It has long been no secret to professionals that air filters on Chinese chainsaws are often just “for beauty”. After all, their protective nets do not fulfill their main purpose of cleaning the air from dust, dirt and small wood particles. As a result, all this debris almost freely enters the carburetor, crankcase and cylinder, and then settles in the form of carbon deposits on the piston head. Experts are well aware that carbon deposits on the piston head are much stronger than metal and can scratch the cylinder bore, which in turn can lead to extremely unpleasant consequences in the form of serious damage and expensive repairs to the chainsaw. A simple modification of the filter, which you can do yourself if you carefully read this article, will help you avoid this trouble.
Replacing a chainsaw fuel filter
Like all fuel-powered equipment, chainsaws have a fuel filter, it is located in the fuel compartment.
The main symptom of a faulty chainsaw fuel filter is that it stalls when you press the gas.
How to change the filter on a chainsaw:
- When replacing the filter element, there is no need to drain the gasoline mixture.
- Take a thick wire and bend the end to the shape of a hook.
- Unscrew the fuel tank cap.
- Lower the hook into the tank and hook the tube with the filter at the end. The tube is short enough, so when removing the filter, do not pull too hard; it is only long enough to replace it.
- Hold the tube with one hand, pull the filter with the other and remove it from the port - insert a new one.
- Make sure the filter fits tightly into the port. Place the filter tube into the tank. When starting the engine, the filter will lower itself to the desired position at the bottom.

Is it possible to make a nulevik with your own hands?
On the Internet you can find a lot of information about making a zero-resistance filter with your own hands. Of course, such filters cannot achieve the transmission efficiency and filtration quality provided by factory products.
The modern zero is a high-tech product, and it cannot be assembled in a garage. However, you can make at least a filter with similar parameters yourself. The filter surface area is usually increased by using filters from equipment with a large engine capacity (cars). The point is to connect the carburetor and the large aftermarket filter without allowing contaminated air to be sucked in at the connection. There is a lot of information about such alterations and you can easily find it on the Internet.
How to make a chainsaw silent with your own hands: we describe it point by point
Good day, dear readers and subscribers of Andrey Noak’s Blog. Here, recently, my neighbor in the country was cutting down trees on his property and preparing firewood. Naturally I used a chainsaw. Although he purchased not a professional saw, but a household one, it made a lot of noise. While he was working, all the neighbors, including me, were tired of this noise. That’s when the idea came to me, to tell him how to make a muffler for a chainsaw with your own hands.
Checking the ignition system
The first thing you need to do if your chainsaw breaks down is to inspect the spark plug by disconnecting the wire and carefully unscrewing it with a special wrench.
Her appearance speaks volumes:
- dry. Most likely, the fuel mixture is not getting into the cylinder. The problem is not in the ignition system, so the spark plug is screwed back in;
- heavily splashed with fuel. The reason for the excess fuel mixture lies either in violation of the starting rules or in incorrect carburetor adjustment. The spark plug is thoroughly wiped, the fuel supply is turned off and the starter is turned on to remove excess fuel and ventilate the combustion chamber. Then the candle is placed in place and the mechanism is started again;
- covered with black soot. This may indicate the use of low-quality oil, an incorrectly adjusted carburetor, or an incorrectly calculated ratio of gasoline to oil. The spark plug should be washed, removed from carbon deposits with a sharp object (an awl or a needle), the electrodes should be wiped with sandpaper and placed in place.
When checking the spark plug, you need to pay attention to the gap between the electrodes: 0.5 to 0.65 mm is considered normal. Damaged or worn gasket must be replaced
To be completely sure, you should also check for a spark. To do this, put the ignition cable on the spark plug, connect the spark plug nut and the cylinder with pliers, turn on the starter and watch for the appearance of a spark. If it is missing, the spark plug needs to be replaced. If the new spark plug also does not produce a spark, the problem is in the high-voltage wire or in a broken connection to the spark plug.
How to clean the air filter on a chainsaw
Malfunction of the fuel supply system in the chainsaw
If everything is in order with the ignition system, then we go further and check the fuel supply system of the chainsaw.
Failure of the fuel supply system is usually due to one of the following reasons:
What to do to prevent the carburetor from clogging. how to improve the air filter of a RemProst chainsaw
- fuel filter contamination;
- the hole in the tank lid is clogged;
- insufficient amount of incoming fuel mixture.
Disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and see whether fuel flows out of it or not. If the fuel flows in a free stream, then everything is in order. The lid and filter work properly. If the fuel mixture does not flow at all or flows very weakly, then clean the hole in the cover (breather) with a needle. the fuel filter through the filler hole using a hook (can be bent from a wire), together with the suction hose. First you need to empty the fuel tank. the filter and clean it or replace it with a new one. It is recommended to update the fuel filter every 3 months. As for the insufficient amount of fuel mixture entering the cylinder from the carburetor, the reason here may lie in a violation of the ratio of fuel and air mixed in the carburetor. The main reasons: clogged air filter, clogged carburetor channels or filter mesh. Of course, when repairing chainsaws, it is necessary to clean the air filter, since it gets dirty quite quickly. This reduces the amount of air entering the carburetor. In this case, the fuel mixture at the outlet turns out to be excessively enriched.

