Every year, equipment such as a chainsaw is improved and becomes more complex. There are a lot of additional functions that make it easier to use, for example, automatic chain lubrication. Vibration suppression, easy starting and the like. But, alas, even the most expensive and functional mechanism can fail.
Therefore, it is important to know how you can correct the main malfunctions of the tool yourself, and in which cases no work will help and the unit will have to be thrown away.
Fuel supply system repair
Fuel may not enter the cylinder for the following reasons:
- Fuel filter is dirty. You should remove the fuel hose and check how the fuel flows. If the stream is weak, the filter may need to be cleaned. It is taken out through the filler hole of the fuel tank and cleaned; in case of severe contamination, it is replaced with a new one. As a preventative measure, it is recommended to replace the fuel filter once every three months.
- Clogged breather (hole in the fuel tank cap). They also check by disconnecting the hose; if clogged, clean it with a needle.
- Lack or insufficient fuel. There may be several reasons for the malfunction. The first reason is a clogged air filter. Air stops flowing into the carburetor in the required quantity, and therefore, due to the fuel mixture being too rich, engine operation is disrupted. The dirty filter is carefully removed, cleaned and rinsed in water, then dried and replaced.
Another reason is incorrect carburetor adjustment. Adjustment is made with three screws.
Timely replacement of the fuel filter guarantees a complete fuel supply
The fuel hose and choke actuator must fit tightly to the fittings
The throttle cable must be in place.
During work, you must use the instructions, otherwise you can only make things worse.
And the last reason is a violation of the integrity of the membrane or clogging of the carburetor channels.
To repair a carburetor yourself, you need to become familiar with all its parts.
All parts must be clean, dry and in good working order.
Pro Shtil 250
The Shtil 250 saw is perfectly balanced and combines such qualities as high power and at the same time low weight and ease of use. The power allows you to install larger tires on this model, which means sawing thicker tree trunks, which increases productivity. Weight affects comfort when working with a tool for a long time. Small dimensions allow the saw to work in places with limited space or in dense thickets. This saw is convenient for clearing branches from a fallen tree or cutting out small growth.
The Shtil 250 saw is designed using the most modern developments of German engineers, which we will talk about a little later.
Of course, the power unit of the Stihl MS 250 chainsaw cannot compare in power with the engine of a professional model, but it is also capable of a lot. The difference with a household chainsaw is felt as soon as you start making the first cut. If desired, buyers can purchase a richer package for the Shtil 250, in which it is additionally equipped with devices that increase the comfort of using the saw.
Typical types of chainsaw malfunctions
There are simply a huge number of different types of chainsaws on sale, most of them have approximately the same design and technical characteristics. Possible malfunctions of the chainsaw are as follows:
- Engine wear or failure.
- Malfunction of the installed fuel supply system.
- Problems with the system responsible for removing and extinguishing gases formed during fuel combustion.
- Severe wear or malfunction of the system responsible for supplying lubricant to the chain.
The frequency of maintenance and many other points are indicated by the manufacturer in the operating instructions. It is worth considering that incorrect use of the tool and violation of basic recommendations often leads to serious malfunctions of the chainsaw.
Malfunctions of Chinese chainsaws: review of popular ones and ways to solve them
Buying a cheap chainsaw made in China is not particularly difficult: a huge number of gas-powered tools from the Middle Kingdom are available in markets, construction hypermarkets and online stores. However, a low price almost always hides poor quality.
The most popular malfunctions of Chinese chainsaws include:
- Poor performance of the lubrication system. Clogged oil channels are cleaned, and if the oil pump fails, replacement is necessary.
- The starter cable breaks.
- Breakage of the plastic starter axis. To replace it, a regular metal bolt will do.
If there is the slightest suspicion that the chainsaw is not working properly, you should immediately carry out a full diagnostic of the tool. Only with proper operation and timely maintenance can you count on a long service life of the chainsaw.

Spark plug problem
A problem with spark plugs is one of the most common causes of chainsaw breakdowns!
This is one of the most common reasons why the engine stalls when cold. As a rule, its electrodes are covered with a layer of corrosion and carbon deposits, as a result of which the distance between their ends decreases - and there is ultimately no room for a spark to jump through.

Ask a Question
Each manufacturer has its own distance between the electrodes, so before inspecting the spark plug you must carefully study the operating instructions and technical specifications of the tool.
The cause of corrosion and carbon deposits on the electrodes is uneven fuel supply, which is already a problem with the carburetor, which can be solved separately. There doesn’t have to be soot on the spark plug - there may be no spark because the fuel completely fills it when it’s hot, which also indicates problems with the carburetor.
The spark plug itself must be removed, dried and checked to see how the spark passes through it:
- First, remove the wire and unscrew the spark plug.
- Return the wire end to its original position.
- Place the spark plug on the cylinder with the skirt.
- Check for a spark by starting with the starter.
If there was a spark in this way, then you need to immediately move on to the problem with the carburetor. If not, then the spark plug must either be cleaned of rust and carbon deposits, or replaced. It is also possible that adjusting the distance between the electrode contacts will help.
Other reasons for the lack of spark include:
Generator unit malfunction. If this is the reason, then the problem can only be solved by completely replacing it.
Poor or broken contact between the spark plug tip and the electrically conductive high voltage cradle. There can be a simple adjustment using a tester.
