What chain on Stihl 180 how many links

CIRCUIT PARAMETERS

The main geometric parameters of the saw chain are pitch, profile height and shape of the cutting tooth, thickness of the drive link, number of links. The pitch is half the distance between the centers of three consecutive rivets.

It is usually measured in inches, and each has a symbol (see table 1). Based on the height of the tooth profile, saw chains are divided into low- and high-profile. Thus, for powerful chainsaws, STIHL provides Rapid chains with a higher tooth, and for less powerful chainsaws, Picco chains with a lower tooth. The number of links determines the length of the chain, depends on the power of the engine installed in the saw, as well as the type of work performed and corresponds to the size of the tire.

The thickness of the drive link is measured in millimeters (mm) and must correspond to the width of the groove of the tire used (c/i. Table 2). The last number of this thickness is stamped as a symbol on each drive link of the chain.

Saw chains may also differ in the shape of the cutting tooth. Chains produced by STIHL have two such forms - Micro (M), Super (S). Without going into the intricacies of the design, we note that a saw chain with a Micro cutting tooth shape is universal; it combines high cutting performance, ease of use, long service life and simple maintenance.

Meets the requirements of construction, agriculture and forestry. The Super tooth shape saw chain combines maximum cutting performance, high plunge-in efficiency and low feed force to meet the highest demands on professional forestry tools. These chains cut faster and are good for cutting hard or frozen wood. There are certain features when sharpening a Super saw chain.

In addition, STIHL has a Duro saw chain with carbide-tipped teeth. It combines the highest wear resistance, ease of use and good performance. Stable when working with dirty wood or in short contact with the ground, when sawing formwork boards or scaffolding after finishing work.

Highly effective when used in forest areas damaged by fire. Duro chains last up to 10 times longer than non-carbide-tipped saw chains. Such chains are much more expensive, and are sharpened with an electric sharpening machine with a diamond sharpening wheel in specialized service centers.

Stihl saw chains are the standard of reliability, wear resistance, durability and quality. Stihl saw chains have excellent guiding properties and high cutting performance. All Stihl saw chains are manufactured with “Swiss precision” at the STIHL plant in Wiel (Switzerland).

All driving chain links have special small lubrication channels into which adhesive oil enters, which is then transferred to the chain hinges and evenly distributed over the sliding surface of the guide bar.

All STIHL cutting teeth are made from special steel. The cutting edges of the teeth are treated with electrolytic chrome plating for additional wear resistance. This increases the sharpening intervals of the cutting teeth. Due to induction hardening, the wear resistance of the entire support surface of the saw chain increases. The service life of the guide bar is increased.

Almost all STIHL saw chains have markings on the cutting teeth to indicate the degree of wear. It also helps you navigate when sharpening and maintain the sharpening angle.

The connecting rivets of STIHL saw chains are processed using the induction heating hardening method, which leads to a change in the crystal lattice of the metal. The rivets become harder and stronger. Thanks to the use of a special stamping method, the holes for STIHL hinges have a mirror-smooth surface. This improves chain mobility and increases service life.

STIHL saw chains undergo a constant load tensile test at the final stage of the production process. This “stretch” minimizes elongation during first use and increases strength and wear resistance.

Stihl saw chains are manufactured and supplied in different chain lengths, pitches and applications for different chain saws.

All Stihl saw chains have the following designations:

How to choose a saw chain for your chainsaw? The answer is simple - use the table below:

o – suitable

– – less suitable

+ – recommended

++ – highly recommended

* – for saws MS190T, 192T, 200T, the use of a STIHL 1/4″ Rapid Micro Spezial (RMS) saw chain is only permitted in combination with a STIHL Carving guide bar

If your saw chain is dull, sharpening it is quite simple. Using a template and STIHL files, this can be easily done by any feller in the forest or a private user at home or in the country. The most important thing is to sharpen on time, not to bring the chain to the point where it will no longer be possible to correct it, when it, in turn, will damage the entire saw. It’s better to watch the VIDEO (given below), where it is explained in accessible, understandable language how to sharpen a saw chain yourself, how to understand that it has already become dull, etc. But first of all, it is recommended to strictly follow the basic and main requirements of the instructions when using a chainsaw:

  • Correctly prepare the appropriate gasoline mixture 1/50
  • To lubricate the chain, if there is no STIHL oil, use any thick transmission oil, or the oil specified in the instructions
  • Do not turn the jet on the carburetor if problems arise, but find the real cause
  • Eliminate chain slack
  • Monitor chain sharpening
  • Do not “play” with the throttle trigger

According to the factory’s recommendation, a professional feller must have two tires, one sprocket and four chains - this is the norm for mutual wear of the saw set

By following all the recommendations, you can successfully work with a chainsaw, avoiding breakdowns; it will be a long-term assistant in your work.

