Line and reel for trimmer: how to make the right choice
Trimmer line diameter

How to cut a bottle into ribbon
Before you start making a homemade cord, you will need to prepare the material itself, namely a plastic tape of the required width and length. To unravel a PET bottle onto a ribbon, various devices are used, the manufacturing algorithm for which can be found on the Internet. If you are going to mow large areas of grass and you will need a lot of homemade cord, then, of course, it makes sense to make a more complex bottle cutter from an angle or U-shaped aluminum profile. The process of making a bottle cutter is shown in this video.
But if mass production of plastic tape does not interest you, then from time to time you can dissolve the bottle into strips in a simple way.
- Take a regular PET bottle cap.
- Cut it in half (but not all the way).
- Remove any beads inside the cork.
- After folding the cut cork in half, pierce it all the way through with a knife, as shown in the picture below, being careful as the plastic is very hard. To facilitate the process, the tip of the knife can be heated.
- Cut the bottom of the plastic bottle with scissors (as smooth as possible, without nicks). Insert the bottle into the device from the side where the knife blade is sharpened, and begin to cut in little by little. When a small strip appears, just start pulling it.
This way, the entire plastic container will unravel into a ribbon of the same width.
A pocket version of a bottle cutter that you will always have at hand can be made from a regular pencil sharpener, preferably made of aluminum. How to make it is shown in detail in this video.
Line section for trimmer
There are the following main types of fishing line sections: - square; - round; - with sharp edges (star-shaped).
The cross-sectional shape of the line must correspond to the thickness of the vegetation being mowed. A round line is required for mowing lawns and young grass. Here the choice depends on the individual model and the purpose of the trimmer. Such a reel is attached to the trimmer in the same way as + how to install fishing line + on the drum. For such purposes, it is advisable to use a brush cutter equipped with a metal blade.
From a drill
The simplest mower is made in a matter of minutes from a drill or screwdriver . But first you must make a knife from a sharpened metal plate with a hole drilled in the center. A bolt is inserted into this hole and tightened with a nut.
Next, the bolt is clamped in the drill chuck, and the trimmer is ready.
Since a drill with this attachment does not have a protective casing, such a tool is quite dangerous for the user. To protect yourself, you can place the drill, like a grinder (discussed above), on the handle of a shovel or on an aluminum pipe.
Also, to protect the user of the mower from knives, a casing can be attached to the drill (attached to a plastic pipe and placed on the body of the device).
The drill is attached to the rod using clamps.
Trimmer reel modifications

Types of semi-automatic heads
A semi-automatic mowing head usually consists of a housing, inside of which there are several springs and a spool. Spools, according to their design, are divided into:
- single-section – in devices of this type, the cutting line used is wound evenly;
- two-section – in these spools, each end of the cord must be wound separately, onto the part intended for this. Two-section spools differ from single-section spools in durability and ease of operation. In addition, the fishing line inside them never bends or gets tangled.
Many owners of household trimmers convert single-section spools to two-section ones. To do this, you will need to find a durable metal plate and apply a contour with the diameter of the spool on it. After this, the plate is cut along the contour so that the thickness is near the place where the cord is wound. As a result, the resulting circle should move freely around its axis. Next, you will need to make a cut on the resulting ring and insert the spool inside the ring. Both parts must be connected to each other using tape or quick-drying glue. As a result, the manufacturer will have a spool in which the line can be wound into two sections.
Composition of fishing line and reel for trimmer

