A renovator is a multifunctional construction tool that will help you perform a number of operations. Its uniqueness is explained by its special operating principle. The working part (platform) moves from side to side with high frequency and small amplitude. By installing various equipment, you can perform operations such as cutting, milling, sanding, removing old paint, glue or rust. At the same time, it is possible to process a wide range of building materials in hard-to-reach places. A variety of renovators are presented in the country's stores; models differ in cost, power, and equipment. When choosing a tool, experts recommend paying attention to the following points.
How to choose a renovator
Specifications.
When choosing a renovator, you should take into account two important technical parameters.
- The maximum vibration frequency of the platform in renovators varies from 10 to 25 thousand per minute. Since the tool has to perform different operations, the device must have frequency adjustment.
- The performance of network renovators depends on the power of the installed electric motor. Most often, the tool is equipped with 200-600 W motors. This is enough to complete the assigned tasks.
Nutrition.
Renovators are electrical appliances that require current to operate.
- Network models are connected to a household power supply with an alternating voltage of 220 V. The disadvantage of this type of tool is that it is tied to an outlet. But at the same time, networked renovators are distinguished by their long service life, productivity, lightness and affordable price.
- The main advantage of battery models will be independence from the main current. The tool can be used far from civilization. But it should be borne in mind that the continuous operation time from a fully charged battery rarely exceeds 30 minutes. Many manufacturers standardize batteries, so the same battery can be installed on different power tools.
Additional functions
. Modern renovators are equipped with a number of additional options that make work comfortable.
- The stabilization system allows you to maintain a given oscillation frequency at different load levels. This feature will help ensure high quality processing.
- The built-in backlight will help you perform work in conditions with limited visibility.
- Locking the power button frees the operator's finger, allowing the platform to oscillate at maximum speed.
- Quick-release fastening (Velcro) speeds up the transition from one operation to another, simplifying the replacement of equipment.
We selected 17 of the best renovators for review. All these models can be purchased in the Russian retail chain. When allocating places, the editors of the simplerule magazine relied on the opinion of the expert community, taking into account feedback from domestic users.
Domestic or foreign
Often, when choosing a tool, we ask ourselves the question: “Which manufacturer should we give preference to, and whose products should we not consider at all?” There are many opinions on this issue, most of which are based on purely personal observation. One person may praise the renovator from China for its long service life, while another will denigrate the original Bosh for its sudden breakdown. Moreover, both of these people can operate the tool in different conditions and under different loads.
Regardless of the manufacturer, a multitool can serve for many years if you treat it with care, according to the instruction manual. Of course, Chinese underground models usually do not shine with quality, lag behind the declared characteristics and can break in the first stages of work. We will not focus on failed models, but will tell you about proven brands.
To purchase a tool with a guarantee that will have all the declared characteristics, it is best to contact an authorized dealer. When buying a renovator secondhand, on the market or in unknown online stores, there is a huge chance of running into a fake. When choosing a multitool from foreign brands, we recommend paying attention to the following companies: Makita, Bosh, Hammer, AEG and Fein. Domestic renovators of decent quality are produced by Enkor and SPEC companies. In the rating below, we present the most optimal models of multifunctional tools for household use.

Which multi-tool is better?
Some of the most common are BOSCH and MAKITA models. These manufacturers have long established themselves in the tool market and offer a wide range of renovators.
For example, the MAKITA DTM50RFE(X1) model is perfect for finishing work. A large selection of attachments and built-in lighting ensure high efficiency and speed of operations. The tool is protected from overloads and allows you to smoothly adjust the speed, which reaches up to 20,000 per minute.
The BOSCH company does not lag behind its competitors and produces no less functional tools. Thus, the BOSCH GOP 10.8 V-LI 1.5 Ah model is equipped with 36 nozzles. For example, one of them can easily remove tile adhesive. The attachments can be adjusted in 30° increments. A modern Li-Ion battery and fast charger ensure comfortable and fast operation of the tool. Oscillation frequency - 5000-20000 rpm.
