- Types of adhesive tape and its characteristics
Scotch tape is an adhesive tape that is used as packaging material. The exact purpose is determined by the material and thickness of the base, the characteristics of the adhesive layer, and the width of the tape. The group produces adhesive tape:
- packaging and stationery with a polymer base;
- technical types of adhesive tape;
- bilateral;
- krepp.
Types of adhesive tape, their use and sizes
Adhesive tapes are supplied in small rolls, which makes them easier to transport and use as intended. The width of the tape varies from a few millimeters to 10 or more centimeters, which significantly expands the scope of use. Scope of application:
- packaging of goods by sealing boxes, pallets, etc.;
- gluing paper materials - musical notes, printed notes, fixing documents and announcements on wall surfaces;
- room decoration;
- increasing the protective properties of the roofing pie;
- protection of surfaces when performing finishing work.
The scope of application directly depends on the thickness, composition, appearance and strength of the adhesive tape. Below we will look at the most common types.

The 21st century is innovative, technological, universal - a time when mobility comes next to quality, and in all spheres of life the most valuable items are the ones with which you can solve more than one problem. This list includes a lot of things, but today we will talk about the well-known adhesive tape Scotch®. Someone will say: “What can I say? Well, it glues, seals what is needed - that’s all the functions!” Yes, undoubtedly, this is the main one, but the problems that it solves can be completely different, and the parameters of the product depend on this: strength, heat resistance, adhesiveness, transparency, elasticity, the possibility of clean removal, and so on. In order not to get lost in the store looking for the right Scotch®, it will be useful for everyone to learn about the features of the most common types and their capabilities.
Type of adhesive tape Scotch®
Distinctive properties
Application area
Painter
Scotch tape® is made of special crepe paper (crepe tape), due to which it acquires elasticity (extensibility) and the ability to take the shape of the surface to which it is attached. One of the main properties of this type of tape is the ability to be removed cleanly after thermal and chemical influences. Also, the parameters of this paper adhesive tape include thickness, viscosity, adhesiveness, line accuracy, color, etc. Most products have moderate adhesive ability, so they are easily removed without leaving marks on the surface. You can select the required heat resistance of the adhesive tape, sufficient for your task.
When painting cars, walls, etc.: it is glued to those areas of the surface that must remain clean. The product is also used to mark markings or create an inscription. Painting Scotch® is often used to seal window frames during cold seasons (many people mistakenly call it “window tape”) and the corners of any furniture when moving in order to avoid deformation, cracks and chips.
Clerical
This is the most popular type of Scotch® - exactly the way we are used to seeing it: thin, transparent, dense. It is made of polypropylene, with acrylic glue applied on one side - due to this, the product does not come off the surface easily and can leave marks or come off along with the material.

It has a wide range of applications: it can be used to fasten papers, torn sheets, glue advertisements, posters, wall newspapers, etc. Due to its transparency, it is excellent for gift wrapping. And the level of density allows you to seal and carry small loads in boxes or bags with its help. Scotch® is suitable for daily use when solving simple problems. However, if you want to remove it cleanly, you shouldn't leave it on the surface for long (especially if exposed to sunlight).
Packaging
The main feature of this tape is the high degree of adhesion and strength of the base. Scotch® is made of polypropylene, coated on the inside with rubber, solvent or acrylic adhesive. Depending on your goals, you can buy Scotch® in different widths, lengths and densities. For use at low temperatures there are special frost-resistant packaging tapes. As well as sealed adhesive tapes that will show if someone has tried to open the box and custom-made Scotch® with a logo.
It is used to create reliable packaging of cargo - it can be used to seal boxes, for example, with parcels, bulky heavy purchases and gifts.
Sealed and Logo Tape® are designed primarily for long-distance transport or to create additional advertising, prestige and brand recognition. And, of course, to protect the cargo.
Special (special tapes)
Metallized tape
Universal household tape
This is the largest type of single-sided tape in terms of variety. The most popular representatives: metallized Scotch® - made of polypropylene with aluminum coating, enormous temperature resistance, household universal Scotch® - made of PVC with fabric reinforcement, can be torn by hand, reinforced - made of polypropylene with glass fiber reinforcement, aluminum tape - aluminum foil with applied glue, - it is made in such a way that it does not allow any substances to pass through, including water and air, and withstands the effects of weather conditions, many chemical compounds and other factors.
