Amateur and professional chainsaws are complex devices. The motor life of their two-stroke engines, components and assemblies has its limitations. For this reason, quite reliable and expensive tools, along with cheap Chinese units, periodically fail and refuse to start. The situation when a chainsaw does not start or stalls is not very pleasant and sometimes confuses the user. How to identify and eliminate the malfunction, restoring the functionality of the tool.
Identifying and eliminating obvious chainsaw faults.
To determine the reason why the chainsaw does not start or stalls when starting, it is necessary to troubleshoot the tool. The essence of the procedure is a sequential inspection of the condition and operation of the main working elements of the saw engine. At this stage we check:
- Presence of a spark on the spark plug;
- Fuel supply;
- Filter status;
- Operation of the breather built into the fuel cap of the stalling unit;
- Functioning of the exhaust channel.
Checking the spark on the spark plug and eliminating the causes.
The first step in finding the reasons why a gasoline saw does not start is to check the spark on the spark plug. There are many factors that influence the operation of this element. However, the main ones at the initial stage of tool troubleshooting are:
- Incorrect carburetor adjustment;
- The presence of more than the required amount of oil in gasoline;
- Air filter clogged.
All of them contribute to the formation of carbon deposits on the spark plug electrodes. In 50 cases out of 100, saws do not start when cold due to the lack of a spark due to carbon deposits on the electrodes and their corrosion. The result is either a decrease in the gap or an increase in it.
Checking the spark plug of a non-working chainsaw
Checking for spark is quite simple. To do this you will need:
- Remove the tip of the high-voltage wire;
- Unscrew the spark plug;
- Put the tip back on;
- Place the candle skirt against the cylinder;
- Start with the starter.
If at the moment the chainsaw engine starts, a good spark is observed between the electrodes, then everything is in order with the ignition unit. If it is not there, then it is worth cleaning the element itself and checking the electrode gap. If necessary, use a special probe to adjust the distance between the contacts.
For spark plugs from different manufacturers, the distance between the electrodes may vary. For some it may be equal to 0.5 mm. Others have 0.2 mm. Therefore, carefully study the manufacturer's recommendations.
There may be no spark at the spark plug for other reasons. The main malfunctions that affect poor starting of the chainsaw and unstable operation of the internal combustion engine at idle, which can cause the tool to stall, include the following:
- Overfilling of the spark plug channel with fuel;
- Lack of contact between the high-voltage cradle and the tip of the spark plug;
- Failure of the ignition unit.
How to start a cold chainsaw if the spark plug channel is constantly flooded with gasoline? You can fix the problem while starting the tool using the following algorithm:
- Unscrew the spark plug with a special wrench;
- Wipe it with a clean and dry cloth;
- Dry for 20...30 minutes;
- Remove carbon deposits with a file and adjust the gap between the electrodes;
- Drain the remaining fuel from the spark plug channel and dry it;
- Collect everything and try to start the mechanism.
As a rule, these measures are quite enough to start the chainsaw and get the job done. However, this extreme measure does not eliminate the main reason why the engine does not start or stalls - improper operation of the carburetor, which needs fine adjustment.
If there is no spark due to poor contact of the high-voltage cradle with the tip of the spark plug, it is necessary to check the connection. The test can be carried out using a regular tester. If a defect is detected and corrected, the chainsaw should start without any problems.
If the check shows that the contact is reliable, but the saw still does not start, look for the reason in the ignition unit. As a rule, a faulty unit cannot be repaired or restored. This will require a complete replacement.
We determine the availability of fuel and its supply.
First, you need to make sure that there is a fuel mixture in the tank of the chainsaw that does not want to start, and that it is properly supplied to the carburetor. With a full tank, check how the mixture is supplied through the gas line. We disconnect the fuel system pipe from the carburetor and try to pump it up. In case of complete order, when pumping, gasoline will be supplied jerkily in accordance with the standards set by the manufacturer. Weak fuel supply or its absence can result from:
- The fuel supply channel is clogged;
- Fuel filter clogged with debris.
Often the cause of poor starting of a chainsaw can be a too full tank. In this case, you should pay attention to the presence of smudges under the saw housing cover. If they are present, then look at the connection of the gasoline supply pipe to the carburetor. Most often, it is squeezed out by pressure when screwing on the tank cap, which is tucked right under the neck, which prevents the engine from starting.
