Calm oil for 2-stroke engines: how to dilute

The ratio of gasoline and oil for a chainsaw

Household and professional chainsaws are powered by two-stroke internal combustion engines running on a dosed mixture of gasoline and motor oil adapted to difficult operating conditions.
The correct proportions of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw are one of the important conditions for stable traction characteristics of the engine and low-cost development of its designated resource. The need to obtain sufficiently high power from a small-cc power unit forces chainsaw engines to be operated at high-speed modes, so increased demands are placed on the quality of both components of the fuel mixture.

Alternative fuel option

To refuel household and professional chainsaws, it is recommended to use motor gasoline of the AI-92 type that does not contain alcohol components and additional additives. The question of whether it is possible to pour 95 gasoline into a chainsaw remains controversial to this day. Theoretically, the anti-knock properties of AI-95 gasoline are higher than those of standard AI-92 fuel, but in practice it is better to give preference to the second option. The problem is that in order to improve the anti-knock characteristics, manufacturers and distributors introduce additives into the composition of 95-grade gasoline, the quality and effectiveness of which raises reasonable doubts among experts. Such fuel does not fully meet the required characteristics and does not have proper stability during long-term storage. After 3-4 months of exposure, its working properties deteriorate by 25-30%.

Chainsaw characteristics

Every chainsaw has three main elements that make it work. These include a 2-pin carburetor engine and two tanks. One is filled with the fuel mixture, and the other is filled with oil necessary to lubricate the chain. The fuel tank capacity is 0.25 liters, which allows you to work without stopping for 45–55 minutes. The volume of oil is approximately two times less. With this volume ratio, the contents of both tanks end almost simultaneously.

When operating 2-stroke engines, an oil pump system is not used, so for the Shtil chainsaw, oil must be added to gasoline to lubricate the shaft, piston and other rubbing parts. Attempts to work on gasoline alone or failure to comply with the proportions specified in the instructions for preparing a fuel and lubricant mixture of two components lead to damage to the tool.

Why you need to adhere to the appropriate proportions when mixing

Having decided on the need to mix gasoline with oil in a chainsaw, you will need to find out why you need to adhere to the appropriate proportions when mixing the fuel mixture into a chainsaw.

  • If you fill in gasoline with a low oil composition, this will contribute to the development of all of the above consequences - engine overheating, scuffing of the CPG and jamming of the internal combustion engine. Only in this case the internal combustion engine will work a little longer than on pure gasoline.
  • If you fill the tank with fuel with a high oil content, then this is also dangerous, because in this case, in addition to strong smoke, carbon deposits will be observed on the cylinder walls, muffler and other parts. There will be a decrease in power and a decrease in the productivity of the unit. In this case, the engine will run longer, and if deposits occur, they can be removed.

To eliminate negative consequences, and at the same time increase the service life of the tool, it is recommended to understand how much oil should be added to gasoline for a chainsaw in order to achieve ideal engine operation.

Proportions for preparing the fuel mixture

Very often people ask the question how much oil per liter of gasoline is considered normal. It is easy to answer, because the instructions for any Shtil chainsaw, as well as on the packaging of the additive, indicate that when using original Shtil products, the proportions of oil and gasoline should be 1:50. This means that for one liter of fuel, you need to add 20 ml of additive.

During the break-in period of a new chainsaw, it is allowed to slightly increase the amount of oil per liter of gasoline. For example, you can dilute one liter, 25 ml of oil, this will reduce the load on the rubbing parts and extend the life of the chainsaw.

What does 1 in 25 mean?

First, let's define what the notation proportion 1 to 25 means. It means that there is one number that is twenty-five times larger than the other. For example, the number 250 is twenty-five times greater than the number 10 (250/10=25).

Shtil chainsaw oil

To begin with, it would be nice to mention that all Stihl chainsaws are created with rather small dimensions, but despite their dimensions, they have very impressive power. Thanks to this feature, Stihl chainsaws are in great demand.

Despite its high quality, the longevity of a chainsaw depends on the use of the correct lubricant and fuel. The first problematic question that owners of this equipment face is: What oil and fuel should you choose for your chainsaw? In this article you will learn about which oil is best to use for your chainsaw, and about which fuel is best to fill in your “baby”.

Choosing oil for a Stihl chainsaw

The first thing you should know is that almost all Stihl chainsaws are equipped with a carburetor two-stroke engine. They also have two separate tanks: the first for oil, and the second for gasoline.