Technical characteristics of Stihl MS 170

The Shtil MS 170 chainsaw is designed for work in the garden. It is light, moderately powerful and responsive. Chainsaw power 1.8 l. With. if you convert this to kilowatts, it will be 1.3. Of course, this is not enough for serious tasks, but for sawing up trash, preparing firewood for the barbecue and simple construction tasks, this is quite enough. Saw weight 3.9 kg. Thanks to such a low weight, even a woman can easily handle it. The working volume of the cylinder is 30.1 cm³, the cylinder has a diameter of 31 mm. The chainsaw is equipped with a 35 cm long bar, which corresponds to 14 inches.

You can watch the video below of how the Shtil MC 170 chainsaw is unpacked, prepared for use and started for the first time.

How to choose the right file sizes for chain sharpening?

The main difficulty is determining the size of a round file because the job done with a flat tool is much easier. For Stihl saw teeth, the top end of the file should protrude onto the surface of the working angle by 20% of its height. However, remember the saw chain pitch is usually taken at 0.325 inches.

The next step in choosing is to determine the length of the round file. It depends on its size. GOST 1465 establishes five numbers for this tool, but only number 4 or 5 is suitable as a file for sharpening a chainsaw. Files No. 4 have a working length of 200 mm, and No. 5 - 250 mm and 300 mm. As the length increases, the amplitude of movements of the working hands increases, therefore, the quality of the file guidance along the tooth increases accordingly. Therefore, a longer sharpening file is better.

Possible problems during operation

"Calm". The MC 180 chainsaw, the cost of which can be 15,000 rubles, should be used very carefully. Why does the Shtil 180 chainsaw not start? Obstacles for inexperienced craftsmen may arise when starting for the first time. If you are used to working with the Russian brands “Druzhba” and “Ural”, then due to inexperience you can simply fill the candle. This effect can occur if the starter is stretched too many times. If you are faced with the problem that the Shtil-180 chainsaw will not start, then after you figure it out, you will understand that the tool will start from a cool state without any problems. To do this, you will need to move the lever to the last position, then slowly pull the starter 2 times. Then pull it quickly a couple of times, and after that the saw will definitely start. You should not leave gas in the tank if you do not plan to work with the equipment for a certain number of days. It is recommended to exhaust the tank 100%. Experts recommend choosing such equipment for those users who want to become owners of not very expensive, but reliable and high-quality equipment.

In search of an answer to the question of why the Shtil-180 chainsaw may not start, you need to use the above tips.

Characteristics MS 180-14

This equipment belongs to the household class; the manufacturer indicates the purpose of the tool, which should be used in gardening. The power of the unit is 1500 watts, the working volume is equivalent to 31.8 cm3. Main page » how many links are there in a chainsaw chain, in the STIHL 180 chainsaw. The chain contains 50 links, and the thickness and pitch of the chain are 1.3 mm and 3/8″, respectively. The product comes with a one-year warranty after purchase and the tool weighs 5.7 kilograms. You can use this equipment for cutting down small trees, bushes, thinning groves, and also for quickly collecting firewood. Home craftsmen successfully use the units for other types of work. A two-stroke gasoline engine is installed inside; the manufacturer equipped the equipment with an IntelliCarb carburetor, which is equipped with a compensator.

Side chain tensioner

Access to the tension screw is provided from the side through the chain sprocket cover. This prevents hand contact with the sharp chain and the tips of the dog.

STIHL ElastoStart

As a result of compression pressure when starting two-stroke engines, jerky forces appear that load muscles and joints. The ElastoStart starting device significantly reduces these harmful effects. The damping element in the handle of the ElastoStart starter alternately absorbs and then gives energy according to the compression process, and thus the start occurs moderately, without shocks.