A dirty filter must be removed very carefully so that the accumulated dirt does not fall off and get into the carburetor. The filter must be cleaned or washed in water and detergent. Then we dry it and put it back.
Chainsaw muffler malfunction
It often happens that during prolonged operation, the walls of the exhaust pipe become covered with soot, which prevents the free exit of exhaust gases. In this case, you should remove the muffler (if possible) and wash it with detergent, then dry it thoroughly with a hairdryer. ATTENTION! Carbon deposits contain carcinogens. During dry brushing, it can enter your lungs, which poses a threat to your health. The cause of carbon deposits is usually an incorrect gasoline-oil ratio or the use of low-quality and incompatible oil.
Carefully read the operating instructions for your chainsaw to prevent this from happening in the future.
Chainsaw troubleshooting
Unfortunately, chainsaws, just like other equipment, can fail. Having at least a little idea of how a saw works, you can fix most problems with your own hands. The difficulty of repair lies not so much in the work itself, but in correctly determining the cause of the breakdown.
For example, if the saw does not start, there may be several reasons for this, so you should not immediately start disassembling it. First, analyze the causes of the breakdown, which are divided into 2 groups:
- Malfunctions of engine components, ignition system, fuel supply or exhaust. This also includes malfunctions of the cylinder - piston group.
- Malfunctions in the lubrication system unit, chain brake, clutch or tire, as well as a number of other malfunctions.
Checking the ignition system
The first thing you need to do when your chainsaw breaks down is to inspect the spark plug by disconnecting the wire and carefully unscrewing it with a special wrench.

Chainsaw fuel system design
The fuel system of a chainsaw is not only a gas tank into which a freshly prepared mixture consisting of gasoline and special oil is poured. The fuel system includes the following elements:
- Gas tank, the volume of which is up to half a liter
- Fuel filter located directly inside the gas tank
- The fuel line or hose through which the gasoline-oil mixture enters the carburetor
- Fuel tank cap with breather. Few people know what a breather is, but it is an important part in the design of a gas-powered tool, which is responsible for balancing the pressure inside the tank
The more powerful the chainsaw engine, the larger the volume of the gas tank. However, too large a tank volume increases the weight of the tool, so chainsaws with a tank volume exceeding 0.6-0.8 liters are not produced. On average, a full tank is enough to work with the tool for up to 50 minutes. This is an average value, since everything depends not only on the engine power, but also on the size of the logs being cut. The longer the chainsaw is operated under maximum load, the more often it will need to be refueled.
What is a breather on a chainsaw, and what device does it have? A breather is a pressure equalizer or check valve that prevents the creation of a vacuum inside the gas tank. A vacuum or depression in the tank is created when the amount of fuel decreases. A breather is a valve that allows air to flow in only one direction. This valve also prevents gasoline from leaking out of the tank. This valve is used in the design of a saw’s gas tank with a diaphragm carburetor. The vacuum created in the design of the gas tank is an obstacle to pumping the gasoline-oil mixture, so the presence and serviceability of a breather is mandatory.
The breather can be located in the design of the gas tank cap (in the form of a small hole) or in the structure of the tank itself. You can find out where the breather is on a chainsaw yourself by examining the tool’s container. If the breather hole becomes clogged, this will make it impossible to start the chainsaw engine. To correct the situation, you need to clean the chainsaw breather hole.
The tank contains a fuel filter, the purpose of which is known to everyone. It is presented in the form of a cylindrical barrel connected to a fuel hose. Passing through the filter, the fuel enters the hose and is directed to the carburetor.
To quickly start a chainsaw engine, manual choke or pre-priming primers are installed in the design of the fuel system of certain manufacturers. This element allows you to manually pump fuel into the carburetor, thereby speeding up engine starting. If there is no primer on the chainsaw, then fuel is pumped into the carburetor by pulling the starter handle.
After stopping the engine, fuel flows from the tube back into the tank. Knowing the design and operating principle of the chainsaw fuel system, it will not be possible to identify breakdowns and then repair them yourself.
Problems starting the engine
It is very important to correctly determine the cause of the malfunction, because otherwise we simply cannot eliminate it. If, when trying to start the chainsaw, there are no extraneous sounds (knocking, grinding, etc.), then very often it turns out that in fact there is no breakdown. For example, if you start the chainsaw incorrectly and pull the choke for a long time, the engine simply floods and it is very difficult to start it.
In order to properly start a cold chainsaw engine, set the lever or switch to the “damper closed” position. Then you need to pump the mixture into the carburetor, if there is a fuel priming pump. Pull out the starting handle until the engine resistance becomes noticeable, and vigorously pull in amplitude, moving your hand to the side. After two or three such movements, the engine should first start and then stall. If this does not happen, then you need to move the lever to the half-throttle position or simply to the working position and then continue to start the chainsaw in this mode. For many chainsaws, the “half throttle” is automatically locked when the air damper is pulled out. Some models have a key ignition switch; it is important to make sure it is turned on.
If the engine does not start, then the first thing to do is unscrew and inspect the spark plug. There are cases when at a plant in the cold season, the combustion chamber is filled with fuel. Then you also need to unscrew the spark plug, dry the combustion chamber by idling, clean the spark plug, screw it in and repeat the start. It is advisable to immediately check for the presence of a spark - put a cap with a high-voltage wire on the unscrewed spark plug, place it on the cylinder and pull the starter. Visually we observe a frequent blue spark - good. Screw the spark plug into place and start it. If there is no spark, change the spark plug and try again. No again - we check the connection of the high-voltage wire to the spark plug, the coil and the ignition system.
In general, the type of malfunction can be judged by the condition of the spark plug.
- Dry. Most likely, the fuel mixture is not getting into the cylinder. The problem is not in the ignition system, so screw the spark plug back in and check the fuel supply system.
- Wet, heavily splashed with fuel. The reason for the excess fuel mixture lies either in a violation of the starting rules, as described above, or in incorrect carburetor adjustment.