The quality of the fuel mixture can also be one of the reasons why the chainsaw does not start. If, after completing the work, you do not drain the remaining gasoline and leave the tool for long-term storage (more than 2 weeks), then the processes of resin formation and polymerization of the components will begin to occur inside the tank. What can cause carbon deposits to appear on the piston, rings and cylinder liner. Therefore, always prepare the mixture in only the required quantity before work.
Checking the condition of the fuel and air filters.
If the fuel quality is fine, the chainsaw engine may not start due to clogged fuel and air filters. To diagnose these elements, you will need to perform a number of manipulations associated with their dismantling.
For fuel filter:
- Disconnect the gasoline supply line from the carburetor;
- Pump up the fuel.
If there is little or no pressure in the pipe, disconnect the filter. Before doing this, empty the tank of the mixture and remove the filter element itself. Dismantling is done using a wire hook. A clogged replacement cartridge that causes poor starting of the chainsaw engine can be cleaned, but it is best to replace it with a new one. When using the tool in dusty conditions, cleaning should be done on a regular basis.
A clogged air filter can cause the chainsaw engine to run rough, causing it to stall or be difficult to start. Dust and dirt deposited on the adsorbent material make it difficult for air to enter the system, making the fuel mixture so rich that it will sometimes be difficult to start the tool.
Checking the air filter is one of the first steps in finding the causes of poor starting.
Removing the air filter should be done with caution, since dust accumulated on its surface during operation of the saw can get into the carburetor. And this is fraught with more expensive repairs. After disconnecting the cartridge, thoroughly clean it of accumulated dirt and wash it with detergent. Dry the element and carefully put it back in place.
Checking the breather and cleaning it.
The breather is another element, due to improper operation of which the chainsaw may not start or stall during the sawing process. This element is located on the fuel tank cap in the area of the air hole. This is a kind of valve that does not allow gasoline to leak out and equalizes the air pressure necessary for the free flow of fuel into the carburetor.
Is there fuel in the tank and what is its quality?
Checking the presence of fuel in the tank is the first place to start diagnosing. Even if there is visually still fuel in the tank, make sure that the fuel line is lowered into it. If the fuel in the tank is low, then this is the main reason why it is impossible to start the engine. After adding fuel to the tank, it is necessary to bleed the system, and only after that carry out a test run of the engine.
If there is enough fuel in the tank, make sure that the supply hose inside the tank is not disconnected. On some models of chainsaws, such a malfunction is a “disease”. If the tank is full, this does not mean that the breakdown is not related to the fuel system. Check the quality of the fuel (oil and gasoline). Gasoline for chainsaws is mainly used of the AI-92 grade. As an oil, you need to use only a special two-stroke oil, but not motor oil or even waste oil.
The prepared fuel mixture cannot be stored for more than 2 weeks, as the mixture begins to lose its properties, which negatively affects not only the operation of the engine, but also its starting. How does a poor-quality mixture affect engine starting, you ask? Everything is very simple, when the mixture is stored for a long time, oil precipitates, which leads to clogging of the carburetor channels and jets.
The instructions for each brand of chainsaw indicate recommendations on the ratio of gasoline to oil. This is the recommendation that should be followed when preparing a mixture for a two-stroke chainsaw engine, otherwise it will significantly shorten the service life of your tool.
This is interesting!
You can tell the quality of the fuel by the color of the carbon deposits on the spark plugs.
What to do if the chainsaw continues to not start?
If the initial inspection did not yield anything or the defects were eliminated during the search process, but the chainsaw still does not start, then you need to look for more serious reasons. It is best to identify and repair such breakdowns at a service center. However, if you have experience, you can find and eliminate them yourself. What to diagnose and check?
- Compression in the cylinder;
- Compression in the crankcase;
- Carburetor operation.
In the first case, checking the compression in the cylinder will allow you to find out the condition of the cylinder-piston group (CPG) of a chainsaw that does not want to start when cold. To do this you need a compression gauge. The device is screwed into place of the spark plug and the engine is started idle. Measuring the readings allows you to judge the condition of the CPG. In the absence of a compression gauge, you can determine the compression in the cylinder offhand as follows:
- Place your finger on the spark plug hole;
- Try to start the chainsaw engine.
