How to choose a gas cutter for metal and concrete: TOP 13 popular gas cutters

Powered by gasoline | 12/14/2015

Essentially, a gasoline grinder is a hand-held, autonomous circular saw. Only instead of electricity, gasoline is used here, which gives the tool power and performance. But on the other hand, it adds weight and dimensions. So in what cases will this tool be useful to us? Let's find out!

History of the name

Knowing why the saw is called a grinder, let's delve a little into the history of the common name.
This instrument was first supplied to the Soviet Union back in the 70s. The importer was the socialist republic of Bulgaria, friendly to the USSR. Soviet users of the tool, seeing the name of the country of manufacture on the nameplate, soon dubbed the saw itself a grinder. The direct manufacturer of the device was the Sparky Eltos company. It must be said that it continues its work even now. You can easily find Sparky brand products on the market for similar products.

I must say, today this brand is not particularly relevant. On the market, his products are classified as semi-professional. However, in cost they are not inferior to professional tools produced by such well-known brands as Bosch, Hitachi, Makita. However, Sparky has ardent followers who prefer devices only from this manufacturer.

Another explanation for why the grinder is called the grinder. In the seventies, goods shortages were at their peak in the USSR. Therefore, on store shelves there were only tools from the Bulgarian supplier Sparky. Since there were no other importers or manufacturers, the device was destined to receive the capacious name “grinder”.

If we turn to the history of those years, we will see another fact that contributed to the establishment of this name for the instrument. Why is the grinder called that? At that time, many Bulgarians came to Soviet construction sites. Many workers also had their own tools with them.

Today, similar instruments in everyday speech are usually called the same. Grinders will be devices of both domestic and any other foreign production.

How to disassemble an angle grinder

How to disassemble a coffee grinder? Not such a complicated process

This does not require special knowledge, but everything must be done carefully and carefully. Every owner should know how to disassemble any work tool, because from time to time it needs to be cleaned of dirt and dust, and this depends on its durability

Currently on the market you can choose different types of grinding machines, which differ in operating parameters, sizes, and quality. Manufacturers are also different. No matter what model of sander you buy, there is one assembly model for everyone.

Having prepared a screwdriver, you can begin disassembly:

  1. Unscrew the screws from the case and remove one side of the product.
  2. Remove the nut that holds the disk, unscrew the bolts of the protective casing.
  3. Remove brush.
  4. Disconnect the wires from the motor.
  5. We unscrew the bolts that secure the gearbox inside and very carefully remove it, we also remove the rotor.
  6. Unscrew the stator mounting bolts and remove it.
  7. We put the coffee grinder back together, put everything in the reverse order and start it up.

When disassembling your sander, it is important to remember how to remove the parts in order to reassemble them correctly.

How to hold an angle grinder while working

The correct grip of an angle grinder will largely ensure competent and safe work with the tool:

The handles of the grinding machine must be held firmly with both hands, without transferring its center of gravity to any one. With a secure grip, even in the event of a reverse strike, there will be no serious displacement of the tool, much less tearing it out of your hands. The power cord must be positioned away from the rotating blade; getting caught in it will create a risk of short-circuiting and causing the tool to stop abruptly, possibly causing kickback. The cutting line should be positioned in such a way that the grinder faces the master, and the person should not be in the plane where the disc is likely to fly apart. In this case, the direction of the sparks is possible both away from the master and under him - everyone decides for himself. There are no options for left-handed people - when gripping an angle grinder, the only way convenient for a left-handed person is that the sparks will flow “under themselves”

And a mandatory rule is that there should always be a bucket of water nearby to extinguish a possible fire caused by sparks. It is forbidden to put the tool down anywhere until the rotation of the working disk is completely stopped, otherwise objects and planes not intended for processing may become caught. If it is necessary to move the grinder from one place of work to another, it should be turned off, since any careless movement of the master (stumbled, swayed, fell) can lead to unpleasant consequences: injuries, seizure of foreign objects, clothing, etc. The working disk heats up significantly during work, and, of course, you should not touch it until it cools completely.

Rules for personal protection when working with dangerous tools

Working correctly with an angle grinder, without putting yourself in danger, is possible only if you are extremely collected and attentive. You should not even pick up the device if you are unhealthy, tired or drunk. Inattention can cost you dearly when using a sander. In some cases, negligence results in very serious injuries and sometimes death of the negligent technician.