The final check for problems with the spark plugs can be completed with a number of simple procedures, after which the chainsaw should start:
- Unscrew the spark plug and give it a full inspection.
- Clean it from rust and deposits, dry it
- Place the ends of the electrodes at the correct distance.
- Drain all excess fuel from the engine of the tool so that the ignition compartment does not flood.
- Place the spark plug back and try lighting again.
If these procedures helped and the saw began to work and the chain began to move, then you can work like this for about 5-30 minutes until the spark plug floods again
It is important to understand that this solution is temporary and just indicative. The main problem lies in the carburetor.
The question with him is ambiguous: in any case, it is necessary to adjust the fuel supply, but how to do this - yourself or with the help of a mechanic - is up to you.
When setting up the carburetor, be sure to use a tachometer, which will allow you to find out the number of engine revolutions with greater accuracy.
Based on them, you can already adjust its operating mode by adjusting the tightness of the screws on the carburetor block in several scenarios:
Setting for continuous operation at low speeds.
Arranging the correct fuel supply at maximum speed.
Setting up idle speed.

Ask a Question
It is possible that the carburetor is sucking in a lot of air from the outside, which is why the saw begins to behave strangely at idle speed, and the amount of revolutions changes on its own. This can be solved by using ordinary gaskets on the carburetor, with the help of which it is necessary to ensure its tightness.
A complete inspection of the carburetor is necessary if it was not possible to determine a specific problem, but there is confidence that the jamming of the saw is associated with this particular part.
The audit is carried out as follows:
- It is necessary to remove all communications (wires and hoses) from the device;
- Carry out cleaning and purging. It is better to do this without removing the carburetor;
- Remove the product and clean it a second time so that no traces of fuel or oil remain inside;
- Gradually disassemble the device, guided by the drawing in the documentation or drawing up a diagram yourself;
- All channels must be blown out with compressed air, and parts must be washed in an industrial solvent;
- Give the parts at least 2 hours to dry;
- Reassemble the carburetor, strictly following the instructions in the documents and diagram;
- Connect back.
Features of drawing up an act for writing off an instrument
The act can be drawn up on a sheet of A4 paper or on the organization’s letterhead. In most cases, it is compiled in one copy, which is then transferred to the accounting department. If necessary, additional copies can be made. Since this document relates to the internal document flow of the organization, there is no need to certify it with a seal. But it will require recording in a special journal.
The act of writing off an instrument that has become unusable must contain:
FULL NAME. and the signature of the manager under the heading “I approve”;
Problems with the chain lubrication system
If the chain is not supplied with lubricant, the following events may occur:
- Rapid chain wear (blunting of teeth, stretching, tire abrasion)
- Engine wear due to heavy loads placed on the tool
- Worn drive sprocket, which also needs lubrication
Malfunctions of the chain lubrication system and how to fix them yourself
If the chain does not receive oil, the reason may be an insufficient amount of lubricant in the tank, a malfunction of the oil pump, or damage to the channels. The breakdown can be repaired only after determining the exact cause of the chainsaw malfunction.

Checking the ignition system
The first thing you need to do if your chainsaw breaks down is to inspect the spark plug by disconnecting the wire and carefully unscrewing it with a special wrench.
Components of the chainsaw ignition system: 1 – flywheel with magnets, 2 – ignition module, 3 – spark plug, 4 – high voltage wire
The spark plug is unscrewed to check its condition
Her appearance speaks volumes:
- Dry. Most likely, the fuel mixture is not getting into the cylinder. The problem is not in the ignition system, so the spark plug is screwed back in.
- Heavily splashed with fuel. The reason for the excess fuel mixture lies either in violation of the starting rules or in incorrect carburetor adjustment. The spark plug is thoroughly wiped, the fuel supply is turned off and the starter is turned on to remove excess fuel and ventilate the combustion chamber. Then the candle is placed in place and the mechanism is started again.
- Covered with black soot. This may indicate the use of low-quality oil, an incorrectly adjusted carburetor, or an incorrectly calculated ratio of gasoline to oil. The spark plug should be washed, removed from carbon deposits with a sharp object (an awl or a needle), the electrodes should be wiped with sandpaper and placed in place.
When checking the spark plug, you need to pay attention to the gap between the electrodes: 0.5 to 0.65 mm is considered normal. Damaged or worn gasket must be replaced
A large amount of black carbon deposits on the spark plug indicates problems with the engine.
To be completely sure, you should also check for a spark. To do this, put the ignition cable on the spark plug, connect the spark plug nut and the cylinder with pliers, turn on the starter and watch for the appearance of a spark. If it is missing, the spark plug needs to be replaced. If the new spark plug also does not produce a spark, the problem is in the high-voltage wire or in a broken connection to the spark plug.
Prevention
Improper care and use of the tool will shorten its service life. To extend its service life until the next repair, it is necessary to follow some preventive recommendations.
- Before each start, check the serviceability and tension of the chain, as well as the sharpness of the teeth.
- During the sawing process, give the tool a periodic rest, especially if we are talking about household or semi-professional class chainsaws.
- After completing the work, clean the chain, tire, air filter, housing and other cracks and grooves where sawdust could get in.
- Rotate the tire periodically to ensure even tire wear.
- Use only high-quality types of oils and fuels.
- You cannot store the fuel mixture for a long time, so drain the remainder from the tool and dispose of it.
