Chainsaw “Husqvarna” 236: features, characteristics and do-it-yourself repairs

The Husqvarna 236 X Torq chainsaw is an excellent household tool from the famous Swedish brand Husqvarna. In terms of its technical and functional advantages, it is considered the successor to the earlier Husqvarna 137 model.

As a basic analogue, it is not designed for commercial use - in logging sites, woodworking industries. The ideal areas where this chainsaw has found its application are gardening, landscape design, lumber procurement, repairs and construction at a household level of complexity. Thanks to innovative technologies, this unit can be used both outdoors and in closed, unventilated areas.

The Husqvarna 236 chainsaw is a unity of environmental friendliness, efficiency, modern design solutions and the best European traditions of lumber production.

Switching system design

A key role in any chainsaw is played by a two-stroke carburetor power unit. Its power directly depends on the chosen model and purpose. The second important mechanical unit in the device is the saw part, which consists of a bar, cutting chain and sprocket. The parameters of these components may vary.

Treatment with lubricating mixtures is carried out using special oil, which is poured into a specialized reservoir, which is located on the hand block. Separately, it should be noted that the volumes of the oil tank and fuel are calculated in such a way that their contents, as a rule, end at the same time.

Troubleshooting options and methods

Regardless of the brand of chainsaw - Champion, Husqvarna 236 or Patriot, the reasons for poor performance are identical. There are a lot of options why the Shtil chainsaw won’t start, but the most common are the following.

Chainsaw doesn't start well when cold

If the saw does not start well when cold, it means there is no compression. This occurs due to abrasion of the rings due to prolonged use. It turns out that when the user tries to start the Champion 137 in a cold state, the compression will not be enough to carry out this manipulation.

In this case, it is not recommended to systematically pull the handle. In the end, the unit will still start, but other mechanical components may break down. In this situation, you need to replace the worn rings with new ones.

Chainsaw won't start when hot

Here the reasons lie in engine flooding and wet spark plugs. Here's what to do in this situation:

  • move the air damper to the middle position;
  • Blow the component parts well;
  • start the device for 10 seconds;
  • switch to idle mode;
  • on a caliber chainsaw or another model, fully open the damper.

Next, simply start the engine at idle speed by pulling the handle. If the engine does not overheat, it will start easily.

If this troubleshooting option did not help, it means that the motor has already cooled down significantly. Fix the half-gas according to the recommendations from the instructions and repeat the operation.

You should also try turning the cold speed screw in a clockwise direction. The higher the rotation speed in the equipment, the easier it is to start it. You should know that the chain must remain stationary at idle.

VIDEO: Why the saw does not start or stalls and how to fix it

The chainsaw has difficulty starting and immediately stalls

In this situation, the cause is the filling of the spark plugs with gasoline at the moment when the user tried to turn on the unit. A small amount of fuel accumulates under the spark plug electrodes, which is why there is no spark in the equipment.

Removing the candle and drying it thoroughly will help solve the problem. In addition to these actions, you can additionally carry out heating. But this manipulation should be carried out exclusively using a gas burner. Otherwise, a small deposit may form in the area of the electrodes. After the spark plugs have completely dried, you need to drain off the excess fuel and leave the equipment itself to dry.

Chinese saw won't start

It should be noted right away that Chinese devices do not have any distinctive features from other analogues. They are just as reliable and productive, and also cost less. The only thing that is necessary individually for this device is to use only branded oil and fuel.

Most units do not work well with fuel from domestic manufacturers; gasoline clogs the channels and, as a result, fuel does not flow to the engine. Use fuel either of high quality or from the manufacturer of the saw itself.

Why doesn't the new saw work?

New equipment should not have problems with wear and tear on functioning mechanical parts, since the model has just left the assembly line. Such untidiness may arise if you purchase demonstration equipment that has been used more than once to advertise the company. The reason may also be improper operation of the unit, which does not comply with the recommendations from the instructions.

