Specifications

Before choosing a circular saw for your dacha, you need to familiarize yourself with the main technical characteristics of this tool.

Motor power

Stationary circular saws are considered the most powerful.
The performance of the saw depends on this parameter. The higher the power, the thicker the tree the circular saw can cut. Depending on the power of the electric motor, saws are divided into three types:

  • Up to 1000 W. Suitable for sawing plywood.
  • Up to 1500 W. With their help you can cut logs, thick boards and wooden beams.
  • From 1500 W. Professional tools that can work 5-8 hours a day.

For home use, it is better to choose budget models with a power of 1000-1500 W.

Disc rotation speed

This indicator affects the speed of the circular machine. For people who plan to frequently process hardwood, it is recommended to use models with high disc rotation speeds. This will allow you to make better cuts.

The average rotation speed is about 5000 rpm. Many professional saws speed up to 6500 rpm.

Cutting depth

Angle cutting is often used when working with dense wood.
Another criterion that is taken into account when purchasing a circular saw is the cutting depth. This parameter depends on the diameter of the cutting disc used and the power of the device. For household models, the maximum cutting depth is no more than 55 mm.

If a person has to work with denser materials, it is necessary to use professional saws. With their help, it will be possible to saw wood with a thickness of more than 80 mm.

Working at an angle

Many people who choose a new circular saw for their home pay attention to whether it can be used to work at an angle. It is recommended to buy models that can be used at an angle when cutting products.

To determine that a saw can be used at an angle, you need to inspect its design. It must have a locking mechanism.

Which sole is better

Often people are confused about choosing the best circular saw blade. Many experts claim that the cast platform is the most reliable. However, such circulars are very expensive and few can afford them.

A cheaper and more accessible option is products that are equipped with forged platforms. They are quite tough and thick. The quality is practically in no way inferior to more expensive cast platforms.

Battery type

Cordless models are suitable for outdoor work.
At home, cordless models are often used. These cordless saws are very convenient and allow you to cut wood even in hard-to-reach places. There are two types of batteries that are often used in power tools:

  • Lithium-ion. Modern batteries that drain slowly. The only drawback is poor frost resistance.
  • Nickel-cadmium. Outdated but still in use batteries. They are rarely installed in circular machines, as they quickly discharge.

Important! It is recommended to choose models whose battery has a voltage of at least 18 V.

Do you need a level or a laser pointer?

Devices equipped with an additional laser pointer are often added to the ratings of circular saws. This device is very useful, as it indicates the direction of movement of the circular. Therefore, for beginners who have not previously used such tools, it is better to give preference to models with a laser pointer.

Is speed adjustment necessary?

The speed controller allows you to adjust the rotation speed of the disk.
When choosing a new circular saw, you need to pay attention to whether it has additional functions. It is recommended to buy models that are equipped with a speed controller. Using this device, a person will be able to manually adjust the rotation speed of the working disk. This is very convenient when you have to cut materials of different densities.

Do you need a soft start?

Another additional function that should be in a circular machine is soft start. With its help, you can gradually increase the engine speed and, accordingly, the disk rotation speed. Of course, using this function increases the cutting time. However, in this way it is possible to protect the motor from sudden voltage changes.

Best sawing machines with stand

These models are distinguished by the presence of special legs. They do not require a stable base and are convenient to use when the machine has to be moved frequently.

Which circular saw to choose for your home or garden?

Many people do not know how to choose a circular saw for their home. To make the right choice, you need to decide how often the tool will be used:

  • for regular use - a model with a power of 1500 W or more and a cutting depth of at least 55 mm is suitable;
  • for rare use and cutting thin boards - manual circular saws up to 1000 W.

Important! If you are choosing a saw for construction, it is better to buy a professional model from a well-known company.

How to make your own circular saw for home

The easiest and fastest way is to tip a hand-held circular saw into the table, but this is only good for occasional one-time work. After all, to periodically adjust the position of the disk, the entire structure will have to be removed from the table, and this is not always convenient and always slow. And due to the thickness of the improvised tabletop, the nominal cutting height of the “parquet flooring” loses about 20 mm. The protective cover remains under the table, which is a direct violation of safety regulations. Any attempts to place a manual circular saw on a height-adjustable frame under the table will lead to the appearance of play in the disc relative to the tabletop. Which in no way contributes to the accuracy of the work.