Work should only be carried out when you are sure that everything is in order. Performing such simple preventive procedures can significantly extend the service life of the tool.

External condition is an important criterion
When a chainsaw has been stored in a store for a long time, you need to check the serviceability of the device before purchasing. Don't try to start the instrument right away. First of all, it is important to evaluate the appearance of the device and check whether the case contains:
- kinks;
- dents;
- cracks
Particular attention should be paid to the pipes. If these parts are deformed, they should be replaced immediately. If the device has been stored for a long time, all available fuel must be drained completely. Oil and gasoline mixed with each other will form sediment over a long period of time. It can ruin the condition of the carburetor.
Chainsaw chain problems
In addition to problems with the engine, the chainsaw may experience operational problems due to a malfunction of the cutting (sawing) unit, consisting of an oil pump, bar and saw chain.
There is no oil getting to the tire
Usually, if oil does not flow to the chainsaw chain, you need to check the channels through which oil is supplied to the tire and clean them of dirt. If the previous steps did not reveal the cause of the problem, then you will have to check the oil pump. To do this you need:
- remove part of the chainsaw casing;
- remove the coupling;
- unscrew the 3 screws and remove the cover hiding the pump;
- get to the worm gear gear that rotates the pump shaft.
If the thread on it is worn out, the shaft does not rotate, the pump does not work, and the chain is not lubricated. A worn gear needs to be replaced. You can also remove the oil pump itself and manually try to pump oil through it. If it does not pump, the pump should be replaced.
Chainsaw oil filter
Also, a lack of lubricant may be due to its leakage. You should check how tightly the pipes coming from the oil pump are connected. If the tightness is broken, the tubes are replaced with new ones.
The chain breaks
If the chain breaks while the chainsaw is running, this could happen when it hits a hard object, such as a nail. If the chain constantly breaks, then the reasons may be the following.
- Low quality of the metal from which the saw chain is made. It is necessary to buy gas cutter saws from reputable brands.
- Chain overheating due to poor lubrication. As a result, the saw overheats, the properties of the metal change, and it breaks under load. It is necessary to check the entire chainsaw lubrication system (discussed above).
You can also learn about the reasons for frequent circuit breaks from this video.
The chain doesn't turn
This nuisance often plagues inexperienced chainsaw owners. They forget to remove the brake after starting the engine. As a result, the chain does not spin, the brake system overheats, and the clutch mechanism fails. The problem is solved by removing the saw from the brake. If the clutch is not burnt out, you will notice the chain turning. Otherwise, the clutch mechanism will need to be replaced.
The chain gets dull quickly
Basically, the reason that the chain becomes dull quickly is the poor quality of the saw. Trying to save money on buying branded chains, chainsaw owners buy saws from unknown manufacturers, or, due to inexperience, purchase counterfeits of well-known brands. It is best to buy a cutting element for a gas cutter in company stores. Stihl saw chains are very popular among owners of this equipment.
The chain doesn't stop
If, when working with a chainsaw, you notice that the saw chain does not stop at the right moment, then this breakdown may have 2 options.
- The brake band is dirty. When operating the saw, dirt, sawdust, dust, etc. may get under the band. As a result, the brake mechanism becomes blocked and the chain does not stop when the gas is released. The problem is eliminated by cleaning this unit.
- The brake band is worn out. This element of the brake system needs to be replaced.
The chain is jammed
This happens when the drive or driven sprocket wears out. The chain usually starts to jam under load. But without load the saw can rotate. The photo below shows a worn chainsaw drive sprocket.
The next photo shows that the reason why the chain jams must be looked for at the location of the driven sprocket.
But what to do if the chainsaw is completely jammed, and all attempts to pull the starter are unsuccessful? This malfunction sometimes occurs on Chinese-made chainsaws. It is caused by the bolts that screw the engine to the plastic casing of the unit becoming loose due to vibration. These bolts are located directly under the flywheel (magneto). In the photo below, arrows show the location of the problem bolts.
As they unscrew, they begin to rub against the flywheel and can completely jam the chainsaw. The following photo shows the flywheel with some scuff marks from the bolts.
To fix the problem, you will need to remove the flywheel from the engine shaft and tighten the bolts.
The chainsaw cuts crookedly
This problem can occur if the chain is dull or improperly sharpened. This applies to a greater extent to new chainsaws. But if the tire is worn out, then even after replacing the chain you will notice that the saw is pulled to the side. Tire wear can be easily determined by placing it on a level table and applying a square to it, as shown in the following photo.
In this case, you can see that there is a gap of about 2 mm between the tire and the corner. It is because of this one-sided tire wear that the chainsaw cuts crookedly. The problem can only be solved by replacing the tire with a new one.
Running in Chinese chainsaws
Many users will argue - well, well, when it comes to brands: Stihl, Echo, etc. can afford to have high-quality production processes. What about cheap Chinese? The answer is yes, their surface cleanliness may not be at the highest level. Although it should be borne in mind that the same Shtils are also produced in China, which does not make them worse. But often normal operating modes without increased torques (without the tire jamming in the barrel, which should be avoided at any other moment) provide more benefits than “enriching the fuel mixture” or, God forbid, idling.
Causes of malfunctions and repairs
No spark
Spark problems are the most common in practice. The following factors can cause them:
- Errors that occurred when adjusting the carburetor;
- Exceeding the proportion of oil in the mixture with gasoline;
- Air filter clogged.