Husqvarna chainsaw repair diagram

First of all, you should check whether all the parts and components are installed in their places. Also, for example, Husqvarna will not start if it has been filled with a fuel mixture prepared without taking into account the required proportions.

But if all the recommendations are followed, every detail is carefully fixed in its place and the equipment was not purchased from a stand, the buyer probably received a defective device.

There is not enough fuel in the tank or it is of poor quality

This is one of the most common reasons. Users of gasoline vehicles, in order to save money, often use budget fuel. At first, the unit will perform its job properly, but the problem will certainly arise after a few months of operation.

To sum it up...

Definitely, every item we buy has its own expiration date and sooner or later it breaks, and it becomes a shame when the degree of its breakdown is so great that it cannot be repaired. But you must admit that quite often we are simply negligent in our use of technology (see about proper operation and how to properly cut down a tree so that it falls in the right direction), and when it stops working, then we try to find ways to fix the breakdowns, resulting in a huge number of services.

But remember that even though the equipment breaks down, we can extend its “life” . All that is necessary is to simply take care of it, break it in after replacing parts (read how chainsaws are broken in here) and keep its spare parts clean and tidy. And then, undoubtedly, it will serve for many more years. It is also important to use exclusively high-quality spare parts and “additives” (see attachments for chainsaws). Then your equipment will work smoothly, and you will simply forget what repairs are.

We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Shtil ms 180 chainsaw.

There are several different reasons why a chainsaw will not start: the device may be faulty, there may be a lack of sufficient fuel, or problems with its supply. Often the problem can be fixed with your own hands. In some cases, specialist help may be required.

Reasons for lack of spark

On the engine of each chainsaw there is, in fact, a miniature power station. It receives the primary impulse for the spark on the candle from the jerk of the starter cord, from muscle energy.

Next, energy is generated by rotating the magnetic rotor while the engine is running due to fuel combustion. In theory, problems with spark formation can occur along the entire line of the system, from energy generation to its transmission through wires and conversion into a spark on the chainsaw’s spark plug. In practice there are fewer weak points.

Causes of a weak spark

A weak spark on a chainsaw is a relative concept. Most often, there is either a spark and the ignition is working properly, or there is none at all. With modern chainsaws with electronic ignition, the spark visually appears weak.

On older models with a mechanical cam breaker, the spark was large and distinctly blue. On modern models with electronics, it is noticeably smaller and paler, often yellowish in color. Therefore, when you need to make sure of its presence, it is better to do it in the shade. In direct sunlight it is almost invisible.

How to make sure there really is no spark

To make sure there is a spark on the chainsaw or not, you need to follow a simple procedure:

  1. The top cover on the case is removed.
  2. Carefully, with a grip at the very bottom, so as not to tear off the spark plug wire, remove the cap from the spark plug.
  3. Using the 19 mm socket wrench included in the kit, unscrew the spark plug counterclockwise.
  4. The cap is put in place, on the candle.
  5. The thread or nut of the spark plug is “grounded,” that is, pressed against the metal cylinder head. To ensure reliable contact, the spark plug is pressed against the cylinder using electric pliers, a screwdriver with insulated handles, or a hand wearing dielectric gloves. This should not be done with your bare hand. If the cap is punctured, you can receive a painful shock from a high-voltage discharge (up to 40,000 V at a weak current of up to 80 milliamps).

Place the chainsaw on the ground, press it to the ground with your foot and lightly pull the starter cord. At this time it will be clear whether there is a spark or not.

Troubleshooting algorithm

In all other cases, the search for ignition problems begins from the end and in order. After each step, check the spark.

  1. Replace the old spark plug with a guaranteed working one.
  2. If the model has a removable spark plug cap, remove it, and the exposed spark plug wire is connected to ground with a gap similar to that of a spark plug. They pull the starter. If there is a spark, the problem is in the cap. She is being eliminated.
  3. Change the spark plug wire where it is possible to remove it from the source.
  4. Visually inspect the wires from the switch. Vibration or contact with metal can cause damage. If there are friction points, the wire is replaced, even if there is no external damage to the insulation. You can use a tester or multimeter to check the wire.

