In addition to the sawmill or winch, homemade boat motors made from chainsaws have become extremely popular among the masses. The fact that chainsaws are distinguished by high engine power, small size and weight allows the power unit to be used in many areas of activity and under any environmental conditions. The boat motor, which is assembled on the basis of a chainsaw, has a special tightness, which allows the user to use it in any position.
Choosing a saw for remodeling
When choosing a chainsaw that will become a “donor” for a new device, you should be guided by the following basic parameters:
The device of the Ural chainsaw.
- Power. The best option is a motor in the range of 2-3 kW. This power will be sufficient for most devices.
- Price. Despite confidence in success, the engine may not withstand a load for which the tool is not designed, so experimenting with expensive models is not recommended. It is best to use old models: they are highly reliable, and if they break down, you will not regret the money spent.
- Simplicity of design. The saw should be chosen so that it is easy not only to disassemble it, but also to find inexpensive spare parts for it.

Necessary parts for assembling a motor for a boat with your own hands
Below we list the main components and parts that, with the right approach and quick work, will make a homemade motor for a boat from a chainsaw. Of course, the main part is the chainsaw. Next you will need a gearbox from an angle grinder (you can also take an old, unnecessary model) and transmission oil. We will use a clamp for fastening. And the second important part is the chainsaw attachment in the form of a screw. You can use either the previous screw from an old engine or assemble it yourself. Procedure
Once a suitable drawing (component layout diagram) has been selected, the necessary tools have been found and the Druzhba saw has been dismantled, you can begin assembly. You should start with the frame, since all the elements of the motor unit will be attached to it. The process is completed by assembling the chassis, as well as additional blocks: if desired, headlights, gearbox and clutch, if the drawing is more complex and requires them. For the first time, it is best to choose a simpler drawing.
Frame assembly
The first stage involves the following actions:
- bend the pipe so that it takes the shape of 2 spars with edges pointing upward;
- the steering wheel is welded at the back (the easiest way is to weld two handles, but if available, you can use a ready-made steering wheel from a motorcycle);
- It is recommended to strengthen the structure with cross members from the same pipe;
- We cut out a “shelf” from a metal sheet for the battery, which we weld to the rear bends of the side members.
It turns out to be a vague resemblance to a sleigh. For heavier structures with more powerful power units, the frame can be made in the shape of a cube or similar to a tractor for 4-wheeled homemade products.
Assembly of the motor block
The most difficult stage is assembling the components. Before you begin, you need to mark on the frame the places to which the parts will be attached. The principle is as follows:
- a motor with a gearbox is mounted on top of the crossbars;
- a fuel tank is installed under the engine (a separate support should be welded under it), the battery is mounted on a special platform;
- To prevent exhaust gases from entering the control unit, you can make an exhaust pipe from a 7 cm metal tube with a diameter of up to 25 cm.
This is the basic version without a gearbox, which can be installed upon request. The drawings will help you understand the assembly in more detail. By and large, the details of “Friendship” are simply rearranged. The hitch is connected to the output shaft of the chainsaw.
Chassis assembly
There are at least two options: you can use a ready-made axle shaft from a car, or you can make a homemade walk-behind tractor driven by physical force (the “chassis” of an old cart or wheelbarrow will come in handy, which will significantly reduce the weight and dimensions, because a car axle shaft will require the use of tires). In the first case, you will have to organize the drive from the motor to the axle shaft, which is not easy, so welding the “running” wheelbarrow to the frame is a more understandable option.
It is not difficult to figure out how to make a walk-behind tractor from a chainsaw if you understand the general operating principle of both units. In addition to “Friendship”, “Ural” and “Taiga” saws are also suitable for the walk-behind tractor. When deciding to experiment, you should understand that the homemade product will have limited functionality and low power, allowing you to process a maximum of 20 acres.

The screw and the bar will close the pin connecting the bowl and the shaft.
Only after completing the steps described above can you fill in the transmission oil. Next, you secure the lid with sealant. Some owners recommend creating a gas handle for your convenience in controlling a chainsaw-based motor.
What work does the manufacturer have to do?
Throughout the entire process of manufacturing a boat power unit, it is important to adhere to the correct work algorithm. First of all, the manufacturer must carefully study the detailed drawings prepared in advance. In order to prevent critical errors during design, you need to indicate in them the dimensions of all parts used, as well as the methods of their initial fastening.
The operator's subsequent sequence of actions should consist of the following steps:
- Replacing the working parts of a chainsaw with a metal pipe with a propeller;
- Installing and checking the fasteners necessary to secure the screw;
- Connecting the gearbox shaft to the power unit from a chainsaw;
- Development of the required rotary unit;
- Adaptation of the gearbox shaft used to the propeller;
- Final assembly of equipment.
The working mechanisms used for assembly will need to be prepared:
- a working and fully operational power unit from a chainsaw;
- gearbox - can be removed from an old grinder;
- propeller - you can take it ready-made or assemble it yourself;
- transom - purchased separately;
- connecting clamp.