All of the above problems one way or another lead to the appearance of carbon deposits on the electrodes of the spark plug, resulting in a corrosion process.
You can determine the absence of a spark using the following sequence of actions:
- The first step is to remove the tip of the high-voltage wire.
- The next step is to unscrew the spark plug.
- The tip is put back on.
- The candle's skirt leans against the cylinder.
- Starting is done using a starter.
If everything is in order, a spark will run between the electrodes. Otherwise, you need to clean everything, and if necessary, use a probe to change the distance between the electrodes. The required distance can be read in the instructions. Depending on the manufacturer, the distance can be from half a centimeter to one fifth.
The solution to the problem described above is not exhaustive, since there are other reasons for the chainsaw to fail. Some of them can be solved temporarily, for one start of the tool, if the work needs to be done urgently. This is done by doing the following:
- Using a key, the spark plug is unscrewed.
- The candle is wiped with a clean rag.
- Next, the candle needs to be dried. This takes about half an hour.
- Using a file, carbon deposits are removed and the gap between the electrodes is adjusted.
- Fuel is leaking from the spark plug channel.
- The canal is dried.
- All parts are returned and an attempt is made to start the saw.
As mentioned above, these measures are temporary. After finishing work with the saw, it will stall again, and the best solution in this situation would be to have it repaired by professionals.
Fuel supply problems
The first thing you need to do when checking the serviceability of the fuel supply is to make sure that it is present in the tank. If the tank is full, you can check the pumping. To do this, the tube is disconnected from the carburetor. Now you can start checking. If there are no problems, fuel will be supplied in spurts in the volumes specified by the manufacturer. The reason for the absence or very weak fuel supply can be either a clogged channel through which the fuel is transferred, or problems with the fuel filter.
In some cases, starting problems may be due to the tank being too full.
Another reason may be the quality of the fuel mixture. If you fill it too much and then do not use the saw for a long time, chemical processes may begin to occur, which will then lead to problems with the tool.
Filter failure
The reason why a chainsaw does not start well may be a malfunction of one of the filters. The fuel filter can be checked after pumping, which was described above. After it has become clear that the fuel is not flowing or is flowing too poorly, you need to empty the tank of the mixture. Then you should remove the filter itself. If it is clogged, it can be cleaned, but it would be better to replace it with a new one. If your saw is frequently used in dusty areas, cleaning the filter should become a routine activity.
A clogged air filter will cause the saw to stall frequently or stop starting altogether.
To clean, the filter must be pulled out, but very carefully. If handled carelessly, dust can get into vital segments of the saw.
This risks leaving the repairs to professionals.
The above describes the most common problems that can arise with a chainsaw. If the damage is minor, you can fix it yourself, but first of all you should study the instructions. Different saws have their own characteristics. Accordingly, the details of the repair may vary.
Where it is located?
The breather on the Husqvarna chainsaw, as in models from different manufacturers, is located in the tank. Sometimes it becomes clogged, which leads to problems with starting the tool or the chainsaw runs intermittently or does not start.
How to fix the problem? Here are several options:
- use a compressor for cleaning;
- Clean the small breather hole with a needle.
In both cases you have to get to this detail. Taking into account the structural features of chainsaws, in order to clean the breather, you will have to remove the handle of the device.
Sparks on the spark plug
Checking the spark on the spark plugs is the first step in diagnosing the unit.
The most common reason why a saw refuses to work is a malfunction of the spark plug electrodes.
The reasons why the ignition device stops working may be as follows:
- Incorrect carburetor adjustment.
- Increased oil level in gasoline (acceptable oil content depends on the specific chainsaw model).
- Contamination of the air filtration system that interferes with their operation.
- Excess fuel in spark plug channels.
- Disconnection of the high-voltage cradle to the end of the spark plug.
- Ignition unit failure.
Expert opinion Kulikov Vladimir Sergeevich
All of these factors lead to the growth of charred accumulations on electrical conductors. Deposits prevent spark formation. Therefore, instruments cannot function when cold. Lack of maintenance of the filtration system and the engine power supply system leads to the gradual spread of corrosion. Excessive narrowing or widening of the gap will cause the saw to malfunction.
Spark test
To check the spark, follow a few simple steps:
- The tip of the high-voltage wire is removed.
- The candle is unscrewed.
- The tip is put on in its original place.
- The candle leans against the cylinder by means of a skirt.
- The starter starts the unit.
Spark plugs from different manufacturers require different distances between the electrodes. For certain models, a distance of 0.5 millimeters is the norm. For other chainsaws this figure is 0.02
Before conducting an inspection, it is important to understand the specifications of a particular tool.
Excess of gasoline
Filling the spark plug channel with gasoline is another common cause of chainsaw malfunction. The owner of the tool can cope with this problem on his own.
To prevent damage, the following manipulations are performed:
- The spark plug is unscrewed using a specialized wrench.
- The candle is wiped with a sterile and dry cloth.
- The part is thoroughly dried for half an hour.
- Carbon deposits are removed from the electrodes using a needle file.
- The distance between electrical conductors is adjusted.
- The remaining fuel fluid is drained from the spark plug channels.
- The saw is reassembled and started again.
If the problem was an excess of fuel, then the listed procedure will return the cutting tool to “life”.
