The construction of wooden housing in our great power has been developed since ancient times. First of all, this is caused by colossal reserves of this environmentally friendly and relatively inexpensive material. Despite the emergence of a lot of new construction technologies, classic log houses still remain popular. After all, the advantages of rounded logs are obvious, and they will be discussed further.

Why exactly a log?
First, let's find out what a rounded log is and why the vast majority of people prefer to build housing from it.
Important: speaking in the dry language of definitions, a rounded log is usually called a straight tree trunk, pre-processed on woodworking machines to give it the correct cylindrical shape. As a result, the top uneven layer and knots are removed, and compensation and mounting grooves are applied.
Scheme of a rounded log.
Advantages of the material
- Wood itself has a natural porous structure, as a result of which it is one of the best heat and sound insulators.
- All trunks have a clearly fixed diameter; the maximum deviation here can be no more than 2 mm. This makes it possible to select scaffolding for the construction of premises for various purposes with specified characteristics.
- At the moment, there is simply no building material that is more environmentally friendly and beneficial for people. Unlike wood, traditional brick or modern types of building materials can only boast of environmental neutrality.
Having clear geometric dimensions, this material fits perfectly together. Specially designed grooves ensure high tightness and quality of inter-crown seams.
- Although the price of rounded logs may be higher than that of many competitors, such houses do not require additional internal and external cladding. This material itself has natural beauty, as a result of which owners save significantly on finishing.
- Modern woodworking equipment makes it possible to initially produce trunks with ready-made connecting elements. This significantly speeds up the construction process and gives a lot of layout options.
- You may have already heard that natural wood breathes. This means the ability of the array to take excess moisture from the air and release it when conditions change. Simply put, wood is a natural air conditioner, providing an ideal microclimate for human life in the house.
- And finally, the construction instructions are quite accessible. A good owner, with a strong desire, can build a simple bathhouse, barn or small country house with his own hands.
Some product characteristics.
What are the disadvantages
- As we have already said, wood is a living material, so over time the wood begins to dry out and crack. This is true, but thanks to modern impregnations and primers for wood, such processes can be significantly slowed down.
- Many people know that during the process of growth, a tree trunk slightly twists in a spiral. After the cut, this spiral sometimes begins to unwind. This is why craftsmen do not recommend building from freshly cut timber; the structure may fail. But a dry rounded log does not have this drawback.
- Disadvantages such as high fire hazard and susceptibility to biological pests are easily eliminated using the same specialized impregnations.
- Perhaps the only significant drawback of any wooden structure is the high percentage of shrinkage of new houses. Well-dried, high-quality wood shrinks up to 100 mm for every 3 - 4 m of wall in the first year. And 10 - 20 mm each for another 2 - 3 years. Freshly cut timber will take up to 10 years to shrink.
Design of a wooden house made of logs
Rounded logs are a beautiful material and are in great demand among designers as a finishing material; it is not without reason that various types of block houses made of wood, vinyl and other materials are popular. But the final design of the walls, the method of finishing them, and what the interior of the house made of rounded logs will be like is decided by the owner. Therefore, if there is a need for this, then almost any finishing material can be used.
Most often, decorating walls involves the use of various stains and varnishes, which are used both to change the original color of the log and give it greater depth, and with a protective function. In this case, the interior remains wooden, and it sets the design style. This option is used for both facade and interior walls.
But it is quite acceptable to decorate a wooden house in modern styles, even high-tech is no exception.
For this purpose, sheets of plasterboard are used, with which all surfaces are sheathed.
And then the walls can be plastered, covered with wallpaper, covered with tiles or other decorative materials. But it should be noted that such finishing of a log house is relevant only for interior spaces.
As a finishing option, you can use various types of linings and siding; the installation of hinged ventilated facades is allowed, but in this case, the issues of improving the operational characteristics of the house are solved first of all, rather than aesthetic ones. First of all, this relates to thermal insulation properties, since in this case it is possible to lay an additional layer of thermal insulation material.