First, and most importantly, remember that in domestically produced chainsaw models, simple oil is poured, which is usually poured into motorcycle tanks, and their proportion should be no more than 1 to 25. As for chainsaws manufactured abroad, for them you will need to buy branded oils, the proportion for which is 1 to 40. Of course, you can try to fill an imported saw with oil for domestic saws, in which case the power of your tool may noticeably drop. The best advice that can be given when purchasing oil for such equipment is to refer to the manual for using your tool.

If you are the owner of a Shtil brand chainsaw or just want to buy one of the presented models, we offer a review of the Shtil MS 180 branded chainsaw.

A good choice would be synthetic oil for two-stroke air-cooled engines of the API-TB and API-TC classes. When you come to the store, ask the seller about the availability of such brands as Stihl, Husqvarna, HAHOTEK, Champion, ALCO, etc. In no case should you be greedy on ingredients; it is better to spend money on a quality product rather than then spend a lot of money on repairs.

Choosing gasoline for a Stihl chainsaw

When choosing gasoline for your chainsaw, you should pay attention, of course, to the quality of the gasoline itself and its octane number. It is best to take gasoline with an octane number of AI92. You can try AI95, but there are too many questions about its quality. If you doubt the quality of AI95, then AI92 will be the best choice for you.

We do not advise you to use gasoline that has been sitting in any container for a long time, be it a canister, a tank, or anything else. For the fuel mixture, you need to use only fresh gasoline, otherwise it may lose all its useful qualities: octane number, etc. If you still use not fresh gasoline, then your chainsaw will operate at incomplete power. If your chainsaw breaks down due to the use of such fuel, you will have to spend a lot of money on repairing it, since such a case is not covered under warranty, and you would be better off purchasing a new tool.

Production of a fuel mixture of gasoline and oil

Before you start creating a fuel mixture for a chainsaw from the manufacturer Shtil, pay attention to the manual from the manufacturer. Why do you need to do this? The thing is that if the oil content in gasoline is insufficient, the cylinder and piston will become very hot, which will cause scuffing, which will lead to breakdown of the CPG, and as a result, to expensive repairs.

In order to prepare a high-quality fuel mixture, you need to mix oil and gasoline in a precisely adjusted proportion. If there is more oil than needed, this can lead to carbon deposits on the pistons and spark plugs. If you overdo it a little with gasoline, expect the imminent demise of your engine. For example, on average, one liter of gasoline should be mixed with 20-50 ml. oils For calm conditions, it is recommended to fill 4 liters. gasoline – 100 ml. oils In this ratio, a mixture is prepared for chainsaws up to 1.5 kW. If the power is more than 1.5 kW, 100 ml should be poured. 5 liters of oil gasoline. But these are all approximate calculations; always use the proportions indicated in the manual for your saw if you yourself do not understand how much and what is needed. But don't put too much faith in the numbers on the oil label.

Chainsaw Stihl MS 180 - features of operation and maintenance

Shtil chainsaws are quite small in size. They have a high level of cutting ability and are more powerful. These advantages attract buyers to the models of this company.

The chain lubrication system of the Stihl saw consists of the following components:

  • Guide bar.
  • Saw chain.
  • Oil pump.

The oil supply through the pump has a special adjustment. An important fact is that the chain is lubricated during the entire operation of the saw, so the oil product must flow continuously onto its surface.

During operation of the tool, lubricant comes out of the bar groove and is immediately absorbed by sawdust, so the chain is automatically lubricated. There are models that have a dosage of material that is supplied to the chain. Low price models are equipped only with a hand pump. It works due to the action of the drive on the handle.

How much gasoline does a chainsaw consume?

The fuel tanks of most gasoline saws have a volume of 0.3 to 1.0 liters. How often you need to pour the fuel mixture into the chainsaw depends on the chosen brand, engine power and intensity of work. In logging and wood construction, professional chainsaws are used, characterized by high power and a long period of continuous operation. For housekeeping in a village house, in a country house, or for the occasional production of wood products, less productive, but lightweight and convenient household models are used. For a professional tool with a power of 5-6 kW, fuel consumption when sawing logs can reach 3.0 l/hour. For less powerful models with a 1.5-2.0 kW engine, it fluctuates at 0.6-0.8 l/hour.

Lubricant selection criteria

After purchasing the device, the question may arise about choosing oil to fill the Stihl chainsaw. After all, proper care of equipment increases its performance and saves you from all kinds of breakdowns. The performance of the saw directly depends on the use of good fuel and lubricant.