This is where minor and easily fixable problems end. If the problem is not solved, then the reason is more serious. Modern coils and ignition systems on most chainsaws are very reliable. They are designed to last even longer than the entire chainsaw as a whole. There are no mechanical moving parts like older cam systems. They are sufficiently insulated from clogging and moisture.

If, due to an accidental manufacturing defect, an interturn short circuit occurs in the coil or the electronics fail, these parts cannot be repaired. Will need to be replaced with new ones.

It is not uncommon for a mechanical failure to occur. Due to wear or destruction of the crankshaft bearing, play appears on it. And then the magnetic rotor begins to touch the body of the ignition system, inside which it rotates. This is a serious breakdown. You will need to “halve” (disassemble) the entire engine, replace the bearing, and put everything back in place.

Modifications

Husqvarna 240 has two modifications, these are Husqvarna 240 e series and Husqvarna 240 e series TrioBrake.

In the e series configuration, the saw is additionally equipped with a Smart Start system, which is designed to make it easier to start the chainsaw, as well as hinged fuel and oil tank covers, and a chain tensioning system without the help of an additional key. Essentially, the Husqvarna 240 e-series is a luxury version of the basic chainsaw model.

Husqvarna e-series TrioBrake is also a luxury model of the 240, only additionally equipped with innovative TrioBrake technology, which protects the operator in the event of a kickback. Upon external inspection, it is very easy to identify a chainsaw equipped with this system because it has an additional lever in the area of the handle under the right hand, which is responsible for activating the saw chain brake during a rebound.

The video below provides a description of how the system works and why it is needed.

Troubleshooting Tips

Fuel transfusion and filling of a chainsaw spark plug can be one-time and accidental. For example, “over-pumping” with a pump cap (primer): the engine does not start immediately, the operator presses his finger on the cap again and again, tries to start it, then pumps it up again.

In this case, the reason is not at all in the carburetor. You need to unscrew the spark plug and ventilate the combustion chamber by pulling the starter cord several times, as when starting. The candle is wiped, dried on the flame of a gas burner or burner, or another one is used. They check the spark, put the spark plug in place. They try to start it first without choke.

If it does not start after 3-4 jerks, press the pump cap 2-3 times. They try again. That is, after an overflow, it is better not to pump up the fuel first, but to pump it up incrementally. Until the engine starts.

Candles sometimes require their own maintenance and care.

  • Inside, around the insulator, there should absolutely be no soot or dirt.
  • The contact between the electrode and the plate from the spark plug body is cleaned with “zero” sandpaper. Carefully, without rounding the end of the electrode.
  • You need to know the recommended spark plug gap indicated in the instructions for each chainsaw model (from 0.5 to 0.65 mm or more).
  • To accurately adjust the spark plug gap, special feelers are used - a fan-shaped set of plates of different calibrated thicknesses, which fold into a handle like a folding knife. Sold in auto tool and spare parts stores.
  • When working in winter, it is better to store the chainsaw at low temperatures. When taken out of the heat and into the cold, a sharp temperature change can cause condensation to form everywhere, including in the ignition system, and this is harmful.

One of the reasons for the lack of spark in a chainsaw is described in the following video, where they also talk about how to fix the breakdown:

Modern chainsaw ignition systems are quite compact and reliable. You just need to protect them from direct moisture, shock, and exposure to extreme temperatures. And then there will be no problems with the lack of spark during startup. Also, 1-2 spare spark plugs that are known to work will not be superfluous.

The main advantages of the Husqvarna 236 petrol saw are its durability, ease of everyday use and durability. The model has a high quality branded factory assembly and the ability to quickly and efficiently cut wood of any type. This makes the Swedish garden tool suitable not only for cleaning trees, but also for performing various tasks during construction and renovation.

The set includes:

  • keys and screwdrivers;
  • metal bar and chain;
  • tire cover;
  • user manual.

If desired, the buyer can additionally order branded oil for 2-stroke engines, a chain for a Husqvarna 236 chainsaw, as well as a bag made of waterproof fabric for transportation.

