfortably. This advantage was especially noted by specialists in suspended ceilings, installation of doors, partitions and plastering work.

Any technical device has its advantages and disadvantages. And this also has its own disadvantages. Not to say that there are many of them, but there are a couple.

  • This is definitely a cost. All laser levels with a 3-360 optical design (in other words, 3 planes of 360° each) are quite expensive. Although now you can buy this device for a very reasonable amount. The only thing is that you will have to wait a little until it is brought from China.
  • The second drawback is that the beam is often more uneven and thick in comparison with levels where cylindrical prisms are installed.

However, this feature is not present in all devices, but only in some, and the reason is unknown, one can only guess. It should be noted that this happens to all manufacturers, regardless of the brand.

Which company's laser level to choose?

Perhaps the manufacturer is one of the main criteria for choosing construction equipment. This is reasonable, because this market also has its leaders offering first-class products, and outsiders whose equipment can fail at the most inopportune moment. We have compiled a list of the best level manufacturers according to our editors:

  • ADA instruments. A relatively young company, which began its work only in 2008. This nonsense concentrates on measuring, diagnostic, and other instruments used in construction, geodesy and similar fields.
  • Bosch. Germans who need no further introduction. If you are looking for a quality model and have a suitable budget, choose Bosch.
  • DeWALT. When choosing a laser level manufacturer from the list of the best, you cannot ignore this American brand. The products of this brand are not the cheapest, but their assembly, durability and accuracy of work are always at their best.
  • Control. A domestic company that is not inferior in quality to its foreign competitors. The company offers innovative solutions at reasonable prices.

Kinds

There are several types of laser levels. Each of them has its own purpose, advantages and disadvantages.

Spot

This type is the simplest. The beam is turned in the form of an ordinary point. It is very clear and can reach 80 meters. Spot levels are capable of producing beams in three different planes.

Since the device operates over long distances, it can be used in rooms with a large area. This device is used to transfer markings from the floor to the ceiling, determine the installation location of fasteners for hanging furniture, household appliances, and wallpaper stickers.

The advantage is the range and accuracy of the device, as well as its low cost. If you need a straight line, you will have to connect the dots.

Linear

Linear levels project a straight line, although some models can also show 2 perpendicular lines, that is, crosses. The lines are produced by scattering a laser beam through a prism. The operating range is no more than 30 m, which is quite enough for most types of work.

Linear models are considered multifunctional. They are used by professional builders to allocate locations for installing partitions, when installing doors, and when working on tiles . An important function for such levels is self-leveling.

The main advantages of the linear model include long-term operation, large coverage area, minimal error and auto-leveling. The disadvantages include the high cost of the device.

Rotary

The principle of operation is the same as the previous ones, but in rotary ones (they are also called rotary levels), the diode is fixed on a rotating rotor and is located on top of the device. Rotating at high speed, the beam covers an area within a radius of 360 degrees and builds a continuous line at a distance of up to 400 meters.

The advantages of rotary lasers include high accuracy and long luminescence range. Some models have a remote control. Point models help determine the location of an object at the same level on different walls.

The main advantages of point laser levels are long range and high accuracy. The disadvantages include the need to manually draw lines between given points.

How I learned to use a level

The first time I became acquainted with a level was at the institute, in which subject I no longer remember. This theoretical knowledge was forgotten by the time it had to be applied at a construction site and did not want to be remembered.

So I had to learn new things and ask stupid questions to my colleagues about how to use the level.

I remember that I was constantly confused with the resulting values. On the slats, large values mean that it is a hole, and if small, it means a mound, and my brain did not want to perceive this.

Example: I’m shooting a floor and I get two numbers: 1.870 m and 1.820 m. It turns out that the first point is 5 centimeters lower than the second. It didn’t fit into my head that the value of the number meant more of a hole on the surface.

I have made it a rule, and I advise you, to check and recalculate your leveling survey data several times so that there are no doubts.

Read what you need to do before leveling HERE. Here I told you how I poured concrete floors in a garage without a level.

You will also be interested in how to draw up acts of hidden work, ks2, ks 3, if so, then this is for you.

I will be glad to see your comments on the topic of how to use the level.

