Gasoline for a chainsaw: which one to choose and why mix it with oil?

Structurally, the engine of new chainsaw models has from one to two cylinders, the fuel supply to which is regulated by a carburetor. Since the engine shaft rotation speed is quite high (in some models it reaches 14 thousand rpm), strict requirements for the fuel mixture are established. In the technical documentation for a specific chainsaw model, the manufacturer describes the composition in detail, indicating possible tolerances. Let's consider what kind of gasoline to pour into a chainsaw, as well as in what proportions it is allowed to be mixed with additives and oil.

Features of the chainsaw device

The main working unit of a chainsaw is a mounted chain with cutting elements, to which rotation is transmitted from a carburetor-type engine. The most commonly used are single-cylinder two-stroke engine models, which are distinguished by their reliability and good resistance to loads.

The most important structural parts of a chainsaw, which do not depend on a specific model:

  • Carburetor;
  • Tire with chain tensioner;
  • Chain cutting unit;
  • Launch block;
  • Clutch basket with centrifugal type;
  • Ignition system – magneto and spark plug;
  • Oil supply for chain;
  • Exhaust gas removal system;
  • Knobs for adjusting the number of revolutions.

The location of the motor is selected depending on the load on the tool - for professional use it is located vertically, and in simple, household models - horizontally.

Operating principle - the main shaft is connected to a motor, which transmits rotational motion at high speed. Through the clutch, the shaft transmits angular velocity to the sprocket connected to the tire. The bar, in turn, drives the saw chain.

Is it possible to mix gasoline 92, 95 and 98. Different gas stations and manufacturers

Probably everyone at least once filled up with 92 gasoline, and then 95 or 98. And then they drove around and suffered - what will really happen? After all, there are many tales and myths on the Internet that the engine will almost immediately shut down. That the difference is global and this cannot be done! But really, let’s think about whether it’s really possible to mix, say, 92 and 95 or 95 and 98? What consequences will there be, what will happen in the end and how will the car react to this. I’ll try to tell you with my fingers, as usual there will be a video version. What we read and watch...

Friends, I have already written many times about fuel and in particular about 92 and 95 gasoline and which is better. BUT there was no talk about mixing. YES, and often drivers try not to put water in their tank, there’s just no reason to do so.

At the very beginning, I would like to say - what type of car is designed for, that’s what you should use! You shouldn’t huddle and fill the “smaller unit”. Usually the manufacturer indicates it on the tank, in the instructions, or even on the instrument panel. Sometimes there are frames, for example from “91 to 98”. BUT often no less than 92. For convenience, this article will take this into account.

What fuel should I use for my chainsaw?

The primary document in which the type of fuel is written is the manufacturer’s passport. Usually, a specific type is always indicated there (with options for acceptable replacement), and instructions for preparing the fuel mixture are also described in detail. These parameters are individual for different types of engines, so you should not fill the tool with a mixture prepared according to the instructions for another model.

What kind of gasoline to pour into a Stil chainsaw or a Husqvarna chainsaw:

  • Only well-refined high-octane fuel;
  • Be sure to dilute it with a special brand of oil in the required proportion;
  • Some models require the addition of additives.

Gasoline selection

Quite often you can come across a question from owners of gas-powered tools about what type of fuel will improve the performance of the unit. As a rule, manufacturers give recommendations on the use of gasoline with an octane number of at least 90. In practice, these are fuel grades AI92 and AI95. It is not recommended to use fuel with higher octane numbers, or to fill 95 gasoline with 92..

Please note that it is better to refuel the chainsaw with newly purchased gasoline, since long-term storage in inappropriate conditions causes the fuel to decompose, which significantly deteriorates its quality. The most well-known chainsaw manufacturers give the following recommendations:

  • STIHL - only high-octane fuel from AI90;
  • PARTNER – a mandatory requirement to use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90;
  • HUSQWARNA – pure gasoline grades AI92 or AI95.

Oil selection

To operate a chainsaw, you need to buy two types of oils - motor oil and chain oil. They differ in their physical and chemical properties, so they cannot be interchanged. Designed for the following tasks:

  • Motor oil - to create a protective oil film on the contacting parts of the engine;
  • Chain oil – to protect the cutting surface of the saw chain.