Interior of a house made of rounded logs
It is more logical for the floors to be natural, but if the design of a wooden house made of logs inside involves the implementation of a modern interior design, then in this case the appropriate floor covering is selected, including linoleum and tiles.
Construction of houses from timber with your own hands. - there is more useful information here.
And in order to make a wooden house very cozy and warm, it is easy to make a “warm floor”. For a large cottage, even at the design stage, you can consider the possibility of installing a water-heated floor. And if it is needed only in a few rooms, then the best option is infrared film floors, which are absolutely safe to use and have high efficiency.

Ceiling decoration in a wooden house
If the interior supports a natural wooden style, then there can be two options for decorating the ceilings: use finishing materials made of wood, including leaving it in its original form, without any finishing, or install tension ones, which, despite their manufacturability, turn out to be very organic in this case.
In cases where there is a desire to visually increase the height of the ceilings, you can use the coffered type, which is characterized by the presence of a beam ceiling, including imitation of it, rosettes, patterns, etc. As a rule, this technique is relevant for a rustic style in the interior .
Naturally, plasterboard is also used in finishing, which is used not only for cladding, but also for creating multi-tiered designer ceilings. In the future, it lends itself to almost any type of decoration: painting, wallpapering, decorative panels.
We can conclude that the construction of houses from rounded logs does not at all limit the design possibilities for its design, but, on the contrary, expands them.
In a country house, it is quite possible to use different types of design, for example, in the children's room and bedroom, make a more modern ergonomic design, and in the living room, dining room and recreation room, leave it authentic. But in any case, wood, as the main material for building a house, will set the tone.
What affects performance
To determine the basic parameters of the material, there is a set of regulations. In our country this is GOST 2708-75, in the west ISO 4480-83. There is no big difference between them, the main parameters are identical. It is on this data that a program such as a calculator for rounded logs of volume, weight, density and other characteristics is based.
Array volume table.
Advice: it is desirable that the table of volume of rounded logs be original, that is, taken from the above-mentioned regulatory documents. Since now there are many corporate tables compiled taking into account the commercial interests of some corporations and containing inaccuracies that are beneficial specifically for those who compiled them.
Machines and equipment
Even 50 - 100 years ago, every carpenter or just a good owner knew how to round a log at home. Due to the fact that this occupation is long and very labor-intensive, with the development of woodworking production there are not many real specialists left.
Of course, in the debate about whether a log or a rounded log is cheaper, an ordinary unprocessed trunk wins. But building a good house or a high-quality bathhouse from “wild” material is almost impossible. Apart from the time spent on handicraft cylindering and labor-intensive installation, you will not be able to seal the seams and joints hermetically. Accordingly, the room will be cold and will not last long.
Pricing Features
The price depends on the location of extraction, quality of processing, type of wood, humidity.
The price of lumber per cubic meter depends on the diameter. Approximately: 180 – 190 mm – 7500 rubles, 220 – 230 mm – 7800 rubles, 260 mm – 8000 rubles, 300 mm – 9500 rubles, 320 mm – 11000 rubles.
Price varies depending on factors:
- presence of a diagonal groove;
- type of packaging (film, pallet, tape);
- making holes for installing dowels;
- milling space for window and door trim;
- milling of recesses for installation of window and door fillings;
- impregnation with protective agents.
The final cost is affected by the delivery price . If construction is carried out in steppe regions, delivery will significantly increase the cost of the material.
Functions
The main function that any rounding machine has is the processing of logs as a body of revolution by milling. But to assemble a log house, simply cylindrical blanks are not enough. And in this case, additional equipment capabilities will come to the rescue:
- excavation of grooves to form various locking connections;
- production of parquet dies, timber;
- sawing of linear products;
- sawing timber into carriages and then into edged boards;
- all stages of log rounding, from roughing to final;
- removal of mounting bowls and compensation grooves.