Stihl chainsaws have a carburetor two-stroke engine and 2 tanks (gasoline and oil). To choose the right oil for a Stihl saw, you need to know its criteria:

  1. It is necessary to determine the manufacturer , because in domestic models they use simple oils (for motorcycles) in a ratio of 1 to 25, and foreign ones use branded lubricant products in a ratio of 1 to 40 (proportions of oil to gasoline). In fact, the owners themselves determine which one to use. You should be prepared that improper use will result in a decrease in power and productivity. Most people use motor oil; if not, then transmission oil. Experts advise using the latter for this manufacturer.
  2. You need to know the color. For chainsaws with a two-stroke engine, red, green, and blue colors are suitable.
  3. Compound.

Requirements for the fuel used

The main fuel component of a carburetor engine is unleaded gasoline. You should not experiment with the question of what kind of gasoline to pour into a chainsaw. Its brand must meet the requirements set out in the instrument’s passport and instructions for its use. Violation of this rule may result in:

  • to a sharp decrease in saw power and uneven operation when using gasoline with a lower octane number;
  • to overheating of engine elements when the recommended octane number exceeds the nominal value.

It is strictly prohibited to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw with questionable mixtures, so you should use the services of the nearest gas station. We must remember that in addition to the octane number, automobile fuel has many other indicators that change depending on the season.

Do not store a large stock for a long time. In winter conditions, the engine may not start on gasoline purchased in the summer.

List of oils by price/quality ratio

  • Four-stroke Viking HD 10 W - 30 - used for small-sized 4-stroke engines, can be used regardless of the season, but the air temperature must not be lower than minus 15 degrees. It is sold in bottles (volume 0.6 liters), costs about 360 rubles.

Lubricant for 2-stroke engines:

  • Volume 100 ml - you can buy it for 90 rubles, you need to add 1 to 50 to gasoline (20 grams of oil per liter of gasoline). This type is designed specifically for Stihl chainsaws. The main component is minerals. Can also be used for other models from different manufacturers.
  • Stihl (volume 1l), intended for saws manufactured by Stihl. Diluted 1 to 50. The lubricant is based on minerals. The price varies within 500 rubles.
  • Stihl with dispenser (volume 1l). Diluted in a ratio of 1 to 50. Price about 600 rubles.
  • Stihl HP Ultra (volume 100 ml), ratio 1 to 50. Also made for Stihl chainsaws. This is synthetic oil. It has a high degree of lubricating benefits. Can also be used for other models of chainsaws with 2-stroke engines. The cost of this lubricant varies between 120 rubles.
  • Stihl (volume 5 l), the ratio of lubricant product to gasoline is 1 to 50. Component - mineral additives. Designed directly for Stihl chainsaws with 2-stroke engines. Used for others too. The price is 1500 rub.
  • Stihl HP Ultra with dispenser (volume 1 l), diluted in a ratio of 1 to 50, made for chainsaws from the manufacturer Shtil. Can also be used for other brands. Cost 1100 rub.

Fuels and lubricants

Petrol

Engine manufacturers recommend using high-octane gasoline AI-92, 95. The use of fuel with various additives to increase the octane number is not allowed. During this time, the process of resin formation and polymerization may occur in it, which negatively affects the operation of the engine.

We do not recommend consuming gasoline that has been stored for more than 60 days.

Most chainsaw engines use leaded gasoline. If you purchased a tool with a catalyst (the tank cap will be green), we recommend unleaded gasoline.

Important: you should not save money and use gasoline with an octane number below 90. It is also not recommended to use gasoline with an octane number higher than 95. This leads to premature wear of the engine piston group.

Oil

The design of two-stroke air-cooled engines does not provide a separate lubrication system. Moving parts are lubricated by the oil present in the fuel mixture. Therefore, it is so necessary to use only high-quality oils from trusted manufacturers.

Recommended oils for refueling chainsaws:

  • STIHL HP – developed specifically for chainsaw engines. It has proven itself in all weather conditions and ensures ideal engine operation.
  • Husqvarna HP is an oil from a well-known manufacturer of garden equipment. Special additives reduce carbon formation on the engine crankcase, which can occur due to the use of low-quality fuel.
  • Oleo-Mac Prosint 2T is a multifunctional oil with synthetic esters. Protects engine parts from corrosion, reduces wear of mechanisms and parts.
  • CHAMPION JASO FD is a high-quality oil from a well-known company. Provides good protection for all moving engine parts;
  • Vitals Semisynthetic is an all-season oil for budget chainsaw models, intended for use at temperatures from -20 to +40C 0 .

