361 Calm, characteristics, carburetor adjustment and chainsaw review

Advantages and disadvantages

Original Stihl chainsaw carburetors have no technical flaws.
This product is from German manufacturers, technically sophisticated and modern. The cross-sections of the channels and the throughput of the calibrated holes are precisely calculated. An engine with such a carburetor does not consume excess fuel, but is able to operate at full power. For its manufacture, materials suitable for their properties are used. The metal does not oxidize and is quite durable. Plastic parts are not corroded by gasoline and last a long time.

The original carburetors of Stihl chainsaws do not break down also because the carburetors on any chainsaws do not experience large mechanical and thermal loads. In the original carburetor of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw, only gaskets and a membrane can fail. After many years of use, plastic can change its properties and become hard or brittle. In this case, you can purchase a repair kit and replace the old parts.

But no manufacturer can give a 100% guarantee of eternal operation for their products.

Sometimes carburetors from the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw are purchased in order to install them on chainsaws of other brands of similar power.

Carburetor adjustment

If the Shtil 230 chainsaw starts and stalls or simply works unstably, then it’s time to look at how things are going with the fuel supply system, namely the carburetor. Most likely the reason lies in it, and it requires maintenance. We will not dwell on this process in detail within the framework of this article, because We previously talked about carburetor repair on chainsaws in general and Shtil in particular. We recommend reading the articles: design and adjustment of the carburetor on a Shtil 180 chainsaw and the second interesting article about adjusting the carburetor on chainsaws in general.

The articles raise questions about the main reasons why the saw begins to “nonsense”. Detailed and detailed answers are given that will help you repair any malfunctions yourself.

If for some reason you cannot contact the specialized service of the Stihl company, and want to adjust the carburetor of the chainsaw with your own hands, then you definitely need to watch educational videos regarding this issue. We present to your attention our selection.

Adjusting the carburetor on Shtil 230 and 250 saws is no different, so watching the video will be useful for owners of both chainsaws.

Summing up

Stihl chainsaws are famous for their reliability, so the need to adjust the carburetor and repair it very rarely arises; if such a need does arise, then it is better to entrust the adjustment process to specialists in their field, at least because to set the maximum speed you need to have a tachometer.

If you have an urgent need to adjust the carburetor on a Stihl MS 361 chainsaw, then strictly follow the algorithm and recommendations described in the article. And then, if possible, contact a specialized center as soon as possible for fine tuning, it will extend the life of the chainsaw.

Design and principle of operation

The Stihl MS 361 chainsaw carburetor consists of 42 parts, including gaskets and mounting screws. Main nodes:

  • housing with air and fuel supply channels, storage chamber;
  • diffuser;
  • jets;
  • air and throttle valves;
  • membrane;
  • manual fuel pump (primer).

Fuel from the gas tank enters the carburetor, where it is atomized, mixed with air, and the resulting fuel-air mixture is fed into the combustion chamber. A mixture with a higher gasoline content is called enriched. If there is more air and less air, the mixture becomes lean. The composition of the mixture is adjusted using adjusting screws. The carburetor is considered a complex device because it ensures the operation of the internal combustion engine in three different modes - cold start, idle and at maximum speed.

After starting, a vacuum is formed in the combustion chamber during operation of the internal combustion engine, into which the fuel-air mixture is automatically sucked in.

At idle, the throttle valve is closed, and the flow of mixture is limited.

When you press the gas handle, the throttle valve opens slightly, the mixture supply and engine speed increase.

Out of habit, the storage tank is sometimes called a “float chamber,” although there is no float in membrane carburetors.

In the “full throttle” position, the throttle and air valves are fully open. The flow of gasoline in this mode is regulated only by a calibrated hole in the high-speed nozzle. When adjusting, adjusting screw H can reduce or increase the flow of gasoline through this hole. Screws L and LA regulate idle and low speed.

Operating principle

The purpose of the carburetor is to prepare the working mixture for supplying it to the engine cylinders. This mixture is gasoline and air in the proportions required for engine operation. If this ratio is violated, the engine will not operate smoothly. When the mixture has a lot of gasoline, then in layman's terminology it is called saturated, and if, on the contrary, there is little, then it is lean. But in any case, a failure in the proportions of the working mixture will have a bad effect on performance.