Metallized Scotch® is used to create a reflective surface and markings.
Household universal : the second name of this Scotch® is technical adhesive. Used for everything, pipes, boards, etc. It seals joints, cracks and seams. They can be used to cover heavy loads in boxes and bags, and can also be used instead of electrical tape (not recommended). Reinforced tape is used for packing heavy objects with sharp edges, for reliable fastening and tying.
Aluminum Scotch® is used in construction and installation. It is useful for installing air conditioners, ventilation and much more. Also used for shielding surfaces from temperature influences and masking.
Bilateral
On a fabric basis (or on a non-woven basis)
Polypropylene based
Foam based
Extra strong 3M VHB tape (foamed acrylic)
Double-sided adhesive tape is known to have two sticky layers on both sides. The degree of its adhesion depends on the complexity of the task. This Scotch® is made on the basis of various materials: fabric, polypropylene, foamed polymer and covered with various glues, or has no base at all and is entirely adhesive in a roll (baseless tape). But no matter what area it is used in, double-sided adhesive tape reliably glues materials together.
Double-sided tape® made of polypropylene is used for fastening cardboard, vinyl, rubber, wood, plastic, PVC, paper and other products of various densities.
Fabric-based adhesive tape is used primarily for repair work, namely laying flooring, linoleum, and carpet. Adhesive tape on a non-woven basis is convenient for manual gluing (it can be torn by hand), gluing cardboards and papers.
Double-sided adhesive tape on a foam base (polyethylene) can close large gaps, create additional elasticity, and is used for gluing mirrors, signs, signs, etc. Particularly durable VHB 3M tape can completely replace nails, screws and other fastening materials. Not afraid of reagents and many other chemicals, not afraid of sunlight. Creates a strong elastic connection. Indispensable in construction.
Insulating tape
Single-sided PVC tape with special adhesive applied. It has very high elasticity, strength and increased dielectric properties. Available in a variety of colors for easy marking.
Electrical tape is needed to insulate open sections of electrical wires and contacts. Also, due to its elasticity, you can easily tighten the parts of the product or, without damaging the surface, securely pack something fragile. Or use its different colors for marking.
Painter
It is made on the basis of light rough paper of low strength. The outer side is a corrugated base that absorbs paint, preventing it from flowing down the surface. The other side is coated with rubber adhesive, ensuring strong contact with the base.
Main functions of masking tape:
- protection of surfaces from contamination during finishing;
- creation of perfectly smooth painting zones;
- formation of restrictive marks.
Masking tape is widely used when performing finishing and repair work. High density allows you to limit the depth of penetration of the drill into the wall by wrapping the fabric around the drill.
Reinforced
The polymer tape is supplemented with fabric-polyethylene fabric, which significantly increases tensile strength. Some varieties are reinforced with fiberglass. High strength increases resistance to steam, moisture, and mechanical stress. Well suited for the most reliable packaging of goods.
It can still be torn by hand, but its high resistance to tearing allows the material to be used to strengthen containers, bundle electrical wires, and protect containers from moisture. Ultimate elongation reduces the likelihood of breakage due to impact or friction.
Important! This type of adhesive tape is called construction tape, but this category includes several types of adhesive tapes discussed in this article.
Technical and special adhesive tapes
Used for strong bonding of packaging materials or for technical needs.
Aluminum adhesive tape. Used for communications and equipment installation. The base is made of aluminum and is not subject to corrosion. The adhesive layer is acrylic, with high adhesion. Retains stickiness at temperatures from -20 to +100°C. The width of the tape is 5-10 cm.
Metallized tape. The base is polypropylene with metal coating on the surface, the adhesive layer is acrylic. Used to create strong, hermetically sealed connections in construction, repairs, and equipment installation.