In this case, the log itself is not reinstalled, but cutters and individual components are changed during the work. The result is parts with a wide range of diameters. The limitation concerns the length of the processed logs: the sleds are designed for seven-meter workpieces. A skillful combination of cutters and working techniques allows you to produce complex wooden structures.

Gazebos
You can build a cozy gazebo. Relatives and friends will gather there for holiday celebrations. Relax in the shaded gazebo on warm evenings and on hot days.
You can equip the gazebo in different ways: install a table with benches, supply electricity, install a barbecue or grill, supply water, etc.
The cost of a gazebo made of natural wood consists of the cost of the material, the complexity of the design, and the internal arrangement. The price of a gazebo starts from $300 per 1m2.
Well
If the site allows, if it is not possible to supply running water to the log house, then you can install a well. From such a well you will get crystal clear, healthy water.
Choosing log diameter
Rounding of logs means sorting, milling on a machine to cut soft layers of wood. The diameter of the logs is equalized along the length, with a difference of 4 mm between the two ends allowed. Secondary screening and drying of logs is carried out using a natural method or in chambers. Sometimes a compensation cut is made in the body of the lumber.
There are no uniform standards that control the parameters of rounded timber and the correctness of the technology. Large factories independently develop production conditions and standards for their enterprise, taking into account valid GOSTs of national significance. The documents specify the requirements for dimensions, quality, storage and transportation conditions.
The diameter is important when choosing lumber, because it determines the thermal conductivity and strength of the walls. They produce cross-sectional sizes from 160 to 320 mm; rounded logs with a diameter of 240 mm are very popular.
The parameters are selected depending on the purpose of the building and its location:
- dacha, garage, summer house in the south of Russia 160 - 180 mm, in the European part - 200 mm;
- permanent residence house, guest buildings, dachas in the European part - 220 mm, in western Siberia - 260 - 320 mm;
- in the North, housing with additional insulation is 260 – 280 mm.
The working height indicator of the product shows the number of vertical crowns to the roof. Measure from the top point in the section to the groove top. The type of groove matters. The working height of a log with a lunar passage with a cross-section of 240 mm is 208 mm, and in a product with a Finnish groove - 190 mm.
Compensation cutting reduces stress inside the log and prevents the appearance of cracks. The depth of 15 - 20 mm depends on the cross-section of the material.
Profiled timber
Building a log house from profiled, specially prepared timber is quite simple. The structure is assembled quickly when compared with the construction of log houses.
Photo 2 – Log house built from profiled timber
The cost of profiled timber that already has cups starts at $300. The cost increases due to the increase in the dimensions of the timber.
Advantages
Profiled timber is produced on milling machines. The advantages of this material are that the smooth surface of the correct shape allows you to lay the beams evenly with minimal gaps.
Device
The installation has several main components. The bed is made in the form of a metal frame. It can have a rigid welded connection in the form of a rectangular pipe or a mobile connection of individual metal elements using bolts and nuts. It is the basis for fastening all structural elements.
The rounding machine contains guides along which the sawing tool moves. They usually form a single structure with a metal frame. In certain types of installations, the log moves along guides.
There may be one or two (front and back) headstocks. Their purpose is to secure and twist the log. On the headstock in some models of machines there is a dividing head, which serves to set a certain angle of rotation for different stages of processing.
The unit for fastening tools and moving mechanisms is a caliper.
The main purpose of the cutter is to fasten the cutting tool. It also provides reduced vibration, increased accuracy of operations and ease of entry into the workpiece. There are shaped and universal cutters.
The knives of the rounding machine are made of high grade steel. The cutting tool is attached to the cutter so that it can be easily replaced or removed for sharpening.
In addition, additional elements are installed. These are levers that make it easy to install the workpiece on the frame, and stop rollers that prevent it from sagging. There are also brakes and a carriage lock. They are used in machines with the function of removing the crown bowl and are installed at the end of the carriage. To excavate a longitudinal groove, a log rotation regulator is used.
Modern manufacturers of woodworking equipment equip such rounding machines with automated computer-controlled modules.