The main condition for proper operation of the tool is the use of glasses and a protective casing. Working with an angle grinder necessarily leads to the scattering of sparks, metal fragments, scale and abrasive particles. If you do not protect your face and eyes, there is a high chance of injury. It is best to use a mask or closed-type glasses. The fragments and sparks from the angle grinder fly along complex trajectories, so they can fly under the glasses if in some part they do not fit tightly enough to the body. It is best to use a mask with a safety net, since during operation there is a possibility of fragments being separated from the circle, which fly at high speed and can pierce unreinforced protective equipment.

Now all new angle grinders are supplied with a casing, which is required for use

The first barrier standing between the grinder operator and the rotating wheel is the safety guard. In practice, wheels quite often break during operation, which usually occurs due to the wheel jamming in the slot. The casing is secured to the tool in such a way that it protects the person from sparks and possible fragments if they occur. The casing must be secured to the machine as securely and firmly as possible in order to completely eliminate the possibility of its spontaneous rotation. Of course, working with the cover is more difficult and less convenient than without it, but by removing this protective shield, you expose yourself to unnecessary danger.

To work with an angle grinder, you need not only a casing and a protective mask, but also hand protection - mittens or gloves. Your hands will be very close to the rotating circle, so they should be protected from sparks and all kinds of fragments. We recommend using thick leather mittens or gloves to protect your hands; cotton products cannot reliably protect you.

When processing concrete and stone materials, it is also necessary to use a special respirator - it will protect the respiratory tract from dust. All your clothing should be loose and well tucked in; any loose clothing could be caught in the high-speed circle and cause injury.

Backlash

The most common and dangerous moment of working with an angle grinder is the occurrence of a kickback, which is characterized by an instant and very sharp throw of the tool towards the operator. The force of the impact can be so great that it is simply impossible to hold the grinder in your hands - this is especially dangerous if work is carried out at head level. Kickback injuries can be so severe that they are sometimes fatal.

The cause of kickback may be the use of a non-working (deformed or damaged) working disk and/or its jamming in the material. Very often, a kickback occurs at the final stage of cutting, when all that remains is to modify the last layer of material connecting the parts being cut. In this case, it is recommended not to complete the cut on the same side, but to complete it on the other.

Safety precautions for preventing the occurrence of a kickback or at least minimizing its consequences for humans contain several simple rules:

  1. It is unacceptable to use equipment not intended for an angle grinder:
  • a circle with a larger diameter, since to install it you will have to remove the protective casing and during use the linear speed of the cutting edge will exceed;
  • a saw blade that is completely unadapted to the speed of rotation of the angle grinder - a carbide tip flying off from its tooth at cosmic speed can become a fatal bullet for a careless craftsman.
  1. The operator must stand firmly with both feet on a firm, level surface to withstand the impact energy.
  2. Extreme care should be taken when handling sharp edges, edges of material and any corners. You must be prepared for the possible kickback of the angle grinder and move your body away from the intended location of the impact as a result of a reverse strike.
  3. If the working disc is jammed, the grinder should be turned off and the cutting disc should be removed from the cut.

Safety precautions and understanding of the principles of working with an angle grinder guarantee high-quality performance of assigned tasks without causing any injuries or harm to human health.

How to make a nozzle with your own hands

Making a grinder attachment yourself is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. Even if you have all the necessary elements, two pulleys, a belt, a shaft with a disk mount and an old tire, you will need to tinker with getting everything into place.

Below is a photo of a real copy of the nozzle, made by yourself.

At first glance, everything is fine, but if you look closely, you can see that the belt is installed on top of the standard clutch cup. Such a design will not be able to work normally, because the belt will constantly fly off. It needs to be modified by installing a pulley instead of the clutch. The rest of the design is not bad, everything is taken into account, right down to the tension mechanism.

There is another option for making a gas cutter, which is to install an adapter for attaching the cutting disc directly to the clutch, i.e., refuse to use a tire or other extension. This is exactly the option shown in the video below.

The video shows how after starting the engine, the gas cutter disk immediately begins to rotate, this means that the clutch does not work. Using a tool without a clutch is dangerous and inconvenient.

Base plate

The sole of a gasoline vibrating plate, as the main working element of the machine, must meet the following requirements:

  • sufficient mass;
  • high wear resistance;
  • optimal working area.

Sufficient mass and area of the sole allow for high-quality compaction, at the same time, these parameters increase the overall weight of the mechanism.

The material for the working platform is cast iron or steel. Cast iron with the addition of nodular graphite has a higher degree of elasticity compared to the base material, and a longer service life of the tamping platform. Steel is used in the form of sheets, with a thickness of 8 mm, or rolled profiles.

When working with paving slabs or paving stones, a rubber or polyurethane mat is placed on the sole of the gasoline vibrating plate. Such measures will avoid shock loads on the material undergoing compaction.