By placing your finger on the spark plug hole and pulling the starter, you can check the compression in the cylinder
If you feel that your finger is being pulled strongly into the spark plug channel, then everything is in order with compression. The absence of vacuum in the chamber indicates a malfunction. The cylinder-piston group needs a more detailed inspection, which will give an idea of the condition of the piston and cylinder, piston rings and bearings.
A chainsaw may not start when cold due to a lack of compression in the engine crankcase. The main reason for this is damage to the gasket located between the cylinder and the crankcase. It is quite easy to detect a lack of compression:
- Disconnect the upper tube from the carburetor;
- Pour gasoline into a regular cork;
- We immerse the removed tube in the fuel;
- We pull the starter several times.
If fuel is sucked out of the cap when the chainsaw starter starts, then everything is fine with compression. If not, look at the gasket.
If the fuel is drawn in, then everything is fine - the gasket is intact. Otherwise, you will have to purchase a repair kit and make a replacement. How to do this, watch the video why a Chinese chainsaw won’t start:
Starting the tool may be complicated by improper operation of the carburetor or its breakdown. It often happens that during the sawing process the fastening screws become loose and air is sucked into the cylinder. Check that the carburetor is securely fastened. Inspect it for fuel leaks. There can be many reasons for the malfunction. It is possible to accurately determine the malfunction, eliminate it and fine-tune the carburetor only at a service center.
After going through a step-by-step troubleshooting of the chainsaw engine, you will be able to find the malfunction, fix it yourself and successfully start your working tool. Do not take on types of work that you are not confident in. Entrust troubleshooting and troubleshooting to specialists from the service center.

Ignition system
If the tool suddenly stops working, check the ignition system first. And you have to start with a candle.
You must do your work very carefully. A special hook is used for this.
First, unplug the cable and remove the plug.
If it is dry, then there is no fuel in the cylinder.
In this way, the combustion chamber is ventilated and excess fuel is removed. Then the spark plug is inserted and the chainsaw is started.
If there is soot on the spark plugs, then the Huskvarna 137 chainsaw runs on low-grade fuel. Incorrect fuel to oil ratio also leads to scale formation. In order for the tool to last as long as possible, you must carefully read the operating instructions.
If there is soot on the candle, it must be carefully removed. You can use a stick for this. The electrodes are gently rubbed against the skin. It will then be installed on site. It is also necessary to refuel, which is recommended for this model of chainsaw.
How the mechanism works
All instruments, not foreign ones ( Husqvarna
, Makita, Shtil, Partner 350), not Chinese chainsaws, not domestic ones (Druzhba, Ural), are designed the same. Therefore, it is very easy to find the reason why the device does not start or stall.
Of course there are four elements where problems occur:
- The fuel for which the carburetor is responsible;
- Lubrication;
- The air that enters through the air filter;
- The quality of the spark required depends on the ignition unit.
They depend on each other and do not interact with each other. If any element does not work correctly, the saw stops working.
The first question is that our client has to start the tools differently - hot and cold. Two commonly used mechanisms are responsible for the myth process.
Be sure to look at what is written in the user manual. It states that when turning it on, you need to make sure that the emergency stop brake is engaged. However, starting a saw with a brake is much more difficult, so it is better not to turn on the brake.
You can find out from the instructions that inside the body there is a fuel tank and an engine, and outside there is a saw part (bar with chain), a handle and a starter.
First you need to figure out exactly how the tool won’t start. Nettle, the saw starts up, alas, it immediately stalls, or loses power and cutting quality.
Carrying out diagnostics
The situation when a malfunction makes itself felt and the saw stops working often puts the owner in a difficult situation. In an amicable way, the unit should be sent for repair to find out exactly why it won’t start, and then entrust the repair to professionals. However, not all breakdowns are fatal, and even a person who is far from technology can cope with them.
The first thing you need to do is diagnose the device. It consists of a careful inspection of the main parts of the saw, namely:
- Checking the fuel supply system;
- Filtration system status;
- Presence of a spark at the spark plug.
Chainsaw won't start when hot
Does not start

hot
.
If you see black carbon deposits or a lot of fuel, then the carburetor may not be properly regulating the fuel supply.
