Let's do without gasoline: rating of the best electric chainsaws 2022

Electric chainsaws emit no emissions, are less noisy and are lighter than gasoline ones. Thanks to this, they are convenient to use at home or in the country where there is an electricity supply. Also, an electric saw is cheaper than a gasoline or battery-powered analogue, so it is best suited for infrequent non-professional use. We have prepared for you a rating of electric chain saws for the dacha and divided it into two categories: up to 5,000 rubles and from 5,000 to 10,000 rubles. Everyone will be able to choose the right model for themselves according to their budget.

Criterias of choice

Engine location and power. The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a tool is the engine power. Not only performance, but also its durability depends on this parameter. If power surges in your electrical network occur quite often, it is better to choose a tool with sufficient power reserve. The engine of such a chain saw will not overheat when the voltage drops, delivering rated power. The engine power of household electric chain saws can vary between 1.5-2 kW, and professional ones – up to 3.5 kW. If the voltage is unstable, experts recommend choosing models equipped with a thermal control system that automatically turns off the tool. The thermal relay is activated when the temperature of the motor winding reaches the set threshold. But it is worth considering that if the unit is switched off too often in conditions of unstable voltage, the performance of the unit is also reduced.

If you focus on the location of the engine in the structure, it can be:

  • Transverse - the engine axis is perpendicular to the width of the unit, and its center of gravity is slightly shifted. When working with such a tool, you will have to constantly maintain balance. It is most comfortable to work with it in a vertical plane, when you make a cut from top to bottom.
  • Longitudinal - the design is a straight line in which all components are well balanced. This design solution ensures excellent balancing of the blade when turning, giving the tool greater maneuverability.

Saws with a transverse engine are designed for general use. The power of such tools ranges around 2 kW, and the weight does not exceed 4 kg. The absence of a protruding motor on the side simplifies the work of the tool, but increases the weight of the unit, the value of which can reach 6 kg. Due to the considerable weight, your hands will quickly get tired, and therefore such a tool will not be very convenient to operate for several hours of continuous work - this is worth taking into account.

Chain tension. Low-profile chains are used in the manufacture of electric saws. Although they have lower productivity, they are good because they expose the tool to less vibration, making it safer to use. Correct tension affects performance and safety of work, so during operation the chains of electric saws have to be tightened quite often

There are models on sale in two versions of chain tension:

  • Classic - to tension the chain, the screws securing the bars are loosened and carefully moved using a flat screwdriver. This is a rather painstaking method, time-consuming and requiring the necessary tools to be on hand.
  • Simplified - chain tension is achieved by loosening the nut and moving the bar using a slider.

The saw unit is lubricated automatically in modern models using an oil pump. The pump is activated simultaneously with the saw being turned on. This greatly simplifies the maintenance of the unit. The owner’s task is to monitor the level of oil fluid and add it as needed.

The presence of a lever on the side panel allows you to easily adjust the tension; the system is convenient because it does not require the use of special tools

Tire length. The working bar on which the chain is fixed can have various modifications. The length of the bar is directly related to the power of the tool. It can reach 30-45 cm. Considering that it is unlikely that thick logs will have to be cut on a country plot, a 40 cm long tire is considered the best option for household work. Tools with a longer tire will be much heavier, more powerful and, therefore, more expensive. The quality of the cut depends on the thickness of the cutting blade. For household tools, the standard tooth pitch is 3/8 inch: the thicker the chain, the more powerful the motor should be. Different types of chains and bars can be installed on saws from different manufacturers, depending on the performance of the tool. Over time, moving parts will wear out and require replacement. Therefore, to prevent future problems with finding parts, choose power tools with the most common type of chains.

Smooth start. Engine starting and braking systems are perhaps the most extreme operating modes of the unit. The reason for this is that at these moments shock doses of current pass through the motor winding, which significantly reduces its resources. The soft start system, which limits the starting current, greatly facilitates the work and protects the engine from extreme loads, allowing the motor to gain speed gradually. The soft start system extends the “life” of the unit. The presence of an inertia brake allows you to stop the motor in a split second when turning off the tool, thereby reducing energy consumption.