Different models of chainsaws may have different carburetor designs, but according to the principle of operation they are all identical. Air moves through a special channel at a speed that can be adjusted by closing or opening the damper. Gasoline, in turn, enters the carburetor through jets and mixes with air there, creating a special mixture that enters the engine.

The pressure in the float compartment of the carburetor, where gasoline is present before mixing, is close to atmospheric. When the damper is opened, there is more air, as well as gasoline, due to which the engine speed increases. This creates a vacuum in the air channel and gasoline is drawn into the air flow. This is the principle of operation of a carburetor .

In order for the chainsaw to operate smoothly and efficiently, and also without high fuel consumption, its carburetor must be adjusted accordingly. Before such work, you must first check the air and gasoline filters. If dirt is found on them, they should be replaced.

Setting up a chainsaw for most models is usually done using three screws - high and low speed and idle speed.

The following signs should indicate correct configuration:

  1. The chain should not move at idle.
  2. The motor runs smoothly.
  3. There should also be no interruptions in work at start-up.

Repairing a chainsaw carburetor with your own hands must be done very carefully, because any mistake made can lead to serious consequences, even to the point of complete engine failure. If you do not have sufficient experience, then it is better to seek the help of a specialist .

Malfunctions and repairs

The carburetor of the Stihl 180 chainsaw requires both initial and periodic adjustment. You can find out about its need by the following signs:

  1. Problems with the engine, for example, it does not start or stalls immediately after starting. The most common cause is the use of a low-quality fuel mixture.
  2. Fuel consumption and increased emissions. Exhaust gases increase due to incomplete combustion of fuel. Most often, this problem can arise due to oversaturation with fuel.

Other damage may also occur, for example, blockage due to damage to the air filter or the formation of scale. The reasons may be due to the fact that during prolonged periods of inactivity, gasoline remains in the fuel tank. This is due to the fact that the fuel runs out, which damages the device.

Regardless of the reason, carburetor repair will be required, which most often comes down to adjustment. The method for performing this procedure depends on the chainsaw model, but you can follow the general principles.

How to remove a carburetor from a chainsaw

Before adjusting, you need to remove it from the Shtil chainsaw. To do this you need:

  1. Turn the lock to the left to remove the cover.
  2. Remove the filter by unscrewing the two nuts that hold it in place. To make work easier, it is recommended to use special screwdrivers with suitable attachments.
  3. Remove all rods, including the carburetor lever.
  4. Remove the carburetor and then disconnect the fuel hose.

It is recommended to remember the location of the parts so that you can then put the carburetor in place without any extra fasteners remaining or distortions and cracks not forming.

How to clean

If the chainsaw stalls at idle, it is necessary to disassemble the part and clean it. This primarily concerns cleaning the additional filter. This part is a mesh. To get to it you need:

Remove the largest cover. Remove the membrane located under the cover. Clean the mesh that is located in the recess

This must be done with extreme caution, as the mesh may fall out. Use copper wire for cleaning

Additionally, you need to rinse and blow out all channels. The last procedure is necessary if gasoline does not flow into the carburetor.

How to setup

The carburetor adjustment of the Shtil 180 chainsaw is carried out in order to improve performance and fuel economy.

To adjust it yourself you need:

  1. Clean the fuel system, including the tank, from any remaining mixture of gasoline and oil. Blow out the air duct and filters.
  2. The chainsaw carburetor is adjusted using bolts H, L and S. Bolt H controls the jet and ensures maximum speed. Bolt L performs the same function, but provides minimum speed. Screw S is responsible for the accuracy of idle speed. This procedure must be performed with the engine turned off.
  3. You need to adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw by setting the corresponding rotation angles of the first two bolts. You can set the base values as follows. Turn the first two bolts slowly in a clockwise direction, and after stopping, turn back two turns.
  4. Turn on the engine and adjust the ignition on the Stihl chainsaw and its carburetor completely. To do this, you need to find the highest idle speed by turning the bolt L in different directions. Once this maximum has been found, the bolt must be returned a quarter of the way. If the chain starts to move, the engine must be stopped.
  5. Carry out a technical check. In particular, you need to determine the maximum number of revolutions, check the acceleration and stability of the engine at idle, as well as the compliance of these parameters with the basic values in the instructions. The quality of the mixture to be tested must be of the highest quality.