Video description
Without knowing the technology of building a house, it is easy to make many mistakes. About them in the video:
Foundation
The main and most important element of any building is the foundation. Its depth and character depend on the soil on which the house will stand, on the nature of the wall material and on the number of storeys.
A log house is relatively light in weight. This design quality allows the foundation to be shallow. Almost all options for existing types of foundations are suitable for constructing a log house. Often they make a tape version. For difficult soils, a deep strip foundation or a pile foundation is used. You can also make a slab version.
It is worth noting that any version of the foundation should go 300-400 mm into the ground. After pouring it and completely drying, it is necessary to carry out waterproofing (roofing felt with mastic). This is a very important process despite the fact that the house is made of logs.
If a strip foundation is used, it begins with the arrangement of formwork Source bel-dom-stroy.ru
When the foundation is ready, they begin laying the walls Source fabrikadomov.by
Walling
Upon completion of the foundation laying stage, they move on to the main thing - the construction of walls. It is important to know that the first crown (the first row of logs) is never placed directly on the foundation. First, a “backing” board is laid. It is made from linden timber 50-100 mm thick and at least 150 mm wide. Then they move on to assembling the walls from the rounded log house.

The first mortgage crown must be cut from below. Its end should match the width of the backing board. This is necessary so that the house rests firmly on the foundation.
Logs for walls are laid in circles (crowns). First, logs are laid that are parallel to each other. Then the other two sides, and insulation is laid on top. It is attached to the log using a construction stapler and should hang down at the edges by 5 cm.
Then the transverse sides of the house are laid, which will rest on the mortgage crown. And we repeat the “procedure” of assembling the house like a construction set.

Classification
Experts propose to classify rounding machines according to five parameters:
- type of mechanism;
- the method of moving the log;
- level of automation;
- drive power type;
- diameter of the workpiece used (minimum – 80 m, maximum – 500 m).
Two types of mechanisms are used in installations. The first is a pass-through (rotary) one, which allows you to continuously move the wood through the cutter. The second is cyclic (turning), in which processing is performed by repeating a cycle of actions.
If cyclic actions are performed by a cutting tool, the machine is classified as a cyclo-pass type, and if a log moves, it is classified as a cyclo-positional type. In the mechanisms, logs have the ability to both rotate and move rectilinearly along the guides.
Recommendations before purchasing
For the chosen level of productivity, it is important to consider the degree of automation of the rounding machine.
In mechanized models, the operator loads and unloads logs, configures and adjusts the mechanisms. He also monitors the quality of work performed at all stages of operations.
In automated rounding machines, the specialist servicing it is assigned the role of process controller.
In semi-automated installations, the master joins the process after the machine has completed one cycle of operations.
Note! To create optimal and uninterrupted operating conditions, it is important to select the appropriate type of drive power supply.
Electric can work without interruption, provided that the power lines are reliable or there is an additional power generator. Gasoline requires constant refueling, but does not depend on external factors.
But the main choice is between pass-through and loop types. The pass-through will provide high productivity, sometimes at the expense of the quality of processing. Most models of such machines do not have the ability to make the surface of the log smooth, without burrs and roughness. Cyclic installations work much slower, but at the same time they have a number of advantages:
- provide very high quality processing;
- perform the entire set of operations;
- have compact dimensions;
- The design is stable and easy to maintain.
Stage 7. Doors and window openings
We specifically started talking about openings after construction was completed, since there are two options for their arrangement.
Installation of a casing for installing windows and doors in a log house
- In the first case, holes are created after the completion of construction work. At the same time, in the crowns located in the places of future openings, first leave small gaps (the dimensions of the latter depend on the size of the mounted products). Once you've finished laying the logs, simply cut the openings with a chainsaw.
- In the second case, leave openings during the construction process. This is very labor-intensive and expensive, since you will use bars with notches at the ends and special grooves.

Stages of designing a machine yourself
Purchasing a professional installation for producing processed wood is an expensive proposition. But there is an alternative solution: you can make a machine for rounding logs with your own hands.