TPL. Adhesive tape with a reinforced PVC base coated with polyethylene. Moisture-proof, creates an airtight connection. The PVC layer is reinforced with cotton fabric for greater durability. Used as packaging material for large, heavy cargo. Can be used to create sealed connections, seams when installing pipes, and equipment elements.
Glass reinforced tape. The base is reinforced with fiberglass, which increases the strength several times. The material has high strength and flexibility. The adhesive layer is rubber, with a high level of adhesion and resistance to high temperatures. This tape can be used for packing heavy loads, when installing equipment, building and other structures.
Clerical
A typical consumable for office workers, students, teachers and people who frequently work with paper materials. The thin transparent polymer base (thickness up to 40 microns) does not have high strength. The degree of adhesion to the base is low. This tape cannot be reliably glued to brick walls, rough surfaces and other similar substrates.
Bilateral
In terms of strength and adhesiveness, it is similar to ordinary stationery tape, but both of its surfaces are adhesive. Depending on the purpose, the density and adhesion to the base can be changed to achieve the specified characteristics.
To glue several surfaces with it, remove the protective film from one side, exposing the adhesive surface. After this, the tape is glued to the base, and at the right moment the protective film is removed from the other side.
Applying glue
The adhesive layer can be found on either one or both sides of the base. Double-sided tape, in turn, is divided into types according to the type of material. How to choose double-sided tape? In this matter, rely on the same criteria as when choosing single-sided adhesive tape. What matters here is:
- purpose of use;
- surface type;
- weight and dimensions of fastened parts.
Since the adhesive layer is on both sides, difficulties may arise during operation. There are several tips on how to use double-sided tape:
- before starting work, degrease the surface and remove dust;
- prepare the required pieces of tape;
- select the main surface to which you will glue another object, and attach a piece of tape to it (as a rule, this is either a large surface or a rough one);
- press a piece of adhesive tape tightly onto it;
- remove the protective film from the second adhesive layer;
- apply and lightly press on the second part.
Lifehack! For many, it is important to find durable double-sided tape that does not leave marks. But since acrylic emulsion is used in production, this is problematic to achieve. Acrylic tape retains its properties for up to 2 years. |
Getting rid of sticky tape marks:
- Solvents: alcohol, acetone, white spirit, vegetable oil. Use active compounds with caution on varnished and painted surfaces.
- Heating with a hairdryer. This method can only be used for heat-resistant materials. Sticky marks will be removed more easily after heating.
- Mechanical removal using a rubber attachment on a drill.
Aluminum
Created on the basis of high-density aluminum foil, one side of which is coated with an adhesive composition with a high adhesion rate. The high density of the metal coating, corrosion resistance and visual attractiveness make it possible to use it for sealing seams, thermal insulation and eliminating cold bridges.
It is used when performing waterproofing and thermal insulation work, installing ventilation, and protecting damaged metal coatings from rust. Aluminum reflects the sun's rays and retains its attractive appearance for a long time.
Note! Do not use foil tape in high humidity or reuse the same piece. Do not touch the adhesive surface with your hands - the glue eats into the skin, causing a chemical burn and injuring the epithelium.
Plumbing
Consists of dense polymer materials with high density and elongation. Attached to the base using glue with a high adhesion rate. The canvas is additionally reinforced to increase strength.
All this is necessary so that plumbing tape can be used to seal pipelines, waterproof panels, seams, and protect air channels from moisture.
Please note! This tape can easily be torn by hand, but when used as intended, it demonstrates its full potential. High strength and tensile strength guarantee reliable insulation.
Double-sided tape
This is a tape that has adhesive on both sides. It comes in rolls and is protected from sticking with wax paper. Double-sided tape without a base is a ready-to-use adhesive layer on a paper backing. Used for gluing paper, cardboard, polymer materials. Double-sided tape with a base is two layers of adhesive applied on both sides to a woven, polypropylene, or paper tape. The base strengthens it and makes the seam resulting from gluing more durable.
Decorative
In essence, it is visually enhanced stationery tape. It can be transparent or colored. Manufacturers use various patterns and other visual effects, including national or thematic ones. This tape is characterized by low adhesiveness and durability, since its main purpose is to decorate the interior and create decorative designs.