Benefits of modernization

The professional saw Shtil MS 361 successfully combines in its design a classic layout with the introduction of the most modern technical solutions.

  • Along with standard performance properties for its class, the advantages of an economical power unit with vortex formation of the fuel mixture are used.
  • The design of the spring vibration damper has been improved, repeatedly reducing the level of low- and high-frequency vibrations of the tool in different operating modes. This model is equipped with an adjustable oil supply system designed to lubricate the cutting chain.
  • The saw is equipped with an Ematic system and a QuickStop emergency braking device, which stops the movement of the chain in a split second in the event of an emergency.

The advantages of this model include optimized engine operation with a 4-channel cylinder, the presence of an accelerator primer pump in the fuel system, and an electronic ignition system controlled by a built-in microprocessor.

Adjusting the carburetor on a used chainsaw

How to properly adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw. If your chainsaw is brand new and you haven’t turned anything yet, then you need to count the number of revolutions when you tighten the screws all the way. To do this, you can invent a device from a simple dial of an old watch.

If the saw was not in working condition and was in the cold, before making adjustments, you need to warm up the saw for about 10 minutes.

Adjusting the carburetor on a chainsaw at home

Adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw with your own hands is not a problem. In fact, because saw adjustments at home are not carried out so often, it is rather a necessary measure. Consequently, high speeds are set for this saw in the region of 11,000 revolutions.

You can set it up at home without special equipment, that is, manually. Thus, it is carried out by ear. It is carried out in exactly the same way, that is, first we find the maximum speed, but we do it by ear without additional instruments. But we need to do this for a short time, because if we drive the saw at very high speeds, on a lean mixture, then we can simply ruin the piston group. Therefore, it is better to use a tachometer and increase the speed as necessary from a rich mixture to a leaner one per revolution, as we did with screw L, however, this is possible.

When setting up at home, when you adjust the saw, it is better not to touch the T screw at the very beginning. First, you need to adjust with screw L and then with screw H. As a last resort, if your chain rotates after adjusting the enrichment of the mixture with screws L and H, then we adjust the idle speed. We make the minimum number of revolutions using the throttle valve, that is, we lower the number of revolutions.

There will be a clear moment in the sound when the saw reached maximum speed, after which there was a sharp decline. This will be the maximum speed. After the tool reaches maximum speed, we reduce the speed by a quarter - this is again a preliminary setting, and a short setting. Because, after all, you need to set it up as it should, using the tachometer, if you want the saw to work long enough.

Setting up the carburetor on a chainsaw correctly

Before making adjustments, be sure to check the air filter, but it is advisable to also check the condition of the spark plugs. You can use a primer to start. It is not necessary to use it if the saw starts normally.

Screw H is turned clockwise all the way. Do not tighten too much, just until it touches, or when you feel that the needle has risen, and do not touch it any further. The same thing with screw L, turned all the way; this will be the initial setting.

In general, adjusting a carburetor on a saw is not that difficult, and the job is difficult; the main thing is to be able to hear and use a screwdriver, since this is the main tool when adjusting. If you still doubt your abilities, then the best solution would be to turn to specialists. And most importantly, all covers, screws, and air filter must be returned to their place. Make sure that nothing falls off during operation and bites the chain, thereby avoiding serious injuries.

Carburetor design

In Fig. 1 shows a modern carburetor for a German-made Shtil 250 chainsaw. It is a unit the size of half a human fist. The manufacturer of the mechanism is Walbro, Taiwan. Case material – stainless steel alloy. A damper is attached to the bottom of the device, ensuring a uniform supply of the fuel-air mixture to the engine combustion chamber.

Rice. 1. Carburetor for the “Calm” chainsaw.

There are also holes for attaching the unit to the power unit housing. A sealing gasket is installed between the mixture supply flanges and the engine combustion chamber. The accelerator pump is located under the throttle rod. It is a small piston with a rubber ring.

On the front of the housing there is a series of easy-to-use spring-loaded adjustment screws:

  • idle move;
  • maximum speed;
  • amount of mixture;
  • quality of the mixture.