Our option is a stationary machine with a rigidly fixed saw blade shaft and a belt drive from an electric motor.

bed

The material from which the base of the machine will be made is not of fundamental importance. The main thing is that the structure has sufficient strength and can without hesitation withstand the weight of the equipment and the workpiece with the force applied to it. The height of the bed depends on your height: working while bending over a low table or constantly raising your forearms over a high one is not much fun. The length and width of the future machine - taking into account the required space for placing the drive and the dimensions of the workpieces for the nearest project. Doing it with a reserve is not entirely correct, because the task of the frame is to compactly place the electromechanical “filling”, and additional tables can always be built as needed.

Drive unit

Structurally, everything is simple here - a pulley for a poly-V-belt (multi-ribbed) belt on the engine; a pulley with a similar texture on the saw blade shaft; a suitable belt that connects them; and the entire structure on the grooves of the inclined guide (the best option for inexpensive implementation of the function of adjusting the cutting height).

It is somewhat more difficult to organize 3000-4000 revolutions per minute for the idle speed of the disk, but this can be solved - you need to measure the speed and diameter of the pulley on the electric motor. Pulleys are measured at the bottom of the groove. Let's take, for example, 1500 rpm and 10 cm. In order to get the desired 3000, the drive ratio must be 1:2. What can be done if you install a driven pulley with a diameter of 5 cm.

I propose the following principle for constructing a shaft with a driven pulley: because in this form the greatest rigidity of fixation of the unit is ensured.

Table

There is only one requirement for the machine table top – an exceptionally flat surface. The cut for the disk should be made so long that a riving knife with a protective casing fits into it, with a 5-mm gap from the disk in the upper position. When working with workpieces longer than a meter, these elements will provide you with the proper level of safety.

Of the simplest, easiest to use and reliable versions of the parallel stop, I like the model with parallel guides that are clamped on screws that are rigidly positioned in the table top. Because in this case it is easiest to align and tighten the screws with one hand.

The best option for a carriage with an angle stop is an overhead structure that moves along the table, resting on its end. This version eliminates the need to constantly blow through the grooves and deal with backlash.

Even taking into account the fact that you need to pay for the material, pulleys, shafts and engine, the proposed design will cost more than half as much as the most inexpensive ready-made machine, which initially needs serious modification.

Which company to choose

A household circular saw is an ideal choice for the home.
Before purchasing, you need to familiarize yourself with the rating of the best manufacturers of circular saws. Among the companies that are popular among buyers are:

  • Bosch;
  • Hitachi;
  • Husqvarna;
  • Makita;
  • Metabo.

There are other manufacturers of circular saws, but they are less well known.

The best inexpensive circular saws for the home

There is no need to buy expensive circular saws for home use. Budget models are also suitable. The top best inexpensive saws include the following devices:

  • Makita 5007N - is equipped with a powerful engine that provides wheel rotation speeds of up to 6000 rpm.
  • DeWALT DWS510K is a powerful budget saw suitable for cutting dense bars and planks.
  • Makita 5477NB - the disc spins up to 5500 rpm, which allows you to cut wood of any density.

The average cost of budget saws is 10-12 thousand rubles.

Home equipment

Machines in this category are united by: low cost, ease of maintenance and the need for modification. Moreover, one’s hands must be applied both to the design and to the mechanical and electronic “stuffing”. As a result, with some loss of time, but for a relatively small amount, you create equipment that allows you to qualitatively cut blanks from any wood.

Encore Corvette 11 – from 12,824 rubles

Portable circular saw with universal table and assembled stand.

Low price, space for a jigsaw and a router, the ability to cut an 80 mm thick board with a disk from the basic package - all this holds the attention of an inexperienced amateur until the machine is purchased.

The first troubles are weak hardware, the threads of which are dispensed with at the stage of assembling the stand. There is some play in the guide of the stop with the protractor - it will not be possible to repeat the angle at the ends of the decorative parts. Inconvenient setting of the rip fence - it takes a lot of time to move this bar. The disk is lowered arbitrarily - choosing a quarter or a long groove is possible only in several repeated approaches.