The working platform of the vibrating plate has rounded edges, facilitating smooth movement, and is reinforced with stiffening ribs.

The best premium gas cutters

Among the premium gas cutters, we can highlight the Husqvarna K 760 model. It is the leader in our rating, as it has a huge cutting depth and is a universal tool. However, its price is unlikely to be suitable for a budget buyer. Typically, the device is used in professional practice for large volumes of repair or construction work.

Engine

The tamping device is driven by a motor. Depending on the motor power supply, a manual vibrating plate can be:

-gasoline;

-electric;

-diesel.

Electrical devices are strictly tied to the energy source, although they have low noise levels and do not pollute the air. An electric vibrating plate is more suitable for indoor or landscape work. Can be used in preparing cable trenches or road works. Powerful rammers consume a significant amount of electricity, which is also not acceptable.

Diesel vibration machines are very powerful, massive and are used in professional construction work involving large areas subject to compaction and requiring a significant depth of material compaction. In severe winter conditions, using diesel fuel can be inconvenient.

The gasoline vibrating plate is a universal and common machine in the production of compaction work. A manual gasoline vibrating plate is positioned as an inexpensive, mobile and low-maintenance machine. It is used in landscaping work, road construction, cable laying, and in the construction of buildings and parking lots.

The gasoline engine with which the unit is equipped is 4-stroke, one- or two-cylinder. The most common brands of gasoline for refueling engines are AI-92 or AI-95. There is no need to add oil to the fuel; it is air cooled. All this together makes a gasoline vibrating plate the most attractive tool for a wide range of work on compacting bulk materials.

Choosing a good gasoline grinder

A gasoline-type grinder is a construction tool in demand among professionals and amateurs. Used in places where there are no electrical networks. We will look at popular models and give important criteria for selection.

An angle grinder (angle grinder) powered by combustible fuel (petrol grinder, gas grinder, wall saw or gas cutter) is a hand-held tool for professionals and DIY enthusiasts. It is used when performing dismantling, construction, emergency rescue work, in mechanical engineering and in everyday life for cutting materials of different hardness and origin. Essentially, it is a circular saw that can be used to perform a wide range of operations away from power sources.

The main criteria when choosing a gasoline angle grinder

When selecting the required model of such a popular tool among builders and emergency services, the role of the manufacturer is great, but it is also necessary to pay attention to the following indicators and factors:

  • power;
  • maximum depth of cut;
  • working volume of the tank;
  • fuel consumption;
  • cutting disc diameter;
  • engine's type;
  • start time;
  • continuous operation time;
  • design features.

All this must correspond to the conditions and intensity of use, since convenience, efficiency and safety depend on this.

It must be remembered that a gasoline angle grinder is a tool that requires special safety measures. It is necessary to work in glasses, a mask, gloves, a helmet, and earplugs. Clothing should not restrict movement, and shoes should be durable.

The video shows an example of working with a Husqvarna gas cutter model K 970 Ring:

Trusted manufacturers

When purchasing a gasoline grinder in a retail chain, professionals and amateurs try to buy a product that would serve them for a long time and without failures.
Below are manufacturers who have proven themselves in this segment, and their devices are highly productive and safe to operate. Models of petrol grinders from the Swedish company Husqvarna Construction are famous for their diversity and quality of execution. They are distinguished by a thoughtful design and a variety of technical characteristics.

Models of the Japanese company Makita ek are compact, with a recognizable design. This is a sought after tool. It is produced with a power of 3.3÷6.1 l/s, while the weight does not exceed 10.8 kg.

The German company Stihl has five models of ergonomic gasoline angle grinders with a capacity of 4.4 to 6.8 l/s.

The Hitachi company from Japan is a well-known brand in many countries, as is its product line, in which gasoline angle grinders are examples of quality, convenience and a high degree of safety.

In addition, many Russian and foreign companies produce a number of specialized gasoline grinders to perform specific jobs. These include:

  1. A rail cutter that allows you to eliminate faults in rail tracks on tram and railway tracks.
  2. Chain petrol cutter. Equally well separates products made from alloy steel grades and granite boulders.
  3. Furrowmaker. The design feature of this tool is the presence of two cutting discs. Popular with builders and electrical power professionals. With its help, a special groove is cut for laying cables, pipes, and installing tiles.

Accessories[edit | edit code]

circles) are used as attachments

) and brushes secured with a threaded fastener to the angle grinder spindle. Typically the spindle has an external M14 thread. The brushes have an internal thread and are attached directly to the spindle. The circles only have a through hole and require a flange and clamp nut to attach.