A sawmill is used as the base. The cone in the front part is replaced with a stop. A bearing is inserted into the tailstock. You will also need an electric motor to ensure the torsion of the log. The rotation can be manual, then you need to make a handle.
The cutter is assembled as a separate unit from a very durable material. Its movement can be ensured by laying rails. This is the path along which the cutter will move. In this design, the workpiece must be positioned along the rail and rotated so that the cutter slides along it.
Before installing the rounding machine, concreting (if not available) or compacting the area of the required size is carried out. Next, the frame sections are assembled and leveled in the horizontal plane. The maximum installation error should not exceed 0.5 mm per 1 m in all directions. Installation height 20 cm.
The subsequent assembly steps are as follows:
- installation of the power mechanism;
- installation of the front and rear headstocks so that their axes coincide and are parallel to the guides;
- fastening racks for cables for mobile power cables;
- cable tension;
- clamp-stop equipment for the power mechanism;
- grounding installation;
- connecting the motor and checking the direction of rotation of the lumber. The desired direction is regulated by changing the order of connecting the motor phases;
- mounting a shaped cutter on a conical part using bolts;
- screwing a universal cutter into the body of a figured cutter. In order to avoid imbalance, the knot is tightened with a wrench;
- checking for correct assembly.
A homemade machine requires preventive maintenance if it is idle for a long time or installed in a damp room.
The construction of a private house, cottage, or residential log house requires high-quality timber, which is processed using professional equipment. For technical buildings, you can round the wood yourself.
Operation and care
At production sites, the production of finished logs can be up to 800 m per work shift. At home, this is hardly possible, and it is not necessary. To get several pieces of high-quality CBs for future construction per day, follow the rules of safe operation and carry out timely preventive maintenance. So:
- After a long period of inactivity, you cannot immediately cut and trim logs; it is important to warm up the machine for rounding the log, check the condition of the cutter, lubricate all moving parts, and inspect critical parts for corrosion. The insulation of the power cable should not cause any complaints; rodents can feast on it. The reliability of the suspensions should also be high.
- Before putting the machine into operation, it should be tested: at idle, under load (a short period is used for this), for a while. If the result is satisfactory: the quality has not been lost, the time has been met, the parts have not failed, then they carefully begin work, having first cleared the machine of chips.
- During operation, a common cause of failure is the heating of the bearings; do not allow the temperature to rise above 60 degrees. If there is no cooling system, then the problem is solved by installing a fan or working with the doors open. You can determine overheating yourself.
- A factory unit always has oil baths, into which the proper level is poured and checked with a dipstick; a makeshift unit will have to be constantly lubricated. For this purpose, industrial liquid oil and grease are chosen for hard-to-reach places. Change waste material at least once every 3 months. Together with it, clogged dust, dirt and shavings are removed.
Perform routine and major repairs on a homemade log rounding installation in a timely manner. In the first option, complete disassembly may not be necessary if prevention was carried out on time. At this stage, bearings, bolts, fasteners are replaced, the sharpness of cutting tools is checked and, if necessary, they are changed.
Major repairs are carried out only by the efforts of an electric motor service specialist and an assembler. That is, the power unit is removed and sent to the workshop. Doing something yourself, in the absence of knowledge and experience, is not recommended. You can only replace the bearings on the rotating shaft yourself.
Your own rounded machine will bring benefits to its owners only when the decision to assemble a sawmill for the production of central fiber boards is verified from all sides - this is a lot of work that requires responsibility. In addition, you cannot expect great productivity from a do-it-yourself rounding machine, so take a closer look at used equipment.

Self-production of a rounding machine for wood processing
Since ancient times, humanity has used trees to build housing. This material is widespread, does not require complex preparation and retains heat well. Nowadays, wood can be subjected to any treatment to give the desired shape to the log. To obtain even logs with the same cross-sectional area, rounding machines are used.
This installation allows for various wood processing operations:
- Wood rounding.