- Malfunctions in the lubrication system unit, chain brake, clutch or tire, as well as a number of other malfunctions.
Engine Failure Indicators
Engine malfunction can be judged by the following problems that arise:
- it is impossible to start the engine;
- the engine starts, but then immediately stalls;
- the engine is running unsteadily;
- At idle speed it operates normally, but when under load it loses power or stalls.
All these problems may indicate a malfunction in the ignition system.
Checking the ignition system
Checking the system should begin with inspecting the spark plug. If it is dry, it means that the fuel mixture did not get into the cylinder and that means the ignition has nothing to do with it. If the spark plug is too flooded with the fuel mixture, then the saw was started incorrectly or the carburetor was incorrectly adjusted.
The spark plug is thoroughly wiped, then the fuel supply is turned off, the remaining fuel is removed, the chamber is ventilated and the starter is started. Then the spark plug is put back in place and the engine is started again. Black carbon deposits indicate that you used low-quality oil, or that the percentage ratio of oil and gasoline in the fuel mixture is incorrect. This may be due to an incorrectly adjusted carburetor. The spark plug should be washed and carbon deposits removed with a sharp awl or needle, the electrodes should be cleaned with fine sandpaper and the spark plug should be screwed into place.
When checking a spark plug, pay attention to the gap between its electrodes. The operating limits are 0.5 - 0.65 mm. If the sealing gasket in the spark plug is worn out or damaged, this can also cause problems with starting the engine.
You should also check the spark plug for the presence of a spark. To do this, connect the ignition cable to it, then clamp it with pliers with insulated handles and apply the spark plug to the cylinder with a thread or nut. By pulling the starter cable, check if there is a spark. If it is not there, then the candle is simply replaced. If the new spark plug does not produce a spark, then the problem is in the high-voltage wire

Troubleshooting the fuel system
Fuel cannot enter the cylinder for several reasons:
- The fuel filter is dirty. To fix the problem, remove the fuel hose and watch how the fuel flows. If the stream is weak, clean the fuel filter. Having taken it out through the hole for filling fuel, the filter is cleaned, and if it is heavily soiled, it is replaced with a new one.
- The breather is clogged - a small hole in the tank lid. You need to remove the hose and clear the blockage with a needle.
- The fuel is out or not enough. The reason is a clogged air filter. Air does not enter the carburetor in the required volume, resulting in a too rich fuel mixture, which disrupts the normal operation of the engine. The filter must be carefully removed, washed, dried and put back in place.
- The carburetor is not adjusted correctly. Since it is one of the main components of the engine, it is better to entrust the carburetor adjustment to a specialist. Self-tuning can permanently damage the engine.

For some information that may be needed when repairing a walk-behind tractor, see the article Design of a walk-behind tractor.
Engine malfunctions
Engine won't start
. If we are talking about a gasoline engine, when troubleshooting, it is necessary to consistently check all possible causes of problems, namely:
- Turn on the ignition.
- Availability of fuel in the tank.
- Opening the fuel tap.
- The condition of the carburetor air damper (it should be closed when starting a cold engine).
- Fuel entering the carburetor. To do this, you need to fill the float chamber by pressing down the float button (fuel should start pouring out of the hole in the float chamber cover), or disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and check whether gasoline flows freely. If the fuel flows in too thin a stream or does not flow at all, this may indicate a dirty fuel filter in the tank or a clogged air valve in the tank cap. Repairing a walk-behind tractor in this case will come down to cleaning the filter or valve.
The supply of fuel to the engine cylinder may be indicated by the condition of the spark plug, which in any case must be checked when troubleshooting the ignition system. The spark plug is unscrewed from the cylinder cover, having previously disconnected the wire, and inspected. If it is dry, this means that the fuel mixture is not supplied to the cylinder. And if before this it was established that gasoline is entering the carburetor, then the reason for the engine not starting may be in the carburetor. contamination of its filter mesh, clogging of the nozzle or some other malfunction. Whatever it is, the carburetor needs to be removed, disassembled and cleaned, but this device is very complex and before repairing it you should at least look at the carburetor diagram.
A wet spark plug indicates that fuel is entering the cylinder. Sometimes the walk-behind tractor does not start due to an excess of fuel mixture, so if there is too much gasoline on the spark plug, you need to dry the cylinder by thoroughly “pumping” the engine with a manual starter with the spark plug turned out. Before doing this, you need to shut off the fuel supply.
If the spark plug is contaminated with carbon deposits, it should be cleaned with gasoline and fine sandpaper. It is also necessary to check the gap between the electrodes and, if necessary, adjust it in accordance with the requirements of the operating manual. Typically the gap should be about 0.8mm.
After this, you need to check for a spark. attach a wire to the spark plug, press its metal part against the cylinder cover and simulate starting the engine with a starter. If the spark plug is working properly, a spark will occur between the electrodes. Sometimes it happens that a spark occurs, but it is so weak that it is not enough to ignite the fuel. If you have doubts about the strength of the spark, you need to check the operation of the engine with a new spark plug.
The absence of a spark may mean a faulty spark plug, lack of contact in the electrical circuit, a violation of the gap between the ignition coil and the magnetic circuit, or a malfunction of the electronic ignition coil. All these elements must be checked. A faulty spark plug and ignition coil must be replaced.
READ What you can make from a jigsaw with your own hands
If the walk-behind tractor is equipped with an electric starter, the engine may not start due to a discharged battery, a blown fuse, or a faulty starter. You need to check the battery charge, replace the fuse, repair or replace the starter.
The engine does not develop power
. If the walk-behind tractor engine starts but does not develop power (runs intermittently, stalls or does not gain speed under load), the following malfunctions may be possible reasons for unsatisfactory operation.
The air filter is dirty , as a result of which insufficient air enters the carburetor, and the fuel mixture turns out to be over-rich. Proper maintenance of a walk-behind tractor involves periodically cleaning the air filter, however, very dusty work may require more frequent cleaning. It is necessary to check the condition of the air filter and, depending on its material, clean it using one of the appropriate methods. The paper filter is cleaned by lightly tapping it on something hard and blowing it with a vacuum cleaner, the foam filter is washed in water with detergent and dried, the mesh filter is blown with a vacuum cleaner, etc. When the filters reach the end of their service life, they must be changed.
Low quality fuel. Bad fuel must be replaced with one recommended by the manufacturer.
The ignition system is faulty. You need to check it as described above. Clean the spark plug and adjust the gap between its electrodes, check for damage in the electrical circuit and the gap between the coil and the magnetic circuit (if this is provided for in the walk-behind tractor repair instructions).
Sometimes the engine cannot develop power due to the muffler being clogged with combustion products. In this case, you need to disassemble the muffler and check its condition, if necessary, wash it in gasoline and clean it with a car wash to remove carbon deposits using detergents. The non-removable muffler is dried with a hairdryer after washing. Remember that carbon deposits contain substances that are carcinogens, and dry cleaning, which could result in their inhalation, is unacceptable. When removing the muffler, plug the engine exhaust hole with a clean rag.
Dirty or incorrect adjustment of the walk-behind tractor carburetor. It is necessary to remove and clean the carburetor, and then adjust it, if this is provided for in the walk-behind tractor instructions.