Discs used to operate an angle grinder

There are circles

for processing various materials, including steel, aluminum alloys, stone, ceramic tiles, etc. Typically, the composition of the wheel allows it to be used only for certain materials, and, depending on this, they are marked with different colors:

  • orange – for cutting bricks;
  • blue – for concrete and marble;
  • green – used for cutting granite;
  • gray – cuts tiles and ceramics;
  • yellow – alabaster and tiles.

The most commonly used cutting wheels are of different thicknesses and for different materials.

End flap wheels are designed for grinding the surface being processed.

Brushes are designed to clean surfaces from dirt, such as rust and paint. The bristles of the brush are made of steel, brass or nylon. Brass brushes are softer and wear out faster, but they do not spark or leave scratches on steel surfaces. Nylon brushes can be used on wooden surfaces.

Facts about the instrument

Knowing why an angle grinder is called an angle grinder, it would be useful to consider the device itself. An angle grinder is a power tool, a type of grinding machine. Its main application is abrasive processing. This includes grinding, cutting, and cleaning metal, stone and other materials. Angle grinders are widely used in wood and metalworking and construction.

The body is shaped like a cylinder. Often equipped with a side handle. Contains the following elements:

  • UKD (universal commutator motor).
  • Gear angular transmission.
  • Start switch.
  • Disk mounting unit.
  • Some models have a disc speed control.

Attachments are special abrasive discs and brushes. Usually it's the following:

  • Circles whose composition allows the attachment to be used only for a specific material - steel, ceramics, aluminum, stone, etc.
  • Cutting wheels of various thicknesses.
  • Flap end wheels for grinding.
  • Brass, steel or nylon brushes for cleaning surfaces from dirt.

Types of Diamond Cups

Depending on the number and shape of diamond segments, all diamond cups are classified into several types. Each disk is designed to work in specific conditions, therefore it has a different purpose and scope of application.

  1. A cup with segments arranged in one row has low weight and high performance. However, it is quite difficult to keep it on the surface being treated.
  1. A cup with segments arranged in two rows does an excellent job of roughing. Its special profile allows you to quickly and effectively remove any defects from the surface of concrete, natural stone or sandstone. The cup performs rough processing of the material, so to obtain a perfectly smooth surface you will have to finish the job with another attachment.

  1. Diamond bits of the “Square” type are heavy and designed for rough processing. During operation, in addition to grinding, there is the effect of chipping the surface being processed, which speeds up the process and reduces wear on the cup. In most cases, this type of nozzle is used to prepare the surface for coating with various polymer compounds. “Square” is a fairly rough cup, after processing which the surface becomes rough, which increases adhesion to other materials.
  1. The “Typhoon” diamond cup performs roughing and grinding work on super-dense and hard types of material. It has high wear resistance and a long service life with a low dead weight. The special shape of the disc ensures effective removal of material particles resulting from grinding.
  1. The segmented “Turbo” model is an almost continuous row of diamond inclusions, ensuring accurate surface grinding. It is advisable to use the nozzle in places where good surface quality is required. With it you can easily make chamfers and edges on marble and granite tiles. It is often used by stone engravers when creating figured stone monuments. It is also quite convenient for her to “bring out” the various curves of the stone slab. For precision processing, nozzles with a diameter of 100 mm can be found in specialized stores. It is used by people involved in stone processing at a professional level. It can also be noted that these cups have a long service life.

  1. Model "Boomerang". When performing finishing work, you must handle the material carefully. This is why professionals choose boomerang cups for these purposes. Small diamond inclusions make it possible to carry out delicate processing. This type of attachment is not inferior in performance to double-row cutters and works more steadily and softly, and therefore has gained particular popularity among craftsmen.

How does the cutting process take place?

For good cutting, it is necessary that the edges of the disk rotate at the required speed when moving. The wheel will not cut well if the speed is less than the set speed. All discs are designed for certain speeds; if they are exceeded, a danger arises, which consists of increased vibration. The circle can simply fly apart.

The rotation frequency of grinders with different diameters is also different. Grinders with a smaller diameter will rotate at a higher speed.

The dependence of rotation speed on the diameter of the circle is given in the table

No.Disc diameterFrequency rpm
1Small diameter - 115 or 125 mm.10000-11000
2The average diameter is 150 or 180 mm.8500
3Large diameter – 230 mm.up to 6650

This frequency was not chosen by chance. Laboratory studies show that the linear speed of the circle edge should be less than 80 m/s. Otherwise, the disk may fall apart, which will lead to serious consequences. It is necessary to very carefully monitor the rotation speed of the grinder and the disc placed on it.

But since the rotation speed of wheels 115 and 125 is the same, a smaller disk with a diameter of 115 can be installed on an angle grinder with a seat diameter of 125. On a grinder with a 180 diameter, you can put a wheel of 150 diameter.