This Corvette does not initially have a soft start, but there is play between the gears in the gearbox. Because of this, after just a year of operation in a home workshop, you will have to rebuild the gearbox. From sudden impacts when switching on, the support bearings of the engine shaft are also destroyed. I recommend not using this machine without a soft starter.

Ryobi RTS 1800 – from 14,890 rubles

Sawing machine on a folding scissor-type support.

The most powerful motor in the class of amateur equipment allows you to count on stable operation with any type of wood. Efficiency of adjustment is predetermined by a parallel stop, which is fixed with one clamp. Adjustment of the height and angle of the disk position is also assigned to one handle. The riving knife is adjusted without tools. There is a soft start and electronic protection; It is assumed that there is a retractable table. There is a place to store keys, a compartment for equipment and small items. Low price.

Models from some batches have defects on the table surface - this is a warranty case, but it is better to see this nuance immediately upon purchase. A flimsy angle stop, unreliable fastenings of the motor position adjustment posts - so you must always monitor the load applied to them. The machine was sold in its original configuration for no more than a year. Since 2016, the retractable table has disappeared from the official set - you can buy it in addition or make it yourself. The bearings quickly begin to knock, but this can be reliably treated by replacing them with similar SKF ones.

Keep in mind that Rayobi’s service network in the Russian Federation is not the most developed, and there are no identical sets of parts, except for bearings. Therefore, it is possible that the cost of repairs may exceed the price of new equipment.

BISON ZPDS 255 1600S – from 16,783 rubles

Table saw with a pair of extendable tables and space for additional equipment.

The paradox of this machine is that, although it is the most expensive option among its household analogues, it still remains ill-conceived and also requires improvement. For example, there is a laser cut line indicator, but it is mounted on a flimsy riving device - the beam trembles when trying to align the workpiece with it. The parallel stop ideally holds onto the table on both sides, but its position must be adjusted not according to a ruler, but only relative to the disk. There are mounting spaces for a router and a jigsaw, but without additional preparation, not a single serial tool can be installed in them. The actual maximum for a raised saw blade is limited to 85 millimeters, but the 1.6-kilowatt engine does not always allow you to dissolve even the stated 80 millimeters in one pass - the thermal protection of the engine is triggered and you have to wait until it cools down. It is even stated that there is a lock from restarting, but there is no soft start.

I see that many hobbyists do not want to be left without warranty support, and refuse to purchase this machine in favor of more expensive equipment. Because it’s obvious that without modification there will be no precise work on the Zubr. But in a particular case, the manufacturer openly indicates that even new holes in the table are not a reason to refuse warranty obligations.

The best circular saws for quality and reliability

DeWALT DWE560 is one of the best circular saws.
Among the most reliable and high-quality models are the following:

  • Interskol DP-190. The saw has a power of 1600 W, the diameter of the circle is 19 cm. Allows you to make cuts 60 mm deep.
  • DeWALT DWE560. The device is equipped with a 1300 W motor. This allows you to cut any tree.
  • BOSCH GKS 190. Cutting depth - 70 mm. Cuts both small and dense bars.

Additional Information! All listed models are equipped with soft start.

Machines for professionals

Universal and narrow-profile, stationary and mobile, with V-belt or gear drive - all models from the category of professional machines are designed taking into account operation under heavy loads and over a long period of time.

BELMASH SDM-2000M – from 28,690 rubles

Multifunctional woodworking machine from a Belarusian manufacturer.

The advantages are the price and the fact that the machine: saws and mills with disk equipment; allows you to plan, joint and thickness planing parts on a planing table; can drill, select short blind and through grooves in the workpiece - on an additional table on the side of the quick-release chuck. When working with equipment on one table - sawing, planing or drilling and milling - contact with other moving elements is limited. Convenient reconfiguration - no manipulations with the elements of the poly-V-belt drive are required.