User manual

The passport of the petrol saw “Shtil” MS-180 is the instruction manual, which contains complete information about the tool itself. Before starting operation, you must carefully study the manual to avoid annoying malfunctions.

We suggest you read the instructions for the chainsaw.

Device

Chainsaw “Shtil” MS-180 consists of: gasoline engine, carburetor, casing, starter, flywheel, clutch, decompression valve, oil, fuel pump and tank, spark plug, saw chain, tire, sprocket, brake, air filter, shift lever , dust collector, muffler, clamps, tension wheel, gear stop, adjustment screw, handle.

Preparing a Stihl chainsaw for work

The preparation of the saw should be approached with all responsibility, since its service life in the future, as well as the safety of the operator, depends on this. Let's consider the correct algorithm of actions when preparing a chainsaw for operation:

  • The Stihl chainsaw is assembled (according to the descriptions and diagrams in the manual);
  • the splint is put on and secured;
  • the chain is tensioned;
  • the fuel mixture is prepared correctly: gasoline is diluted with oil in a ratio of 50/1 (the amount of AI-92 gasoline is 5 liters, special Stihl oil for two-stroke engines is 100 ml);
  • the fuel mixture is poured into the tank;
  • Chain lubrication oil is poured into the tank;
  • the reliability of fastener tension is checked;
  • the saw is started according to the instructions;
  • the carburetor is adjusted at idle speed with the appropriate screw (the chain should not move);
  • The supply of lubrication to the chain is checked.

We invite you to watch a video about how to assemble the Shtil chainsaw:

Our video will tell you how to start the Shtil 180 chainsaw:

Break-in period for the Shtil chainsaw

In the usual sense, there is no break-in for the Stihl 180 saw. It is initially ready to work. However, the equipment owner needs to know and understand the following:

For the first 4 to 8 full fuel tanks, the operation of the gasoline saw should be carried out in a gentle mode, not at the full power of the power plant, with frequent breaks to cool the tool. The first 60 minutes of operation of the Calm chainsaw consists of intervals of work and rest: 2 min. work, 10 seconds - idle, break

Idling for more than 10 seconds damages the spark plugs, leaving carbon deposits on them. It is very important to properly prepare the fuel mixture from high-quality materials (1/50, AI-92 gasoline and higher, Stihl oil for 2-stroke engines).

Maintenance

Before use, check:

  • chain condition, sharpening;
  • chain tension;
  • tightening fasteners;
  • filling fuel and oil tanks;
  • presence of chain lubrication;
  • idle speed, etc.

After sawing work the following is carried out:

  • cleaning the chainsaw;
  • the chain tension is weakened (required);
  • chain sharpening (if necessary);
  • condition of the tire, its wear;
  • filter maintenance (as needed).

Main characteristics

The Shtil-180 chainsaws, reviews of which you should research before purchasing the tool, have a motor power of 1500 W. Craftsmen are quite often interested in the cylinder volume, which is 31.8 cubic meters. cm. Fuel tank volume in liters is equivalent to 0.27. The length of the tire can be from 300 to 350 mm. It is very comfortable to work with the equipment because it has a low weight, limited to 3.9 kilograms. You might be intrigued by the chain pitch, which is 3/8″.

Additional functionality includes automatic chain lubrication, power button locking, and a lubricant reservoir with a capacity of 0.26 liters.

When choosing a chainsaw, you should definitely pay attention to additional functions, namely: a compensator, a chain lubrication system, and an anti-vibration system. All these additions are available in the described model

Why is the tabular version of presenting information the best?

The chainsaw chain selection table is the most convenient way to visualize summary data. With this indicator, there will no longer be a need to puzzle over whether the dimensions of the new components correspond to the elements that were installed on the factory model. The key characteristics were used:

The first parameter is determined by many factors and is usually within the range of 30-45 cm, although there are exceptions.

Chain pitch is the distance measured between 3 nearby rivets.

The thickness of the drive links or the height of the tire groove can be measured with a regular caliper. Usually it is in the range of 1.1-2.0 mm.

The total number of cutting links is also taken into account when selecting a chain.

Choice

Manufacturers of chainsaws recommend using a saw bar of a certain size and technical parameters for each specific model. To make the right choice, you should take these parameters into account and then there will be no problems.