When an engine is running with a mixture of gasoline and motor oil, the carburetor injects fuel and oil mist, which creates a protective film on the working surfaces of the engine that prevents wear. It is recommended to use motor oil from the manufacturer that produced the chainsaw, but if there is no strict indication in the passport, then you can use any that is intended for two-stroke engines.

To apply lubricant to the chain, it is also best to take oil from the manufacturer of the gasoline tool, but if it is not available, then the type closest in terms of characteristics is gear oil.

Recommended sequence

In accordance with the standard technology for preparing the fuel mixture, the calculated amount of oil is poured into a tank half filled.

The mixture is thoroughly mixed with the plug closed, after which the remaining gasoline is poured. This sequence contributes to the homogeneity of the resulting composition.

It is advisable to prepare fuel for a chainsaw in quantities sufficient to perform one-time work. The finished composition can be stored at a standard temperature of 20°C for no more than one month. At higher temperatures, the shelf life is reduced to 2 weeks.

An expired mixture initiates the formation of resinous compounds, which contribute to clogging of the jets, the formation of carbon deposits and limiting the mobility of the piston rings. In order to save money, the overexposed composition can be consumed by adding up to 15-20% of the total volume to the fresh mixture.

Refueling a chainsaw

The process of loading the fuel mixture into the instrument’s gas tank is quite primitive - you need to unscrew the neck and pour gasoline through the filter element. The main questions are about preparing a mixture of gasoline and oil. Here it is necessary to maintain the correct proportions according to the recommendations provided by the manufacturer. It is necessary to fill the chainsaw only with a mixture with the correct ratio of components, as this affects the life of the engine.

Gasoline to oil ratio

Regulatory documentation adopted in the Russian Federation defines the standard ratio of gasoline-oil mixture used for two-stroke engines - 1/50. When calculating according to the rules of proportion, it turns out that 10 milliliters of motor oil must be dissolved in 0.5 liters of gasoline. This is a basic value that each manufacturer changes based on the design features of its engine. It is recommended to use only the composition instructions reflected in the instrument data sheet.

There are other proportions for gas-powered tools that are actively used by foreign manufacturers, for example:

  • 1/60 – 8.25 ml of oil is added to 0.5 liters of gasoline;
  • 1/33 – 15 ml of oil is added to 0.5 liters of gasoline.

It is impossible to independently determine the proportion of fuel depending on the type of engine.

How to mix the fuel mixture correctly

Initially, it is necessary to prepare containers and measuring instruments with the required accuracy. All utensils must be clean and free of other ingredients, dirt or water.

A graduated canister will do, as will a regular 10-20 mg medical syringe. Pour gasoline into the canister up to the mark, and then use a syringe to add the calculated amount of engine oil. After this, the canister is closed with a screw cap and mixed with forward movements for 3-5 minutes.

Work must be carried out in a well-ventilated area. Do not use a plastic canister due to the potential for spark formation (and subsequent fire) due to static electricity.

Storage conditions for the finished mixture

Do not store the gasoline-oil mixture for a long time due to the possibility of decomposition of the components and deterioration in quality. The optimal storage period is no more than 90 days.

It is necessary to use opaque canisters for storage; it is advisable to maintain the room temperature at 15-20 degrees and not place the mixture near heating devices (or other heating surfaces). It is necessary to ensure conditions in which the mixture is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Useful tips

Experts and manufacturers do not recommend preparing large volumes of fuel and storing it for a long time. Oil and gasoline can “behave” differently in a mixture, it all depends on the brand, quality, degree of additives and additives. Oxidation and crystallization processes occur. The result can be disastrous and incur additional financial costs for the user: incorrect operation or engine failure.

Fuel is prepared for a maximum of three refuelings, mixed in containers made of metal or durable plastic. Ordinary plastic breaks down when it reacts with gasoline, spoiling the composition of the fuel and creating the risk of sudden ignition.

Gasoline consumption and operating time

An important issue is the gasoline consumption of a chainsaw, because the user must understand what to expect.