- Making grooves.
- Production of edged boards.
- Obtaining elements for parquet.
- Trimming boards.
- Production of timber.
- Milling smooth logs.
- Sawing wood onto a carriage.
Rounding machines are used in sawmills, large industries and in private households. The main function of the equipment is to remove the top layer of wood using a milling cutter and various types of knife tools.
Types of rounding equipment
Depending on the technology, the log rounding machine is divided into:
- Passage – carries out wood processing while moving, without stopping.
- Cyclic – when processing wood, the movement of the log is interrupted. The movement pattern is a cycle of operations.
- And also cyclic installations are classified into two subtypes:
- Cyclo-positional - material processing occurs in the process of advancement relative to the tool
- Cyclo-passing - wood is subjected to woodworking with a tool that itself makes the necessary movements.
According to the mechanism of operation, the machines are divided into:
- Mechanical - require the presence of an operator who adjusts modes, configures, loads and unloads equipment.
- Automatic - the entire processing scheme is carried out by a machine. There are models where a person only needs to load the material.
- Semi-automatic - the installation automatically performs only one cycle of operations, and then the person must start the mechanism again.
A machine for rounding logs in the case of a separate type gives different productivity. Pass-through equipment is more productive, but inferior in terms of correct processing and the formation of pronounced roughness of the material.
Factory production
Today, log cylindering is carried out using high-precision equipment in one cycle of processing natural unbarked logs. Such technical innovations are not cheap, but they are fully justified - owners of forestry and house-building businesses confirm a sevenfold payback. Beginning entrepreneurs are not able to immediately acquire the innovations of progress, and therefore they use the following types of devices:
- Lathe-type rounding machine. Operating principle: clamping of parts, rotation along the axis, movement of the cutter along the entire length of the wood. The advantages of this type of equipment: exceptional shape without curvature, production of a large diameter - this is extremely necessary for winter and multi-story construction, decorative processing - to obtain material of an unusual shape.
- Turning-rotary type. The log remains in the clamp, but there is no rotation around its axis; the milling unit moves along and around the workpiece. The popularity is due to the following advantages:
- calibrated precise diameter thanks to the installed ring;
- elimination of curvature;
- high-quality processing.
- Pass-through type. Mainly used for molding small diameter barrels - up to 240 mm. The cutter assembly remains stationary, the workbench feeds the workpiece, where it goes through a full processing cycle.
You cannot do without disadvantages: constant support and control, otherwise the errors in diameter are significant, and the processing leaves much to be desired - the grinding is not up to par, the productivity is low, the process is slow and such a machine for logs is not suitable for serious production.
Equipment of this type has found its application at home to produce material for one’s own needs during individual construction. It is used to cut logs for the construction of bathhouses, gazebos, fences and other small objects in the yard. Cost from 960 thousand rubles.
Along with energy consumption, the following disadvantages are considered: low productivity and constant monitoring - the machine is large and the frame is poorly strengthened, which threatens with high vibration, which results in a risk for the operator. Price – 1,400,000 rubles.
Advantages: coincidence of units in cross-section, thorough grinding, production of lengths - blanks of more than standard length of 6 m, cutting of lumber. Disadvantages: curvature when long, uneven laying groove and change in the width of the compensation cut. However, the disadvantages are eliminated by constant regulation and control. Cost up to 2 million rubles.
Each of the machines requires a special room for the smooth shipment of finished products and the availability of maintenance and repair personnel. Therefore, private farms prefer to set up home-made equipment that produces high-quality rods for self-assembly of a log house.
Homemade installations
To ensure that homemade log rounding is not inferior in quality to production, assemble your own mechanism according to all the rules, take into account all safety issues, otherwise, in the absence of experience, the risk of breakdown or health hazard increases. The requirements for a homemade installation are as follows:
- The bed must be large. Weight up to 1 ton does not provide proper stability: vibration appears and the barrel can simply fly off, and this is dangerous.
