Steel 08kp is a popular low-carbon alloy used in various industrial sectors. Due to its low price, ease of production and unpretentiousness in processing, this type of steel is used for the manufacture of steel products for mass use. It has high ductility and impact strength, so it is not used in the production of critical parts. Steel 08kp is not an alloyed corrosion-resistant alloy, which limits its scope of application to external operating conditions. Steel 08kp is boiling in terms of the degree of deoxidation, has a porous structure and a large number of impurities compared to grades 08 and 08ps, as well as a lower price and simplicity of the production process.

Characteristics
Steel 08kp unalloyed carbon structural quality steel. Unalloyed means that alloying additives in its composition are present in small quantities that do not affect the properties of the metal. Such steels are susceptible to corrosion and are not used in aggressive environments without a special protective galvanic or paint coating.
The carbon content is low, such steels are characterized by high ductility and toughness, they are well processed and have unlimited weldability. In contrast, low carbon content leads to a decrease in the strength and hardness of steel, making it unsuitable for use under high mechanical loads.
Structural means that its scope of application is parts of mechanisms and structures. Such steels are popular in construction and mechanical engineering; they perform different tasks depending on the performance characteristics of the material. Low-carbon steels are considered soft due to their ductility; they are not used in mechanisms and structures subject to wear.
Qualitative means that the content of harmful impurities of sulfur and phosphorus in the alloy composition is no more than 0.035%. Sulfur and phosphorus significantly worsen the characteristics of steel, making it brittle at high and low temperatures (red brittleness and cold brittleness).
The letters kp indicate a low degree of steel deoxidation. Boiling steels are porous, clogged with gases, of lower quality, but cheaper, and can be stamped well.

Marking
The brands have become very similar, and this is reflected in their markings:
- 08 means the amount of carbon in the alloy in hundredths of a percent. In this case, both brands have 0.08%. According to this indicator, they belong to low-carbon steels.
- PS stands for “semi-calm.” This means that the steel has not been completely deoxidized, that is, a certain amount of oxygen remains in the alloy.
- Yu, oddly enough, means "aluminium". This is the additive with which the alloy was alloyed and which gave it its properties. The absence of an additional figure indicating the percentage of aluminum in the alloy indicates that this content is less than 1% (usually from 0.02% to 0.07%).
Thus, by the name of the steel, we can determine what properties this or that brand has, what specific loads it can withstand, and what processing methods it is more suitable for. And if you decide to order a 08Yu roll, it is better to know in advance whether it is suitable for your purposes.
GOST 16523/9045 determines the permissible limits in the production of rolled products from different types of steel.
As mentioned above, the “U” index in the name tells us that the steel was alloyed with aluminum (that is, it was added to the alloy). What does this give?
- Firstly, aluminum is very good at removing oxygen from steel. As a result, the impact strength of the metal and its fluidity increase. In the thickness of the material, the grain size decreases, which automatically increases the heat resistance of steel and products made from it.
- Secondly, although aluminum itself cannot significantly change the final properties of the alloy or give them a new level, its absence in the composition significantly worsens the mechanical and physical properties. So even a small amount of this element makes the alloy much stronger overall.
Steel 08Yu in rolls and sheets is purchased for production by cold stamping. It is used to make parts for hydraulic systems, pipes of different diameters, various elements for the manufacture of bearings, products for mechanical engineering, etc. In a word, such products that require the material to be capable of complex and particularly complex drawing.
Products from this brand can withstand heavy loads and are used in the most critical components. For greater strength, they are usually hardened and tempered.
Actually, the addition of aluminum also aims to increase the hardenability of steel, that is, the depth to which hardening penetrates into the product.
Steel 08PS (in galvanized and pure form) is a structural steel of ordinary quality. Manganese is added to it (up to 0.65%) and quite a bit of silicon for deoxidation (in the case of semi-mild steels, the amount ranges from 0.07% to 0.12%).
If it is necessary to increase the corrosion resistance (and this alloy is not very high compared to many other brands), then chromium is also added. Another method is galvanizing at the stage of rolled steel production: for supplies to industries that use rolled steel as a raw material, the cost per sheet of galvanized steel 08PS is lower than when purchasing more expensive grades.
