A micrometer is a professional hand-held measuring instrument with an accuracy of up to 0.01 mm. The micrometer is used to determine the lengths and outer diameters of small products (up to 1000 mm). The most widely used are smooth micrometers (MK) consisting of a bracket with a heel, a screw with a fine thread, a bushing-stem and a ratchet. On the stem sleeve there are two scales with graduation accuracy of 1 and 0.5 mm. The scale, accurate to hundredths of a millimeter, is located on the conical part of the drum.

Measurement technique with a smooth micrometer

To obtain an accurate size, the product to be measured must be placed and fixed motionless with a ratchet between the heel and the screw. However, it is impossible to measure rough surfaces covered with a layer of rust, metal dust or scale. You should not work with heated parts; due to thermal expansion, you will not get an accurate result. The drum ratchet must be rotated slowly and carefully. Readings from the micrometer are taken in the following order:

  • stem scale with an accuracy of 1 mm,
  • scale with an accuracy of 0.5 mm;
  • drum scale.

The three results obtained are added together and the exact value is obtained.

Preparing for work.

6.1. Before starting work, familiarize yourself with the passport for the indicator.

6.2. Before using the micrometer, thoroughly wipe the measuring surfaces, check the smooth movement of the microscrew and the zero setting. If the zero setting is off, bring the measuring surfaces into contact with each other or with the setting standard, and secure the microscrew with a stopper. Then unscrew the drum locking screw with a wrench so that by rotating the drum you can align the zero stroke of the drum with the longitudinal stroke of the stem. At the same time, make sure that the distance from the end of the conical part of the drum to the edge of the zero stroke of the stem closest to the end does not exceed 0.15 mm. Secure the drum locking screw with a wrench.

Measuring range with a smooth micrometer

Due to restrictions on the stroke of a screw with a precise thread, smooth micrometers are produced in certain measurement ranges - from 0 to 25 mm and up to 900-1000 mm. The upper limit of measurements is indicated in the designation of the device: MK-25 - from 0 to 25 mm, MK-50 - from 25 to 50 mm, etc. up to MK-1000 - from 900 to 1000 mm. In addition to the measurement range, an important characteristic of a smooth micrometer is its accuracy class - 1st or 2nd. The permissible error limit of the device depends on it. Depending on the measurement range, instruments with accuracy class 1 have an error of 2 to 6 microns, and with accuracy class 2 – from 4 to 10 microns.

Counting on the micrometer's hatched scales is sometimes inconvenient. If your vision is poor or the lighting is poor, electronic microcontrollers solve this problem. They differ little from mechanical ones; the planes with strokes are replaced by incremental capacitances, inductive conversion elements, and an electronic unit with a digital display. The converter is two disk plates with wires. One disk moves with a bolt, the other is rigidly fixed and held in place by a key. They move with the bolt to its full extent.

The micrometer bracket has a processor unit, a display with indicators of 0.01 or 0.001 mm, a zero-setting function, and there are also possibilities for connecting to external computing devices. The device is powered by a battery with a service life of one and a half years. Electromicrometers have a measurement limit of up to 300 mm. They make many different modifications, the parameters of which may vary. So, there are ones with spherical planes for measuring tubular elements, and with disks for measuring soft objects.

Micrometric depth gauge

This device consists of a basic base, a microbolt with measuring limits of 25 mm is fixed in it, and there are also replaceable measuring inserts of various lengths. The limit for measurements is 300 mm.

Such devices, like MK, are mechanical, digital devices.

The measurement inaccuracy with a minimum insert is 5 mm.

The error includes:

  1. Inaccuracy of the measuring unit.
  2. Inaccuracies in flatness and parallelism of the screw with the heel. They occur when turning corners or stopping. This type of inaccuracy comes in different shapes (round, flat). There are also inaccuracies of objects with force during measurement.
  3. Change in bracket due to force.
  4. Incorrect installation measures.
  5. Inaccuracy due to temperature effects is typical for large instruments.
  6. Electrical components may malfunction in electronic devices.

An error is allowed for the head, if it acts as a separate device, within the limits established by GOST 6507-90. There are special systems with error limits for instruments. They have indicators that depend on the measurement limits. The inaccuracy grid indicates the permissible error G of the device at the measurement boundary point.

These limiting indicators consist of the inaccuracy of the micrometer unit, the inaccuracy due to the deformation of the instrument brackets, the bumpiness, and non-parallelism of the measured planes.

Calibration and adjustment (verification) of the micrometer are performed using gauge blocks at several points of measurement boundaries, respectively, ISO 3611:2010, DIN 863, GOST 6207-90. They are taken to find out the G value, that is, the maximum inaccuracy of the device at all points of the measurement range. Here are the standard, desirable parameters for gauge gauges, for setting up the device: 3.1; 6.5; 9.7; 12.5; 15.8; 19.0; 21.9; 25 mm.

ACCEPTANCE

3.1. To check the compliance of the micrometer with the requirements of this standard, state tests, acceptance control, and periodic tests are carried out.

3.2. State tests - according to GOST 8.001-80* and GOST 8.383-80*.

3.3. During acceptance inspection, each micrometer is checked for compliance with the requirements of clauses 2.1.1.2, 2.1.1.3 (except for checking changes in readings due to bending of the bracket), 2.1.1.4-2.1.1.6, 2.1.1.8-2.1.1.12, 2.1.1.15, 2.1 .1.17, 2.1.1.18, 2.1.2.2-2.1.2.5, 2.1.3.3, 2.1.4.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.

3.4. Periodic tests are carried out at least once every three years on at least three micrometers of each type and accuracy class from those that have passed acceptance control for compliance with all the requirements of this standard. The test results are considered satisfactory if all tested micrometers meet all tested requirements.

CONTROL AND TEST METHODS

4.1. Micrometer verification - according to MI 782-85.

4.2. The impact of environmental climatic factors during transportation is checked in climatic chambers. Tests are carried out in the following mode: at a temperature of plus (50±3) °C, minus (50±3) °C and at relative humidity (95±3)% at a temperature of 35 °C. Exposure in the climate chamber in each mode is 2 hours. After testing, the micrometer error and the parallelism of flat measuring surfaces should not exceed the values ​​​​established in clauses 2.1.1.3 and 2.1.1.4.

4.3. When determining the influence of transport shaking, an impact stand is used, which creates shaking with an acceleration of 30 m/s² and a frequency of 80-120 beats per minute.

Boxes with packaged micrometers are attached to the stand and tested with a total number of impacts of 15,000. After testing, the micrometers must meet the requirements established in clauses 2.1.1.3 and 2.1.1.4.