Safety. Any power saw for woodworking is a potentially dangerous tool. Therefore, when choosing a unit, it is so important to protect yourself from possible injuries while using the tool. When choosing a power tool, pay attention to whether it has an accidental start lock. It will protect you from danger if you do not comfortably grasp the tool with one hand or, after turning it on, find that you are not yet ready to work with it. Kickback can be a particular hazard when operating a chain saw. It occurs when the end of the bar comes into contact with a hard surface of the lumber, as a result of which the tool is thrown back sharply, and its moving chain can injure the operator. To prevent a “kickback”, modern models are equipped with an automatic brake system, which is a lever designed in the shape of a shield, located under the handle. The automatic brake is activated when the hand slips, when a “kickback” occurs: when pressure is applied to the shield, a spring is activated, which activates the brake and stops the chain.

Features of care

The main activities that you should regularly carry out from the moment you purchase a power saw are to maintain an oil level sufficient for the tool to operate effectively and the chain to be sharp. If your model does not have an automatic pump, then the saw bar is lowered into a bucket of oil after each job.

It is also necessary to promptly check the reliability of fastening of parts and the serviceability of electrical wiring. If the instrument behaves obediently in your hands , then this is a clear sign that everything is in order with it. A normally functioning electric saw does not require physical effort. However, in any case, you must maintain it in working condition - after finishing work, wash the chain, clean it of scorch and put it in a box.

DDE CSE2418

An engine with a power of 2.41 kW in combination with a 45-centimeter tire is an uncharacteristic phenomenon for the amateur segment. However, in practice, a decent reserve of power will not be superfluous: it is comfortable to saw, and the speed does not drop under load. Taking into account the significant starting current, it would be strange if this model did not have a soft start system: it really works, so in dacha areas with well-known problems with power supply, turning on the saw will not leave the owner and his neighbors without power. The manufacturer was concerned not only with power, but also with safety: in addition to thermal protection, the engine (although you have to try to overheat it) is also equipped with an automatic shutdown when the oil supply is clogged, so that a clogged channel will not leave the chain without lubrication. Unfortunately, the oil supply gets clogged quite quickly here, so cleaning the saw will become a habit if you use it actively. On the other hand, there is no risk of leaks when storing the saw with a filled tank - however, after purchase you will have to spend some time purging air from the system: for saws with a similar mechanism this is the norm, usually the oil begins to leak on its own... but it also flows after turning it off. Another plus is for the keyless chain tension: it won’t be difficult to adjust or replace the chain with a new one (and here there is a common 62-link chain with a pitch of 3/8).

Advantages

  • Power, bus length
  • Reliable protection against overheating and lack of lubrication
  • Easy chain adjustment

Flaws

  • The need to pump lubricant after long-term storage with an empty tank

Hyundai XE 2410

With its 40.5-centimeter tire and 2.4-kW engine, Hyundai does not suffer from a lack of performance: if a chain saw is purchased for large volumes of one-time work (for example, regularly collecting firewood for a private home), then this option will be interesting for its price. Here they used a more powerful motor and equipped the saw with a hitchhiking system when overloaded (with indication) and an SDS system for quick replacement and adjustment of chain tension. There is no need for a tool to remove the cover and adjust the tension - you just need to manually turn the large “twist” with your hand. It itself consists of two parts: the outer one sets the tension, the inner one fixes it. It’s all plastic, of course – but like all essentially current household electric saws, it’s “inexpensive.” But at least it is more difficult to tighten the chain by hand (and there is an opinion that many complaints about the flimsiness of the tension mechanisms in budget saws are caused precisely by the desire to “tighten from the heart”). The electric saw fits well in the hands, despite its weight (more than 5 kg of dry weight). The level of vibrations is low: the electric motor itself creates much less vibration than a gasoline engine, and the mass of the saw also dampens them. Plus rubberized handles – in general, it’s comfortable to work with. The oil tank is not very convenient for refilling, but in general there are no complaints about the oil supply itself: clean the saw on time, and there will be no interruptions in lubrication or leakage during storage.