Based on the above, you cannot put grinded wheels from a large grinder on a small grinder, although the casing will not be removed, but since the rotation frequency of the large circle is lower, and the grinder itself is higher, the disk will be destroyed.

Design features of a gas grinder

Engine. First of all, a gasoline angle grinder is convenient because it allows you to carry out work at a distance from the power source. To achieve this, the design was equipped with a fuel tank and a powerful two-stroke internal combustion engine, which provides high torque under load. This, in turn, allows for effective deep cutting of high-strength materials: brickwork, porcelain stoneware, concrete and reinforced concrete, boulders, stone masonry, steel structures. In this case, large diameter discs are used - 300 mm, 350 mm, 400 mm.

The V-belt drive with reduction factor provides an average speed of 4350 rpm. Although the two-stroke engine was specially invented for higher speeds and 9500 rpm. This is normal for him; work often uses reinforced grinder discs, which fail at high speeds. Three-stage filtration system. Such an air filter is the next advantage of a gas grinder, since it is often used in extreme conditions. At the first stage, the centrifugal force of air pushes out up to 90% of large particles; at the second stage, the remaining debris is retained by an oiled foam rubber sponge filter; the third stage is a large paper filter.

Decompression valve. During startup, it allows the pressure in the combustion chamber to be reduced. The valve also helps to blow out a flooded spark plug and also reduce the cable pull during startup. Considering that engine displacements are 60 cc and larger, this option is quite useful.

Wet cutting function. There are no issues with dry cutting: start the starter and get to work. But many - especially professional - gas grinders are equipped with the ability to wet cut; this function is necessary for the tool to work with concrete and asphalt. It becomes possible when cooling tubes are connected to a special disk casing. During operation, water simultaneously hits the material being processed and the cutting disc. Because of this, it lasts much longer, the engine is not loaded, and dust does not clog the device and does not hang in the air. A gas grinder with a wet cutting function is more expensive, but the disc lasts 2-3 times longer than with a dry cut.

Ease of movement. The petrol grinder weighs a lot and some models have to be moved with a special trolley, on which a container is attached to supply water during wet cutting. The use of the trolley is convenient when cutting road and floor coverings. The accuracy of the cut and its depth are ensured by the adjustment mechanism.

Disc position. The necessary option to change the cutting angle will be in demand in cases of work in places with limited space.

Paging.

After a long break in operation, a fuel booster pump (primer) will make starting the engine much easier.

Lubrication. In work situations with increased loads, automatic lubrication of bearings increases their service life.

Latch.

It is located on the casing and stops rotating in cases where the disk is cracked or deformed.

Compensator. This device prevents the carburetor from being oversaturated with fuel when the air filter is clogged. Thanks to this function, the engine power remains constant throughout the entire operation.

Ergonomics.

Market leaders make the handles of petrol grinders from vibration-damping material, and the engine is mounted through a system of shock absorbers. The prices include narrow bodies, which are convenient to work with in hard-to-reach places.

Varieties

In addition to the obvious division of devices into household and professional, there is a classification of grinders according to the principle of operation. The main difference between the models is the power source.

Network

This is the most common type of angle grinder, which is used both in everyday life and in professional activities. The advantages of such models are light weight, abundance of attachments and low price. Disadvantages include mobility (you can only work with the tool at a distance of the length of the wire, which is why you have to constantly carry an extension cord with you) and the inability to use without access to electricity.

Rechargeable

Such models, unlike the previous ones, can work without access to the network. Therefore, they are used, for example, on the street or in those rooms that are not yet connected to electricity.

But in addition to the obvious advantage, autonomy also has several disadvantages: such devices are much more expensive than network devices, and their operating time is limited by battery capacity. In addition, most often only small circles can be installed on them.

Pneumatic

A very convenient option that does not depend on electricity at all. Such an angle grinder will function as long as the user can press the air supply lever. In addition, it does not make sounds (only from processing the material), and is easy to maintain and repair.

Gasoline

Can also be used where there is no network connection. However, due to the presence of a gasoline tank, such devices are heavier than previous options, but this is compensated by high power ratings. They can accommodate large discs and show high performance, making cutting bulky structures much faster and easier.

What is the correct name for a grinder?

From the above it becomes clear that the name “grinder” is common. But this tool has a term that precisely defines it. The grinder should correctly be called an angle grinder, or angle grinder for short.

Why this name?