A drop in engine power can be caused by a decrease in compression due to wear of the cylinder-piston group, the formation of scoring and scratches on the cylinder and piston, “retraction” in the grooves or breakage of the piston rings. In this case , check the compression by connecting a compression gauge to the spark plug hole and turning the engine shaft with the starter. Normal compression is characterized by a value of at least 8 atm (normal compression can be indicated in the engine characteristics). When measuring it, you need to take into account that the presence of a decompressor in the engine can affect the readings of the compression meter. The compression value in this case is about 5 atm. will not mean a low degree of wear of the cylinder-piston group, but the operation of the decompression valve.
Diesel engine won't start
. For most users, repairing and tuning a walk-behind tractor with a diesel engine is a more difficult task than repairing a walk-behind tractor with a gasoline engine. Not so much, perhaps, because of the design complexity of the diesel engine, but because of the lack of experience, since household devices are usually equipped with gasoline engines.
READ Jigsaw Cuts Crooked How to Adjust
The most common faults or conditions that may prevent diesel engines from starting are outlined in the table below. A detailed list of diesel malfunctions and methods for eliminating them are set out in the operating instructions for specific diesel walk-behind tractors.
- Cylinder head nuts are not tightened or the cylinder head .
- The piston, cylinder liner or piston rings are worn.
- Piston rings are stuck or broken.
- The correct valve clearance is not correct.
- The valve stem is stuck in the guide.
- the cylinder head nuts evenly in a diagonal order . Replace the cylinder head .
- Replace worn parts.
- Check the piston rings, wash or replace them.
- Adjust the gap.
- Remove the valve, flush it and the guide with fuel.
Walk-behind tractor transmission malfunctions
Malfunctions of the clutch itself depend on its type. If the walk-behind tractor has a belt drive that acts as a clutch, slippage may occur if the drive belt or pulley is oily, the belt is not tensioned or is too worn. The ways to fix these problems are obvious. Clean the transmission elements from dirt, tighten or replace the belt.
In a dry disc clutch, the cause of slippage may be the presence of oil contamination on the driven and driving discs. It should be removed by washing the discs with gasoline and drying them.
Regardless of the type of clutch (dry or oil), slippage can be caused by wear of the friction layer of the discs, weakening of the compression spring, or lack of clearance between the pressure element and the release bearing. The method of correction is determined by the nature of the malfunction. Worn disks and springs are changed, and if the gaps in the coupling are violated, the walk-behind tractor clutch is adjusted accordingly.
The clutch does not disengage completely
.
In this case, you should also start by checking the tension of the cable going from the control handle to the clutch.
Incomplete disengagement of the clutch can also be caused by deformation of the friction discs, their jamming on the splines, or non-compliance with the required parameters of the characteristics of the oil poured into the clutch housing. The latter applies to couplings operating in an oil bath. It is necessary to replace deformed discs, eliminate the causes of their jamming on the splines, and change the oil.
Increased noise in the gearbox (gearbox)
. Noise in the gearbox can occur due to a lack of oil in it or a discrepancy between its quality and the required parameters. by brand and purity. It is necessary to add oil to the walk-behind tractor gearbox or replace it.
Transmission components can make noise due to the banal failure to tighten fasteners. You need to look through and tighten them.
Most often, noise occurs due to worn gears and bearings. In this case, they are harbingers of more serious breakdowns. Timely repair of the walk-behind tractor gearbox, which consists of replacing worn parts, will help to avoid them.
Does not turn on, turns off spontaneously, or is difficult to change gears
. These malfunctions can occur for a number of reasons:
- Due to wear of the parts involved in gear shifting. Usually, wear (rolling) of the ends of the engaged gears occurs, which leads to incomplete activation and self-disengagement of speeds. In this case, it is necessary to disassemble the walk-behind tractor gearbox and correct the gear teeth by grinding or, if the wear is too great, replace them.
- Due to abrasion of the shaft splines, as well as displacement of the shafts in the axial direction due to wear of bearings and retaining rings. The axial position of the shafts can be adjusted by installing additional locking rings. Excessively worn bearings and rings must be replaced.
- Due to incorrect clutch adjustment, which can lead to difficulty shifting gears. The clutch is not fully depressed (disengaged). This can also be caused by an inexperienced operator who releases the clutch lever too early when changing gears. You need to adjust the clutch and learn how to shift gears correctly.