What is a rotating laser level and what does it mean?

If previously a fishing line with a weight at the end was used for measurement, today a specialized device is used to measure the difference in heights of several points. This meter, which is also called a laser plane builder, is used not only before the start of construction and repair work, but also after its completion. Quality control of the work performed can be identified in a matter of seconds and without the need for manual measurements.

Structurally, the tool is a compact device that is used in conjunction with a stand - a tripod. To construct planes in the design of the tool, a light indicator is used - a laser beam. Before you learn the details of the operating principle of this tool, it should be noted that plane meters are classified into three types:

  1. Optical are the simplest and first levels to appear. Their advantage is their affordable price, but there is also a drawback - you need to know how to use them, since measurements are made manually through a lens system
  2. Electronic - devices that differ from optical ones by the presence of an option for storing data when taking measurements
  3. Laser - compared to optical and electronic, where measurement accuracy depends on the human factor, laser levels are highly accurate and reliable, which is why rotary levels are in particular demand among builders of various fields

Laser levels include a rotary level. By using laser levels, you can construct planes at a distance of up to 100 meters, while optical and electronic levels allow you to measure at a distance of up to 20 meters. The use of additional optical equipment makes it possible to measure with a laser instrument at a distance of up to 400 meters and even up to 1 km.

This is interesting! Rotational means rotating, through which a plane is built.

Models for professional work in small spaces

For professional work with apartments, you need more functional tools that work with a larger number of planes.

The model is suitable for professional tiling, electrical marking, and pipe installation. In addition to the horizontal, it provides two vertical planes with the ability to move horizontally without changing the installation. Accuracy – 0.2 mm per meter, distance – up to 20 m, with a receiver – up to 40 m. Price from 34,000 rubles.

Leica Lino L2P5

The model allows you to build two lines (horizontal and vertical) and five points (up-down-right-left-center of the cross) at a distance of up to 15 m, with receivers up to 30 m. Accuracy 0.3 mm per meter, price - from 25,000 rubles .

What do we do?

As for work on the ground, the choice of leveling method is clear - by eye, see below. But it is better to make a construction and repair level using a laser: its advantage, such as a manifold reduction in the labor intensity of marking work, cannot be missed.

3D laser level and laser level

There are generally 2 types of laser levels on sale: 3-coordinate (3D, pos. A in the figure) and laser levels, pos. B. A 3D level that draws lines, corners, crosses and even, under the control of an external computer, the contours of openings or finishing panels - a complex optical-mechanical design that is unlikely to be repeated by hand. But the main thing is that such devices are very flimsy. Not only an accidental shovel of earth or a dropped tool, but also ordinary construction dust in the room can permanently damage a 3D level. Therefore, devices of this class find rather limited use, and we will take up a laser level - it, homemade, can be fit into the given conditions in all respects.

What we have?

Making a laser level seems to be as easy as shelling pears: attach a laser pointer to a regular bubble level and you’re done. Place everything together on a flat stand, spin it and mark it on the wall. The production of such a “mini-level” usually takes no more than 10 minutes, see for example. video:

Video: homemade mini laser level

The laser level device is shown on the left in Fig. There its main Achilles heel is visible - the initial installation on a tubular bubble level. For accurate initial installation, the beam of the device must be aligned to the horizon along 2 mutually perpendicular planes. But on site, when placing the level on a random support (on the right in the figure), both adjustments turn out to be interdependent! I twisted the tripod leg horizontally in one direction - the beam “went” up or down along the perpendicular. As a result, it can be easier to mark the markings with your hands than to struggle with setting up the laser.

The laser level device and how to use it

Based on this, we will introduce 2 modifications to the design at once: installation of a leveling block on a 2-coordinate level (see below), and a lightweight portable support, independently adjustable to the vertical. On an exactly vertical support, and if you can immediately see where and how much the leveling unit has tilted, it can be quickly and simply set up in one step for the entire marking cycle at a given site.