Important: the use of mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic motor oils is prohibited. They are intended for engines of a different type and do not have the necessary properties.

What gasoline is suitable for the tool?

There are different opinions among sawyers regarding the use of appropriate gasoline. Some recommend using AI-92 fuel, others argue that you should use fuel with an octane rating of AI-95.

Now it's time to dot the i's. All chainsaws operate on gasoline with an octane rating of 90 to 95. However, it is recommended to give preference to AI-92 fuel. The exception is when the manufacturer makes a recommendation about which gasoline is best to use.

The most important requirement when using fuel is that it must be clean and free of contaminants.

Fuel mixture: proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw

The flammable mixture for a power tool such as a chainsaw is prepared from two components : oil and gasoline. Chainsaws today are only equipped with 2-stroke engines; this design forces us to mix the two liquid components directly by hand. We suggest you figure out how to do it correctly and why you need to do it!

  • Why do you need to mix oil and gasoline?
  • Ratio in proportions
  • How and for how long to store the fuel mixture
  • After work service

Why do you need to mix oil and gasoline?

Of course, in order to save lovers of power tools from this routine work, there were attempts to create 4-stroke models of chainsaws , for example, the companies Stihl and Shindaiwa persistently pursued this. But alas, their creations did not gain much popularity due to their bulkiness and problems with the oil distributor during maneuvers and working at an angle.

Therefore, it is very important to adhere to the correct proportions of gasoline and oil so that the only 2-stroke chainsaw engine can last as long as possible. Also, under no circumstances should you allow working on pure gasoline, otherwise you will “kill” your power tool!

When the time comes to buy oil, you need to clearly understand its purpose. Among folk methods to save money there is a legend that oils from boat motorcycles and scooters are an excellent replacement for the original ones. Alas, this is not so. The oil purchased must be intended only for two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry equipment. This is also important because during warranty repairs associated with engine failure, the used oil plays a significant role. Due to non-original use, the chainsaw may lose its warranty due to failure to comply with proper operation measures.

If we talk about gasoline itself, then the best choice would be to use fuel with an octane rating of at least A-95. Don’t skimp on the quality of fuel for your chainsaw, because you don’t need much of it to operate. Even though foreign manufacturers allow the use of A-92 or A-90, alas, in our country they are much inferior to their European counterparts. Using gasoline with a lower octane number, you risk clogging the engine with all kinds of small debris present in the fuel. Subsequently, the engine cannot be repaired.

Ratio in proportions

As for the ratio of the fuel and lubricant mixture, everything is easy here: you need to follow the instructions included with the power tool. We will write everything down in a more accessible form.

Often, the most well-known manufacturers (Stihl, Husquarna, etc.) indicate the required number of components in the user manual or in the chainsaw passport. The most popular proportion is 1:40 or 1:50, which means for 1 part oil you need 40 (50) parts gasoline. If in liters, then this works out: per unit we take 1 liter (1000 ml) of gasoline, divide by 40 (50) and get = 25 (20) ml of oil. It turns out that for 1 liter of fuel only 25 (20) milliliters of oil is required, or, in short, 1:40 (50).

If we talk about chainsaws from the budget line of any Chinese manufacturer, then the situation is different. In models called “Made in China” it is required to use a proportion of 1:25, i.e. For 1 liter of gasoline, 40 milliliters of oil . Such a large use of oil in comparison with original saws is that branded chain saws always have high-quality assembly; naturally, the distance between the piston/cylinder is an order of magnitude smaller than in Chinese models. Therefore, “Heavenly” chainsaws require more oil to compensate for the low quality of the main elements of the model.

Risks of using fuel and oil substitutes

The design features of internal combustion engines of domestic and imported chainsaws exclude the use of more affordable biofuel and gas-condensate gasoline substitutes. The performance characteristics of such fuel are currently far from perfect. In the total sales of motor oils, counterfeit lubricants, according to various sources, range from 8 to 15%. Only an experienced specialist can distinguish original products from counterfeits. To eliminate possible risks of premature failure of the saw, it is recommended to purchase consumables at branded retail outlets and representative offices of dealer companies. Despite all the external similarities, it is prohibited to use oils for two-stroke internal combustion engines of mopeds and light motorcycles to prepare the working fuel mixture. The use of non-recommended lubricants may result in service providers refusing to provide warranty coverage.