Advantages

  • Quick chain tightening without tools
  • Power
  • Availability of soft start and overload protection

Flaws

  • Dislike of side load on the chain

KRÜGER ECSK 25-40

The Kruger electric saw has increased power and is perfectly balanced. The body of the instrument is reinforced and can easily withstand mechanical stress. The 2500 W motor provides the ability to work with the tool for a long time. The chain is made of high-alloy steel and has a long service life. The saw comes with a cover that protects the bar from damage. The Kruger electric saw has many useful features, such as automatic chain lubrication. This ensures convenient maintenance of the device and saves operator time. The accidental start lock function protects against injury.

Advantages

  • light weight – 5 kg
  • increased power
  • presence of chain brake
  • rich equipment

Flaws

  • slight noise during operation due to increased power

Popular manufacturers

Among the many brands of electric chainsaws, the most popular are Makita, Huter and Patriot. This does not mean that you should only buy tools from these manufacturers, but they are purchased more often.

Today, none of these companies can be said to be, for example, German or American. All these companies are global. Production facilities, design bureaus, sales offices, and service centers are located all over the world, including in the Russian Federation. However, everyone has their own national origin. Makita started in Japan, Patriot in the USA, Hooter in Germany.

The easiest way to understand which country a particular electric saw was made in is when purchasing a Makita tool. After the serial number on the nameplate there is a letter designation, which is deciphered according to the following table:

  • E – made in Japan.
  • R – Europe, Romania.
  • Y or K - made in China.
  • D – made in Germany.

Makita is also produced in the USA (letter A) and England (G). But Makita products are not supplied to Russian markets from these countries.

Today, production around the world is most often controlled by engineers and designers from these countries. Therefore, all brands still retain traditional Japanese miniature and thoroughness, German reliability, American rationalism and convenience.

Briefly about the main thing

An electric chain saw may have a battery or a cord for operation from the mains.

When choosing a power saw, the main user parameters remain size, weight, and availability of functional safety.

Among the foreign manufacturers of electric saws, the most notable are Makita, Bosch, and Husqvarna; among the domestic ones, Energomash, Zenit, and Interskol.

A transverse saw motor can make it cheaper, while a longitudinally mounted one makes it easier to use.

Storage Features

It often happens that for the winter the instrument is sent for storage in an unheated room. It is not recommended to do this with an electric saw, since due to condensation accumulated inside the tool, a short circuit may occur even during the first uses. This can be avoided by letting the instrument sit for several days in a warm, dry room in the spring.

to handle battery models very carefully If the temperature at the place where they are stored rises to 50 degrees Celsius, this may result in their failure. You should also ensure that the instrument is protected from direct sunlight.

Customer Reviews

Alexey Baramygin

BOSCH AKE 35 S

Before purchasing this unit, I read a bunch of reviews, reviews, and spoke with the owners. I had a contradictory opinion, so I decided to choose with my heart and a little with my head. The saw is needed for construction in the country, so the length of the bar was not very important, but the choice fell on the 35 bar because of the bearing at the end of the bar, which the same saw with a 30 cm bar does not have. Many saw owners complain about high oil consumption and a lot of oiled sawdust. I didn’t notice this, perhaps because I use chain oil, and not semi-synthetic automotive oil, like many people. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase. The volume of work performed is about 7 cubes of various materials (from lining and floorboards to edged and timber). In addition, I will say that my neighbor in the country, having a chainsaw (one of the Chinese brands) bought for the same money, resorts to mine for construction work. Good luck everyone. I strongly recommend the unit!!!

Huter ELS-2000P

I dismantled the hut and had to cut everything down. I started with a hacksaw, but realized that all this would take a very long time. I went to the store and asked the seller for an electric saw with a bar of 40 cm and a power of up to 2 kW. Gasoline was not needed because I have electricity, but I won’t go into the forest. They suggested this saw. After 2 days of intensive work, the original chain was stretched so that it was no longer possible to tighten it any further. I bought a suitable one (as they said in the store), I also tightened it several times and that’s it. The tensioner is not long enough. It's strange that when you install a new chain, the tensioner is already halfway through its tension position. It turns out that the chain is not even enough to sharpen. Pull it out and replace it with a new one. But the saw cuts well and quickly.