Preparing a fuel mixture for a chain saw.

Since the majority of chain saws available to consumers are equipped with two-stroke engines that do not provide separate lubrication of rubbing parts, it is very important to prepare the correct fuel mixture during break-in. It is prepared from gasoline and two-stroke engine oil in a certain proportion recommended by the chainsaw manufacturer

What gasoline should I use for the fuel mixture?

The basis is gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90. For Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other CIS countries, the optimal fuel option is AI-92. Avoid using questionable fuels, as well as using any additives that increase the octane number. Over time, additives lose their properties, and gasoline becomes of low quality.

Using fuel with a low octane number when running in and operating a chainsaw causes uneven engine operation and knocking. At the same time, there is an increase in engine temperature and an increase in the load on the main bearings. Imaginary savings most often lead to failure of the cylinder-piston group, requiring significant funds to restore it.

New chainsaw owners often have a question about what kind of gasoline to pour into the tool tank: leaded or unleaded? Leaded fuel is used to start an engine without a catalyst. If your saw has a catalyst (green gas tank cap), then use unleaded fuel.

What oil should I use in the fuel mixture, and in what proportions?

Two-stroke engine oil is used both for break-in and for continuous operation of the chainsaw. If you don’t want to take risks and experiment, then purchase the lubricant recommended by the tool manufacturers. As a rule, large companies produce fuel and lubricants for them to order. This allows the manufacturer of chain saws and other gas-powered tools to guarantee proper starting and trouble-free operation of their products.

Since branded oils for chainsaws Husqvarna, Stihl, Partner, Oregon, Jonsered are bottled from the same barrel, you can break in the tool with any of the following

In this case, it is very important to take into account the recommendations both in the instructions for oils and the recommendations of chain saw manufacturers. When using branded fuels and lubricants, when preparing the fuel mixture, follow the operating instructions for the gas-powered tool

Recommended proportions of fuels and lubricants when preparing fuel
Break-in chainsawProportionGasoline, (liters)Oil, (liters)
Husqvarna up to 1.5 kW1:4010,025
Husqvarna over 1.5 kW1:5010,020
Stihl up to 1.5 kW1:4010,025
Stihl over 1.5 kW1:5010,020
Partner1:4010,025
Partner1:3310,030

If branded oils are not available, you can break in a new chainsaw using third-party lubricants of the JASOFB or ISOEGB class. According to the instructions, the ratio of components is taken at the rate of 1:33. At the same time, the tool manufacturer does not recommend using four-stroke motor oils or two-stroke motor oils for water-cooled outboard engines, labeled as TCW.

The fuel mixture for a chainsaw to be run in should be prepared in a clean container intended for storing fuel and lubricants.

  1. Pour half the required gasoline into the container;
  2. Add required amount of oil;
  3. Gently mix the ingredients;
  4. Pour in the remaining gasoline and stir.

Adjusting the carburetor of the Husqvarna 236 chainsaw with your own hands

Setting up the carburetor of a garden tool is intended, first of all, to stabilize engine operation.

The following signs will alert the chainsaw operator to the need to perform this procedure:

  • increased smoke emission when the engine is running;
  • too high speeds when the internal combustion engine is idling;
  • low maximum speed and lack of required traction;
  • poor starting of a cold and hot engine.

In addition, in some cases, timely adjustment of the carburetor will be necessary after a major overhaul of the chainsaw.

To adjust the carburetor of the Husqvarna 236 chainsaw, its owner needs to act in the following order:

  1. First, on a saw with a cold motor, you need to set the fuel unit to the factory settings. To find out which position to move the screws to, you need to study the instructions in the operating instructions;
  2. Then you need to start the internal combustion engine and let it run until it warms up completely;
  3. Next, you need to start rotating the screw “L” clockwise until the most stable operation of the motor at high speeds is found. Immediately after this, the screw will need to be turned 1/4 turn counterclockwise;
  4. After this you need to pay attention to the chain. If it rotates on the bar, the saw operator must adjust the position of the "T" screw. To do this, you need to alternately turn it in different directions until the chain stops;
  5. In the end, all that remains is to set the engine to operate at maximum speed. To do this, you need to connect a tachometer to the engine and start rotating the screw “H”. As soon as the speed on the device matches the instructions in the saw’s operating instructions, the rotation of the screw will need to be stopped.