If your saw tool starts, but immediately stalls, then the problem needs to be looked for in the carburetor jet or fuel filter. Perhaps they are clogged.
To check if the breather is damaged, you need to disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and see if the fuel mixture leaks out of it.
Problems with the fuel supply system
If the tool does not work, this may be due to the fact that fuel is not entering the cylinder. First of all, you need to check the fuel filter for contamination levels. To check this, you need to remove the fuel hose and check how fast the fuel flows.
If it is supplied under low pressure, then the problem lies in the filter.
In this case, you need to clean the filter. It is taken directly through the tank. The filter is cleaned and installed back. It is washed under running clean water.
After this, the filter is dried and carefully installed back. To prevent this problem from occurring in the future, it is necessary to periodically clean the filter.
If cleaning the filter does not give a positive result, then you should pay attention to the breather. A clogged hole in this hole causes insufficient air to enter the carburetor.
Expert advice: when troubleshooting such faults, you must use the instructions, this will prevent more serious breakdowns from occurring.
Restoring the operation of the tool
To restore the operation of the saw, no matter the Ural or Shtil brand, you need to know the location of the breakdown.
First, we check and change the unsuitable fuel mixture. If the saw still does not start, then we check further point by point.
The problem is in the candle - we pull it out and dry it. Under no circumstances should you pierce it, as this will lead to a malfunction of the part. Thirty minutes after drying, you can insert the spark plug back, first checking to see if there is any fuel left in its place.
In addition, the spark plug may simply break, so it is better to have a spare one to rule out the cause.
Operational Features
When operating the Husqvarna 142 chainsaw, you need to take into account its features. This is a simplified semi-professional model, not intended for everyday long-term use. The main area of application of the Husqvarna chainsaw is gardening and housing and communal services - pruning large branches, felling dried trees, etc.
The device of the Husqvarna 142 chainsaw
Powerplant - two-stroke carburetor engine with a displacement of 40 cm3
3
and a power of 2.58 liters. s., air-cooled. It runs on a gasoline-oil mixture in a gasoline to oil ratio of 50:1.
During operation, Husqvarna branded oil is required, but if this is not available, the manufacturer allows the use of any high-quality engine oil, but in a different ratio - 33:1.
The Husqvarna chainsaw has a minimum of controls - there is only a switch, a choke position lever and a combined throttle control lever. This model does not have a primer, i.e. a fuel suction button, which makes starting difficult, but makes troubleshooting easier.
Performance qualities allow you to saw dry and wet wood of various species, including hard ones such as oak and beech. In general, the Husqvarna 142 chainsaw is characterized by high build quality, unpretentiousness and reliability. Malfunctions occur rarely and are mainly associated with incorrect carburetor adjustment or failure of consumables.
Advantages of Husqvarna chainsaws
Separately about the breakdown of the most common model
Let's look at the problems of Calm one hundred and eighty in more detail:
- Clogged carburetor or fuel filter. These are the most common problems that can be easily resolved after cleaning. Sometimes the filter has to be changed;
- Replacing the spark plug;
- Sometimes the cylinder or seals need to be replaced.
The Shtil saw is quite strong and durable, so you can often fix a breakdown yourself. In fact, the same applies to the Partner, Ural, Makita and Husqvarna
.
When we discover a malfunction in our chainsaw, we look for the cause in small ways, gradually checking and eliminating the problems. Such problems are easy to fix yourself. But if the breakdown is serious, and you do not have enough experience, then this should be done by a specialist.
Why does a chainsaw stall under load or at high speeds?
There are times when the device starts up well, but when the load increases or the speed increases, it starts shooting, sneezing and stalls. There are several reasons why a device may stall under load. The most basic ones are the following:
- The chain is dull;
- Not enough power;
- The carburetor is not adjusted;
- Possible air leaks;
- The air filter is clogged;
- The gap between the spark plug and the cap is broken.

The most popular and frequently used chainsaw models by Russian users are the Ural, Husqvarna, Shtil 180 and Partner.
Although they have their own characteristics, they are generally similar, so we will describe possible causes of breakdowns and ways to eliminate them in general for all tools.
Owner reviews
Makar:
The gap is very important and affects the operation of the saw. It stalled for me, I sneezed when starting and I couldn’t do anything. I was lying around doing nothing until I read about the importance of the gap. If you don't cut correctly, you add problems to yourself.