- Enough space in the garage or utility room is not a whim, but an achievement of convenience and safety in work: you can freely carry the crops and lay them down for processing. If there is still not enough space, then a rotor-type mechanism is purchased or designed, where the length remains fixed.
- The installation site is concreted according to all the rules: depreciation, reinforcement, formwork, pouring. The finished platform is kept for at least three weeks. If you install the mechanism on the ground, then its behavior in the future will be unpredictable, and operation will become unsafe.
- The finished unit is checked by balancing the cutting tool. Violation of this rule may result in breakdown of the entire machine or deterioration in the quality of the product.
To assemble a homemade machine for rounding logs, it is important to have similar experience and understanding of the operation of each unit. Otherwise, the electrically driven mechanism will become dangerous.
Features of the design of machines for cylindering
The installation consists of main blocks - a metal frame, headstock and tailstock, cutters. Typically, square pipes with guides for the movement of the load-bearing structure and carriage serve as the frame. Headstocks are required to secure the log in the central part and to push for rotational actions.
The main running tools are cutters. They provide easy entry into the wood, reducing vibration and increasing accuracy. They come in universal and curly shapes. The universal cutter is used for classical rounding, milling and sampling of crown cups. A shape cutter is used when making grooves.
The cutters are equipped with knives that can be removed. If the obtained log parameters do not match, the knives must be replaced. They are made of durable steel and are used for a long time.
Optimal diameter of logs in a house for permanent residence
To keep a house with an area of about 100 m2 warm in Russian latitudes, logs with a diameter of 220-240 mm are sufficient. For large houses over 200 m2, it is more rational to use a log of a larger cross-section - 240–280 mm.
The thermal insulation properties of the future log house wall largely depend on the parameters of the log: the larger the log in diameter, the fewer crowns will need to be laid, therefore, the fewer joints there will be - the main potential source of heat loss. Residents of such a house will not freeze in the cold or swelter in the heat in the summer and will be able to save on heating and purchasing air conditioners.
If we take into account the aesthetic side of the issue, then we need to focus on proportionality and a sense of proportion. A small log house made of thick logs will look more like a bunker than a fairy-tale tower, and a spacious cottage assembled from thin logs will give the impression of an amateur model of a princely mansion made from matches.
Selecting a machine for the production of rounded logs
To select a machine, you should not rely on advertised settings. It is necessary to evaluate the proposed samples well. Of course, it is useful to visit factories where such machines are used. Communication with direct equipment operators will bring good results when choosing an installation.
The following models are widely represented on the Russian market: Rus, Sherwood and Termite. Sherwood and Rus equipment can be separate components, or be part of a woodworking system. The volume of logs that passes through these installations is 24 cm. There are models that pass larger diameters. Such installations are used when processing various materials: birch, oak, ash, pine and others.
Of course, you can buy popular machines, but sometimes you have to modify them to suit your own needs. Therefore, a more practical way is sometimes to make a rounding machine with your own hands.
Independent production of a machine for working with wood
It is preferable to make a homemade rounding machine using a sawmill. To twist the log, an electric motor is used, which is installed additionally. Instead of the front conical part, a stop is made, the bearing for which is the headstock located at the rear.
The production of a cutter occurs by assembling the constituent elements. A rail is used to move the cutter. The installation is reminiscent of a milling machine, since the log is installed in the existing grooves, then torsion occurs. As a result, the cutter begins to move along the log.
A homemade rounding machine is mounted on a hard surface, preferably concrete. When making the frame, sleepers or thick timber are also used.
Stages of machine assembly:
- Assemble the frame using a level to position it in a stable, horizontal position. Typically the frame height reaches 20 cm.
- Mounting the power structure (front and rear headstocks), onto which the electrical cable fastening cable is pulled.
- Equipping power racks with a stopper.
- Providing grounding.
- Connecting a motor that causes the log to twist. In this case, you should focus on the exact connections of the phases. If connected incorrectly, the direction of the power head will not coincide with the direction of the buttons.