Transmission. quite a complex knot. If the operation and design of the walk-behind tractor is a complete secret to the user, you should not start repairing it yourself. It is better to entrust this work to those for whom servicing and repairing machines is a professional matter.
Transmission components get hot
. Among the main reasons for this malfunction. wear of bearings, insufficient level of transmission oil in the crankcases, non-compliance of its condition with the required parameters. Corrective measures: replace bearings, add or change oil.
Oil leak from the gearbox (gearbox)
. This occurs when the bearing seals are worn or incorrectly installed, the caps are not tightened or the gaskets under them are damaged, the air valve (breather) of the oil filler cap is clogged, or oil is poured into the crankcase above normal. Leaks can be eliminated by replacing and correctly installing seals, replacing gaskets and tightening the cover bolts, cleaning the breather, and bringing the oil level to normal.
Instability of the walk-behind tractor when moving (yaw)
. This pattern of movement of the walk-behind tractor is caused by different pressures in the right and left wheels, uneven wear of the tire tread, and incorrect adjustment of the towed devices, in particular the plow. In this case, adjusting the walk-behind tractor should be reduced to equalizing the pressure in the wheels and adjusting the towbars. It is also necessary to use tires of the same wear level.
Increased vibration of the walk-behind tractor
. Increased vibration usually occurs when attachments (mills, rotary mowers, etc.) are incorrectly adjusted or loosened. If vibrations occur, you should immediately stop the walk-behind tractor and put the trailers in order. secure the cutters or cutting segments of the rotary mower, replace them if they are worn or broken.
The article lists only the most common faults. The practice of operating walk-behind tractors is replete with a much wider list of faults. both atypical ones, which are sometimes very difficult to diagnose, and those whose nature and place do not raise any doubts.
If you cannot troubleshoot the walk-behind tractor on your own, there is only one option left. Contact a service center for the maintenance and repair of walk-behind tractors.
Possible problems
The main problem that arises during repairs is the lack of necessary information on repairs. This is explained by the fact that many foreign manufacturers believe that the saw should be disposed of after a certain period of use. Therefore, many craftsmen have certain doubts, especially when repairing budget models.
But expensive professional models also create certain difficulties:
- The first problem is supplying expensive spare parts.
- For maintenance and repair of some components, special equipment is useful.
Of course, it is possible to replace original spare parts with Chinese analogues, but judging by the reviews, this method is of little justification. Such components produce only half the resource.
How to eliminate the risks of purchasing a low-quality counterfeit
When purchasing a branded chain on the market, the risks of purchasing a counterfeit Chinese chain cannot be excluded. The task of independent choice is complicated by the lack of a reliable way to distinguish a high-quality branded original from a fake, which is an order of magnitude inferior to branded products in terms of working life.
With greater confidence, you can identify Shtilevsky chains by their silver packaging, bright orange logo and the presence of a wear indicator. Cheaper Chinese analogues are decorated more modestly, in gray boxes with a yellow trademark.
Without fear, you can buy saw chains of high quality and durability in company stores and licensed sales offices of intermediary companies.

Before we continue, we remind you once again that in peacetime, even the possession of all sorts of technical gadgets converted into silencers is illegal. So, let's go.
Chain brake does not work
Malfunctions of the fuel system are also quite often the main reason that prevents a chainsaw from working as efficiently as possible. First of all, you need to check the quality of the fuel mixture.
If gasoline drops periodically appear on the body of the chainsaw, then it is necessary to check the tightness of the fuel tank. Over time, it may dry out. Or the gasket has become “stiff” and it can no longer perform its direct function.
If full-fledged gasoline streams appear, then there is a high probability that you will have to change the burst hose connecting the carburetor and the fuel tank.
There are several reasons why the fuel mixture stopped flowing into the cylinder:
- The air filter is clogged.
- The carburetor settings have been lost.
- The carburetor membrane is no longer intact.
- The channels through which gasoline is transported are clogged.
If everything is in order with the filters, then you need to check the components of the gas supply system, and also make sure that there are no spontaneous changes in the carburetor settings.
In some cases, chainsaw users report other problems that do not significantly affect the operation of the tool.
Most often, excessive smoke appears when oil is added excessively to the fuel mixture, which does not have time to burn completely. You should also check to see if the carburetor settings have gone wrong.
In most cases, recoil at the moment of startup signals the decompressor clamping. If the tool is not equipped with a decompressor, then most likely the ignition system is faulty.
- No or low oil supply
- Oil leakage
In the first case, we first inspect the channels through which oil is supplied to the tire and clean them. Their clogging is a fairly common occurrence.
If there is significant oil leakage (small oil leakage is normal for all gasoline saws), you should check the tightness of the tubes and fittings of the oil pump. Tubes may fall off and even crack. Violation of the tightness of the tubes is eliminated by replacing them or sealing them with sealing material.
The most serious damage is a crack in the oil pump housing. In this case, you will have to completely replace it.

The chain brake may fail if the underframe space and brake band are contaminated with grease and sawdust. In addition, the chain brake may not operate due to wear on the brake band. If it is contaminated with sawdust, you should clean the saw from debris, and if the tape is worn, replace the tape with a new one.
DIY chainsaw repair and maintenance
Prices for chainsaws are falling and this makes them more popular and affordable not only for professionals, but also for ordinary, so to speak, amateurs. However, a common dependence - the lower the price, the less reliable the device and the more often malfunctions appear, is also relevant for chainsaws. But for a chainsaw of any price range, most malfunctions can be avoided with proper operation, care and timely maintenance of the equipment. But no one is immune from the breakdown of a chainsaw, as well as any other equipment. Therefore, it is proposed to consider the main types of chainsaw malfunctions, methods for diagnosing, eliminating and repairing them.
How to clean the air filter on a chainsaw? Daily maintenance of the chainsaw.
All the main malfunctions of chainsaws can be divided into two main categories: - malfunctions of the engine and its various components: fuel preparation and supply system, ignition, piston group with crankshaft, exhaust gas exhaust system; — malfunctions and breakdowns of other components: lubrication system, clutch, chain brake, tire and others.
Chain brake
Failure of the chain brake to operate may occur due to contamination of the underframe space and the brake band with sawdust or grease. This also leads to tape wear. In the first case, you need to clean the under-axle space, in the second, you need to replace the brake band.
If you have a brush cutter on your farm, use, maintenance and repair will help you. Moreover, you can make a lawn mower yourself from a chainsaw, thus unifying the tool.