It happens that the saw stalls due to improper operation of the ignition unit. This part cannot be repaired, regardless of whether it is performed by an amateur or a specialist. The only method to combat this factor is to replace the block.

Tools and equipment used in the enterprise become unusable over time.
If they cannot be restored and cannot be used in the future, they must be excluded from the organization’s property by writing off. This operation must be properly documented. The write-off of a tool that has become unusable takes place in a strictly established manner and must be documented in an act (clause 56 of the Guidelines for accounting for special tools, approved by Order of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation dated December 26, 2002 No. 135n). This document confirms the fact of write-off and reflects the main reasons for its publication. A well-drafted act will ensure the reliability of accounting, and regular write-off of worn-out instruments will reduce the tax burden on the organization.
Checking the fuel supply system
In the previous section, one of the reasons for the lack of fuel supply to the cylinder was already mentioned - contamination of the fuel filter. It is checked by the intensity of the stream from the fuel hose; if it is weak, the filter needs to be cleaned, and in case of severe wear, it needs to be completely replaced. Preventive replacement is recommended once every three months.
Poor fuel flow may indicate a clogged tank cap breather. Cleaning is done with an awl.
Another sign of a problem is the absence or poor supply of the fuel mixture. This is due to several possible reasons:
- air filter contamination (washing and subsequent drying);
- problems with the carburetor - one of the options is possible: settings failure, damaged membrane, clogged channels.
The ability of ordinary people to regulate the carburetor is reduced to a minimum - idle speed adjustment. But even the correct setting of the latter will significantly increase the power of your chainsaw. Plus, incorrect factory settings are possible, evidence of the latter is:
- increased vibration and damaged protective cap;
- harmony of the cylinder-piston group;
- carburetor clogging;
- inability to start and instant stop after start;
- a drop in productivity with increasing consumption of the combustible mixture.
The adjustment takes place in two phases: basic, with the engine turned off, and final, with the engine running, preheated. Adjustment is made using adjusting screws; for basic adjustment, screws “L” and “H” are used, the third one, “T”, is not touched for now. We wrap them all the way, and then 1.5 turns in the opposite direction. During final adjustment, turn the “T” screw counterclockwise to achieve minimum speed. The engine must run stably and the chain must remain in place. If after adjustment the engine stalls, you need to return the screw to its original position, the chain continues to move - then unscrew the screw. We test debugging using:
- acceleration - speed should be gained quickly;
- maximum number of revolutions - in case of ignition interruptions, loosen screw “H”;
- operation in idle mode - the chain should not move, the speed should be increased as quickly as possible.
Additionally, use the instructions to properly debug the carburetor mechanism.
An example of drawing up an act for writing off fuel and lubricants
- At the beginning of the act, on the right or left (it doesn’t matter), a place is allocated for approval by the head of the company, the name of the enterprise and the date of drawing up the act are indicated.
- Next, in the middle, enter the name of the document and briefly indicate its meaning (in this case, it is “write-off of fuel and lubricants”).
- After this, the composition of the commission is entered into the act, indicating the positions of the employees, as well as their personal data.
- The next thing to note is the period for which fuels and lubricants are written off, as well as the make and state number of a particular vehicle.
- Below is the table. They fit into it
- fuels and lubricants subject to write-off,
- their quantity (in liters),
- the norm of their consumption approved at the enterprise,
- actual consumption,
- price.
In those lines that remain blank, you need to put dashes.
- Under the table, the direction of expenditure should be noted: in this case, these are “the needs of the organization,” as well as the documents attached to the act (the waybills are listed here in chronological order by number).
- At the end, the act should be certified by the signatures of all members of the commission with transcripts of autographs.
Checking the spark plugs
The first step is to check the spark plugs. You need to disconnect the wire that goes to the latter and unscrew it with a special key. Based on the condition of the spark plug, you can determine possible problems:
- a dry spark plug indicates that there is no access of the incendiary mixture to the cylinder; the ignition system has nothing to do with it. The cause of the breakdown may be a clogged conductive tube or a problem with the carburetor. It is necessary to clean the fuel line and check the functionality of the fuel pump and carburetor. If one of the mechanisms does not work, it is necessary to replace it with a new one, since repairing the latter is impossible in the absence of professional skills;
- A wet spark plug indicates an excess of fuel mixture in the cylinder or water getting into it. It is necessary to dry the spark plug, remove any remaining liquid and blow out the cylinder chamber - with the fuel supply turned off, start the starter. Then you should put the spark plug on and start it again. When checking, you need to measure the gap between the electrodes; an indicator from 0.5 to 0.65 mm is considered acceptable. In case of damage or signs of abrasion, the gasket must be replaced. If after the above operations the spark is good, there may be a problem with the quality of gasoline. Absence or unevenness is an ignition problem. There is a possibility of damage to the supply wire or spark plug. If the new spark plug does not respond, it is necessary to inspect the starting system in more detail;
- a spark plug with a black coating of soot is evidence of the possible use of low-quality lubricant, an imbalance in the “gasoline-oil” balance in favor of the latter, or a clogged one of the filters. Clogging leads to a loss of power of the chainsaw and its subsequent stoppage. The dust does not burn completely and settles on the cylinder walls as a layer of black soot. You need to change the fuel, clean the fuel filter, wash and dry the air filter. Remove soot from the candle using an awl or needle, and clean the contacts with medium-sized sandpaper.