Due to its simpler composition, ordinary quality structural steel is much cheaper than improved and alloyed grades. For industries that do not have strict requirements for strength and resistance to different types of loads, this option is more preferable because it can significantly reduce the cost of products.
Steel 08PS in rolls is sent to production facilities that do not use additional heat treatment of products. It is ready for stamping and cutting, and welds very well due to its low carbon content.
However, if it is necessary to harden the product, or carry out any other heat treatment, then this is also quite acceptable and possible. Hardening followed by tempering and annealing eliminates stress in the thickness of the metal and makes the structure more uniform.
Interpretation and chemical composition of steel grade 08kp
08kp steel consists of 98% iron, the remaining 2% is carbon and minor impurities not mentioned in the marking due to the low concentration in the composition.
- Steel - this word in the marking means that in terms of the concentration of harmful impurities (sulfur and phosphorus), the steel is of high quality. Carbon steels are divided into ordinary quality steel (steel at the beginning of the grade), high-quality steel (steel at the beginning of the grade), high-quality steel (A at the end of the grade) and especially high-quality steel (SH at the end of the grade).
- 08 indicates a carbon content of 0.08%, it is a low carbon mild steel with low strength and hardness, but high ductility and toughness.
- boiling point indicates a low degree of deoxidation of the alloy, respectively, a high gas content, porosity, and heterogeneity of structure.
The composition of 08kp steel includes chemical elements not indicated in the marking. At high concentrations, these additives change the properties of steel, but at low concentrations they do not have any noticeable effect.
- silicon is one of the main components of alloy steels, it has a positive effect on the strength and elasticity of the material, increases scale resistance, corrosion resistance, and reduces susceptibility to acidic environments;
- manganese participates in the deoxidation process, reduces the ductility of steel, but increases strength and hardness;
- copper strengthens the material and protects it from corrosion;
- arsenic is a harmful impurity that negatively affects the overall characteristics of steel;
- nickel steel with the addition of nickel resists corrosion better, is easily calcined, becomes durable, and does not lose its ductility;
- sulfur is the most harmful element, the high content of which leads to red brittleness;
- phosphorus is a harmful impurity that makes the metal cold-brittle and prone to brittleness when the temperature drops;
- chrome Chromium plating of steel makes it stainless, harder, but less ductile.

Price for steel BSt1kp
The favorable price for the BSt1kp steel grade is explained by the presence of a competitive environment, low markups and loading from leading metallurgical plants directly, sometimes bypassing storage at transshipment points. Metalpro company bears full responsibility for the chemical composition of the supplied products and guarantees the quality of delivery. The cost of BSt1kp steel in warehouses in Moscow and the Moscow region is determined by the costs of warehousing and logistics. Metallpro Company can also supply BSt1kp steel directly from the metallurgical plant, which gives our partners an advantage to consistently save money and develop their business in a broad format.
The price for steel grade BSt1kp is determined personally with each company, monthly needs are individually negotiated and the form of payment is discussed. Warehouse services for custom-made items and logistics to the production site also form the cost of BSt1kp steel. The Metalpro company maintains an open dialogue personally with each of its clients; each transaction is accompanied by a personal manager from the production stage to the delivery of rolled metal to the customer. Full control at any stage from payment to delivery to the customer’s site gives the latter a complete picture.
Purpose and application
Steel 08kp structural steel, its design purposes, parts, mechanisms. Due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, and manufacturability, steels in this category are intended for structures and products for mass use. The main consumer industries are construction and mechanical engineering. Steel 08kp is boiling steel, it is inferior to calm and semi-quiet steel in terms of mechanical characteristics, therefore it is not intended for the manufacture of critical parts. However, the low cost of boiling steel, the simplicity and waste-free nature of its production, and good machinability make it indispensable in the production of unloaded structures.