  • Grinding, because there are a large number of grinding attachments for this tool. And although it is more often used for cutting work, using cutting discs for metal or stone, there are nevertheless much more attachments for grinding.
  • Angled, because the shaft on which the attachments are attached is located at an angle of 90 degrees to the body, unlike a straight grinder, where the shaft is parallel to it.

Now you know where the name “grinder” came from and how to correctly call this instrument. You may also be interested in learning how to choose an angle grinder. You can also find information on this topic on our page.

Mini-grinder: although small, but very remote

The key feature of mini-grinders is the large number of their modifications. Because of this, choosing a specific model can be quite difficult. The main difference between a miniature angle grinder and a large angle grinder is the size of the disc.

A mini grinder does not require additional handles

Mini grinders differ in the following parameters:

  • engine power levels;
  • speed;
  • weight;
  • size;
  • options.

Dimensions are the main difference between small devices and classic cars. Mini-sizes imply a standard set of angle grinders with a set of necessary elements. Thanks to various grinding or cutting wheels and complementary parts, the capabilities of the device are only expanding.

Due to the versatility of small machines, various tasks can be performed with a high degree of precision. The mini-unit is able to cope with jewelry work, while classic devices simply cannot do it.

Despite the fact that the cordless mini-grinder and the regular-sized tool are equipped with similar functions, it is worth noting that the first device is endowed with many positive qualities. For example, a small unit is easier to hold in your hand. The employee will not suffer from physical fatigue while performing long operations.

The main difference between a mini grinder and a large one is the size of the disc.

Mini-guns do not even require the presence of a protective rim. However, compliance with safety rules has not been canceled. Regardless of the dimensions of the device, technical requirements must be met.

Thanks to the absence of an electrical cable, working with an angle grinder turns into a very convenient process. Speaking of which grinder to choose, 125 mm (meaning the size of the circles) is an excellent option

However, when choosing tool dimensions, it is also important to take into account the processing material. For example, when working with metal, it is better to give preference to disks of the minimum size

At the same time, a wood grinder can be equipped with larger parts.

Factory attachments

Currently, you can purchase a ready-made factory attachment for a chainsaw, which will make the tool multifunctional. There are no problems with installing such a device if you follow the instructions and select it in accordance with the model of your existing chainsaw

It is worth paying attention that factory attachments are not universal, and manufacturers do not always indicate the entire list of suitable saws, so it is easy to make a mistake when choosing

Thanks to the versatility of the chainsaw, its range of applications can be significantly expanded and used not only for its intended purpose, but also as a pump, drill or even a motor for a small boat. The range of nozzles is represented by the following models:

What can this tool do?

A classic grinder is a hand-held power tool with an abrasive wheel. The main purpose of the grinder is to process the joints of flat metal surfaces. However, it can be used for other operations. The main wheel is perfect for cutting sheet metal, end trimming pipes and fittings. By simply replacing the working wheel with a disc with sandpaper, the sander turns into a polishing machine. You can use a grinder in this capacity by processing pipes for railings, flat or curved surfaces to a mirror shine. In addition to metal work, a grinder can be used to cut ceramic tiles. To do this, you need to use a concrete circle as a working disk. The list of operations that can be done using an angle grinder is very wide.

Each type of material requires special discs for its processing:

grinding disc for metal 5-6 mm thick;

flap sanding disc;

cutting wheel for metal 2 mm thick;

cutting wheel for concrete and ceramics with a diamond edge;

cutting circle for wood;

chain wheel on wood.

Gasoline grinder. Passes where others stand!

Essentially, a gasoline grinder is a hand-held, autonomous circular saw. Only instead of electricity, gasoline is used here, which gives the tool power and performance. But on the other hand, it adds weight and dimensions. So in what cases will this tool be useful to us? Let's find out!

The invention of the "grinder"

The construction of the world's first angle grinder began in Germany. In 1954, a tool appeared at one of the German factories that we are so accustomed to calling “grinder”. Grinding machines have come a long way to arrive at the modern angle grinder. First there was a machine that operated using a foot pedal. It did not at all resemble a modern “grinder” in appearance, but the functions were similar. By the twentieth century, a portable grinding machine appeared, vaguely reminiscent of a huge ancestor. Next up is the first manual grinding machine. Now its size was not so large, it became more convenient to work. And so, in the middle of the twentieth century, the first corner-type machine appeared, familiar to almost all of us.

Modern models of angle grinders differ significantly from the first inventions. Angle grinders from the domestic manufacturer InterSkol have enormous innovative potential. Every year, new functions are invented that make working with the tool much easier and increase safety. There are brushes with self-shutdown and speed controllers.