The volume of fuel tanks is approximately 0.5 liters. When the power of the device is 2 kW, the consumption of gasoline and oil will be about 1.2 l/hour. Translating into a language understandable to the user, the chainsaw can operate uninterruptedly at maximum speed for about 30 minutes. Less powerful devices have a smaller tank volume; gasoline consumption is controlled by the owner independently. Over time, you will learn how to independently service this household unit. The main thing is to maintain its performance and use only high-quality fuel. Mixing must be done in compliance with safety rules so as not to harm your health or the environment.

Alternative fuel option

As an alternative, many are offered to refuel with AI95 gasoline, but the issue remains controversial. In theory, the characteristics of such fuel are better, but in practice it is better not to take risks and refuel the chainsaw with the usual Soviet AI92.

The main nuance is that AI95 contains additives that are individually selected by the fuel manufacturer. In some cases, such additives can adversely affect the performance of a two-stroke engine.

Summing up

In order for your chainsaw to serve for many, many years, never fill it with old gasoline, and you don’t need to use grade ninety-five, much less ninety-eight gasoline, only 92, to make the fuel mixture. Also, don’t forget about the purity of gasoline—no dressing up!

I hope now you are not wondering which gasoline is suitable for a chainsaw and which is not so good.

Risks of using fuel and oil substitutes

In the technical documentation for chainsaws from any manufacturer, you can find a warning that refueling the engine with biofuel and gas condensate surrogate is prohibited. This is due to the unstable characteristics of such fuel, which can significantly damage the engine and reduce its service life. If you pour such a mixture into a chainsaw, it will void the manufacturer's warranty.

In addition, there is a risk of purchasing low-quality motor oil, the market for which, according to some estimates, is 10-12%. In order not to buy low-quality oil, it is recommended to use only trusted stores, preferably approved by the chainsaw manufacturer.

Purpose of the oil

Since the two-stroke engine is not equipped with a lubrication system, it is necessary to fill the chainsaw with a pre-prepared mixture of gasoline and special oil . On domestic models, the brands M8, M12, MGD-14M are often used. Well-known foreign tool manufacturers insist on using their own brand of oils, which are developed in collaboration with leaders in the oil refining industry. But practice shows that replacing one high-quality oil for two-stroke engines with another does not negatively affect the performance and service life of the equipment.

According to the method of production of the motor oil base, they are divided into:

  • mineral;
  • semi-synthetic;
  • synthetic.

In this list they are listed in ascending order of quality and price. Therefore, if you fill a Husqvarna chainsaw with synthetic oil for a Stihl chainsaw, it will not notice the difference.

How much gasoline does a chainsaw consume?

Professional models with good engine power (up to 7-10 hp) consume up to 3.5 liters per hour in normal operation. The same figure for low-power units (3-5 hp) is much less and ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 liters per hour.

It is recommended not to pour fuel into the chainsaw to fill the entire volume available in the tank at once. This must be done in portions.

New models of chainsaws are very sensitive to the quality of the fuel used. It is important to understand that using the correct and high-quality mixture has a serious impact on the service life.

What to fill the trimmer with?

1) To refuel the trimmer, pure gasoline not lower than AI-92 and high-quality oil are used. The oil must be special for air-cooled two-stroke engines.

Benefits of branded oils

You can also find branded oils on sale, which are characterized by their specific performance characteristics.

The advantages of branded oils include the following points:

  1. Higher quality.
  2. Increased lubricating properties.
  3. Can be used to refuel most foreign chainsaws.

However, increased characteristics determine that the product of foreign manufacturers has a higher cost. That is why many, in pursuit of savings, try to refuel their foreign chainsaws with a product from domestic manufacturers, making a serious mistake.

How to properly break in a new saw

Run-in refers to the process of grinding in the cylinder-piston group of an engine. Shtil chainsaws do not require running in, because... These parts are ground in using a special technique at the factory.

Not a single cheap analogue has this; all the instructions say that the first 2-3 tanks need to be consumed with a fuel mixture with a high oil content. The instructions for Shtil MS 180 do not say anything like that, not a word about running in. By the way, you can read in more detail about running in Chinese chainsaws here.

To calm your soul, you can work for the first 2-3 tanks without increased load and work with increased rest intervals. For example, we saw for 15 minutes, then switched off for 20 minutes, rested - let the engine cool down.