Andrey:
There was this problem: the chainsaw started well, but when adding gas it started sneezing and stalled. I checked the fuel and air filters, everything is fine. It turned out to be a problem with the carburetor. This was discovered during diagnostics. So I took it to the service center so as not to have to worry about it myself. The guys fixed everything - the sneezing and stalling stopped.

Saw device - determine the location of the problem
All chainsaws are designed more or less the same. This applies to both foreign-made devices (Husqvarna 142, Makita, Shtil 180, Partner 350) and Russian (Ural, Druzhba).
Therefore, you can easily find the answer to your question of why the chainsaw won’t start or why it stalls.
Below you can see a photo of the Partner 350 chainsaw.
Most often, problems in chainsaws arise with the following elements: fuel, lubricants, air, spark.
During operation, these elements interact, and if one of them is broken, this may be the reason why the chainsaw does not start.
All these 4 elements are located in different areas of the car: the carburetor is responsible for the air-fuel mixture, lubricant is obtained by adding gasoline, the air enters a special air filter, and the quality of the spark depends on the ignition unit.
It’s worth starting with the fact that all chainsaws start differently - hot and cold. At the moment, there are 2 most commonly used mechanisms that are responsible for this process.
First of all, let's look at the instructions. It often says that when you turn on the chainsaw, it must have the emergency stop brake engaged.
This is suggested to be done for safety, so that you do not injure yourself with the tool. However, starting the chainsaw in this position is much more difficult, so it is best not to lock the brake.
The likelihood that you will harm yourself is minimal, even if you have little or no experience with the tool.
According to the instructions, inside the chainsaw body there is a fuel tank and an engine, and on the outside there is a handle, a starter, a bar with a chain (saw part).
When they say that a saw won’t start, they may also mean the following: it starts, but immediately stops working, loses power or the quality of the cut.
Most often, interruptions in the operation of the saw are caused by the operation of the engine, but it is not recommended to disassemble it right away - it is better to start looking for the problem gradually, from the simplest.
So, first of all, pay attention to the fuel - if its composition and preparation method are not suitable, then even very reliable tools, like Husqvarna 142 or Ural, will not work.
The correct fuel mixture is prepared only from gasoline, mixing it with a special oil, the brand of which is always indicated in the instructions for the tool.
The problem with oil can be not only in improper preparation, but also in using it for too long - if it sits in your canister for months, it will certainly go bad, and the same fate will await your chainsaw.
Another common problem is that the spark plug may flood while starting the tool.
Inspect the spark plug - if it is completely dry, then something is wrong in the system. The fuel may not be getting into the cylinder.
How to fix a chainsaw
The measures necessary to restore proper operation of the saw, no matter whether you have a Ural or any other model, depend on the location of the problem.
Please note that not everything you can fix with your own hands - if the breakdown is serious, you will have to take the saw to a specialist.
If you have done the first step - checked and corrected the quality of the oil, but the device still does not work, then you can move on.
If the problem is in the candle, then it is also quite simple to solve - you need to unscrew and dry the candle, but do not pierce it, because... this will render the candle unusable.
Excess fuel that is inside should be drained through the hole. You need to dry the candle for at least half an hour, then insert it back and try to start the tool again.
In addition to filling, it may be that the candle has simply become unusable.
In this case, it’s a good idea to have a spare part (or better yet, a set) to replace this element and eliminate it from the possible causes of device failure.
In addition to the spark plug itself, the reason why the chainsaw is difficult to start when hot or stalls may be poor contact connecting the end of the spark plug and the high-voltage wire.
If there is nothing wrong with this area, but there is still no spark, the ignition unit may be broken. It cannot be fixed - you will have to replace it with a new one.
From time to time you have to clean the air filters in chainsaws. If you have never done this before, then the reason for the tool failure may be that it is clogged with dust.
If you have a Shtil 180, Partner 350 or Ural chainsaw, check the saloon first. A common reason for the incorrect operation of these models is its clogging.
You can clean the saloon using a sewing needle - there is nothing complicated about it.
Another point that sometimes worries owners of Shtil 180 chainsaws is frequent idling after the first tanks of gasoline are used up. However, according to experts, this is not a problem at all.