How to breed

Stihl saw fuel blend is prepared by mixing high-octane gasoline and two-stroke engine oil. The proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw is as follows: if the power of the unit does not exceed 1.5 kW, then the ratio will be 1:40 (i.e. 25 ml of oil per liter of gasoline), and with a power above this value - 1:50 (20 ml per 1 l).

Looking at the table of proportions, let’s look at the example of two saws of different power on how to mix oil and gasoline.

  1. For a low-power STIHL MS 180 with a 2-stroke engine, the dilution will be in the proportion of 1:40. Its fuel tank capacity is only 0.25 liters. In order to mix fuel with oil for one refueling, we need 6.25 ml of oil for 0.25 liters of gasoline.
  2. For the heavy-duty professional chainsaw STIHL MS 660, dilution of oil and gasoline must be carried out in a ratio of 1:50. This model has a fuel tank volume of 0.825 liters. In order to understand how much oil to pour for such a volume of gasoline, multiply 0.825 by 20. It turns out that you will need 16.5 ml of motor oil.

In practice, of course, there is no need to calculate what proportion of the lubricating fluid will be diluted in the volume of gasoline per fill-up. Typically, the fuel mixture is diluted in a volume of 1-2 liters, which is enough for several refills of the chainsaw.

You need to dilute gasoline for the Shtil chainsaw in a separate canister, under no circumstances pouring components into the saw’s gas tank separately. These engines do not have an oil pump or the possibility of installing one, so only ready-made fuel is poured into the tank. There are even special canisters with two necks on sale to make it more convenient to dilute the mixture, but you can add oil to gasoline for a chainsaw in an ordinary canister.

It is better to observe the proportions for refueling a chainsaw as precisely as possible: excess oil will create carbon deposits on the spark plugs and pistons and provoke detonation during fuel combustion. This may shorten engine life. In addition, the saw user in this case is forced to inhale exhaust gases with unburned fractions. At the same time, excess gasoline can damage the pistons due to insufficient lubrication.

To dilute gasoline, it is recommended to use special tools - a measuring container for gasoline, a lubricant dispenser, a syringe, a canister for preparing the mixture, and a watering can for filling the saw tank. All these auxiliary accessories are sold in official Stihl stores and dealers.

Some folk craftsmen, in case of lack of special measuring accessories, advise using a plastic bottle: a full cap (from the same bottle) of oil is poured into a half-liter container filled with gasoline. The output is approximately 1:50.

It is better to calculate the amount of mixture for refueling in advance based on the expected amount of work and the declared consumption of a given engine. The tank volume in most chainsaws is about 0.5 liters; a 2 kW engine will consume approximately 1.2 liters per hour of operation (more precise characteristics of the saw can be seen in the instructions). Thus, there is no point in preparing the mixture in volumes exceeding 3 dressings in a row.

Before starting to prepare the mixture, it is recommended to thoroughly clean and dry the neck of the canister and the area around it to avoid the ingress of foreign impurities: dust, water, etc. The same is done with the tank before filling with fuel: the lid and neck are cleaned of dust and adhering dirt, so that it does not get into the gas tank, and then into the engine.

Step-by-step instructions for refueling

If you want to refuel your chainsaw, you need to follow a simple algorithm:

  1. Prepare fuel in the recommended proportion of gasoline and oil for two-stroke chainsaws.
  2. Prepare the saw for refueling by clearing its surface of sawdust and shavings.
  3. Place the saw on a flat, stable stand with the reservoir neck facing up.
  4. Carefully place a small funnel (plastic or metal, resistant to fuels and lubricants, easily purchased at an auto supply store) into the open neck of the tank.
  5. Carefully pour fuel into the tank, avoiding overflow. It is unacceptable to pour under the lid - this will lead to splashing out while screwing the lid!
  6. Close the lid of the fuel tank
  7. Replace chain lube (required!)
  8. Test run the engine at idle speed.