DeWALT DCM575X1

Advantages: I haven’t held other saws in my hands, so I can’t compare, but after two dozen trees, I don’t see any disadvantages. In addition to the meager capacity for oil, it is enough to charge the battery included in the kit. Disadvantages: Price of batteries. Because one is not enough. Comment: As always, there is almost no information on the internet. Therefore, I will write a little reality. The batteries included in the kit are enough for 3 dry Christmas trees, 30 cm at the base, to be felled and cut into logs of a meter and a half. If you forgot to add oil and there is only half left. And the tree we got was twisted, so it’s only enough for one and a half trees. Therefore, it is better not to take a kit. And separately the saw and separately the largest battery. The included charge is enough for the eyes. Charges in 2-3 hours. It doesn't need to be faster. It makes sense to immediately buy a second tire with a chain. If a tree pinches a tire and you don’t have a good handsaw with you, it will be a shame. And so, I unfastened the jammed tire, inserted the spare one, and you can continue sawing. As a cover, I bought a bag for underwater equipment 90*40*30 cm, waterproof, durable, and a lot of other things can fit in there. By the way, the kit includes a protective casing, although they don’t write about it anywhere.

BOSCH AKE 40 S

Advantages: High quality plastic, chain and fabric. Assembly - Hungary. Automatic chain lubrication. High power. Fits well in the hand. Additional blocking protection is installed in case of saw kickback. Disadvantages: the cord is short, but as the official Bosch store explained to me, this was done for safety reasons. Comment: Before this I had the simplest and most inexpensive Makita. Previously, it was necessary to pump oil through the canvas every 10 minutes using a separate pump button. The first plus is that you no longer have to bother with lubrication. The second and most important advantage was that everything is assembled and the chain is tensioned without a screwdriver or a wrench; for this, the saw has two handles, one for fixing the blade, the other for tensioning the chain. It took me a long time to choose a new saw, I’m glad I purchased this model. Initially I was looking for the AKE 35S model, due to the lack of this model I bought the AKE 40S (the only difference is the length of the blade for the chain). I advise you to buy.

Makita UC3541A

My first saw. Purchased for cutting boards and timber. I have little operating experience, but so far I like the saw. Feels like a good, well thought out instrument. At first it seemed that the person carrying her could have been smaller, but it was convenient for her to work. I especially liked the mechanism for fixing and tensioning the chain. The chain is tensioned with a special wheel. And the chain itself with the tire is fixed with a washer in the form of a plastic disk with a handle, which is removed and fixed inside the case. In general, in my opinion it is more convenient than in the previous model. The chain is fixed securely and I don’t think that it can be pulled out due to the peculiarity of the tension mechanism, as was described in another review. Yes, it stretches a little, but this is normal for the operation of the chain. I've pulled it up once so far. Eats butter. In a few days of not particularly intensive work, about 300 ml was used. At an oil price of 160 rubles per liter (Leroy), I don’t think this will become a problem. There is a screw for adjusting the supply of chain oil on the body, but I did not dare touch it.

Daewoo Power Products DACS 1900E

Advantages: Lightweight, small in size. Wide neck opening for filling oil - you can pour it straight from the bottle without a “funnel”. The main part of the body is made of metal. The chain is tensioned without using a cardan, and not with a screwdriver. Disadvantages: There is no instant hand chain brake like on gasoline ones. There is a plastic lever, but it is not active. The chain stops on its own in 2-3 seconds. For its price, this is not a drawback, but rather a feature. Comment: In a summer cottage, it replaces both a hand saw and pruning shears. The 20 cm trunk is easy to saw. I think maybe thicker. At the same time, it is very convenient to saw off small branches at height or raspberry bushes. The operation is very simple, you only need oil on the chain. If you have a good extension cord, you don’t need a gasoline power supply at the dacha. At the same time, it’s not as noisy as a gasoline engine, you don’t have to smell the exhaust and mess with the fuel mixture. You just need to buy a good extension cord with a cross-section of at least one and a half square.

DeWALT DCM565N

I bought a saw for working indoors, cutting timber into joists, straightening openings in a wooden house, also for roofing. I use lexvolt batteries and they make the saw more powerful. The tool is convenient and light, you need one when in inconvenient places you have to hold the material with one hand and cut it with the other; there are plenty of such situations when making rafters. The complete chain cuts well with the lower or upper part, but it doesn’t want to take the cantilever at all, often you just need to go deep somewhere in the middle of the material, so with this chain it’s problematic. The speed of the chain is too low, and at the end the dry wood tears very violently. There is a need to constantly check the clamp of the casing; sometimes it loosens while moving, and some kind of fixation is missing. Suitable as an auxiliary tool, it does not lie idle.

