Most often, a burner for a semi-automatic device is supplied as a kit. The recommended combination guarantees effective operation, but for a limited period. After some time (depending on operating conditions), the burner will have to be replaced and here the question arises - how to choose a worthy replacement?
A systematic approach will help with this. There are really only 5 key factors
determine the choice of burner:
- Current strength
- The length of the sleeve
- Cooling method
- Ergonomics
- Ease of maintenance
Let's look at each in more detail to form an idea of the best option for your welding equipment.

Water or air cooling?
Air-cooled power cable burners are designed for a duty cycle of 60%, while water-cooled burners have a duty cycle* of 100%. If you plan to weld a lot and for a long time, to do surfacing, then we recommend that you take a water-cooled torch, or use an air-cooled torch, but not at maximum current.
Do not forget that during the welding process not only the power cable, but also the torch handle heats up. Remember that welding in a mixture (CO₂ and Argon) always heats up the torch more than just welding in CO₂.
PV* — Duration of switching on in a 10-minute cycle at maximum current. Example: The MP 15 torch can weld metals without stopping at a maximum current of 160 Amps for 6 minutes, where 4 minutes of the 10 minute cycle are required to cool the power cable. The lower the current on the burner, the longer it can work without interruption.
Multilock: one welding torch – many options
Multifunctionality means more than just a set of process control tools. The Multilock system has been designed for maximum flexibility, allowing the welder to change the torch jaw depending on the shape of the elements being welded and its availability. By varying torch jaw lengths and angles, you can achieve exceptional welding results no matter how complex the welding task.
Multilock is also very convenient for replacing faulty parts. For example, if the torch jib is damaged, but the hose package is absolutely intact, then only the jib can be quickly and easily replaced thanks to the Multilock connection.
Thanks to the Multilock design, the torch jaw can be rotated 360°. For example, turning it 180° up allows you to easily and conveniently perform welding work in the ceiling position. The burner control remains the same.
Maximum and minimum current?
For semi-automatic burners there is no concept of minimum current. Everything is regulated by your device, usually 10 or 20 Amps. But the maximum current is clearly indicated in the technical specifications for each burner, and we strongly recommend not to ignore this important parameter.
The maximum current for an air-cooled burner (MP 450) is 400 Amperes in mixed gases and 500 Amps in CO₂.
Water-cooled torch (MP 500) - can weld metals in a mixture of gases at a maximum current of 450 Amps and in CO₂ at a current of 500 Amps.
Cooling method
Burner cooling can be air or liquid. For currents up to 250 A, air cooling is sufficient. With such a tool it is easy to make short seams without fear of overheating.
For long seams, high loads and large volumes of work, liquid-cooled torches are relevant. They provide additional channels for supplying and discharging liquid. The working fluid is supplied from a special cooling module to which the burner is connected. It is unsafe to operate such burners without liquid.
Torch weight and how it affects the welder
Burners can be divided into two types: for light production and for heavy industry. The standard classifier classifies burners up to 240 Amps as light industry, and burners from 240 Amps as heavy industry. On our website, the weight of the burner is indicated in full, along with the handle, cable and Euro adapter.
The higher the maximum welding current of the torch, the thicker the cross-section of the copper cable, and therefore the weight. For example, let’s compare two burners, the most popular MP 15 (3 meters) and the most industrial (air-cooled) MP 450 (3 meters) - the weight of the first is 1.6 kg, and the second is 3.7 kg. More than twice. The heavier the burner, the more difficult it is to control. Especially if the torch cable is in tension and not lying on the surface.
The length of the sleeve
We proceed from the assigned tasks. The farther the welding torch is used from the semi-automatic machine, the longer the sleeve should be. Typically the length varies from 3 to 5 meters. Masters prefer to take with a reserve, which will certainly come in handy, if not now, then in the future. But all this is individual, because some are convinced that the shorter the sleeve, the less energy loss.
Semi-automatic aluminum welding
Any of the presented torches can be used when welding aluminum. For correct operation, we recommend that you replace the steel guide channel with a Teflon channel. The Teflon channel has better sliding and is harder, which does not allow the aluminum wire inside the cable to twist and break.
In addition, when choosing a conductive tip for welding aluminum, we recommend following a simple rule: choose a tip diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the aluminum wire.
This is due to the fact that when leaving the tip, aluminum expands greatly and if the diameters match, the welding wire may stick in the tip.
Principle of operation
The included gas torch for the semi-automatic machine is an actuator for producing a welding seam in a shielding gas environment.
Gas burner for semi-automatic machine
The operating principle is as follows:
- The torch is placed to the base metal at the arc formation distance.
- Before the arc starts, shielding gas is supplied to the welding zone for a few seconds.
- Voltage is supplied to the current-carrying tip, and accordingly to the electrode wire.
- In the welding arc, the electrode wire melts and drops with the gas flow into the weld pool.
- When the torch moves along the elements being connected, a weld seam is formed.
- The protective gas environment ensures a high-quality and clean seam.
During welding work, torch elements are exposed to high temperatures. Particularly affected are the gas nozzle, the current carrying tip and the electrode holder, also called the diffuser and gas divider.

- insulating ring;
- electrode holder;
- current carrying tip;
- gas nozzle.
Failure of, for example, the current-carrying tip prevents the supply of welding wire to fill the pool.

Torches for semi-automatic welding (MIG-MAG)
Torches for semi-automatic welding
This section presents gas torches for performing welding work in a shielded gas environment in a semi-automatic mode, related to the MIG method, arc welding with a consumable electrode (welding wire) in an inert gas environment. The main purpose of the torch for a welding machine is the formation of an electric arc, as well as the supply of shielding gas and electrode wire to the combustion zone. The filler wire is fed automatically using a special device and passes through the gas diffuser and the contact tip of the torch.
The gas burner consists of:
- working nozzle;
- contact tip for supplying welding current;
- handles with protective gas supply tube and input for welding wire.
The burner nozzle is in constant interaction with the molten metal. This can lead to metal adhesion and disruption of the technological process. Burner manufacturers use various methods to eliminate this phenomenon:
- nozzle polishing;
- chrome plating of nozzle;
- making the nozzle from special ceramics that are resistant to high temperatures.
To ensure long-term operation of the nozzle, it is cooled by air or liquid.
Tips for supplying welding current are made of various conductive materials: copper, bronze, copper alloys with graphite and tungsten. At a higher cost, copper-tungsten tips are the most durable.
offers products with various characteristics designed to work together with semi-automatic machines from different manufacturers. All of them are distinguished by high quality, ergonomics and long service life. The price of welding torches for semi-automatic machines is reduced due to direct supplies of products from manufacturers. Gas torches BARS Mig, EVO Mig, MB GRIP, Mig ERGOPLUS, Mig MAXI 450, RF, TBi, A-1231, GDPG are presented for use with various semi-automatic welding machines. Ease of maintenance
All burner parts wear out sooner or later and require replacement.
The wearing parts of the mig torch include the nozzle, diffuser and contact tip.
. They are responsible for the passage of shielding gas and are the front zone of the welding system and directly affect the quality of the weld and the performance of the equipment.
For high-quality welding, it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the internal hole of the contact tip. It should not be excessively worn. You should also clean the inner surface of the welding nozzle and diffuser from splashes so that they do not interfere with the flow of shielding gas.