History of the name

The name “grinder” for an angle grinder appeared not so long ago, in the 1970s. At that time, the USSR had a lot of imported items from neighboring countries, since purchasing them was much cheaper than producing them. Angle grinders, for the most part, were imported from Bulgaria. In addition, Bulgarian workers, coming to the USSR to work, brought this tool with them. In common parlance, the term “angle grinder” has switched to the simpler “grinder”. This is how the instrument continues to be called today.

Lesser known titles

In addition to the “grinder”, the instrument had several other interesting nicknames:

"Fortune"

One of the first models of angle grinders to appear on the territory of the USSR was called “Fortune”. It immediately gained immense popularity due to its convenience and versatility. In the ears of the migrants who brought such grinders to the country, it was called nothing less than “Fortune”. This is how the name stuck.

"Monkey"

This nickname is little used in everyday life; it appeared as a joke. There was a legend among workers that working with such a tool would lengthen your arms. As a result, they become similar to the limbs of monkeys. The joke spread among people, and the angle grinder became a “monkey.” This is how this humorous name stuck among the people.

"Turbinka"

Another humorous name. The fact is that angle grinders during their work produced a sound similar to the sound of an aircraft turbine. Walking past factories where they worked with sanding machines, one would think that the workers were preparing the plane for takeoff. In the workshops of the Soviet space, the angle grinder became a “turbine”. This name is not very popular, but you can still hear it today.

"Flexi"

This name is rarely heard in Russian-speaking countries, but in Europe almost everyone will understand which instrument you are talking about. This name appeared a long time ago, around the 1930s. The first grinding tools began to be produced in Germany. Around the 30s of the twentieth century, the MS-6-flexen model, a manual grinding machine, appeared there. The nickname “flexi” stuck to this model of instrument. With the advent of the first angle grinders in the 50s, the term was transferred to them. The model left, but the “nickname” remained.

It is surprising that the same instrument has many nicknames and names. The angle grinder owes its abundance of nicknames to the people. People from different cities can talk about the same instrument, but call it differently. Thanks to this article, you can avoid misunderstandings.

Batteries without “memory effect”

Cordless angle grinders are equipped with the most energy-intensive batteries available at the moment - lithium-ion (Li-Ion). The latest models of lithium-ion batteries are also compact in size and light in weight.

In a number of modern models, full charging occurs within 30 minutes, and the presence of an additional battery allows you to avoid downtime. The conditions for recharging Li-Ion batteries do not affect their capacity and service life.

That is, the “memory effect” is completely eliminated, and they can be recharged regardless of the degree of discharge and not necessarily to the end. The self-discharge level does not exceed 5%.

Among the disadvantages is strong heating during charging, which requires certain protective measures that increase the cost. Lithium-ion batteries do not like any kind of shocks, falls, or freezing temperatures. Protective measures affect their price.

Features of grinding with a diamond cup for an angle grinder

In order to improve the quality of grinding and increase the service life of cutters, the following recommendations should be followed:

— the first few square meters of work area with a new cup should be carried out in a gentle manner for its proper running-in;

— before direct grinding, it is necessary to carry out roughing work to remove excess sections of stone in order to reduce the load on the more delicate nozzle;

— contact of the cup with sharp edges of the material should be avoided, as in this case the nozzle will wear out much faster;

— surfaces that have ripples and cracks are prohibited from grinding;

— it is necessary to supply water to the place where the tool is used to self-clean the nozzle and reduce the amount of dust formed in the air during processing;

— during grinding, the cutter must be pressed against the surface being processed, but not pressed;

— the grinder should be held firmly with both hands to avoid impacts, because they have a negative effect on the attachment and reduce its service life;

- It is prohibited to operate faulty equipment, as well as during frequent power outages.

Thus, diamond cups are an effective tool that copes well with the processing of any concrete products. Each type of cutter has a specific design that is suitable for working with specific structures and materials.

Ergonomics of the design of a cordless angle grinder

When choosing a tool, you should pay attention to the thickness of the protective casing and the possibility of adjusting its position. more convenient than one fixed with a clamp with a tightening screw and nut. Different protective covers for grinding and cutting should be included.

The design of the body and the quality of the materials from which the tool is made affect the ease of use, and therefore indirectly its safety. You can verify the ergonomics of the model only by holding the tool in your hands. And best of all, dressed in mittens

Since, according to safety precautions, the “grinder” is used in mittens, it is important to feel the contact with the tool even through the protective layer. This means that corrugated rubberized coatings should be preferred to slippery plastic.

For the same reason, it is better to take the tool with large and embossed buttons for starting the engine and locking the spindle.

How to choose the right tool?