Instrument write-off act - what kind of document is it?
The act of writing off a tool that has become unusable is an important document, without which it is impossible to carry out further disposal. It must contain information about the inventory items being written off, the reason for the write-off, the quantity and value of the items being written off.
The act is always drawn up only in the presence of a special commission, otherwise it will not have legal force. The reason for refusal to use tools may be their breakdown, obsolescence, damage or destruction, including as a result of a fire or other natural disaster. An important point: tools can be written off only after they are returned to the storeroom as scrap. Deregistered inventory items cannot be used to solve production problems.
Why does the spark plug on a chainsaw flood?
In most cases, the cause of a flooded spark plug is a breakdown or clogging of the carburetor. To disassemble, inspect and wash it, the fuel assembly will need to be removed.
To do this you need:
- Unscrew the 3 metal screws and remove the protective plastic cover;
- Carefully remove the upper foam part of the air filter. In this case, you need to inspect the filter element and make sure that there is no need to wash or replace it;
- Remove the fuel hose, being careful not to tear or bend it;
- Remove the drive rod;
- Carefully disconnect the gas supply pipe and the end of the standard cable.
After disassembling the carburetor, you will need to inspect its membrane. It should be intact and elastic. If the surface of the membrane has become rough, then most likely this is what caused the candle to flood.
Other faulty carburetor elements also need to be replaced, and the remaining old parts should be washed in clean gasoline. After the spare parts have completely dried, you need to assemble the fuel unit and install it on the chainsaw in the reverse order.
Chainsaw muffler failures
Difficult starting or interruptions in the operation of the chainsaw can cause a clogged exhaust system. Exhaust gases come out of the muffler, and if this hole becomes clogged, the tool begins to work poorly and intermittently.
Muffler cleaning and repair
A malfunction can be determined not only by the sound of the engine, but also visually. The muffler becomes clogged with shavings and sawdust, as well as carbon deposits. To carry out high-quality cleaning, you will need to disassemble the muffler and wash it in special liquids.
Why does the Shtil chainsaw not start when it's hot? Why does a chainsaw have trouble starting?
Main reasons:
- fuel and air filters;
- reduced compression;
- carburetor adjustment;
- spark plug;
- ignition coil;
- gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel;
Let's look at each reason in more detail.
Fuel and air filter
Contamination of the main filter elements of a chainsaw negatively affects its operation.
For example, a dirty air filter will not provide enough air to the carburetor, which will affect the quality of the air-fuel mixture and normal engine starting. A dirty fuel filter will make it difficult or even cut off the flow of gasoline to the carburetor and make it impossible for the engine to operate.
Reduced compression
One of the common cases of difficult starting of a chainsaw is wear of the CPG (cylinder-piston group).
As you know, for a chainsaw to start normally, compression must be present in its engine. It is necessary for normal compression of the fuel mixture in the engine cylinder, and it also affects the operation of the fuel pump.
During the operation of the tool, the compression value drops and the chainsaw begins to have difficulty starting.
The reasons for the lack of compression or its decrease may be natural, because The engine wears out during operation. Problems can also be caused by a serious breakdown, for example, a scuffed CPG, or a broken piston ring.
A sign of low compression is weak starter resistance when starting. With reduced compression, a decrease in the power of the chainsaw is observed, which negatively affects its performance. The problem is eliminated by replacing the piston rings, or the entire CPG.
Carburetor adjustment
Incorrect carburetor adjustment will cause the chainsaw to not develop full power. It will be difficult to start, or not start at all. Carburetor settings directly affect the quality of the air-fuel mixture, which is necessary for normal starting and further operation of the engine.
If the carburetor is incorrectly adjusted, there will be more or less gasoline in the fuel-air mixture than required, and the mixture will not ignite even with normal sparking.
Excess gasoline in the mixture is usually called overflow. A characteristic sign of overflow is a wet spark plug, after several unsuccessful attempts to start the chainsaw.
Spark plug
The spark plug is one of the main elements of the ignition system. A spark is formed at its electrodes, and if this element fails, starting will be difficult or not possible at all.
The spark plug may fail completely, or work intermittently or produce a weak spark. Checking the spark plug is quite simple; to do this, you need to unscrew it from the engine, attach it to the cap of the high-voltage wire and, placing it on the cylinder, pull the starter. If the spark plug is in order, the spark will be powerful with a bluish tint. A weak spark with a reddish tint is a sign of a problem. A defective spark plug needs to be replaced.
Ignition coil
The reason that a new chainsaw does not start, or starts poorly, may be the ignition coil. Modern chainsaws are equipped with electronic ignition coils. This part cannot be repaired, and, as a rule, if there is a defect, it is completely replaced.
Gap between ignition coil and flywheel
An incorrectly set gap between the flywheel and the ignition coil contacts affects the quality of spark formation, which in turn is responsible for normal starting and stable operation of the engine.
Engine
In most cases, the following problems occur in engine operation:
- the engine stopped starting;
- the engine starts, but after a while it stalls;
- the engine is not able to develop the required power;
- The engine is extremely unstable.
How to check crankshaft seals
The presence of oil seal leaks can only be checked by getting to the crankshaft itself and carefully examining it for leaks. You can see how to do this correctly in the video:
How to check compression on a chainsaw
At a compression level below 8 atmospheres, the engine will not have enough power, which means the chainsaw will not be able to fully function.