Preparing the fuel mixture for a chainsaw

Let's look at everything in order:

Petrol

Gasoline must have an octane number of at least AI92. You can also fill in AI95, but its quality at our gas stations leaves much to be desired, so if you are not sure of the quality of 95, then it is still better to take AI92 gasoline for diluting gasoline in a chainsaw. You should also not take gasoline that has been sitting for a long time in a canister, tank or any other container. Gasoline for preparing the fuel mixture for a chainsaw must be fresh, otherwise it loses its properties, in particular its octane number, and even if you run the chainsaw on such fuel, it will not produce full power. And the saddest thing in this case is that the failure of a chainsaw due to low-quality fuel is considered a non-warranty case and leads to expensive repairs. Sometimes it’s easier to buy a new chainsaw than to repair it after such a breakdown!

Read more about gasoline for chainsaws here:

Oil

Oil for 2-stroke engines according to the classification of the American Petroleum Institute (API), the American Petroleum Institute has the API-TB class, there are also API-TC class oils, but they are designed to work with lower loads than most common chainsaws. If you take the power class according to the Japan Automobile Standards Organization (JASO) classification, then focus on the JASO-FB and JASO FD classes (see Table 1 below.). Do not under any circumstances use oils for four-stroke engines! Remember that in a two-stroke engine the oil must burn completely, which means it is better to take synthetic oil, since it produces less smoke and combustion residues. And if you fill your chainsaw with oil for four-stroke engines, which will not burn completely and as a result carbon deposits will form, then your CPG will fail. The best thing to guide you when choosing oil for a chainsaw is the instructions for it.

Proportions

When preparing a fuel mixture of gasoline and chainsaw oil, be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendations. Why is it so important to follow these recommended proportions? If the amount of oil in gasoline is small, the cylinder and piston will heat up and, accordingly, scuffing will occur, which means failure of the CPG and repair. If there is a lot of oil in gasoline, then this is carbon deposits and again failure. Each manufacturer has its own recommendations on proportions (see Table 2 below). Try not to store the finished mixture for more than a month. Do not store it in direct sunlight or open. Avoid ingress of water and dust - this will lead to carburetor failure, since the fuel filter is often not able to completely clean the fuel.

Since they often come from search engines with queries like “how much oil to pour into 1,2,5 liters of gasoline,” I’m adding another table under No. 3 in which you can find out how much oil to add to gasoline according to the accepted proportions. The proportions can be found in Table 2 or, more precisely, in the instructions for your chainsaw.

Devices for diluting the fuel mixture

Of course, you can use a canister, syringe or measuring bottle, but there are more convenient options. It is worth noting here that, for example, Stihl oils are available in 2 types of packaging - with and without a dispenser. With a small difference in price, a bottle with a dispenser greatly simplifies the process of preparing the mixture. There are also many different canisters with a dispenser, with separate compartments for oil and gasoline. All these devices reduce the preparation time for starting and operating the chainsaw.

Stihl canister with compartments for oil and gasoline

This canister has two compartments for storing oil and gasoline separately. The gasoline container has a volume of 5 liters, and the oil container has a volume of 3 liters. Often, many owners of gas-powered tools with two-stroke engines carry oil in this canister in one compartment and a ready-made fuel mixture in the other.

Husqvarna canister with compartments for oil and fuel mixture.

Husqvarn canisters have a special feature: the oil container can be detached from the main one and used separately.

Stihl lubricant for two-stroke engines

Stihl engineers develop oils that are optimally suited for all two-stroke engines installed on Stihl chainsaws and trimmers and more. The Stihl line of lubricants for two-stroke engines includes several product options:

  • Stihl HP;
  • Stihl HP Ultra;
  • Stihl HP S

Stihl HP review

Shtil HP is a chainsaw lubricant designed to meet high quality requirements and is intended to lubricate the internal parts of the engine during operation. It is made on a mineral basis and has good combustion performance (has a low level of emissions of harmful substances during combustion).

The original Stihl HP is red and comes in original Stihl packaging.

It comes in several packaging options, the most popular of which is a one-liter bottle with a built-in dispenser. You can also find Stihl HP in canisters of five, ten and fifty-five liters.

The smallest packaging of Stihl HP, which is convenient to use in cases where you need to prepare only one liter of fuel mixture, is a twenty-gram plastic bottle.

The company also produces one hundred gram Stihl HP bottles, which can be used to prepare five liters of fuel mixture.

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, Stihl HP can be used to prepare a mixture for any two-stroke engines.

The shelf life, if stored in a closed container, is 4 years.