Chainsaw storage
- After use, any chainsaw must be cleaned of sawdust, especially the area where the tire is attached, so that moisture does not accumulate and corrosive substances do not form.
- It is better to drain the oil used to lubricate the chain when storing it for more than a few days, since the tank is not sealed and the oil may leak out. This is not dangerous and there is no need to plug the holes, and it will not affect the operation of the chainsaw.
- During long-term storage, you must completely drain the fuel mixture
from the tank, start the saw and wait until it stalls from running out of fuel. The oil in the fuel mixture decomposes and cokes, and if the saw is stored for more than a month, the carburetor channels may become coked and/or the membranes may stick together, after which, at best, simple cleaning will be necessary, or at worst, replacement of the entire carburetor.
Why do you need a muffler?
This is a special device, thanks to which the noise from a running engine becomes an order of magnitude lower, but does not muffle it completely and this does not suit many people.
Of course, saws are now sold in which the muffler is capable of suppressing noise several times, but this immediately affects the operation of the saw.
Therefore, if you want to make the engine even quieter than what is provided by the factory, then you should try installing an additional muffler by making it yourself.
If you are smart, the same Ural saw can be made to work much quieter and this will not affect its performance in any way.
Design features of a manual starter
To start the chainsaw engine, you need to crank the crankshaft. This is done manually using a separate mechanism called a starter. The design of this mechanism is simple and is based on the following components:
- Drum - a part that connects to the crankshaft of a chainsaw
- A rope or cord that is wound around a drum
- Return spring - ensures winding of the cable onto the drum
- Handle - attached to the end of the cable
- The frame is the basis of the mechanism
The operating principle of this device is based on the fact that the drum teeth mesh with the teeth on the motor shaft. Moreover, engagement occurs when the cable is sharply pulled out of the drum. To start the engine, it is not enough to simply pull the starter handle. Starting the engine involves preliminary pumping fuel into the carburetor, closing the throttle and turning on the ignition. Only after this can you begin to sharply pull the starter handle.
Running in a chainsaw
Real running-in at idle speed is only needed for poor chainsaws, for normal chainsaws, for example for Stihl chainsaws, during the first few refuelings it is recommended to throttle only under load, and in the instructions for the Husqvarna chainsaw there is stupid advice “Avoid working at too high a speed during the first 10 hours” (where the speed regulator is remains a mystery) and there is no talk of any exhaustion of several tanks at idle speed.
It is also better to avoid buying chainsaws where the need for a long (more than an hour) break-in at idle speed is clearly indicated, since this is apparently a condition for a hook to refuse warranty service, saying: Have you done the break-in? No? Well, then this is a violation of the operating conditions...
Disassembling and cleaning the muffler
If the engine runs great at low speeds, but starts to stall at high speeds, the reason may lie in the muffler spark arrester, which is clogged with combustion products.
- remove the muffler;
- disassemble (there are also non-dismountable models);
- remove carbon deposits using detergents;
- dry with a hairdryer;
- install in place.
Dry cleaning is unacceptable, as carbon deposits contain carcinogens, the inhalation of which is hazardous to health. After removing the muffler, cover the exhaust hole with a clean rag.
Interruptions in the operation of the chainsaw indicate a possible clogging of the muffler
To prevent clogging of the muffler, it is necessary to monitor the composition of the fuel mixture. The amount of oil should not exceed the standards recommended by the manufacturer. Poor oil quality also negatively affects engine performance.
Required materials and tools
To begin, the hollow filter with mesh must be removed from the chainsaw, washed with a soft brush and laundry soap under running hot water and blown, for example, with a regular hairdryer.
In this case, the plastic case must be disassembled into two parts, being careful not to damage it when opening the latches with a screwdriver. This operation is necessary to clean the internal cavities from wood pollen. In addition, it is necessary to remove the rubber band, if there is one, from the pipe and also clean it of dirt.
We put the case back together, not forgetting to put the rubber seal in place. This completes the preparation for improvement. Now you need to make a visit to the kitchen accessories department of your nearest hardware store to buy fiber cloths/scrapers and double-layer sponges, which are used at home for washing dishes or finishing various sanded items
The main selection criterion is that there should be no abrasive particles on the sponge or napkins made of polymer fibers.

fuels and lubricants for chainsaws
The process of preparing a gasoline mixture must be approached very responsibly.
Chainsaws do not use pure gasoline, but mixed with two-stroke oil. The oil must be of high quality and burn without consequences during operation. The mixture is made in a percentage ratio of 1 to 50, in other words, 20 g of oil is added to 1 liter of gasoline. Measuring a liter of gasoline is not difficult, but to prepare exactly 20 g of oil, you will need a measuring cap or an ordinary medical syringe. After adding the oil, shake thoroughly until the mixture becomes homogeneous.
It is important not to mix up the filling containers. The gas tank has a clear design of a fuel pump printed on it. It is advisable to fill using a watering can-funnel to keep the instrument clean.
An additional mesh on the watering can is also desirable to prevent excess dirt from entering the tank. We must not forget that a chainsaw requires the use of oil to lubricate the chain. Any clean, unprocessed oil with an approximate viscosity of 15-30 is suitable for this.
It is advisable to fill it using a funnel to keep the tool clean. An additional mesh on the watering can is also desirable to prevent excess dirt from entering the tank. We must not forget that a chainsaw requires the use of oil to lubricate the chain. Any clean, unprocessed oil with an approximate viscosity of 15-30 is suitable for this.
Oil is poured into a separate tank located near the tire. When pouring, also use a watering can or syringe. Oil must be present in the chainsaw at all times. Periodically you need to lubricate the bearing, which is located at the end of the tire. This can be done with the same syringe through a special hole. The saw is ready for use, you can start starting. To minimize the possibility of accidental fire, it is recommended to start the saw in a place separate from its refueling.
Recommendations for use
To increase the life of the tool, you must follow some rules. This primarily concerns the saw chain and guide bars. It is recommended to replace the chain every three hours and turn the guides 180 degrees. As a result, these elements will wear out evenly, which will extend the life of the entire tool.
During operation, it is important to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the chainsaw. When sawing wood, the unit quickly becomes clogged with sawdust , which must be removed in a timely manner. Contamination of the technological holes can cause problems with the operation of the fuel system. It is also important to change oil and other consumables on time.
Malfunctions of Chinese chainsaws: review of popular ones and ways to solve them
Buying a cheap chainsaw made in China is not particularly difficult: a huge number of gas-powered tools from the Middle Kingdom are available in markets, construction hypermarkets and online stores. However, a low price almost always hides poor quality.
The most popular malfunctions of Chinese chainsaws include:
- Poor performance of the lubrication system. Clogged oil channels are cleaned, and if the oil pump fails, replacement is necessary.
- The starter cable breaks.
- Breakage of the plastic starter axis. To replace it, a regular metal bolt will do.
If there is the slightest suspicion that the chainsaw is not working properly, you should immediately carry out a full diagnostic of the tool. Only with proper operation and timely maintenance can you count on a long service life of the chainsaw.