The downside is that there is no soft start and no automatic feed for the thicknesser nozzle. You have to push the workpiece manually, which, with a maximum permissible thickness of 65 mm, even at a workpiece width of 150 mm, is quite difficult for one person to do. And the design is flimsy for such loads.

I strongly recommend not to neglect the setup rules. Because, at my first attempt to work with an end mill, starting the engine led to the saw blade being thrown above the table level. And all because I was too lazy to tighten the wing nut, I just lowered the disk under the table and that’s it. I think that even a soft start could not prevent the problem here, because the engine is quite powerful.

Bosch gts10 xc – from 59,900 rubles

Table circular saw with movable slide, table extender (+435mm) and table extension (+520mm).

A powerful engine, a cast aluminum table, a rigid rip fence with convenient one-sided control - thanks to this set, the machine allows you to work without focusing on the strength of different types of wood. A movable carriage, an extension, an expander and an angular stop - for precise processing of workpieces, from which not only decorative and applied crafts are made, but also large-sized furniture. Any moving element can be adjusted; All possible backlashes are selected using reliable standard fasteners. Protective casing, dense insert plate, overrun brake - for operator safety. Soft start, constant automation and overload protection - to reduce the load on the motor.

There are no objective disadvantages, other than the high cost.

I remember about 5 years ago a batch leaked to Moscow with crooked shields with which the vertical engine feed guides are attached to the table.
But then the issue was resolved at the manufacturer level, and everyone agreed that this was due to improper transportation of the machines. Main technical characteristics of Bosch gts10 xc

The Best Cordless Circular Saws

People who do not know how to choose a circular saw with a battery should pay attention to the following circular saws:

  • AEG BKS 18BL-0. Equipped with a disk with a diameter of 19 cm. The rotation speed of the circle is 3500 rpm.
  • Makita HS301DWAE. The saw has a 2 Ah battery. This is enough for 4 hours of work.
  • BOSCH UniversalCirc 120. The most compact model, which weighs only one and a half kilograms. Used when cutting small planks.

Additional Information! Most battery models last 3-4 years. Then you will have to replace the battery with a new one.

What should you pay attention to?

When choosing a tool, it is very important to pay attention to the depth of cut and the speed of the blade. The cutting depth is selected depending on the material being worked with, for example, the thicker the wooden block, the greater the required cutting depth. The quality of the processed surface depends on the rotation speed: the higher the rotation speed of the disk, the better the surface of the workpiece.

After a high-quality cut, the surface will not need to be further processed. It is also worth paying attention to the tool manufacturer. Large manufacturers seriously monitor product quality. Before purchasing, be sure to consider the engine power. For home work, saws with an 800 W motor are suitable, while for professionals, machines with motors from 1200 W are suitable. It is necessary to immediately pay attention to the parameters of parts that must be replaced over time. For example, the mounting diameter of the cutting disc.

The best mini circular saws

Makita HS301DWAE is suitable for cutting dense wood.
To work with small boards, you can use the following models of mini circular saws:

The best hand-held circular saws

The following manual circular saws are especially popular among buyers:

  • Makita HS7601 - Used for vertical or 45 degree cuts only.
  • Interskol DP-190/1600M is a budget model with soft start and power control.
  • Makita 5008MG - uses a 1.5 kW engine, spins the disk up to 5500 rpm.

Many people face problems when purchasing a new circular saw. Before you buy such a tool, you need to understand what a circular saw is and which model to choose for your home.

Which Circular To Choose For Installation On The Table

Which circular machine to choose

?

When size matters, 235mm circular saws are the way to go. A very experienced carpenter got the opportunity to test five hand-held circular saws to find out which one is truly the best. The test was conducted by Paul Boa, who works as a carpenter building houses in Bensonwood, New Hampshire. What kind of circular

Should I
choose
from a professional point of view? I remember how, while still a student in Canada, I went to a local store to buy my first circular paper in my life. I was very interested in carpentry and at that moment I had just read a book by a famous carpenter named Ted Benson, where it was written that there was only one best circular saw for sawing beams, and I was going to buy that one. According to Ted Benson, that saw was the 210mm Skil circular saw that I still use to this day.