Only a well-chosen attachment makes it possible to process the material efficiently and quickly. In addition to individual characteristics, the diameter of the mounting holes must correspond to the parameters of the angle grinder used. The standard diameter of the nozzle is 125 mm, and the diameter of the mounting holes is 23 mm.

In addition to power, an important indicator is the rotation speed of the angle grinder shaft. The operating speed must be commensurate with the maximum permissible number of revolutions of rotation of the nozzle. The more accurate this ratio is, the safer the work.

The nozzle comes with an adapter ring, thanks to which the cup can be installed on any equipment. Using one or another disk model, you can carry out both regular roughing and final polishing work.

When choosing a cup, you should also pay attention to its weight and balance. In addition, only a cup that has a good heat dissipation mode can last a long time without losing its technical properties

Areas of application

At first, a gasoline grinder was used by special rescue services, but today any craftsman can buy this unit. In life, it serves in the construction and dismantling, repair of automobile and railway lines. Recently, it has become fashionable to decorate your site with products made from natural stone. An ordinary grinder will not work here, but a gas grinder will cope. There are also specialized varieties of petrol grinders.

  • Furrowmaker. Its peculiarity is the presence of two disks mounted in parallel. The wall chaser is designed to cut grooves of a certain width in the material for subsequent laying of pipes, cables, and even installation of stone tiles.
  • Rail cutter. This type of equipment allows railway workers to quickly eliminate faulty railway tracks. The rail is sawed in literally five minutes.
  • Chain cutter. Powerful motor, durable diamond chain, water cooling... With such characteristics, the chain cutter cuts both steel structures and granite boulders well. Outwardly similar to a regular chainsaw.

Stihl TS-800 – from RUB 71,990.

Shtil makes high-quality chainsaws, and gas cutters are not inferior in quality.
I like the Stil for its simple design and availability of spare parts. Familiar builders who are regulars at my service speak flatteringly about this and the younger 420 model. The main problem with calms is that they are counterfeited. Characteristics of Stihl TS-800

Design and principle of operation of an angle grinder

The design of an angle grinder is quite complex. What an angle grinder consists of can be understood by looking at the figure below.

The design of the machine can be divided into two parts:

  • electrical;
  • mechanical.

A simplified electrical diagram of an angle grinder looks like this:

The heart of the angle grinder is the AC commutator motor. The supply voltage is supplied through the stator winding via carbon brushes to the rotor commutator (rotating part) of the electric motor. The rotor contains sections of windings, the terminals of which are located on the rotor armature plate.

Bearings mounted in the housing are mounted on both sides of the rotor shaft. This ensures stable shaft direction during operation. The rotation of the electric motor is transmitted to a gearbox, which changes the direction of rotation and transmits torque to the cutting wheel.

The gearbox consists of two helical gears. The small one is put on the motor shaft, and the large one is on the gearbox axis. The working tool (circle) is attached to the part of the gearbox axis that extends outwards - the spindle. Professional models are equipped with a release clutch - it stops the rotation of the working part of the tool if for any reason the wheel gets stuck in the material being processed. Without such a coupling, the disk of the circle may break and fly into fragments in different directions. Part of the surface of the circle is covered with a protective casing that protects the face and hands from sawdust and dust flying from under the cutting edge.

The working circle is secured to the spindle with a quick-release nut using a special wrench. The immobility of the spindle when tightening the nut is ensured by a button on the side of the gearbox housing opposite the circle. The plastic body of the angle grinder has longitudinal slotted holes. They cannot be closed during operation; the electric motor is cooled through them.

Checking and repairing the collector

To inspect the collector, it is necessary to remove the rotor, disassembling the housing and gearbox. When grooves are identified on the commutator, it is turned on a lathe, and minor damage is removed by grinding. To grind the surface of the commutator, the rotor shaft is fixed in a drill chuck, and grinding is done with glass paper. When carrying out grinding and turning work, beating and displacement of the center of the workpiece are not allowed, and before work it is necessary to remove the bearings from the rotor shaft.

After carrying out the work, you need to clean the surface with a soft cloth and remove burrs on the lamellas.

Additional technical parameters

Structurally, manual gasoline vibrating plates can be manufactured with reversible or non-reversible stroke. Irreversible or forward-moving machines move in one direction; changing gears is done manually using wheels. Reversible machines can move forward and backward.

For working with asphalt, the units are equipped with an irrigation system. A convenient feature that prevents excessive adhesion of the asphalt mixture to the base.

Concern for the health of the machine operator is manifested in the provision of shock absorbers to the handle of the unit. This attribute reduces the impact of vibration on the worker’s body.

The choice of vibrating plate depends on the possible scope of use of the device. Depending on this, the weight, power of the unit and its equipment are selected.