When choosing a multifunctional tool, focus primarily on your tasks. For use once every one or two months, feel free to take a simple household model - all the necessary functions are there, there is no overpayment. If you plan to do more frequent and complex work, take a more impressive model - with an expanded set of equipment, a flexible shaft for precise work and additional features (keyless change of attachments, backlight).
This tool can saw, cut, grind, polish, clean, sharpen and perform many other operations with wood, plastic, metal, concrete, brick, fiberglass, laminate, tile, rubber, etc., and with a fairly high quality of processing.
Thanks to its small size, convenience and versatility, it can replace some common tools, such as: a hacksaw, a jigsaw, a chisel, an angle grinder, scissors, a sander, a sharpener, etc. It is convenient to use, since cuts are made by submersion anywhere, which allows make neat corners, curved lines, openings and work flush, close to the obstacle, in corners and niches.
The device is highly safe because there is no centrifugal ejection of material, kickback, kickback or rupture of equipment, and accidental and unintentional contact with a working tool does not lead to injury or tragedy. It is also so easy to use that you can work with it right away, gaining skill as you gain experience.
I think that everyone has already guessed that we are talking about a renovator or a vibration universal machine (aka an oscillator, a universal cutter, a multifunctional tool, an electric chisel, a multitool). As soon as he is not yet called, all the names except the first require some further explanation, and only the first is immediately clear, so in the people's memory he will still remain a renovator (however, the same thing happened with the copier and diaper). Moreover, this is not a hybrid of several familiar tools, it is a separate type, the operating principle of which is based on very fast oscillations (vibrations) of the drive, but with a very small scope. Thus, renovators can become the best assistants both in the home workshop and on the construction site, especially in those moments when accuracy, jewelry precision, or work in a very cramped and inaccessible place are required.
So, let's try to understand the many existing models of renovators and consider their differences from each other.
Characteristics
The greater the power of the renovator, the greater its instantaneous torque and, as a result, the productivity and time of continuous operation without overheating with materials that are difficult to process. For soft materials (plasterboard, plastic, linoleum, etc.) or short-term work, a power of 100-200 W is sufficient. For professional applications, power values above 200 W are required (when working with tiles, stone and concrete 300-350 W).
It is worth noting that vibrating tools are always inferior in performance to rotary and reciprocating models, so they are usually used as an addition to other specialized equipment.
The angle of oscillation or tilt to the right and left differs slightly between different models and is about one and a half degrees in each direction. This is primarily due to the safety of the tool, since at such low values, unintentional contact with the working edge is safe for humans.
The oscillation frequency is almost always adjustable and, depending on the type of surface being treated, can reach 35,000 movements per minute. Thus, cutting and sawing hard materials, such as concrete and metal, is performed at high speed, scraping at medium speed, and processing plastic, soft wood, foam plastic, etc. at low speed (to avoid scorching and melting of workpieces). The frequency setting can be placed either in a separate regulator or combined with the trigger - the choice of option is often a matter of taste and skill.
Nutrition
Renovators produce both mains-powered and battery-powered ones. The former are usually more powerful, more efficient, more reliable and more suitable for long-term operation, while the latter are indispensable in places with unstable or no power supply.
Currently, the vast majority of autonomous renovators are produced with Li-Ion batteries. This is due to the fact that, compared to models made using other technologies, they store several times more energy with the same volume of the battery itself (higher energy density), charging is possible at any time, since they do not need to be completely discharged (there is no memory effect ) and they have low self-discharge, but there are also disadvantages: they are afraid of violations of operating conditions (deep discharge and overcharging), they need complex protective electronics, they do not hold high currents well, they do not work in the cold, they are charged only from their own chargers, they have very the effect of aging (degradation) is strongly pronounced and the full charge rate is not very high.
The battery capacity determines how long the tool can work autonomously. It is measured in ampere hours or watt hours. The cheaper the tool, the less the capacity of the batteries installed in it and, accordingly, the operating time, and vice versa.