After this, you will need to check the operation of the Husqvarna saw. If the model’s engine quickly gains speed when you press the gas trigger, and also quickly loses it when you release the trigger, it means that the standard carburetor was adjusted correctly.

Why does the gas saw go out when I press on the gas: reasons and solutions

Often, chainsaw owners have to deal with their breakdown, and it does not matter what model of this type of equipment, since the nature of the failures is almost the same for all. Well, the chainsaw has stalled, so what next? Of course, you can include the equipment in specialized services that will repair your “iron friend” for a fee. But, as they say: why pay more?

In the end, you can personally disassemble the tool and repair it as the breakdown may be minor and you will have to pay a lot for this. But of course, in order to bring the tool back to life, you must be able to understand the reasons for its failure and how to fix it. So let's learn! In this article you can find answers to questions about situations when the tool simply throws after directly touching the gas. So let's get started.

Chainsaw Husqvarna 236 does not start

There may be several reasons for this failure. The first of these is that the built-in air filter is clogged. As a result of long-term operation of the saw, a large amount of debris and even small insects accumulate on the surface of the filter element. Because of this, the part stops passing the air required to enrich the fuel mixture. To solve this problem, you need to remove the filter and wash it in clean gasoline. After complete drying, the element must be put back in place and try to start the garden tool.

The second reason for the breakdown is a violation of the gap between the flywheel and the ignition coil of the Husqvarna chain saw. In normal operating condition, the distance between these parts should be 0.5 mm. If it is larger, then the chainsaw operator will need to remove the protective cover and adjust the gap using a special template.

Air filter dirty

It is quite easy to verify that the air filter is dirty. You just need to remove it and start the chainsaw without it - if the saw works normally, then that means it’s the problem and you just need to change it or wash it, depending on its type. And don’t be afraid that the chainsaw will work for some time without protection from dust - if there is no dust cloud around you, then everything is in order.

So, remove the air filter. To do this, you need to remove the cover from the top rear part of the chainsaw, which is attached either with screws, or simply with some kind of fastener that you just need to turn or snap off.

If the saw operates normally when the filter is removed after starting, it means it is dirty.

The air filter can be felt or nylon. The first resembles cotton wool or padding polyester, and the second looks like a fine mesh of nylon threads stretched over a plastic body. The felt one needs to be replaced with a new one, but the nylon one can simply be washed in soapy water, dried and put back in place.

Nylon filter

Felt filter

Well, we can continue to calmly use the chainsaw.

Chainsaw Husqvarna 236 stalls when you press the gas

Most often, this problem is encountered by owners who fill their saws with low-quality fuel. Due to harmful foreign impurities that are part of gasoline, the fuel pump of the saw quickly becomes clogged. This leads to the fact that when you press the gas trigger, the pump cannot instantly pump into the cylinder the amount of fuel that is necessary for stable operation of the garden tool.

To fix the problem, the saw owner will need to remove the fuel pump and inspect it. As a rule, pumps in Husqvarna 236 chainsaws cannot be repaired, so it is best to replace them with new elements.

To prevent further malfunctions with the Husqvarna saw pump, you need to fill the chainsaw only with a high-quality fuel mixture prepared with the gasoline specified in the model’s operating instructions.

Cleaning and adjusting the carburetor

If all of the above does not help, then, most likely, the carburetor needs to be adjusted or cleaned. It is not recommended to do these procedures yourself, since most often such attempts still end in a trip to the service center. So it’s better to go there right away and not disassemble anything yourself. But if you still want to dig deeper yourself, then it’s best to watch a video that shows how experts do it:

I will end here. Thank you for your attention! Read other articles on this site! See you again!