But if the phenomenon still bothers you, then you can use the carburetor screw to reduce the engine speed.
The video below shows how a Shtil chainsaw is repaired.
You can also clean the muffler yourself - this is a problem not only for Shtil 180 or Husqvarna 142 chainsaws. Domestic Druzhba and Ural can also stall due to this problem.
The problem with poor performance of chainsaws often lies in the carburetor, but it may not be possible to repair it yourself without experience in this matter.
Therefore, if you have not done this before, take your saw to the specialists. Trying to save now, you may end up paying many times more if you accidentally damage some important part.
If you have done all of the above and the problem is still not resolved and your chainsaw stalls or does not start, then the problem may lie in the cylinder group.
If chips and damage are found on the cylinder or piston assemblies, then these elements will have to be replaced or the cylinder will have to be bored out for a new piston of a suitable size.
If you inspect the chainsaw tubes and see that they are leaking, this means that the problem with your chainsaw is insufficient lubrication of the chain.
To fix this problem, you need to replace the tubes and carefully seal the places where they connect with sealant.
It may also be that the parts with which your saw is equipped have expired. In this case, you will have to replace them with new ones.
You can see the service life of the components in the instructions.
Shtil 180 is one of the most common models of chainsaws, so let’s talk about its problems in more detail.
The most common reason why a Shtil 180 model saw does not start or stalls is that the carburetor is clogged. In this case, it will have to be cleaned. The second most common problem is a clogged fuel filter.
If it malfunctions, it will have to be replaced.
Replacing the spark plug is also a common solution to problems with the 180.
Also look at the condition of the pistons - perhaps they, as well as the cylinder and seals, need to be replaced.
In general, the Shtil 180 model is quite durable and, most likely, if it does not start or stalls, then the problems with it are not too serious and you can fix them yourself.
The video below shows the repair of a Ural chainsaw carburetor.
Almost the same can be advised regarding the Partner 350 and Husqvarna 142, Ural, Makita models.
First of all, check the air filter - it could be clogged with sawdust and other debris. Then inspect the carburetor (in the Partner 350 it is located in the same place as the spark plug).
The main advice in repairing a chainsaw with your own hands is not to do what you don’t know how to do, because... this can only make the situation worse.
If the chainsaw does not start, stalls or does not work well, then first check the simplest and most easily accessible elements: perhaps the oil was chosen incorrectly, or it is flooding the spark plug, the filter is clogged, or the pipes have begun to leak.
All these problems can be easily fixed with your own hands.
In case of serious damage, if you do not have the necessary qualifications, it is better not to try to repair it yourself and entrust the work to a specialist.
In any case, fixing the breakdown, even with someone else’s hands, will cost you less than a new model.
Don’t forget to also check the instructions for the tool and promptly replace all the parts responsible for its operation.
This will help you not to rack your brains over why the tool stopped working and not waste time disassembling and checking it.
If you still cannot do without repairs, then before starting work, watch a video on how to disassemble and repair a chainsaw - it will help you.
Carburetor inspection
The device is responsible for creating a certain mixture of air and fuel, which is then supplied to the cylinder. The design of carburetors is different, therefore, if possible, you should find documentation for a specific model.
During operation, the nuts securing the fuel supply device may have become loose; you should check their tightening. It is also recommended to look carefully to see if there are any drips or oil stains on the carburetor body. It is better to trust carburetor repairs to service center technicians.
If this is not possible, then you need to:
- Disconnect the tubes and wires, remove all interfering elements.
- Clean the carburetor without removing it. Blow with compressed air.
- Unscrew the device - it can be secured with two or four bolts.
- Rinse again and blow from the outside.
- Carefully disassemble, simultaneously drawing up a diagram of the device (if there is no documentation).
- Wash the parts in clean gasoline and blow out the channels with air.
- Assemble the carburetor according to the drawing.
- Install back onto the engine.
Independent repair of equipment that is under warranty entails termination of the manufacturer’s obligations.
Have you ever had to repair a chainsaw?
It happened! It didn’t happen
The design of a regular chainsaw cannot be considered complex, although professional equipment can be very different from household equipment. If the chainsaw does not start, you can try to solve the problem yourself, but this will require caution. It would not be superfluous to have experience in repairing, for example, any motorcycle equipment.