Packaging tape: main components
As our regular readers already know, adhesive film of any kind, which can be bought cheaply wholesale or retail in Kharkov, Kiev, Nikolaev, Kherson and other cities of Ukraine, consists of two main components - the base and the adhesive composition. These components can be made from a whole list of natural and synthetic materials. Such a variety of transparent, colored, brown adhesive tape of a certain winding width used for the production of the base for adhesive tape, presented on the Ukrainian market for retail and wholesale buyers, is not accidental. The point is that each specific material of the tape base directly affects its functional purpose. But you can learn in more detail about the specifics of choosing the base for adhesive tape packaging film from our previous articles.
We looked at the options for the base of adhesive film and the materials that are used for its production in Kharkov, Kiev and other cities of Ukraine in previous articles. Now it’s time to closely study the possible adhesive compositions that are used in the production of transparent, colored, brown packaging tape at enterprises in Kharkov, Kyiv and other cities of Ukraine.

Packaging
Such adhesive tapes are designed specifically for packaging goods in different types of containers or forming pallets on pallets. It is distinguished from ordinary stationery tape by its increased strength and characteristic translucent texture, due to the inclusion of rubber adhesive in the polymer composition.
The strip is almost impossible to tear with your hands; the adhesive provides reliable adhesion in all weather conditions and firmly adheres to the packaging film, paper or cardboard. The material is designed to provide a secure fit and hold heavy objects in place.
How to use construction tape correctly (instructions)
Rules for using adhesive tape for long-term use and preservation of adhesive properties:
- removing dust and dirt from the gluing surface;
- stick adhesive tape only on a dry surface;
- in a humid room, you need to pay more attention to the place where the tape is glued to avoid the presence of moisture;
- The adhesive layer should not be touched with hands, so as not to reduce the ability of gluing.
Construction or installation tape allows you to replace a huge number of fastening methods and simplifies the installation process. The main task is to choose the right type of adhesive tape and follow the rules of application.
Transparent and colored
The appearance of the tape depends on the type of materials and dyes used. As a rule, complete transparency indicates a thin thickness and reduced strength of the adhesive tape. Decorative varieties are painted in bright colors, which does not affect the strength characteristics of the material.
Metallized types retain the natural texture of the metal used. Durable and thick tape has a characteristic beige tint, which is the result of the refraction of light rays passing through the thick polymer tape.
With logo (branded)
Applying brand markings with the logo of a particular company is one of the advertising solutions that allows you to determine whether sealed packages have been opened. This is a polypropylene tape on the surface of which the company name, slogan or any other image is applied.
Adhesive tape with a logo does not withstand use in low temperatures, especially if we are talking about low-quality material. A similar technology is used to produce films with watermarks used to confirm the original origin of the packaged product.

Metallized
The film consists of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP film), which serves as a base for metal spraying followed by coating with acrylic varnish. This structure significantly increases the tensile and tensile strength of the adhesive tape and protects the metal from the environment. With their help, surfaces heated to +80 degrees Celsius are sealed.
Roofing
When arranging the walls of frame houses and the roofing system, thermal insulation is used to protect against heat loss. To prevent moisture from penetrating the insulating material, builders use wind and vapor protection, as well as waterproofing. Such films protect well from moisture, but at the joints there is still a risk of water penetrating under the protection.
To prevent this phenomenon, sheets of wind protection and waterproofing are laid overlapping, and the joint is covered with thick adhesive tape with a high adhesion index. When applied correctly, it provides complete protection from moisture, ensuring high durability of the finished finish.
Please note! This tape is effective only when used with rolled protective membranes. In all other cases, only metal brackets and other similar fasteners are used.
Mounting
At its core, it is also double-sided tape, but it is distinguished from its analogues by increased mechanical strength and a high adhesion rate during adhesion. With its help, it is possible to discreetly and effectively glue various surfaces with a smooth connection line. Key benefits:
- applicable for quick installation of various products;
- low consumption;
- durable and reliable grip;
- does not require professional skills or special tools.
The dense polymer base can withstand low and high temperatures. The only requirement for installation is cleaning and degreasing the base.