Although the device of a homemade laser level with a laser pointer instead of a special head is simpler, the procedure for setting it up (see next figure) is no less labor-intensive, and the accuracy and stability are much worse than with manual marking. In this case, 2 more weak points are added to the design: the pointer head and the rotation unit. Where is the guarantee that the pointer beam “hits” exactly along its optical axis? In order to simply move the beam back and forth, their axiality (coaxiality) is not required, which is why laser pointers are cheap. And if the beam is beveled, then when marking by points, instead of straight horizontal lines and plumb lines, you will get tangentoid segments. Their deflection may not be noticeable by eye, but the marking error will exceed the permissible limits.

Device and methods for adjusting a homemade laser level

As for the rotation unit, custom-made parts for it will hardly cost less than the cost of a ready-made laser level. Amateurs with a rotation unit are as clever as they can be. It’s good if there are suitable ready-made parts for it in the storerooms (simply in the trash), as, for example, in the plot:

Video: rechargeable level from a laser module

But this is a single unique product. If there are no suitable components in the stash, craftsmen manage to make laser levels even from... sewer pipes, see video:

Video: laser level from a sewer pipe

We will try to get out of the situation even easier, but observing the conditions set above: accuracy, stability, simplicity.

What is a level

To carry out markings, take measurements and make accurate calculations, use a special device - a level. The device is designed for leveling, that is, determining protruding points of the plane’s height and differences. This is where the name level comes from.

A level is a tool used in construction and geodesy to determine the elevation of protruding surface areas and study the terrain.

Application options for the measuring device:

  • installation of structures and technical structures;
  • creation of high-precision geodetic structures, design;
  • leveling large areas, decorating the area;
  • construction and repair work indoors;
  • forecasting the amount of subsidence of buildings.

In everyday life, the tool is used for any repair work, be it laying floors or installing ceilings.

Levels project laser beams, so they are used to mark corners, brickwork, rows of tiles and other finishes, including wallpaper.

You cannot do without a building level when laying communications, for example, an electrical network indoors. Using a level, determine the location of switches, sockets, and safety panels.

Additional devices and equipment

In addition to the device itself, for work we will need the already mentioned tripod, as well as a special measuring rod with divisions and numbers printed on it. The divisions are stripes of alternating black or red stripes 10 mm wide.

The numbers on the rod are marked in increments of ten cm, and the value from zero to the end of the rod is in decimeters, with the numbers expressed in two digits. So, 50 cm is designated as 05, the number 09 indicates 90 cm, the number 12 indicates 120 cm, etc.

For convenience, the five centimeter marks of each decimeter are also united by a vertical strip, so that the entire strip is marked with signs in the form of the letter “E”, straight and mirrored.

Older models of instruments give an inverted image, and they require a special rack with inverted numbers.

Auxiliary devices for the level

A passport is attached to the level, which must indicate the date of its last check and adjustment, or, as surveyors say, “verification”. Levels are checked at least once every three years, in special workshops, about which another entry is made in the passport.

In addition to the passport, the level kit includes a key for maintenance and a soft flannel for wiping the lenses and, of course, a protective case where it is stored. Models with a horizontal dial - protractor - are equipped with a plumb line for installation exactly at the desired point.

Protect the level from shocks and shocks, even when it is in its case. Modern devices are equipped with a special device that performs precise horizontal adjustment; a strong push, which does not leave the slightest trace outwardly, can damage its delicate mechanism.

Types of laser levels

If you look at the prices for these measuring instruments, you will see a very large range - from $20-30 to $850. As you understand, everything is not just like that. A tool with different capabilities and precision may not cost the same.

With such a device, many jobs become easier and require less time.

To choose a laser level, you first need to decide on the type of work for which you will need it. Select a laser level for this type of work. They are of the following types:

