Product marking
All steels are marked using a combination of letters and numbers. Each brand has its own purpose. At the beginning of the marking a number is indicated that indicates the carbon content in this alloy. Based on its percentage, the following types of steels are distinguished: low-carbon (less than 0.25%), medium-carbon (from 0.25% to 0.65%), high-carbon (more than 0.65%). For example, in steel grades 30ХГСН2А
and
30KhGSA
20KhGNM
steel grade contains 0.2% carbon, which makes it low-carbon.
The letters indicated in the combination indicate the content of a specific alloying element. The most common:
- X-chrome;
- G-manganese;
- N-nickel;
- C-silicon;
- B – niobium;
- M-molybdenum.
Sometimes the letter is followed by a number, which indicates the percentage of that element. If the number is missing, the quantity of the element does not exceed 1.5%. For example, in steel grade 25KhGSA
contains 0.25% carbon, and less than 1.5% manganese and silicon.
The letter “A” at the end of the marking indicates that the steel belongs to the category of high-quality products, and the letter “W” - to particularly high-quality products. Thus, steel grade 30ХГСН2А
is high quality.

Steel grade 20ХГНМ
Chrome-manganese-nickel steel with molybdenum grade 20ХГНМ
characterized by a content of 0.2% carbon and less than 1.5% manganese, nickel and molybdenum. In total, the amount of alloying elements is approximately 4%, which indicates that this grade belongs to the category of medium alloy steels.
As a heat treatment grade 20ХГНМ
hardening (at 860oC) and tempering (at 150 - 180oC) are used.
The hardening process is based on the recrystallization of steel when heated to a temperature above the critical temperature. Tempering is always carried out after quenching in order to increase viscosity and reduce residual stresses. Grade 20ХГНМ
is used for the production of parts that are subject to high vibration and dynamic loads.
The main mechanical properties of 20KhGNM
: impact strength - 590 kJ/m2, short-term strength - 1180-1570 MPa, yield strength for residual deformation - 930 MPa.

Chrome-silicon-manganese steel grade 25KhGSA
is high quality, it contains 0.25% carbon, less than 1.5% manganese and silicon. The total alloying elements are less than 3%, so it is low alloyed. Its distinctive technological properties include a tendency to temper fragility and flocking. As a heat treatment, they resort to hardening (at 890oC) and tempering (at 600oC).

Fe is the basis. According to GOST 4543-71, the content in especially high-quality steel is regulated: P≤0.025%; S≤0.015%; Сu≤0.25%.
Steel grade 30ХГСН2А
In steel grade 30ХГСН2А
contains 0.3% carbon, less than 1.5% manganese and silicon, about 2% nickel. In total, the number of chemical additives is approximately 5%, which indicates that the steel belongs to the medium-alloy category. At the end of the marking there is the letter “A”, which indicates that the steel is high quality. The weldability of this steel is poor (it refers to difficult-to-weld products).
Specifics of heat treatment of grade 30ХГСН2А
directly depends on the type of supply: for thick sheets, quenching and tempering are used, and for thin sheets, normalization is used.
Normalization involves heating the alloy with further cooling. Thanks to this, the mechanical properties of the product (viscosity and ductility) are significantly increased. In industry, the 30ХГСН2А
is actively used for the manufacture of flanges, rollers, wool and many other heavily loaded parts operating under pressure at temperatures from -65 to 450°C.