Typical malfunctions and their independent elimination
Naturally, during operation, trimmer owners encounter certain malfunctions of the mowing heads. However, most often they are associated with certain difficulties when pulling (elongating) the cutting cord from the reel. The most common reasons for the lack of line feed is its “biting” between turns or sticking together .
If the string does not feed
In this case, the cause of the defect is incorrect winding of the cutting cord. The line may be wound with insufficient tension, which causes the turns to cross each other and tangle the string. When the reel rotates, the cutting cord is tightened under the action of the resulting centrifugal force, which in turn leads to the free end of the line being clamped between the turns. To eliminate this malfunction, you need to dismantle the coil, disassemble it and rewind the string so that the turns lie in even rows, pressed tightly against each other.
If the string is stuck
Sticking of line turns directly in the mowing head can be caused by:
- poor quality material from which the string is made;
- overheating of the coil due to intensive use of the trimmer;
Advice! To avoid sticking of the cord inside the mowing head, experts recommend that after threading the string into the reel, apply a thin layer of silicone grease to its surface. In addition, it is better not to use fishing line from unknown manufacturers.
If, however, the user was unable to avoid the line sticking together, then for repairs the trimmer reel must be removed and the existing cord replaced with a better one.
If the string consumption is too high
When using semi-automatic mowing heads, the user may experience accelerated cutting cord consumption due to spontaneous elongation of the cutting cord. As a rule, this happens due to the weakening of the spring installed inside the coil. You can fix the problem by placing several washers under the spring.
If the bobbin does not spin
Failure to operate a semi-automatic trimmer coil can also be caused by frequent collisions of its head with hard objects (dry branches, soil, stones, etc.). In this situation, the fishing line is slightly stretched and then quickly pulled into the reel. Due to strong friction, the cord heats up, which can lead to sticking of its turns together. To eliminate the defect, the string will need to be rewound.
If the string feeds spontaneously
Spontaneous elongation of the fishing line followed by cutting off its ends can be caused by a violation of the order of head assembly after replacing the cutting cord. Often, users who do not have sufficient experience forget to install the pressure spring inside the head, which causes premature operation of the mechanism responsible for feeding the line.
Removing the mowing head
When starting to repair the trimmer head, the owner needs to protect himself from injury if the engine is accidentally started, for which it is imperative to completely turn off the power to the electric garden tool or turn off the engine of the brush cutter. Most often, the owner of a trimmer is faced with the need to replace the cutting cord. This process begins after the head is removed from the shaft. This must be done carefully to avoid damaging it.
Important! The gear shaft with which the trimmer is equipped has a left-hand thread at the end, so the mowing head is unscrewed clockwise when removed.
Remove the coil in the following order:
- aligning the holes on the axle and washer, firmly fix the mower shaft using a screwdriver or metal rod;
- Unscrew the actuator by rotating its body clockwise.
Having removed the mowing head, they begin to disassemble it, for which you need to carefully open the cover, which is most often secured with specially provided plastic clips. To do this, press the edges of the cover and at the same time press the latch into the body.
Attention! If the trimmer is equipped with a semi-automatic head with a button at the bottom, then you need to open it with special care - when removing the cover, the pressing spring may fly out and be lost.
Loading the string into the spool
To load the line correctly, you must follow the operating instructions included with the trimmer. As a rule, this operation is carried out as follows:
- cut off the required amount of cord and fold it in half;
- the resulting loop is inserted into one of the specially provided grooves (holes) of the spool;
- when pulling the fishing line, turn the spool counterclockwise several times, while the turns of the cord should be laid in dense layers (one to the other), avoiding overlaps;
- Having finished winding, leave the ends of the fishing line free (about 20 cm), which are fixed in the grooves on the sides of the spool;
- mount the mechanism in its place, for which you need to assemble it in the reverse order, returning all existing parts (spring, washers, etc.) to their original position, and install the reel with string in the head body;
- the free ends of the cord are passed through the existing eyes (holes), after which the body is closed with a lid, which is fixed with latches.
At this point, charging the mowing head with cord can be considered complete. The coil is screwed onto the trimmer shaft, having previously fixed it rigidly. How this is done is described above. You can check the performance of the head by mowing a small area of the lawn.
Advice! In cases where the owner of a trimmer prefers to replace a failed head with a new one, experts recommend avoiding purchasing cheap non-original coils imported from China.