The simplest laser levels only produce points in one or more planes

  • Point (axis builders). Usually three to five points are displayed in different planes. They do not build any lines or planes. It will be possible to see only dots, but at a great distance (to make it clearer, you can compare their principle with laser pointers). Used on large sites to transfer marks. Useful in repairs for marking lines for wallpapering, marking fasteners for pictures, shelves, etc. In more serious operations this type of instrument is not used.
  • Crossliners, line builders, linear levels. Sometimes they are called plane builders, since they essentially form a plane of a certain size (depending on the scan angle). When working with such a laser level, a straight line is displayed on any plane that falls within the laser’s coverage area. This is used in construction and finishing works. The range is usually up to 20 meters, if necessary it can be increased (if there is a mode for working with the receiver). For repairs and interior decoration, it is convenient if the device can form vertical and horizontal lines, and create a “cross” on the floor and ceiling. Due to the peculiarities of beam scanning, the line is displayed only on the part of the room towards which the device is directed. For example, on one wall and part of the ceiling/floor. To get marks on another wall, the device must be turned around. A linear laser level produces one or more planes with a specific scanning angle
  • Rotary plane builders. The functions are the same as crossliners, only the planes rotate 360°. A complex system is used for this, which is reflected in the price. Only professionals can justify tools of this type (prices for this type of laser levels start at $400). They are of no use for home use.

Rotating laser levels rotate the plane 360°

Now choosing a laser level is easier, you already know what type of tool you need. For most, this is a line/plane builder.

Level design

This device is equipped with a durable plastic housing that protects it from dust, dirt and moisture. For normal operation of the device, it requires a special tripod or a flat surface.

Currently, there are two types of laser levels:

  1. Plasma models. They have built-in special prisms through which diode light passes. The number of lines depends on the number of these same prisms. For example, a level with two prisms will produce a vertical and horizontal line. Devices in this group are most often used in everyday life because they are characterized by a short range of the light beam.
  2. Rotary levels. This equipment is already considered professional and is used in large-scale construction. The long range of the beams is due to the operation of a rotating diode that projects the light.

Rotary levels, as a rule, have more functionality than plasma levels. These devices allow you to designate circular sectors and level doorways. However, a wide selection of functions, of course, affects the price of the device.

There is another type of building levels - point levels. But it is not very convenient to use.

How to choose an optical level - determine the classes of the instrument

When deciding how to choose a level, you need to take into account the required measurement accuracy. And this will depend on the level of geodetic work being carried out. In our country, levels are divided into several classes. If the main high-altitude base is required, then these are classes 1 and 2 of devices. If it is necessary to perform work with the highest precision, class 1 devices are needed. High results can only be obtained with the most modern geodetic equipment. They allow you to use the appropriate measurement methods.

The latest technologies that are used to create class 1 devices help not only to avoid standard and most common errors, but also small errors during operation. This all applies to a high-precision optical level. This device is equipped with a plane-parallel plate, and this is its main component. There is also a compensator or similar part, which is a contact level. This is often a bubble that can always be seen in a rotating telescope. All these are devices of the type N-05, NI-002 and NI-004.

Class 2 levels also perform high-quality work. They also belong to high-precision optical levels and have plane-parallel plates. The devices are equipped with compensators (T-contact level). They are most often used where the required level of accuracy is needed. These are devices such as N1, N-05, NI-002, NI-004 and NI-007. Class 3 devices are also optical, only with a built-in compensator. Class 4 devices - available either only with a level or only with a compensator. They are usually used where accuracy is not particularly important, you just need to roughly arrange the black and red marks.

Methods for setting up a laser level

To obtain the most accurate measurement results, the laser level must be adjusted.

This procedure is performed as follows:

  1. The laser level is set manually so that it is level. This can be achieved using a bubble type level.
  2. The tripod is being adjusted. The positioning is checked in the direction vertically downwards towards the reference beam of light.
  3. You can configure it automatically.

Expensive models have a built-in stabilizer. The functioning of this type of unit is performed by a pendulum mechanism or a gyroscope.

In this case, it is necessary to reconfigure.

How does a laser level work?

The operating principle of a laser level is to form a projection of a laser beam on one or more objects surrounding the device. The projection in the form of a line or point serves as a guide when performing work. Accurate readings from a laser level are only possible if it is properly leveled. Depending on the selected model, this procedure can be performed either automatically or manually. Manual adjustment is carried out using a traditional bubble and slider system. Laser levels can be static or rotating.

Fastening methods

Laser levels are used in a variety of conditions. Depending on them, the fastening method is selected. The device can be placed on the floor or any other flat surface. In this case, settings are made according to the device location parameters.