Stihl HP Ultra review

Unlike regular Shtil HP oil, HP Ultra is designed for high engine loads during operation and is recommended for use on professional chainsaws. This oil is synthetic. To ensure that consumers do not confuse diluted fuel, it has a green color; accordingly, a ready-made mixture of gasoline with Stihl HP Ultra also has a greenish tint.

There are only two packages of this oil. This is Stihl HP Ultra 100 ml and 1 liter with dispenser.

The cost of Stihl HP Ultra is almost twice the price of Stihl HP and for this reason it is less popular in our country.

The Stihl HP Ultra has a shelf life of four years.

HP Super

Designed for high-performance and four-stroke engines made using 2-MIX technology. The characteristics are slightly worse than those of the HP Ultra, so at the moment the HP Super is not available on the shelves of official Shtil dealers.

Recommended brands of fuels and lubricants for powering chainsaws

The specific brand of gasoline for the saw is always given in the manufacturer's instructions. It is recommended to strictly follow it.

There are 2 types of oil:

  • for the engine,
  • for lubricating the chain and bar.

Do not confuse or misuse them. This is guaranteed to lead to tool failure. Repairing it can cost almost the same as a new saw.

The most popular lubricating oils for chainsaws are the following brands:

Each container with branded oil always indicates the proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw (Stil, Husqvarna, Partner, Ural), which must be adhered to when composing the mixture.

How to increase the service life of a chainsaw?

The chainsaw will be technically serviceable under one condition:

When purchasing a tool, read the manufacturer’s instructions and operating recommendations in detail.

Strictly adhere to and comply with the requirements for the selection of components for the formation of a combustible mixture consisting of gasoline and the recommended oil.

Oils intended for motor vehicles cannot be used to form the working product. This is strictly prohibited.

What happens if you pour waste into a chainsaw?

Once a chainsaw owner has been using it for a while, he may want to make some modifications to the tool. And it’s good if his desires are limited to purchasing various attachments that expand the functionality of the chainsaw. But some go further - they begin to experiment with the gasoline and oil that their saw runs on.

If we already talked about gasoline earlier (most modern saws require it with a high octane number - no lower than 92-95), then it’s worth special mention about oil. Many car enthusiasts accumulate a significant amount of used engine oil during the operation of their car. And that’s why some people want to use this material to refuel a chainsaw.

If you do this, then engine failure is guaranteed. The reason for this will primarily be the low lubricity of the reused oil. It will burn with a lot of black soot. The metal particles contained in the oil will first clog the fuel filter (these are the larger particles), and then the cylinder sealing rings will fail. Metal suspension in oil will damage both the surface of the cylinders themselves and the bearings.

Some “innovators” are trying to use oil to lubricate the chain itself and the block on which it is located. This will also not lead to anything good. What exactly will happen can be seen in the attached video.

The durability and reliability of a chainsaw is determined not only by its operating conditions, but also by the quality of the fuel used for refueling. In addition to the special conditions of use when grinding in parts during the first few refuelings, the quality of the fuel mixture also needs to be paid attention to.

Professional Stihl chainsaws are equipped with two-stroke engines that require high-quality fuel - a dosed mixture of high-octane gasoline and oil, designed to operate the engine at high speeds. The correct choice of gasoline and oil for the Shtil chainsaw is the key to long and successful operation of this unit.

What happens if you pour waste into a chainsaw?

If you don’t want your chainsaw to fail at the wrong moment, use only high-quality fuels and lubricants. Mixing waste with gasoline is prohibited. The reasons for this are the following factors:

  • The viscosity of the material is different, so the grinding is not capable of providing effective lubrication of rubbing parts and mechanisms
  • The waste contains small particles of metal and shavings, which, if they enter the tank, will cause clogging of the fuel filter and channel. If the lubricant gets into the cylinder along with small particles, they will leave their mark in the form of accelerated wear of the piston rings
  • Emission of large amounts of black smoke, indicating oil burning

You cannot pour surrogate materials not only into the gasoline tank, but also into the chain lubrication tank. What happens if you use waste in the tank to lubricate the chain can be seen in the video.

Using the instructions, you can independently prepare the correct fuel mixture for the chainsaw to operate on. If the fuel mixture is diluted incorrectly, not only does the service life of the tool decrease, but its performance also decreases.

All modern chainsaws are equipped with a two-stroke engine. Its long and uninterrupted operation directly depends on whether the proportion of oil and gasoline for the chainsaw is correct. The variety of brands of tools and the features of each of them are the reason that this procedure is not easy for most novice chainsaw users.