The carburetor of the Stihl chainsaw is adjusted using these screws.

The main innovative feature of the carburetor for the Shtil 250 chainsaw is the heating device. To avoid freezing of the mechanism when operating during the winter period, it is equipped with a special system that preheats the steel case during operation. To do this, the unit is switched to winter operating mode.

The housing is blown with heated air sucked from the engine. This mode of operation of the mechanism prevents icing and freezing of the jets, and ensures a normal supply of the fuel-air mixture. When switching to summer operation, the hot air damper closes. Summer mode is characterized by natural cooling of the unit.

Specifications

In terms of its technical characteristics, the 361 Shtil differs sharply for the better from a line of similar ones. The powerful 59 cm³ engine produces up to 4.6 hp. (3.4 kW). Moreover, the weight of the product is only 5.6/5.8 kg. (5.8 version with heated handle). Ignition is electronic. The fuel used is a mixture of AI-92 gasoline with STIHL HP Ultra oil. You can use ready-made STIHL MotoMix. For 1 liter of gasoline, take 20 ml of oil, that is, the ratio is maintained at 1:50. Chain lubrication is automatic. The oil pump only turns on when the chain is moving. The volume of the oil tank is 0.325 liters, the fuel tank is 0.685. The saw can accommodate saw chains from 37 to 50 cm. The width of the groove on the bar is 1.6 mm. The vibration level of the chainsaw during operation is reduced. 361 Shtil is equipped with an inertia brake for the saw chain. More detailed characteristics are given in the “Operating Instructions”.

KEY-DOP

Do-it-yourself adjustment of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw carburetor

The three adjustment screws are primarily for factory adjustment. After assembling the carburetor and saw, each of them is adjusted one by one, on special stands, taking into account the characteristics of each Stihl MS 361 chainsaw. The screws are securely fixed during operation and do not unscrew spontaneously. Adjustment is rarely required. Namely:

  • When the piston system is critically worn, when the compression ratio (compression) has changed significantly.
  • When replacing the piston system, when the chainsaw does not work as well as during factory settings.
  • When working in the mountains, where due to low atmospheric pressure the engine lacks oxygen and it is necessary to increase the air supply (lean the mixture).

In other cases, idle speed adjustment is most often required if the engine stalls in this mode.

Required Tools

A special feature of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw is easy access to the carburetor. Simply remove the cover and air cleaner. Therefore, no tool other than a screwdriver is needed for adjustment. For professional adjustment you will need a tachometer. It will show the number of idle and maximum revolutions. Correct adjustment should provide 2500 rpm at idle and 10,000 rpm at maximum speed.

In the absence of a tachometer, the maximum speed is determined by ear. Idle - within two limits: the chainsaw should not stall when the idle speed is low, the chain should not move when the speed is too high.

Step-by-step adjustment algorithm

Before adjusting, you need to make sure that the air filter is clean. If it is clogged, there may not be enough air for complete combustion of the fuel mixture. Therefore, the engine does not work correctly. Perhaps no adjustment is required, but the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Remove the filter and try how the engine works without it. If good, then the problem is in the filter.

The presence of carbon deposits in the spark arrester grille and muffler is also checked. If the exhaust gases are obstructed, the engine is also not working properly and the problem is not the carburetor setting.

Standard adjustment

The manufacturer of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw in the Operation Manual (p. 37) recommends the following carburetor adjustment algorithm:

  • Turn the high speed adjusting bolt H clockwise until it stops, but no more than 3/4 of a turn.
  • Tighten the idle speed adjusting bolt L clockwise until it stops. Then turn it counterclockwise 1/4 turn.
  • Start the engine and warm up for 7-10 minutes.
  • Then the idle speed is adjusted by adjusting the LA thrust screw while the engine is running. It is screwed in clockwise, increasing idle speed until the chain begins to move. Then the LA screw is unscrewed back 1/2 turn.
  • If, when adjusting with screw LA, it is not possible to correctly adjust the idle speed (the engine stalls or the chain spins), they are adjusted with screw L. It is unscrewed 1/4 turn. Then continue adjusting with the LA screw, unscrewing it counterclockwise until the chain stops. Then in the same direction about 1/2 more turn. But so that the engine does not stall at idle.