The voltage of a complete battery depends on the number of standard cells included in its composition and, accordingly, has a step that is a multiple of their number. The more of them and the higher the voltage, the longer the tool will work with the same battery capacity, since the stored energy is greater.
As for the dependence of power on battery voltage, in this case it is only indirect. This is explained by the fact that it is easier and cheaper for the manufacturer to produce a powerful tool with a high battery voltage, since otherwise it would be necessary to use more expensive motors, high-current batteries, and larger diameter conductors. The only disadvantage of batteries of higher voltage will be larger dimensions and heavier weight.
Nozzles
The multifunctionality of renovators is based on a wide variety of replaceable attachments, with the help of which the number of available operations is expanded. Their shape is chosen to suit the tasks assigned to the user, and the material from which they are made is optimized for a specific surface. Most attachments can be installed at different angles. To make the choice easier, manufacturers most often indicate the purpose of each attachment and recommended rules for working with them. Their assortment is huge: spatulas, blades, saws, knives, abrasives, and the number of new ones is only multiplying. The wear resistance of attachments, as a rule, correlates with their cost (sometimes exceeding the price of the tool itself), but correct and appropriate use is the best way to increase the duration of use (for example, a corundum chisel for jointing can go several hundred meters before it is completely thinned, and a metal file will be erased in concrete after a couple of meters).
Often, attachments are grouped into special sets for a specific application (plumbing, decoration, windows, auto repair shop, garden, etc.)
Replacement of equipment can be done using a key or quick-clamping method. The first is cheaper and simpler, while the dimensions of the unit itself are minimal (very important when working in narrow and hard-to-reach places), but it takes longer, since a worn or non-profile nozzle can only be replaced by unscrewing the fasteners. With another method, you just need to install and fix the nozzle by turning the lever, but, as a rule, the lever increases the weight and size of the tool itself. The safety of both fastening methods is satisfactory.
In most cases, equipment from different manufacturers is interchangeable directly or through an adapter (only in models with a quick-release fastening mechanism may incompatibility occur).
The best battery renovators
The most mobile renovators are battery-powered models. With their help you can cut, grind or mill away from the mains. It’s a pity that the continuous operation time on a single charge is limited to 15-30 minutes. The following models have proven themselves well in Russia.

Criterias of choice
To choose a suitable renovator model, you need to consider the following points:
Criterion | Description |
Power | The primary criterion when choosing a potential renovator is its power. The more powerful the device, the longer it will work and the faster the functions will be performed. Each type has its own power indicators. For network models, for example, they are in the range of 200-550 W. For battery models, the reference point is the voltage from the battery, and it can be 10-18 V. |
Oscillation frequency | By this parameter you can understand what material the tool can process. Low-frequency vibrations will cut through metal, as well as ash and oak, but high frequencies will allow you to process plywood, pine and even plastic. |
Additional functions | Minor options expand the functionality of the device. For example, the presence of a soft start will eliminate the tool jerk at start-up, thereby initially increasing the accuracy of the work. The ability to connect a vacuum cleaner will greatly facilitate cleaning after work. Maintaining constant speed will make the cut cleaner, even when pressed with force. |
Ergonomics | This parameter is responsible for the ease of working with the tool. It is especially important when working for a long time (at least several hours). The best option today is rubber inserts and a non-standard handle shape. They will help you hold the device in your hands for a couple of hours at a time. |
Weight | This parameter is responsible for the comfort of the grip when working with the tool for a long time. The heavier the device, the less it will be possible to hold it in your hands while working. Therefore, options from one to four kilograms are being considered. |
Equipment | The kit includes nozzles for MFIs - from 3 to 35 pieces. Each of them is responsible for its own function - for cutting wood, metal, plastic and other metals. The presence of a case will greatly facilitate storage and transportation. |
Each criterion must be taken into account when choosing a future renovator