In construction, 08kp steel is used for the manufacture of metal structures and corrugated sheets. In mechanical engineering, it is used to make parts for non-critical use, gaskets, bushings, and washers that are not subject to increased loads. Fasteners, pipes, cylinders, lugs, forks, rods, etc. are common. Parts made of steel 08kp can be subjected to chemical and heat treatment.
Galvanized steel 08PS, 08Yu in rolls GOST 16523/9045
Structural steels are widely used in industry in the manufacture of various parts, mechanisms, engineering and construction metal structures. There are quite a lot of them, brands differ in composition and properties.
In this case, we are interested in alloy grades, using the example of steel 08PS (galvanized and regular), and carbon grades of ordinary quality, using the example of grade 08Yu. Both are in great demand on the market and are well suited for use in large mechanical engineering and other areas.
Types of mechanical processing
- Cleaning. It is recommended to carry out as preparation for any metal processing. It is performed on machine equipment or with hand-held metal brushes, depending on the size of the product and other circumstances. Regular cleaning allows you to preserve the product longer, because... prevents the aging process of metal.
- Cutting. Necessary to give the product the desired size or shape. 08kp steel cuts well, it is recommended to carry out the procedure on a machine or manually (with press shears).
- Flexible. Giving a product a certain shape, for example, a spiral or roll. It is carried out using machine or homemade equipment. Factories use drive machines.
Types of heat treatment of steel 08kp
Using heat treatment, the characteristics of the metal are improved; this is a universal, proven method that does not require special financial costs. Heat treatment helps prepare the product for use; it is also used before or after welding.
- Hardening. During hardening, steel is heated to a temperature above the critical point, after which it cools sharply. This procedure is used to increase the strength and hardness of the outer layer of metal, the thickness of which depends on the hardenability index. As a result of hardening, steel loses its toughness and ductility; tempering is used to restore these properties of the material.
- Vacation. The process of heating metal in a furnace to a certain temperature and slowly cooling. Depending on the heating temperature, tempering can be low-temperature (from 150 to 250C), medium-temperature (from 350 to 500C) and high-temperature (from 500 to 680C). Tempering allows you to reduce internal stress, as well as increase the ductility and reduce the fragility of the hardened metal.
- Annealing. Unlike the two previous types of processing, during annealing the steel is not only heated to a certain temperature, but also maintained at this temperature for some time, after which it is slowly cooled. Thanks to annealing, the metal structure becomes uniform, internal stresses are eliminated, and hardness is reduced, which facilitates subsequent machining.
Main characteristics and properties of steel 08PS
Negative in the floc sensitivity category.
It has increased strength and there is no risk of brittleness during tempering. There are no restrictions when carrying out the process of welding parts, which does not require heating and further temperature treatment.
The following types of welding are possible:
KTS, RDS, ADS, provided by the use of gas. Since 08ps steel is difficult to weld, in order to achieve the required level of connections that are created by welding, it is necessary to resort to additional measures. The metal must be heated to certain temperatures - from two hundred to three hundred degrees - an important condition of the technological process, after which an annealing operation and additional heat treatment are provided.
The forging temperature of steel is 08 ps: at the start - 1250, at the end of forging - 800. Sections up to 300 mm are cooled in air.
Steel 08 ps, being a fairly strong, reliable and hard metal, is capable of withstanding quite large loads, without losing its shape or deforming. Thanks to these features of steel 08 ps, it is highly valued and used in a wide variety of parts, tools, designs. Under a certain load on steel 08ps, the metal can “react” in different ways: without changing
The shape either becomes slightly deformed, accepts the load and returns to its original state after the load is removed, or maintains the changed shape after the load is removed. In this case, the shape of the changed part must remain constant, and the state of the metal part itself will become “stressed”.
Difference from steel 08ps
Steel 08ps in terms of the degree of deoxidation is semi-quiet or partially deoxidized. It contains fewer impurities, is better welded, and has a more integral and less porous structure. This alloy is considered to be of higher quality, it is more expensive and a little more difficult to produce. However, in actual application there is not much difference between the two brands. Both alloys demonstrate good weldability, and both lend themselves well to cold forming and other types of steel processing. In the production of mass-produced products, in most cases, alloys can be interchangeable.