- Checking the direction of log torsion. If the direction is incorrect, the phases on the electric motor must be replaced. It should be remembered that until the power phases are correctly connected, rotational actions of the log and the engine are prohibited.
You should also secure the headstocks firmly, installing them simultaneously with the guides. The lines of movement of the rack axes should be similar. To do this, measure the exact length between the longitudinal profile and the central part of the post and between the nearest guide and the center of the headstock. These distances must be equal for both headstocks.
After all installation operations, you should check the correct assembly and horizontal frame.
After standing for a long time without using your machine or being in a damp room, you need to keep the installation in a dry room before starting it to remove excess moisture.

Design of Taiga belt models
The base for the sawmill can be a concrete platform or thick wooden beams laid on a flat area of dense soil. Rails are laid on the beams or prepared platform, which are rigidly fastened to each other. They also have a system for fastening the processed logs.
The rails can be extended with an additional section, making it possible to cut logs whose length can exceed 8 meters.
The sawmill frame can have a mechanical or electric drive for vertical movement and move along rails using support rollers in manual mode. The saw cut is removed manually by one or two auxiliary workers.
The sawing mechanism moves along a vertical plane using a double-row chain transmission simultaneously with the lowering/raising drive gearbox, and is controlled by a metric scale located on the frame. Thanks to this, the sawing mechanism is precisely adjusted in height and firmly fixed to the sawmill frame.
On the T-1 series sawmill, the sawing mechanism is moved manually by rotating the gearbox with a special handle. And on other machines, the vertical movement of the sawing mechanism is carried out by an automatic switch, but if there is a need to adjust the saw height, it is done using a manual closer.
The sawing mechanism is equipped with two balanced rollers (driver and driven) on which the cutting saw is fixed. The drive roller is driven by a belt drive from an electric motor pulley. The driven roller is attached to the tension system and rotates from the movement of the belt web.

The speed of movement of the band saw can increase with increasing diameter of the pulley, which can have a maximum value of 520-600 mm. At the same time, the quality of the cut surface of the log improves and the service life of the cutting blade increases.
After installing the band saw, its tension is carried out with a special wrench with a dynamometer. Tension control is carried out using a scale located on the dynamometer sensor mounted on the tension wrench.
Constant tension and prevention of vibration of the saw blade is carried out by calming rollers of the sawing mechanism. To prevent the saw blade from becoming pinched in the cut of the log, which can be caused by wood resin accumulated on the blade, the sawing machine is equipped with a special lubrication system. The system has a lubricant flow regulator, which simultaneously cools the cutting blade.
All moving and rotating parts of the sawmill are protected by a protective metal casing, and the machine is controlled through the sawmill keypad, which is installed on the sawing frame.
Advantages of a homemade machine
A do-it-yourself rounding machine has certain advantages:
- Low wood consumption.
- Obtaining material for any of your own needs.
- Achieving good quality of the resulting logs.
- Having a machine at hand.
Of course, like any purchased machine, homemade equipment requires the purchase of component parts. But processing wood using your own equipment turns out to be more suitable for the personal purposes of using the resulting log. Achieving certain technical properties of products occurs in the presence of home-made rounding equipment.
We make a wood milling machine for a home workshop
Milling machines are necessary for working with shaped wood parts. They are used for flat milling and profile processing. Professional equipment is multifunctional and costs a lot of money, so more and more “homemade” people are assembling such equipment for workshops and garages on their own.
Small DIY milling machine
The set of homemade wood milling machines includes:
- Drive mechanism. This is an engine whose power ranges from 1-2 kW. With such a motor, you can use various tools to work with wood without fear of failure.
- Lift for adjustment. Typically, it includes a body, sliding skids, carriages, a fixing screw and a threaded axle. During operation, the carriage moves up and down, and a screw is needed to fix it at the required level.
- Support. The table is made from solid wood.
Before assembly, be sure to draw up a detailed drawing with all dimensions. For manual wood milling machines, you need to think through everything in advance down to the smallest detail.