Main settings

When choosing, consider the main five parameters:

  1. Length.
  2. Width of the guide groove.
  3. Tire sprocket pitch.
  4. The number of chain links intended for it.
  5. The type of shank and model of chainsaws on which it can be installed.

Depending on the power of the chainsaw, it is possible to install headsets of different lengths on it, which allows you to adjust the performance and load on the saw. Manufacturers can indicate the length in both centimeters and inches and, as a rule, this is not the entire length of the tire, but only a characteristic of the length of its working part. Choosing the right tire for a chainsaw should begin with studying the instructions for the chainsaw and finding out the permissible length for a particular model. For example, for the Shtil MS 180 chainsaw, the recommended lengths are 14 or 15 inches.

The width of the guide groove, as well as the pitch of the sprocket on the bar, must correspond to the same parameters of the saw chain, otherwise installation of the chain on the bar will not be possible. The groove width for household models of chainsaws is 1.1 and 1.3 mm for professional models 1.5. The most common sprocket pitch sizes are 0.325 and 3/8 inches.

Depending on the type of shank, the bar can only be installed on certain chainsaws. This is because the chain lubrication hole on bars designed for certain brands of chainsaws may be located in different places. For example, a tire from a Stihl chainsaw cannot be installed on Husqvarna and vice versa, be sure to take this into account when choosing.

A high-quality video description of the selection process can be viewed below. In this video, a specialist from the gas-powered tools sales department talks about the main characteristics of the saw set, its types and sizes.

Review of STIHL chains: marking, purpose

All STIHL chains are marked, thanks to which you can identify them and find out what models of chainsaws and types of work they are intended for.

The title of the chain model must indicate its length (number of links), pitch and width. The type is also indicated. Type is an internal brand designation, thanks to which company specialists can find the type and shape of the cutting tooth, the dimensions of the link and connecting parts. The designation can be complete, or it can be abbreviated by capital letters, for example, chain , abbreviated as PM3.

An ordinary user, in principle, does not need such information, because in order to choose the right headset, it is enough to know the properties of the chainsaw, the planned volume and types of work.

STIHL website has an electrical consultant who automatically generates a list of chains suitable for a specific chainsaw model.

The service is successful and understandable, but it has one big drawback: you can only select chains for STIHL chainsaws. If you have a different chainsaw, you will have to find it by features and name, which is not very convenient, since the list of models is quite large.

The largest size available for sale is 105 links, which is actually twice as long as the chain on the STIHL MC 180.

Rapid Micro chain series

The Rapid Micro chain line contains about 10 types, each of which has on average three options with different pitch and width features. What's included in the sharpening kit?

In the absence of a dedicated machine, you will need to use a file to sharpen your chain chains (or rather, not one, but two). You also need a special template with which you can check the current value of the sharpening angle. Thus, the main set of grinding tools includes:

  1. Round file with a diameter of 4.5. 5 mm.
  2. A holder with special positioning lines with which the tool can be positioned with the required precision on the upper edge. The holder is equipped with a part that rests on the surface of the cut-off depth limiter.
  3. A flat file that sharpens the stopper itself.
  4. The hook that removes sawdust is formed during the sharpening process.

External signs of dull saw blades

The most popular chainsaws are tools from the Austrian company Stihl, in particular the Shtil-180 (to be precise, Stihl MS-180-14"). Such a chainsaw can cut a branch, and the branches are of medium diameter. handle 1500 watts of power. Despite the trademark quality steel (we don't consider Chinese knockoffs!) used to make teeth, self-sharpening will require skill and time.

You should pay attention to the following external signs of dullness of the cutting chain:

  1. A conical section appeared on the working angle of the tooth.
  2. When moving from the working corner to the top surface, the radial rounding is visually different.
  3. During the initial feed, even at a relatively low intensity, the insertion of the working edge of the tooth into the thickness of the wood is carried out with great resistance.
  4. During the stable cutting stage, the chainsaw begins to vibrate and the noise level of the chainsaw increases noticeably.
  5. When sawing longitudinally, the cut surface has rough cuttings and wood chips. The chips themselves are becoming much smaller in size.

The test is carried out on dry wood, and in any case not on wood with high humidity. The frequency of sharpening depends on the direction of the main sawing. If it is performed primarily in the axial direction, then sharpening must be done much more often.