Chainsaw malfunctions and repairs
A chainsaw is not such a complicated device. However, if a malfunction is detected, it is necessary to have at least basic knowledge in order to find and eliminate the defect that has arisen.
Let's look at the main malfunctions of chainsaws, find out what they are associated with, and also look at the main steps to correct the breakdowns.
The most important thing before starting repairs is to correctly identify the problem. And there may be several reasons for the inoperability of each element. Therefore, before you start disassembling the chainsaw, you need to try to determine what is causing the failure.
As a rule, failure of chainsaws is caused by a malfunction of the engine or breakdowns in other components.
- ignition fault;
- problems with the fuel supply system;
- piston or cylinder malfunction.
In other components, malfunctions most often arise due to failures of the brake mechanism, lubrication system, clutch operation, tires, etc.
Let's look at both groups of faults so that you can, if necessary, determine the cause of the breakdown on your own, without contacting a repair shop.
Fuel supply system repair
Fuel may not enter the cylinder for the following reasons:
- fuel filter contamination. You should remove the fuel hose and check how the fuel flows. If the stream is weak, the filter may need to be cleaned. It is taken out through the filler hole of the fuel tank and cleaned; in case of severe contamination, it is replaced with a new one. As a preventative measure, it is recommended to replace the fuel filter once every three months;
- clogged breather (hole in the fuel tank cap). They also check by disconnecting the hose; if clogged, clean it with a needle;
- lack or insufficient amount of fuel. There may be several reasons for the malfunction. The first reason is a clogged air filter. Air stops flowing into the carburetor in the required quantity, and therefore, due to the fuel mixture being too rich, engine operation is disrupted. The dirty filter is carefully removed, cleaned and rinsed in water, then dried and replaced.
Another reason is incorrect carburetor adjustment. Adjustment is made with three screws.
During work, you must use the instructions, otherwise you can only make things worse.
And the last reason is a violation of the integrity of the membrane or clogging of the carburetor channels.
All parts must be clean, dry and in good working order.
Features of the Chinese chainsaw
Before you figure out how to adjust a Chinese chainsaw, set it up, repair it and make it work correctly, you need to consider the design of the tool. Basically, Chinese-made models have:
- 2-stroke carburetor type engine;
- one air cooling system;
- one cylinder of different volumes.
Please note that chainsaws often fail due to contaminated air entering the engine. Ideally, there should be a lot of dust in it, but using the tool in such conditions is very rare
For this reason, the piston group may wear out. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to clean the air filter from time to time. Some chainsaws have a special air pre-purification system for this purpose.
Let's return to the design of the chainsaw. How does the engine start? For this purpose, a starter system is provided, which can be improved for easy starting with the following parts:
- a special booster pump called a primer;
- a steel spring that rotates the crankshaft as sharply as possible;
- connecting the cylinder to the atmosphere is a decompression valve that regulates the pressure on its walls.
Additionally, depending on the model of the power unit, it can be equipped with different vibration damping systems, saw sets and lubrication systems.
How to make an Air Filter for a Chainsaw
Content
Chainsaw
In addition to the listed devices, chain saws have an air purification system supplied to the carburetor, a bar with a saw chain, a starter, a chain tensioning mechanism, an ignition, a muffler,
engine
The chainsaw motor has a maximum speed of about 13,500 rpm. This places stringent requirements on the oil added to the fuel mixture.
clutch
At low speeds, elements with friction linings (1), which have a degree of freedom in the radial direction, are attracted to the center of the shaft by springs (2) and do not transmit rotation to the drum (3), connected to the sprocket chain drive. When the speed of the chainsaw reaches values at which the centrifugal force exceeds the force of the springs, the friction segments are pressed against the inner surface of the drum and begin to rotate. As a result, the drive sprocket begins to rotate, which drives the saw chain.
As you can see in the photo, the sprocket is located behind the clutch.
In other chainsaws, the sprocket may be located outside the clutch.
The main advantage of this type of coupling is that when the chain jams, the clutch with the chainsaw chain does not stall the engine and does not cause destruction of the mechanisms that transmit movement from the engine to the chain.
Ignition system
The electronic ignition of a chainsaw includes a flywheel (1) with built-in magnets, an ignition module (2) with an electronic circuit, a spark plug (3) and a high-voltage wire (4). A rotating flywheel with magnets induces an emf in the module, which is converted by an electronic circuit into electrical signals supplied to the spark plug. As a result, a spark ignites between the contacts of the latter, which ignites the air-fuel mixture.
carburetor
Below is a diagram of another chainsaw carburetor.
Carburetors have a throttle that allows you to degrease or enrich the mixture, depending on operating conditions. For fine tuning, there are several screws that help adjust low and high engine speeds as well as idle speed. An air vent is installed at the top of the carburetor.
a filter that purifies the air entering it.
Fuel system
Thus, when the fuel mixture is consumed, the fuel tank is filled with air and there is no negative pressure in it, which prevents fuel from entering it into the carburetor and at the same time prevents fuel from leaking from the air hole, the cap covering the fill hole is made a respite. And by the way, if the breather is clogged with dirt, then the chainsaw nods.
From the fuel tank, the fuel hangs freely in the reservoir hose. Because of this, regardless of the position of the chainsaw, the hose is always immersed in fuel. A fuel filter is attached to the inlet end of the hose. Fuel is pumped by a pump inside the carburetor.
READ Disassembling Chainsaw Partner 352
To make starting easier, part of the chainsaw is equipped with a hand pump for pumping out. primer When starting a chainsaw with a primer, the carburetor is filled with fuel in advance (excess fuel is returned to the tank). Thanks to this, the engine starts faster because the stage of filling the carburetor with fuel has already been completed, which is carried out without priming by the carburetor pump due to the starter.
Air purification system
Pre-filters can have different designs and consist of several elements, in particular, mesh (2) and snow (1) filters (see photo below).
The latter prevents snow from entering the air purification system and is used only in winter; at elevated temperatures it is removed.
Some chainsaw models use air purification using centrifugal forces at the pre-cleaning stage. The air flow is twisted by the flywheel impeller, causing impurities to be thrown out of the suction pipe into a fine filter.
Fine filters are made of diffusion foam, nylon mesh and other materials.
When a chainsaw is running, the air in its operating area is heavily contaminated with sawdust and wood dust. Excessive filter contamination reduces the amount of air entering the carburetor, which leads to a richer mixture and a decrease in the power of the chainsaw. Therefore, regular filter cleaning is necessary. It should be performed not only when dismantling the chainsaw for the purpose of repairing it, but much more often after long and dirty work. Cleaning is done using a method that depends on the type of filter material. most often by purging and washing.