APV-75RUS

Makita DUC302Z

Advantages: Compared to a chainsaw: it works quietly, there is no stench from the exhaust like a gasoline one, which means you can work indoors, you don’t have to bother with mixing gasoline and oil, you don’t have to struggle with starting in the cold - press the button and drink until the battery runs out ! Disadvantages: The tire cover is clearly not from this model. But this is a small thing, just a quibble. Comment: Using 5Ah batteries, I sawed old boards and timber for firewood for 55 minutes. Not a bad indicator at all. Charging batteries 50 minutes. The chain is made of good steel, I caught nails several times, no sharpening is required yet. Compared to my chainsaw with a similar tire size, the Makita proved to be more powerful. After two hours of work, the tool is relatively clean and easy to clean. A chainsaw, due to gasoline, exhaust and oil, is much dirtier and less easy to clean. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase, it's a good tool.

greenworks G40CS30

Pros: Ready for use immediately. No smell, quieter than gasoline. I bought it for hiking so that the car would not smell of gasoline and would not frighten other vacationers with the noise. Quite compact. Looks like a toy) Disadvantages: The build quality is not very good.. In some places the plastic does not fit perfectly, the branded stickers are not glued evenly. The speed of the chain is too low, this causes some vibration, or rather you need to hold it tighter. On older models the speed is higher, probably there is no such problem. The most unpleasant thing was that when at rest, oil leaked out of the tank. I didn’t notice right away, but still, after two months of inactivity, half a bottle leaked out, about 25 ml. It is leaking at the junction of the tank and the oil supply pipe. Maybe I'm the only one who has this problem, but I think everyone does. It can be solved quite simply using a tube of gel pen paste. A piece of about 1 cm is cut off and inserted inside the oil supply tube at the place of the cuff connecting to the tank. Then this tube sits much tighter. So far the flight is normal. Anyone who is going to do it will understand what I mean. In short, you will have to put in some effort to make it more or less perfect. Comment: In general, I am satisfied with the purchase, despite the above-mentioned jambs. For that kind of money you can’t buy something like this from famous companies, although I would like to, but since I don’t use it often, it’s the same thing) For construction it will be rather weak and will not replace gasoline. It’s better to take a 4-amp battery right away so you don’t regret it later.

Makita UC3541A

I used the previous MAKITA electric chain saw for more than 10 years, without any complaints, so I chose the next one from the same company, and also with keyless chain locking, MAKITA UC3541A, but MAKITA is no longer the same - factory defects and refusal of warranty service are something which I definitely didn't expect. So: I bought it, filled it with oil, lubricated the blade and driven sprocket with chainlube lubricant so that it wouldn’t start dry, checked the brake, started it…. Everything works, it spins, I bring the end of the blade to the board, I wait for the usual splashes from the place where the chain turns, but they don’t come!! I slowly unscrew the oil supply screw, but the chain is not lubricated! But lubricant has appeared from the saw body in the region of the drive star, and quite a lot, almost a trickle, is already flowing. I remove the cover, the blade, the chain, turn it on, I see that the oil is supplied by the pump in excess to the channel, from which it should get through the bus into the chain, I checked the tire, it’s clean, the channel is visible. I assemble it, lubricate the chain and bar just in case, I try to saw, again the chain is dry and oil drips from the saw. After several attempts, it was possible to establish that a manufacturing defect in the form of uneven surfaces of the saw body at the site of contact of the blade does not make their connection airtight; the oil does not rise to the chain, but leaks between the body and the blade. In ten minutes of troubleshooting, the chain and blade heated up, the lid and body of the saw melted. Having submitted it to the service of the seller, a large, by the way, French dealer in tools and building materials in Strogino, for transfer to the MAKITA warranty service center, a month later I received a refusal, because. “The case was recognized as not covered by warranty due to the formation of an air lock.” It seems that the service center didn’t even bother to spend time assembling and turning on the saw and inspecting it in working condition. I had to send it there for re-examination, I’m waiting for an answer, but I was disappointed in the quality of Makita, as well as in the service policy.