The manufacturer produces two modifications of the popular MS-180 model:

  • petrol saw Stihl MS-180/14;
  • analogue of MS-180/16.

The last digit in the model name is the tire length. It is indicated in inches. Accordingly, the number 14 is 35 cm, and 16 is 40 cm.

The length of the bar determines the length of the cut . This parameter should be your main one when choosing a saw modification:

  1. If you need a gasoline saw only for gardening , construction of a log house, then the MS-180/14 modification is suitable for you. It copes with wood and lumber with a cross-section of up to 30×30 cm or a diameter of up to 30 cm. Its power is the same as its analogue with a tire length of 16 inches.
  2. For felling thick trees and processing their trunks, the Shtil MS-180/16 saw model is optimal.

The manufacturer's recommended price at Russian Stihl dealerships is RUB 12,390. (as of February 2017).

Where is the unit manufactured?

Stihl is a privately held, family-owned company. Its head office is located in the German city of Waiblingen. The company has subsidiaries for the production and sale of various tools in 160 countries. There are dealer centers in Russia as well.

Stihl designs, manufactures and markets motorized tools for the construction, agriculture and forestry industries.

The American-made Stihl MS-180 chainsaw is mainly sold in Russia. However, in 2006, the company launched an assembly plant in the Chinese city of Qingdao. These licensed products also began to be supplied to Russia. It is of slightly worse quality than its American counterpart.

The sticker under the muffler has a barcode and information about the country of origin of the saw.

How to distinguish between a Chinese and American-made Stihl chainsaw?

  1. Inspect the nameplate . This is a sticker with the serial number of the tool. It is located at the front (under the muffler). Data about the country of origin must also be printed on it.
  2. The first number on the barcode of the saw will help you distinguish the place of production . If it is 2, then the unit was made in the USA; if it is 8, the instrument is Chinese.

There are many counterfeits of Stihl products in Russia. In the vast majority of cases they are Chinese.

Visually, a licensed chainsaw and a counterfeit analogue are practically indistinguishable.

How to quickly check the authenticity of a chainsaw?

  1. The tool must have three serial numbers . The first one must be present on the package. Two more should be located on the instrument itself. One is extruded on the plastic of the body platform (under the muffler), and the other is on the sticker just below. All serial numbers must be the same . Provided that the packaging box is opened by the seller in front of you. If an instrument is brought from a warehouse, already printed or taken from a display case, a different number may appear on the box. The numbers on the saw itself must match in any case.

The complete set of the original unit - there should be nothing more here.

  1. This unit comes with only a screwdriver for adjustment and a 19×13 wrench . They can be replaced with a multifunction key. In addition: an instruction manual (in Russia - necessarily in Russian) and a cover for the guide bar.

If any of the listed accessories are not in the box or something new has been added, this is a fake. Provided that changes in the configuration are not reflected in the saw's data sheet.

Reviews Stihl MS 170

In conclusion of the article, I would like to consider a real review from a buyer of the Shtil MC 170 chainsaw taken from a large online store.

Advantages:

  • Not heavy;
  • Quite powerful;
  • Comfortable;
  • Well put together.

Flaws:

  • It's hard to start when it's cold;
  • A little expensive.

A comment:

After we finished construction, there was a lot of wood waste left. Moreover, we asked our neighboring builders, they cut down two large birch trees for firewood on their site. They disturbed them. So we decided to buy a saw. Stihl 170, I liked it right away. Comfortable and lightweight. We looked at cheaper options, for five to six thousand, but they didn’t really suit me. Either it won’t start, or the oil is leaking, in general, everything is wrong. We decided to pay more, but buy a quality tool, so as not to have to drive back and forth between the dacha and the service center.

The advantages of the purchase are obvious, oil consumption is not high, and it consumes gasoline decently. But since I bought a saw for the first time in my life, I can’t adequately estimate the cost.

I was told a little late that there are saws with easy starting, so I would have bought it. This would make the already easy operation of the chainsaw even easier. The neighbor's birch trees were cut with a chainsaw with great difficulty, but they were really thick, and we had to cut on all four sides. In general, my opinion about the saw is positive, just a little expensive.

I'm glad I bought it and recommend it to everyone!
