A gas wrench, also known as a pipe wrench, is known for its widespread use among plumbers. The difference from all other wrenches is that to start working, you need to bring the liner to the desired size, and only then fix it on the pipe. This way you can hold round objects.
In the store you can find several models of gas wrenches, which differ in size, jaw angle and grip method.
There are 5 key numbers. The larger the number, the larger the diameter of the pipe that it can grip. The angle of the jaws is selected according to the work being performed and the ease of its use during repairs. Consider the main types of gas keys.
Advantages and disadvantages of pipe wrenches
Advantages:
- Depends on jaw size
- Teeth grip slippery material
- Some models can be adjusted with the touch of a button.
- Sometimes with a self-clamping device
Can also be used for non-existent wrenches can be turned in both directions
Flaws:
- The gripping surface may be scratched
- The classic pipe wrench rotates in one direction only

What does a pipe wrench look like?
The pipe wrench is universal. It's no surprise that it can be found in almost every tool bag. The pipe wrench got the name "water pump wrench" because it was originally intended for repairing vehicle water pumps.
Thanks to its versatility, it quickly established itself in other areas. There are various designs.
Types of gas keys
If we consider all variants of devices intended for working with pipes, couplings, bends and other parts without special edges to be pipe, then the following types can be distinguished:
- pipe with self-gripping;
- chain pipe;
- drill key for core pipes;
- lever gas (Swedish);
- adjustable pipe (American);
- sheet piling and pipe pliers.
The most common are the lever gas wrench and the adjustable pipe wrench . Lever - these are two levers connected by a hinge, one of which is stationary, the second moves to adjust the diameter of the grip. In this case, both levers are a handle on one side, and jaws on the other side. The adjustable one consists of two elements, one of them is a handle, the second part is attached to it using a thread, which moves along the handle.
In addition, these tools differ in the shape and location of the gripping jaws. Straight jaws can be positioned at 45° or 90° relative to the axis of the handle. Also, the working surfaces are made S-shaped, they are located at 45°. A wrench with an S-shaped jaw holds the pipe much more reliably, since contact occurs at three points on the circle, and not at two, as with flat “jaws.” The jaws of pipe wrenches are also removable, which allows you to extend the service life of the tool by replacing worn out working surfaces.
Pipe type connectors
Applicable connection: The two sides of the pliers lie on top of each other without any parts. Inlaid Joint: Half of the legs of each matching plier are embedded.
Both legs can be placed on top of each other. Extended Knuckle: The arm of the pliers is cut off. The other leg is pushed through this hole. The hinge pin is supported on both sides.
The consequence of this is that these connections can withstand very high loads. Push-in fittings have proliferated and are now standard equipment on the best pipe wrenches. Sliding connectors with push-button adjustment are now often offered.
How to choose?
Do you need a quality wrench to work with pipes or other products?
When choosing it, you should pay attention to such important parameters as: 1. Size. 2. Features of sponges and their location. 3. Type of handle placement. 4. Material of manufacture. 5. Features of handles.
Consider what products you will be working with. Make sure that the tool is durable, reliable and comfortable, resistant to temperature changes and other aggressive influences. An important factor in choosing a pipe wrench is its cost. It is determined by the manufacturer’s brand, design features and configuration. We do not recommend saving! Give preference to already proven products from well-known brands. It is guaranteed to last a long time, will not damage the products that you will grab, and will retain all its properties.
Instructions for choosing a pipe wrench
Before you buy a pipe wrench, we would like to explain in more detail these criteria for the most important properties. Think of this as one of our recommendations for buying a pipe wrench.
When deciding which pipe wrench is best for you, you must, of course, do it yourself.
Key size
Depending on the purpose for which you need a pipe wrench, you should choose availability and choose between small, medium or large pipe wrenches. A good average is a pair of pliers that are 20 to 25mm long and have a wrench size of 40 to 50mm.
Pipe wrench material
Pipe wrenches are almost always made from forged steel. If it is simple tool steel, it must be protected from corrosion as it will rust. These pliers are often painted, usually red or chrome.
- It is easy enough to apply oil to protect them from rust.
- Good pipe wrenches are made from chrome-plated vanadium steel.
- This alloy is highly durable. An additional layer of phosphate is often added, which extends the shelf life of the mites.
Self-locking design
The classic pipe wrench always locks itself. The water pump pliers in our comparison are self-locking, but this is not always the case.
Self-locking means that when the pliers lock, the pliers hold. Moreover, the connector can be connected at the touch of a button.
Anti-trap protection
To avoid pinching fingers or hands, the DIN ISO 8976: "Grippers and pliers - water pump pliers" stipulates that the pliers must only close at a distance of 15 mm. That's why every pipe wrench has what's called crush protection, which prevents serious injuries between the handles.
Pipe wrench handles
Perfectly ergonomically shaped handles are rarely found on pipe wrenches. Since pipe wrenches are often used in hard-to-reach places, large handles pose a big challenge.
However, multi-component coatings are certainly easier to grip than a simple plastic coating.
History of origin
In general, references to wrenches have been found since the 15th century. Mass production and use began only in the 19th century, with the beginning of industrial production. In the same 19th century, a wrench with a variable size (adjustable jaws) was first invented. Then an adjustable mechanism arose, from the design of which, by adding a worm gear, the gas mechanism we are accustomed to today emerged.
The credit for inventing the pipe (gas) wrench is given today to the Swede Johan Petter Johansson (Johansson), who modified the adjustable wrench in 1892 . Mass production of gas keys under the Bahco brand is also organized in Sweden. These keys sold quite successfully. Therefore, this type of instrument is often called Swedish or “Swedish”. According to Russian GOST, this type of wrench is designated as a pipe lever wrench (KTR).