Today I work side by side with the man who wrote this book. In our work, we constantly use circular saws with a saw blade

from 130 to 405 mm, but most often we use 235 mm circular saws - both in the workshop and directly on construction sites. They are absolutely indispensable in carpentry. We use them for cutting grooves when joining frame elements, making precise straight cuts when unraveling boards, and trimming various elements of a wooden structure. I want the circular to be light, neat, and easy to adjust. It must also be strong and powerful, able to cope with sheet material, frames, sheathing, roof rafters and other complex structures. The circular saw must also cut along the grain, across the grain, make through plunges and cuts at different angles.

Test criteria for circular saws

I tested 5 models of circular saws: Bosch 1656, DeWalt DW384, Hitachi C8, Makita 5008NB and Milwaukee 6405-6. I made cuts in each of them in a 50 mm board at an angle of 90 and 45 degrees to check their adjustment, the convenience of the protective casing and the accuracy of the cut. I also paid attention to the rigidity of the attachment of the sole to the body of the circular. In addition, I was interested in the power of the saws, which I tested by cutting through 5 sheets of OSB (oriented strand board) 100 mm thick, laid on top of each other. In addition, I assessed the balance and feeling of operation in order to conclude which of these circular saws I myself would be willing to use all day.

Testing circular saws at work

Overview of the cut Regardless of the angle of inclination

saw blade, I like to have a clear view of the cutting line. The winners in this category were Hitachi and DeWalt - they have the best view of the cut both when the blade is tilted at 90 and 45 degrees. The most unsuccessful from this point of view was the Milwaukee circular.

Footsaw To make straight cuts with neat angles, circular saws must have a rigid, flat foot that is well secured to the body of the tool. The Milwaukee has an aluminum sole and is attached to the body at just one point. At the same time, most of it remains free and moves under the influence of loads during sawing.

READ Makita JR3050T

The DeWalt saw has a cast aluminum base and is secured to the body at two points: a large rivet on the front and a pin on the back. I found this mount to be quite rigid and very comfortable to use. It allows you to have your hands free in order to better control the saw.

model has a fastening rod in the front part of the sole, and a movable fastening, ensuring ease of sliding, in the rear part. The sole itself is made of stamped steel. I checked the sole with a steel square, and it turned out that the lower part of the sole was not completely flat - the discrepancy was 2-3 mm, which, in my opinion, is still too much. Hitachi has the same mounting system: a front rod at the front, a movable mount at the back, and a metal sole - of all the saws it turned out to be the stiffest and flattest.

When I took the DeWalt out of the box, the soleplate was slightly offset from the saw blade.

by about 3 mm (i.e. the working hole for the saw blade was not parallel to the blade itself). I used the adjustment system to make it fit. However, after adjusting the soleplate, I began to experience discomfort when setting the soleplate for miter cuts. Then I decided that I had gotten a low-quality circular saw, but the same story repeated itself with another saw. Luckily this problem only bothered me when I was doing a power test and cutting with the guide bar. But during all other work, the saw behaved perfectly, even though the sole deviated slightly from the cutting line.

Video about choosing a router.

Bevel Adjustment All saws except the Milwaukee have similar bevel . Milwaukee uses a locking lever that snaps into slots located on a semi-circular guide where the angle of inclination is indicated. All other saws also have angle , using pins in the front and rear, and locking levers/buttons. This dual bevel adjustment system works better and all saws appear to be equally rigid at first glance.

All models we tested can make cuts at a 45-degree angle. The tilt angle of the DeWalt circular saw is adjustable up to 50 degrees, Bosch - up to 60 degrees. These additional features are very helpful when working with roof rafters. All models have a 90 degree quick return function - special set screws that allow you to quickly return the saw blade back to the 90 degree position. This feature is very convenient if you constantly need to alternate between straight cuts and angled cuts.

All circular saws are marked in 5° increments, but the DeWalt is marked in 1° increments.

Marking the cutting depth The only circular saw that does not have cutting depth markings is Makita. Milwaukee has markings, but they are indicated only by a stroke, without numbers. Bosch has

markings corresponding to the standard board size: the blade is adjusted to penetrate 6 mm into the wood. deeper than the thickness of the standard board applied to the markings.