Starter
The starter mechanism consists of a drum (1) with a cable (2) and a handle (3) and a frame (4) with a return spring. When the handle is raised sharply, the drum ratchet engages the teeth on the engine shaft and turns the crankshaft. When the handle is released, the return spring returns it to its original position.
It takes a certain amount of force to tighten the crankshaft to the speed at which the engine starts. Starting the chainsaw with one jerk often fails, you have to jerk it several times. Various methods are used to make startup easier. enrich the fuel mixture with a carburetor valve or reduce the pressure in the cylinder using a decompression valve (to make cranking easier). The valve closes automatically when the pressure in the cylinder increases and the mixture ignites. Sometimes the starter mechanism uses an additional spring, which, when the cable is pulled, is first compressed and then suddenly released, rotating the engine.

The main and most complex links in the chain are the cutting lines, which are divided into right and left. Upper edge of the tooth. the widest of all elements. It provides a wide cut, eliminating jamming of other links.
The shape of the cutting teeth can vary significantly between chains from different manufacturers. There are two main forms. Chipper (a) and chisel (b). However, there are different intermediate contours of the incisors.
Cutting edges of the tooth. side and top. pointed at a certain angle. For longitudinal sawing chains it is 10 °, for transverse sawing. 30. Rip saw chains are rarely used. If necessary, longitudinal sawing can also be performed with a cross-cut chain. For more information on sharpening angles for chainsaw chains, read the article Sharpening Chainsaw Chains.
The main characteristic of a chain is its pitch. To establish the chain pitch, the distance between the centers of the first and third rivets is measured (see picture below) and this measurement is divided in half. Result. step chain in mm. However, in most cases the chain pitch is specified in inches. The distance between the centers of the first and third connecting rivets is measured since the distances between the drive link holes and the cutting links or connecting links may vary in size. The most common patterns are 0.325 and 3/8 inches (8.255 and 9.525 mm, respectively). 0.325 pitch chains are used with low horsepower engines (up to 40-50 cc), while high-power chainsaws are usually equipped with 0.404 inch chains (these designs have better performance). The saw is made cleaner and neater if you use a chain with a thinner lever thickness and a smaller sawing pitch.
The thickness of the liner is an important characteristic. There are five standard thicknesses: 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 2 mm. The most common are chains with a shank thickness of 1.3 mm (0.05 inch), they are widely used in both domestic and professional chain saws, the thickness of the drive links should match the width of the guide groove, so that the saw chain fits exactly with the guide.
Chain manufacturers use different technologies to produce them and use different materials. The defining characteristic of the latter is not hardness (too hard teeth do not lead to manual grinding), but strength and impact resistance. They determine the durability of the chain. Therefore, wear-resistant alloy steels are used in the manufacture of cutting teeth. Often the cutters are coated with chromium to increase surface hardness. Some companies use shot peening to increase the toughness of teeth.
READ What You Can Make From An Old Chainsaw Chain
To control the chain, the tire has a guide groove along its periphery, in which the driving links of the chain move. The groove groove also serves as chain feed oil to lubricate the chain. Key tire characteristics include:
- Dimensions of connecting holes (a), depending on the type of chainsaw.
- The width of the groove (b), which must correspond to the shank thickness of the chain used. The width of the bar groove is only a few hundredths of a millimeter greater than the thickness of the drive links of the corresponding saw chains. This ensures precise lateral guidance of the saw chain.
- The pitch of the end sprocket (in), which also determines the compatibility of the used chains with the bus.
- The length of the cut (d), which determines the size of the material being processed. tree trunk diameter, etc.
Chain brake
Activation of the chain brake can be contact or inertial. The first occurs when the brake stop (1) is pressed on the worker's hand, which occurs spontaneously when the saw is thrown out. The resulting movement of the stopper causes the brake band (2) to tighten on the clutch drum and stop, which also stops the saw chain.
Inertial brake operation is based on the inertial forces acting on the tire when the tire is suddenly struck, which affects the brake elements, resulting in the same result as in the first case. tightening the brake belt and stopping the chain. Inertial brake activation occurs faster than contact brake activation. However, the second one is more reliable. Any preparation for work, as well as assembly of the chain saw after repair or maintenance, must end with checking the functioning of the chain brake. If this does not work, the saw should be considered defective.
Chain tension mechanism
For greater convenience, the chain tension screw can be located on the side.
Chain lubrication system
Oil pumps have different designs (piston or diaphragm) and are made of different materials (metal or plastic). They are activated by a gear train receiving its movement from the drive sprocket. When the engine is idling (the drive sprocket and chain are not rotating), no oil flows. The performance of the pump depends on the speed of the drive sprocket; the higher it is, the more oil enters the saw chain. Some oil pumps are equipped with a mechanical power control mechanism. with adjusting screw (1).