On large construction sites, laser levels are mounted on a tripod. This method allows the device to operate stably. Even with touch, wind, or vibration, the laser will not budge.

When working with metal structures, it is recommended to use a magnetic type of laser. Its body is equipped with special magnetic plates. They allow you to securely fix the laser on a metal surface.

All types of laser levels have straps. They can be hung, worn on a belt or on a bag.

Types of levels, their purpose

Levels are divided into subgroups according to two indicators: measurement accuracy and operating principle. According to the first parameter, the following varieties are distinguished:

  • highly accurate. The error in measurements is 0.2-0.5 mm per 1 km. dv. progress;
  • accurate. The error in measurements is 0.5-2.0 mm per 1 km. dv. progress;
  • technical. The error in measurements is 2-10 mm per 1 km. dv. progress;

To mark the terrain, determine changes in relief and make reference to specific points, the simplest products with low accuracy are suitable PHOTO: stroibloger.com

During work, at each stage, it is important to accurately record the device data in order to eliminate possible errors. Based on the operating principle, products are divided into:

  • geometric. The sighting beam is emitted, the level is brought to a horizontal position, which makes it possible to measure the difference in the location of the points. Points must be marked on the territory using special slats. Such leveling can be simple or complex (carried out from 1 or more points that change sequentially);
  • trigonometric. Devices called theodolites are indispensable when measuring permissible inclination levels. The distance and inclination are measured between the device and the control point, and then the required value is calculated using the formula;
  • hydrostatic. Devices that consist of two communicating vessels. In them, the difference in heights at various elevations is determined by the liquid level. Such vessels, which are connected to each other using a hose or sleeve, are installed at control marks. The technique is quite accurate, but is limited in distance by the length of the sleeve or hose;
  • optical-mechanical. Devices that make it possible to determine the parameters of points using a light beam and special slats. The devices are equipped with an optical tube to make visual observations. To make measurements with such a device, special skills and abilities are required;
  • laser Precision devices that project a narrow beam using a laser onto various surfaces. Such products are easy to use and make it possible to work with both points and planes;
  • digital. Laser or optical products that display the received data in digital form will store it and, in some cases, partially analyze it. The devices are highly accurate and make it possible not to require the help of an assistant. However, they are expensive and susceptible to mechanical damage.

Levels can be used for various tasks where it is necessary to perfectly accurately correlate the position of two points relative to each other horizontally or vertically. For example, the level of inclination of the building relative to its foundation.

How to choose?

There are several important points to pay attention to:

  • projection error. With an error range of 1-3 mm/m, all calculations will be erroneous. The optimal indicator is 0.5 mm/m. With such an error, high measurement accuracy is ensured;
  • ranges. It is necessary to select a level with a high measuring range so that it can be used at various distances;
  • specifications. The optimal wavelength is 635 nanometers;
  • self-leveling. It is better to choose a device that has this function. The most acceptable alignment angle is 5 degrees;
  • power supply. If you choose a device that operates from the mains, this can significantly complicate its use on open construction sites. Battery life may not be sufficient to complete all tasks. The optimal solution is to choose a level that can operate both from the mains and from the built-in battery;
  • possibility of remote control. This will allow you to be at a considerable distance from the device, controlling its operation;
  • housing protection class. For example, a rotating level for external use has a high degree of protection so that mechanical contamination cannot penetrate into the housing. IP54 marking is the best choice.

You also need to pay attention to the device manufacturer.

Installing a leveling tripod

When installing the level, it is important to follow a number of rules. Tripod setup is of utmost importance

The tripod must stand firmly on the ground. Otherwise, measurements may have unacceptable errors. Also, if the tripod is in an unstable position, there is a risk of it falling along with the device. If the soil is soft, then the ends of the tripod legs need to be pressed into the soil. On slippery surfaces and when there are gusts of wind, it is advisable to use a metal base (in the shape of a triangle). This base has special holes for tripod legs.

When installing a tripod, you should strive to ensure that the position of the platform on which the level will be installed is horizontal. This will allow you to easily install the device in the desired position for operation. The sighting axis of the device must be strictly in the horizontal plane. In this case, you can count on high-quality measurements of excesses and obtaining the required result.