Hitachi and DeWalt scales are marked for the actual depth of cut. I myself had never used a cutting depth mark before, but it turned out that it was very convenient for cutting grooves and grooves.

Replacing a circular saw blade Replacing the disk is approximately the same for all models. They have a spindle lock which makes changing the saw blade very easy. The Bosch saw has a feature that the manufacturer calls Vari-Torque Clutch - as described in the instructions, it allows the blade to change angle when there is excessive resistance in order to reduce the tendency of the saw to kick back. This feature requires the spindle nut to be properly tightened to prevent the blade from slipping during normal cutting. In order to prevent the disk from moving, I had to tighten the spindle very tightly - I think that the design of this mount could have been further worked on.

Electrical Except for the Milwaukee, all the circulars we tested are double insulated.

Having easy access to the brushes to replace them (without having to disassemble the device) is very convenient. All saws have this function except Bosch, which requires disassembling the body to replace the brushes.

All saws had a comfortable cord length, but I found the Milwaukee's cord to be too thick.

I really liked the quick stop function of the saw blade.

for DeWalt circular saws, the electric brake of the blade stops the disc in about 3 seconds. This feature will not prevent kickback, but it can prevent other damage when using the power saw, because A disc with a brake stops much faster.

Balance and Ergonomics The feel of a power tool is very subjective. For example, I like the handles of a circular saw to be spread quite wide apart - this gives me more control over the tool. I also like the handles to be wide enough to accommodate larger hands and mounted as low as possible - this gives me a stable platform in the event of a kickback.

I really enjoyed working with the DeWalt: the large handles combined with the relatively light weight of the saw make this tool very comfortable to work with. The Bosch saw also has very comfortable handles, but they are mounted higher. Makita and Hitachi circular saws have smaller handles, but the tools themselves are lighter - this is especially nice at the end of a hard day at work. But the Milwaukee handles did not seem very comfortable to me.

Protective casing The protective casings on some models of circular saws have given me a lot of problems. On the Makita, it oscillates too much from side to side, and when cutting at an angle of 45 degrees, it hits the board. With the Milwaukee, the casing did not want to rise when I wanted to see how the blade followed the markings when cutting to full depth at an angle of 45 degrees. Bosch has a shroud guide that is located near the front handle. It allows you to control the casing even with your dominant hand without removing it from the handle. However, I was never able to get the guard back on with one hand—I had to let go of the saw to put the guard back on the blade with my other hand. On the other saws the guard worked great.

READ Pendulum Type Combination Miter Saw

Power, Speed and Vibration To test power, I loaded the saws to the limit. I laid 5 sheets of OSB (oriented strand board) 100mm thick. on top of each other, put the same brand new saw blade on each saw and used a guide bar to make the cut as straight as possible. Then I cut without stopping the blade through the entire stack of sheets - working as fast as the saw would allow me. I made 3 cuts with each circular saw and calculated the average time required for one cut. I expected that more powerful circular saws would be more efficient in their work, but it turned out that this is not at all necessary.

The slowest was the 1,600-watt Bosch circular saw - it took 27 seconds. It was hard to keep along the line of the tire, and it vibrated too much when I pressed on it. The DeWalt and Makita saws took 24 and 25 seconds respectively to cut, and they also vibrated a lot. The fastest was the Milwaukee model. She showed a very impressive result - 20 seconds, stayed on the line very well and hardly vibrated. Without a doubt, the Milwaukee has proven to be a very powerful saw. However, the race favorite was the Hitachi, despite the power of 1,400 W - it made the cut in 22 seconds, was the softest and held perfectly along the guide bar line.

Circular test winners

It was very difficult to determine the winner in all respects in this test. I hesitated for a very long time, but in the end I decided to choose the Hitachi model - not because of any one characteristic, but because of the overall performance results. It's not the most powerful saw I've tested, it doesn't make cuts at angles greater than 60 degrees, and its handles are a little small for my taste. However, this is one of the lightest circular saws, it came second in the race through OSB, while making a very soft cut and giving a good view of the cutting line. Another plus is that it has the smoothest and stiffest sole, and in general the instrument is of very good workmanship. I really liked this saw.