In addition to the manufacturer's recommendations, there are practical aspects of carburetor adjustment.

Nuances you need to know

Turning any screw changes the factory setting

Therefore, it is extremely important to remember or write down the number of turns by which the position of the screws changed during adjustment. For example, if the screw is tightened all the way, it must be tightened, be sure to count the revolutions

Only this will make it possible to return to the factory adjustment parameters if it turns out to be unsuccessful.

Adjusting high speeds is easiest when the engine is running. Screw H is turned in small steps by 1/4 - 1/2 turn in one direction or the other. By pressing the throttle, you try how the engine reacts to changes in settings. Changes in speed are determined by ear or using a tachometer.

After adjusting high speeds, it is most often necessary to adjust the idle speed adjustment.

Educational video

The author of the video shows an example of original Chinese-made carburetors that are used on Stihl MS 361 chainsaws - Zam. He compares it with the German Walbro carburetor. He also gives an example of a fake carburetor. The video is very useful, recommended for viewing by both beginners and experienced people. We thought the problem was in the carburetor, but it turned out that it had nothing to do with it, it was much more serious.

Chinese models

Adjusting the carburetor of a Chinese chainsaw, for example, Carver, is carried out in almost the same way as factory models. There are the same three main adjustment screws L, N, T. Sometimes such models have the ability to adjust the idle speed. But as a rule, employees of specialized services and owners of such saws claim that it is not always possible to set up a high-quality Chinese chainsaw right away.

For classic Chinese models, screw L should be loosened 1.5 turns from the maximum value. Screw H must be loosened one revolution from the maximum. Idle speed is adjusted in the same way.

Thus, self-adjustment of a chainsaw carburetor is not a very complicated process and can, in most cases, be done by a self-taught person.

Stihl chainsaw carburetors have their own history. In 1958, Stihl was the first in the world to develop a membrane-type Flieger carburetor, with which the chainsaw can work in any position, even upside down. Over time, all chainsaws in the world began to use only such carburetors.

Advantages and disadvantages

Original Stihl chainsaw carburetors have no technical flaws. This product is from German manufacturers, technically sophisticated and modern. The cross-sections of the channels and the throughput of the calibrated holes are precisely calculated.

Walbro carburetor used on Stihl MS 361 chainsaws

An engine with such a carburetor does not consume excess fuel, but is able to operate at full power. For its manufacture, materials suitable for their properties are used. The metal does not oxidize and is quite durable. Plastic parts are not corroded by gasoline and last a long time.

Problems arise mainly with counterfeit carburetors from unknown manufacturers.

It is extremely rare to buy a new carburetor assembly, only in exceptional cases.

But no manufacturer can give a 100% guarantee of eternal operation for their products.

Sometimes carburetors from the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw are purchased in order to install them on chainsaws of other brands of similar power.

Attention, fake!

There is also sad news: every technique that is in demand among consumers, after a certain time, becomes counterfeit. Counterfeits come to us from China and, although they bear brand logos, they do not at all meet the declared (expected) quality. Fortunately, knowledgeable people have even learned to visually recognize the substitution.

They are ready to share this video information on the Internet, but we will describe these signs in the article.

Let's start with the body:

  • casting is rough, porous, low quality;
  • body color is dull;
  • The air filter screw is located at the top of the chainsaw. instead of the required end position of the original product;
  • the shape of the caps of the fuel and oil tanks is also different: on the original saw, the caps are made to fit the screwdriver included in the kit, on the fake they are simple, slightly convex;
  • serial numbers are completely missing;
  • The chain brake is attached on one side, while the original Shtil chainsaw MC 361 has a double-sided mount.

Chainsaw "Shtil" 361 in operation

  • The fake chainsaw has a simplified carburetor without a built-in compensator:
  • Non-original spark plugs are used without the corresponding Stihl brand logos.

In order to verify the authenticity of the Stihl MS 361 chainsaw, it is recommended to look at the instructions - it will also differ significantly from the original, which can be found on the Internet.

Well, the last check is the price. How much does the Shtil MC 361 chain saw cost? It is important to remember that the Stihl brand is an expensive brand, which means that the original Stihl MS 361 chainsaw cannot be cheap! On the domestic market, the price can vary from 36 to 46 thousand rubles.