To measure compression you need:
- Remove the protective cover and unscrew the spark plug.
- Insert the tip of the compression gauge into the hole where the spark plug should be located.
- Using the starting cord, rotate the piston and remember the maximum readings of the measuring device.
How to properly install a piston on a chainsaw
The work of replacing the piston for most models of modern chainsaws is carried out according to the following algorithm:
- The top and side covers are removed.
- The candle is unscrewed.
- The stoppers are removed from the shock absorbers and the handle is disconnected from the body.
- The drive sprocket and starter are removed.
- A piston stopper is installed in the spark plug hole and the nut securing the flywheel and clutch is unscrewed.
- The flywheel, clutch, and worm drive of the oil pump, located immediately behind the clutch mechanism, are removed.
- The screws securing the carburetor and air filter are unscrewed, after which these components are removed along with the engine control lever.
- The ignition coil is removed, as well as the muffler.
- The saw is turned upside down and, by unscrewing the screws securing it to the body, the engine is disconnected.
- The pan is unscrewed and the piston is removed.
- Since the piston is removed only together with the crankshaft, to disconnect it it is necessary to remove the retaining rings.
- The old piston is replaced with a new one, but as carefully as possible. This is caused by the high fragility of compression rings.
- The crankcase is put in place, and sealant is used instead of a gasket.
All subsequent actions are carried out according to the reverse algorithm of disassembly.
Calibration algorithm and safety precautions when troubleshooting a chainsaw carburetor
Carburetor adjustment is performed in two stages:
- Basic (carried out with the engine off).
- Finish (carried out with the engine running, preheated).
The final calibration is performed by turning out the idle screw until the minimum engine speed is reached (its operation must be stable and the chain must be motionless). If the engine stops idling, the screw must be returned back, and if the saw chain still moves, you should continue turning it counterclockwise.
Calibration check is performed by test:
- Acceleration (when you gently press the accelerator, the engine should quickly gain speed to its maximum).
- Maximum speed (if there are misfires, screw H should be loosened slightly).
- Idling (the chain should not move, and the engine should pick up speed as quickly as possible).
DIY chainsaw repair
The saw handles are connected to the engine by means of a damper (rubber gasket or steel spring). The sawing part of the chain consists of a cutting chain located along the edges of the bar, sprocket and sprocket.
Unfortunately, chainsaws, just like other equipment, can fail.
Having at least a little idea of how a saw works, you can fix most problems with your own hands. The difficulty of repair lies not so much in the work itself, but in correctly determining the cause of the breakdown. For example, if the saw does not start, there may be several reasons for this, so you should not immediately start disassembling it. First, analyze the causes of the breakdown, which are divided into 2 groups: Problems with engine components, ignition systems, fuel supply or exhaust.
This also includes malfunctions of the cylinder - piston group. Problems
Chainsaw design features
- This chainsaw is equipped with a gasoline engine with a power of one thousand three hundred watts. A distinctive feature of the device is the ease of starting the device, carried out using an electronic ignition system and a uniquely designed fuel pump.
- The manufacturer prudently installed a protective system in the chainsaw that stops the rotation of the chain using an inertial brake in the event of emergency situations. In addition, the unit is equipped with a device that lubricates the chainsaw chain automatically, without the owner’s effort.
- The fuel primer makes it easy to start the product both in the warm and cold seasons of the year. The impeller on the starter makes it possible to easily clean the drum from dust and dirt.
- The developers of the chainsaw made sure that the engine serves you for a long time without breakdowns, so they equipped it with a filter equipped with a CCS system, with which you can prevent the absolute majority of residual particles from the surrounding air from entering the engine. Thanks to this, owners of the unit can save fuel due to the low fuel consumption of the device.
- Chromium is applied to the walls of the chainsaw cylinders, which allows you to increase the period during which the tool will reliably serve you.
Why do you need a break-in?
Initially, the idea underlying the need for this process seems logical and correct: it is needed so that the surfaces of parts moving relative to each other get used to each other. As a result:
- Power increases;
- Improved lubrication capabilities of parts;
- Reduced wear;
- Noise is reduced;
- Heating is reduced and, as a result, the risk of losing the strength properties of the surface and the geometry of the structure is reduced.
Indeed, if you take a tour of a typical machine-building enterprise, you can see that the technological processes for manufacturing, say, pistons and cylinders, are not so perfect. There are always rough edges that just need to be smoothed out. But the trouble is that at this moment a lot of advisers appear who begin to advise who knows what.
Instructions for disassembling and assembling magneto
To repair the magneto, it must be dismantled and disassembled; to do this, follow these steps:
- First, the device is removed from the power unit.
- The assembly must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, as well as traces of motor fluid, if any. The magneto will be dirty, so it needs to be cleaned. Do not allow dirt to get on the internal elements when disassembling the device.
- The next stage will be analysis. Using a socket wrench, you need to unscrew the nut that secures the ignition timing device. Dismantle this element, and then remove the key from the groove.
- Then move the latch slightly to the side, after which you can remove the cover of the interrupter assembly. To remove it, you need to unscrew four more bolts that secure it.
- Once the cover is removed, the rotor can be removed from the housing itself.
- The final step will be to unscrew the pins that secure the transformer assembly. Having done this, the transformer can be removed from the housing. Thus, you have access to the constituent elements of the magneto. Now the mechanism is being repaired with the replacement of all failed components. For further assembly and installation of the magneto, all the steps described above will need to be repeated in reverse order.
Carburetor adjustment
In many ways, the service life of the structure depends on the quality of the assembly. Quite often there are problems with Chinese chainsaws associated with wear of the main elements. The low cost of the proposal is due to the use of low-quality materials.
There are several main signs that indicate that the carburetor needs to be adjusted:
- Strong vibrations occur during work.
- The CPG is worn out.
- There are signs of mechanical damage to the protective cap.
- The engine shuts down on its own or is almost impossible to start.
- Fuel consumption and the amount of exhaust gases increase for no reason.
- A sharp drop in power indicator.
Recommendations for adjusting the element in question are provided by the device manufacturer. As a rule, adjusting screws are placed in the protective cap, which allow you to adjust the operation of the chainsaw.
Often problems with operation arise due to changes in the settings of the fuel supply system. Safety precautions when troubleshooting carburetor problems include the absence of fuel. The entire procedure can be divided into two main stages:
- Base.
- Finishing.
To begin with, the position of the screws H and L is changed until they stop, after which they are turned back 1.5 turns. The final stage involves warming up the internal combustion engine for 10 minutes, since some characteristics change when heated. The adjustment is carried out using a special screw, which is set to a position to reduce the speed. The chain must be stationary.
How to check a chainsaw magneto
The magneto, spool, module is the ignition coil. It may have absolutely nothing to do with tool failures, and the reason may be hidden only in a gap or something else. But in some cases it is precisely this that becomes a factor in the violation.
To check the woman itself, you should, as in the case described above, use the method of excluding components from the chain. Or in other words:
- visually assess the condition of the bobbin body for cracks and other visible defects;
- check the cleanliness of current communications of various components and elements;
- diagnose the insulation and serviceability of armored wiring, reliability of fastenings, absence of rust, etc.;
- visually assess the condition of the spark device cap;
- checking the serviceability of the spark plug;
- diagnostics of the circuit breaker, which is especially important for Chinese-made chainsaws.
Again, as in the case described above, certain items are excluded from this chain, thereby identifying the cause of the problem.
The woman herself is examined in this way.
- The resistance of the magneto is measured. However, this option is not always applicable, since you first need to know the resistance parameters. In addition, to form the required explosive pulse, it is necessary to separate the indicators of various semiconductor elements. A sign of a problem, as a rule, is the ringing of the circuit through the explosive wire and the negative wire. It should show either an “open circuit” or high resistance.
- The check can be done this way - use a device that checks for the presence of a spark. It is installed in the open circuit between the BB wire and the spark plugs. The disadvantage of this method is that the device is very expensive and is mostly used in serious repair services.
- The “old-fashioned” method of testing, which will allow you to save on an expensive device. Use at your own risk when there are no other options. The method of checking is to remove the cap from the candle and insert a nail into it. The candle is reinserted. The nail should be located at a distance of 6-7 mm from the cylinder. The chainsaw starts. The spark is examined: it should be bright blue, if not, then this is a sign of a problem with the woman.
The “old-fashioned” method of checking a woman has many disadvantages. First of all, this concerns electrical components in the system, which can easily deteriorate. The distance between the cylinder and the nail may vary depending on different models of the tool.
As for setting up the magneto, it comes down to examining the groove on the flywheel. The OZ of most current saw models does not need to be adjusted. But its exposure can only be determined by the angle between the mark after the groove on the flywheel and the magnets installed, again, on the flywheel.
Correctly and accurately setting the gap between the magneto and the flywheel is what is most important.
You should know that the head on chainsaw systems is installed in the fan fuselage near the flywheel. The coil, in contact with the magnetic field of the flywheel, produces energy for the spark.
Replacing the coil itself will be much more difficult, since the installation location is too inconvenient. The installation of the new reel should be carried out so that the base of the reel is at a distance of 1-1.5 mm above the flywheel magnets.
In some cases, it is recommended to also check the crankshaft bearing for play.
- Absolutely legal (Article 12.2);
- Hides from photo and video recording;
- Suitable for all cars;
- Works through the cigarette lighter connector;
- Does not cause interference to radios and cell phones.
Starter device
Often, chainsaw manufacturers equip their units with starters that work on almost the same principle, namely: in a groove in the saw body there is a handle through which the cord is passed. When the handle is suddenly lifted, the cord is also pulled out, which engages the ratchet drum. Thus, a drum with spokes, which is located on the shaft, is activated. At this time, the crankshaft makes several revolutions, leading to compression of the fuel mixture, which at this moment is between the cylinder head and the piston. When the handle is lowered, on the contrary, the ratchet and the pins lose their contact, which leads to the shaft stopping.
As the power of the chainsaw increases, the amount of fuel mixture increases, which must ignite when the chainsaw is started. In this case, to start the engine, it is necessary to increase the number of pulls on the starter cord. To speed up the return of the drum mechanism, manufacturers use a special steel starter return spring, which has excellent elasticity.
If the spring breaks, you must: remove the mechanism cage, pull out the spring, fixing its upper part with your finger and slightly pulling the starter handle to the side
Then, wind the new part, while avoiding kinks and twisting of the new spring element, then carefully fix the clip
